How Witch Strandings is moving Hideo Kojima’s Strand game ideals into new, slightly cursed territory

1 year 10 months ago

Xalavier Nelson Jr has a bit of a love hate relationship with screens right now. As development on his studio’s gutsy market game Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator was wrapping up at the end of last year, he tells me he remembers “just being really angry at the concept of the borders of the screen”. He was, by his own admission, in “a vague fugue state” at the time, having spent months immersed in Space Warlord’s black and green trading interfaces. But the feeling of having his game “chained to these walls” at the edge of his monitor proved to be a surprisingly powerful one - so much so that it spurred Nelson Jr and his team at Strange Scaffold to create an entirely new kind of game in the months leading up to Warlord’s release: Witch Strandings.

That's right. Taking cues from Hideo Kojima’s hiking postal sim Death Stranding, Witch Strandings is a game that not only asks what Sam Bridges’ cross-country cargo routes might look like if they were made with a fraction of Kojima’s development budget, but also how games can create experiences that are “larger than my screen,” says Nelson Jr. And the answer, it turns out, lies in your PC’s humble mouse.

1 year 10 months ago

Here's How Sonic Frontiers Combat Gameplay Looks

People can now get a first look at Sonic Frontiers combat gameplay. The latest video features about six minutes of Sonic the Hedgehog facing different enemies in the open-world game. All of them look futuristic and robotic, with none of them resembling past foes from the series. [Thanks, IGN!]

Things kick off with Sonic facing an enemy that is a cluster of robotic, illuminated balls. It reshapes itself as Sonic kicks and punches it. As they fight, he eventually wears it down until only a core, which explodes, is left. At the 1:45 mark, Sonic encounters another foe that has a circular, armored shell it uses it protect the legs and body underneath. However, it can also send it out to attack. He needs to race around it in order to cause the armor to fly into the air so he can deal damage to it. Some smaller foes show up at the 3:30 point. At the 4:30 mark, we see gigantic foes Sonic will need to take down.

Here's the full Sonic Frontiers combat gameplay video. The actual first fight begins at the 35 second mark.

Star Wars Video Game Face-Off: The Winner Revealed

1 year 10 months ago

Last week, in honor of Star Wars Celebration and the premiere of Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi series, we asked you to help us decide which video game from that galaxy far, far away was the best of them all. Now, after thousands and thousands of 1v1 battles with matchups like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order vs. Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy and Star Wars Battlefront vs. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, the ultimate Star Wars game has been chosen.

So, which competitor claimed the top spot for the best Star Wars video game and is prophecized to bring balance to the Force? Drumroll please...

As if there was any doubt, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has once again claimed the top spot of a list of best Star Wars video games. We also crowned KOTOR #1 on our ranking of Star Wars games, and it has impressively held on to that honor despite being originally released in 2003. The love for KOTOR may only get stronger in the future as a remake is currently in the works at Aspyr.

KOTOR's story, which is set thousands of years before the films, remains the high point for a quintessential Jedi journey that is filled with memorable characters, surprising twists, fantastic RPG mechanics, and much more. The competition was tough, however, as its 91.5% win percentage was only about 3% more than the second-place finisher - 2019's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Sims 4: How to Take Away Money

1 year 10 months ago

The Sims 4 lets you do a lot of things you could never do in real life, including changing your wealth with the push of a button. While the game lets you give to your sims, you also have the power to take away. Here is everything you need to know about how to take away money in Sims 4.

How to Take Away Money in Sims 4

The first, and most obvious, answer regarding how to get rid of your money in Sims 4 is by spending it on items or activities that are expensive.

Hire massage therapists, buy expensive kitchenware, and even purchase new houses and the bill will start to pile up.

If you’d like an exact amount to start from, there is a way to be more specific about how to subtract money from your sims. As always, that answer is cheating.

Per usual, the first thing you’ll need to do is turn on cheats. To do so, hold Ctrl + Shift + C (PC) or all four shoulder buttons (PS4 & Xbox One). Pressing these buttons at the same time opens up a brand new window. In this window, type “testingcheats true”.

A prompt will pop up that says cheats are now enabled.

With cheats now on, all you have to do to change the exact amount of money you have is type however much money you want in the cheat box.

For example, if you wanted your sim to be flat broke, simply type in “Money 0” then hit enter. This will make it so that whatever amount you typed in is the exact amount your character has in their bank account.

How to Get Money in The Sims 4

Alternatively, if you want to go from being poor to rich in The Sims 4, you can also add money. To do this, bring up the same window as before by holding hold Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or all four shoulder buttons while using a controller.

Once up, you can type in any of the following prompts into the command window:

Resident Evil 4 Remake Trailer Breakdown

1 year 10 months ago

Resident Evil fans have had a lot to celebrate over the years. Biohazard and Village have brought the series back to its horror roots in unique ways. The Resident Evil 2 and 3 Remakes have been a perfect way to relive the glories of the past with contemporary improvements. But what comes next? Resident Evil 4 Remake is the answer, and we're pouring over every detail of the new trailer in today's spoiler-filled breakdown.

Alex Stadnik is your host for the video and welcomes Resident Evil 4 superfan Blake Hester to dissect every nook and cranny of Capcom's surprise announcement from the latest Sony State of Play. As stated above, we go into a lot of spoilers of the original game, so if you haven't played it yet, please bookmark this video and come back.

The boys kick things off by discussing their levels of surprise when the fourth entry in the iconic series makes its first appearance. They then break the trailer down scene by scene, letting you know what they think will be different and what will stay the same. They also ponder if the remake will feature a character similar to Mr. X, Nemesis, or Lady D instead of creating a straight one-to-one recreation. Finally, they wrap by discussing whether or not the game will get delayed and what their levels of hype are after seeing Leon's return.

You Can Check Out 6 Minutes Of Sonic Frontiers Combat Gameplay Right Now

1 year 10 months ago

Sonic Frontiers Combat Gameplay Release Date

Sega revealed a quick 30-second teaser of Sonic Frontiers gameplay earlier this week, and IGN released a full seven-minute look at the open-world gameplay of the Blue Blur’s latest. Now, you can watch more than six minutes of combat from the game, and it looks like Sonic combat…in a 3D open world.

As we previously saw, Sonic Frontiers’ world is beautiful and one of the most realistic-looking games in the franchise’s history. Today’s combat showcase takes place in the same area as the previous gameplay premiere but with decidedly less rail grinding and more spinball fighting action. As you might expect, Sonic fights in Sonic Frontiers like he always has – lots of jump attacks, spin moves, kicks, and more. However, it seems he does have a few new tricks up his sleeve. Namely, an in-air jolt attack that makes him dash all over the screen before doing an interesting rotating circle attack. Take a look for yourself below:

Summer Game Fest Announcements We Want To See

1 year 10 months ago

summer game fest 2022 silent hill

There's no E3, but with Summer Game Fest 2022 and a host of surrounding showcases, we’re still getting the announcements! Here’s what the Siliconera staff is hoping to see in next week’s festivities.

More than anything else, I would love to see any of those rumored Silent Hill projects get announced, or appear in some capacity. I can literally feel the monkey paw curl with that request, but I'd genuinely just be curious to see what kind of concept a new Silent Hill game might explore! — Kazuma

summer game fest sakura wars front mission

Release. Sakura. Wars. 1. Worldwide.
It feels like the 2019 Sakura Wars reboot is setting up a return of Sakura Shinguji and her crew. But so many people don't know who she is! The original game got a PS2 remake! The first two games were bundled together for a PSP release! Give a traditional, tactical, worldwide release of the very first Sakura Wars game, Sega! Please! — Jenni

Jenni beat me to the customary round of Sakura Wars begging, so I'm going to hope for more word from Square Enix about its plans for the previously-announced Front Mission remake. Besides that, not-E3 tends to be a place for news about the biggest globally-developed titles, so some news about HoYoVerse's progress on Honkai Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero would be welcome, too. — Josh

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Trailers Seem to Hint at New Gym Theme

1 year 10 months ago

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's second trailer revealed new Pokemon, locations, and people — but more notably hints at a potential gym theme. What if Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's gyms are themed after Formula One? There's a chance it could be MotoGP instead, but given the heavy vehicle theme we see between the new Legendary Pokemon and in other elements, one theme or the other seems likely.

Game Freak isn't shy about leaving hints about upcoming announcements in its trailers. The first trailer, for example, featured four Nintendo Switch on a single table that now serves as a nod to the four-player co-op. Below is our analysis of several screenshots from both the first trailer and the second that lead us to believe Pokemon Scarlet and Violet features one of Spain's popular motorsports. And, come on, the Legendary Pokemon literally have wheels protruding from their chests.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake Not Canceled, but Delayed Again

1 year 10 months ago

The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has not been canceled, but an issue with timing resulted in the game being delisted from retailers.

Earlier today, retailers like GameStop and others were delisting pre-orders for the upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, prompting concerns the project has been canceled. IGN can confirm that the Remake is still in development, but has been further delayed out of FY23.

In a statement to IGN Ubisoft says, "The development of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake will now be led by Ubisoft Montreal. We’re proud of the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, and Ubisoft Montreal will benefit from their learnings as the new team will continue the work to deliver a great remake."

Ubisoft added, "As a consequence, we are no longer targeting a FY23 release anymore and the game has been delisted. If players wish to cancel their preorder they are invited to contact their retailer. They will be updated on the project as the development is moving along."

This is not the first time the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has been delayed. After being announced in 2020 the remake was set to be released in 2021 before being delayed to Fiscal year 23. The project also moved development teams from Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal.

A New Multiplayer-Focused Action/Adventure Is On The Way From Disruptive Games And Amazon Games

1 year 10 months ago

Amazon Games has partnered with Disruptive Games, the studio behind Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 and Diablo II: Resurrected, to create a new intellectual property that will release on a variety of machines. Described by Amazon Games as an online multiplayer action-adventure with cooperative and competitive play, this new experience appears to be set in a post-apocalytpic or post-war world. This observation comes from two pieces of concept art that show crashed airplanes that appear to be heavily weathered.

The humans pictured in these artworks hold primitive weapons, such as a rifle with a bayonet. One of the characters appears to have mechanical legs. Several of these beings also wear headsets with tall antenna, likely for cooperative communication.

In a press release, Christoph Hartmann, the vice president of Amazon Games, says we can expect something different from this multiplayer experience. "The talented team at Disruptive Games is creating a fresh take on the multiplayer action-adventure genre, with strong game design and rich world-building that we're excited to help bring to players."

On Disruptive's official website, this new IP is amusingly codenamed "super secret project." We'll have to wait for more details, but the usage of concept art with game title implies it's a long way off.

Five Dinosaur Games On The Horizon

1 year 10 months ago

Jurassic World Evolution 2 delivers plenty of prehistoric thrills, and will soon get a massive update based on the forthcoming Jurassic World Dominion motion picture, but it isn't the only new dinosaur experience on the horizon or that you can play right now.

I scoured the internet for dinosaur titles that are in the works and found five that look promising. The last one on this list is something you can download right now. Here's what we can look forward to soon:

Jurassic Architect
Humanity is in trouble. After depleting most of Earth's resources and polluting its air, the only hope for survival lies in the past. The world's powers come together to send humanity back to the prehistoric age where they can again mine the planet for its minerals and fill the air with waste. This city building experience tasks you to build new settlements for humanity within the world of dinosaurs. Some of these thunder lizards can be used to help you in the mines. Others can be ridden to expedite travel. A good number of them, however, are hostile. On an incredibly dark note, those killers can even be turned into gladiators for your own coliseum. Jurassic Architect is currently in development for PC and looks incredibly ambitious, almost like a sci-fi and prehistoric Sim City. Sadly, no release date has been given.

Ubisoft's Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake is "no longer targeting a FY23 release"

1 year 10 months ago

Ubisoft has announced it is "no longer targeting a FY23 release" for its troubled Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake.

Following rumours that The Sands of Time remake - which has moved release date several times now - was being delisted at some major retailers, Ubisoft released a brief statement confirming the game has formally been "delisted" as the game's latest development studio, Ubisoft Montreal "continue[s] the work to deliver a great remake".

The Sands of Time remake was being developed by Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai, but the project has been dogged by setbacks since its unveiling in September 2020. Shortly after its announcement, Ubisoft moved its launch date from January 2021 to March that same year, but February brought a second delay, this time indefinitely, while the team worked on delivering "a remake that feels fresh while remaining faithful to the original".
