Ripout is a co-op horror FPS that's a bit like a roguelike Doom 3

1 year 11 months ago

Over the past few weeks I've sampled so many retro-styled FPSes, I'd class it as a form of training. I'm now attuned to their look, their pacing, their good and bad points. So, it came as no surprise when I found myself testing out the closed alpha of yet another of their ilk: Ripout, an upcoming sci-fi horror FPS that's very Doom 3.

What's nice is that vidbud Liam joined me! Both because he's a fan of the FPS genre and to be present with a jar in hand, lest I crumbled into dust. Thankfully this didn't happen and we had a pretty swell time, I'd say. It's early days for the game but there's potential there.

First, here's the FFVII Remake concept art showing characters like Aerith, Barret, Cloud, and Tifa in their frog forms. In this version, each one has identifying features showing who they are. Geoff Keighley say Summer Game Fest "primarily focused" on already announced games

1 year 11 months ago

We're on the cusp of 2022's not-E3 week, with the main event set to be this Thursday's Summer Game Fest livestream. Ahead of its airing, however, host Geoff Keighley has warned viewers expecting major reveals to "manage your expectations", saying the event will be "primarily focused" on already announced games.

Speaking during a Twitter Spaces audio session over the weekend (as transcribed by VGC), Keighley said he was "very excited" about the titles set to feature during Thursday's Summer Game Fest, but warned viewers to "definitely manage your expectations in terms of the megaton shocks that you’re expecting. This is not The Game Awards."

"We’ve got lots of good stuff to show you," he added, "but buyer beware of some of the crazy rumours I'm seeing out there in terms of things people expect to get announced."

Naughty Dog almost gave Nate a stamina bar in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

1 year 11 months ago

The climbing mechanic in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End almost saw lithe hero Nathan Drake come with his own little stamina bar in a bid to give an extra layer of difficulty to the game.

Naughty Dog's Josh Scherr, who co-wrote A Thief's End with Neil Druckmann and then went on to co-write The Lost Legacy, was a guest on YouTube channel Couch Soup over the weekend. Here, Scherr shared more about his illustrious career with Naughty Dog (which has spanned over 20 years) and gave some behind the scenes insight into Uncharted 4's development.

Scherr praised the power of PlayStation 4, and said it was "specifically designed to not be super complicated with a cell processor and six SPUs and all that other crazy stuff", likening it to a "fancy version of a high-end PC". This means more time for developers to focus on other areas of a game sooner, such as its story development.

Diablo: Immortal Players Are Upset Over the Game's Microtransactions

1 year 11 months ago

Diablo: Immortal players are upset over the prevalence of microtransactions in Blizzard's latest action-RPG.

The free-to-play game launched on June 2 and brings a relatively complete Diablo experience to mobile (and now PC in Early Access), albeit with a few simplified systems. As is common in free-to-play games, however, there are many optional in-game purchases, and Diablo: Immortal's best loot is seemingly pretty hard to get without spending a lot of money – and even then it isn't guaranteed.

Players have taken to Reddit and Twitter to raise their concerns, and Legendary Gems are at the centre of the microtransaction controversy. These are essentially powerful upgrades, ranked from one to five stars, that players unlock by completing Elder Rift dungeons with added Legendary Crest modifiers. The best rated Legendary Gems can only be found by cracking open Legendary Crests.

The problem is, only three Legendary Crests are available each month unless players spend money, and they essentially act like randomised loot boxes. According to Forbes, players only have a 0.05% chance of getting a five star Gem for each Legendary Crest used.

Who Is Geno in Fortnite? Everything We Know so Far

1 year 11 months ago

If you took part in last week’s Collision event that ended Fortnite’s Chapter 3 Season 2, you no doubt got a good look at the mysterious Geno that The Foundation had been after this whole time. However, seeing as the Fortnite story is a little messy, we’re here to help straighten it out by explaining who Geno is and what we know about them so far.

Who Is Geno in Fortnite?

Geno is the leader of the Imagined Order, the antagonistic force in the Fortnite Battle Royale story. Seeing as Geno is the leader, it would be safe to call him the main villain of the game. Geno is mostly an unknown, only shown as a shadowy figure thus far.

While the last couple of seasons of Fortnite has had players doing battle with high-ranking members of the Imagined Order, such as Doctor Slone, they haven’t faced off against the leader.

Netflix’s Resident Evil Trailer Still Proves Umbrella Can’t Be Trusted

1 year 11 months ago

An official trailer for the Resident Evil series on Netflix has dropped, showing off a futuristic dystopia. It is unknown exactly how much of Umbrella’s history the show considers canon, because the trailer mentions Umbrella has been “besieged by scandal.” While Umbrella has always been masterful in the art of spinning things, it seems we won’t know the whole truth until the series is available to binge on July 14.

You can see the trailer here and below:

It seems this new zombie apocalypse kicks off because Umbrella accidentally laces some sort of medicine with the T-Virus. Not really sure how that is something you accidentally do, but they have always seemed like a purposefully inept company in the games, so it still fits.

The only truly Resident Evil monster than the trailer shows off is a Licker, so it seems possible that there might be other classic Resident Evil big bads spread across the season.

One Piece Netflix Live-Action Show Gets First Look With Concept Art & Ultra-Detailed Sets

1 year 11 months ago

Today, during the first day of its Geeked Week show, Netflix provided the first look at the work being done for the One Piece live-action show.

Presented by Luffy actor Iñaki Godoy and showrunners Steven Maeda and Matt Owens, the video showcases the concept art created for some of the sets that will appear in the series.

Even more interesting, we get to see how some of these sets are being brought to life at the filming location in South Africa.

They definitely look super-detailed, and you can take a look below.

If you’re unfamiliar with One Piece, the original manga by Eiichiro Oda debuted all the way back in 1997 on Shueiusha’s popular magazine Weekly Shounen Jump and it’s still ongoing, having recently passed its 100th volume.

It has sparked one of the most long-lived anime series of all time, which has recently passed the 1,000th episode.

Of course, there have also been plenty of movies, and video games, speaking of which, a brand-new JRPG titled “One Piece Odyssey” for  PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC will be released this year.

Square Enix “Extremely Pleased” With the Performance of Final Fantasy XIV; Expects Success to Continue

1 year 11 months ago

Today  Square Enix posted a transcript of the latest financial results meeting hosted in Tokyo, and it included CEO Yosuke Matsuda’s comments on the performance of Final Fantasy XIV.

Matsuda-san mentions that the company is “extremely pleased” with the performance of Final Fantasy XIV during the past fiscal year, and expects a “considerable” contribution to earnings during the current fiscal year that will end in March 2023 as well.

This is certainly not too surprising considering that Final Fantasy XIV has become the most profitable game in the Final Fantasy franchise, albeit it’d be interesting to know how much the extra sales of “optional items” on the official online store contribute to said profitability.

The popular MMORPG belonging to the Final Fantasy franchise has been described as consistently increasing in paying subscribers during every financial report since well before the release of the latest expansion Endwalker.

Wednesday Addams Brings Her Twisted Pigtails to Netflix in a New Series

1 year 11 months ago

Today, Netflix revealed that a brand new series about the Addams Family is coming to its platform. Instead of a reboot focusing on the entire family, though, it seems the upcoming television show will be all about Wednesday Addams, the daughter with pigtails that are as twisted as her schemes.

The upcoming Tim Burton spinoff is set to be eight episodes long. You can check out the official reveal trailer, cast list, and brief description for Netflix’s Wednesday Addams right down below.

From the imagination of Tim Burton comes WEDNESDAY — a twisted new series coming soon to Netflix. WEDNESDAY — starring Jenna Ortega in the title role, alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzman, Gwendoline Christie, Christina Ricci and more — is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Snap snap.

In the trailer, we also see The Thing, the well-known hand that belongs to the family. If you have subtitles on, the hand’s message reads as followed in sign language: “Heed my warning. A grave terror approaches. Her name is… Wednesday.”

Mohammed Avdol JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R Trailer Debuts Stardust Crusaders

There's a new JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R video out, and this one features Stardust Crusaders character Mohammed Avdol. He's one of Jotaro's allies in that part of the story. His trailer shows him fighting alongside his Stand Magician's Red.

As the name suggests, Magician's Red is a fire-based Stand. It has a shorter range than other characters' ones in the story. So both Mohammed and Magician's Red fight with kicks and punches. However, the Crossfire Hurricane attack is executed from a distance, as are a few other special attacks.

New Fire Emblem Heroes Feh Channel Introduces Changes, Ascended Florina

A new Fire Emblem Heroes Feh Channel appeared on June 5, 2022, and it included a Book 6 video, a series of Three Houses events tied to Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, and Ascended Florina. Essentially, it covered all changes and updates in the immediate future.

Things kicked off with a video showing Fire Emblem Heroes Book 6 events. Alfonse and Ash are under attack by the goddess Embla. It is then that the god Askr appears to assist them. We then see Alfonse and Veronica fighting one another.

For those who just want to see the new Book 6 Fire Emblem Heroes movie outside of the Feh Channel, here’s the separate trailer for that.

As for Fire Emblem HeroesThree Houses-themed events ahead of Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, that will involve banners and a chance to get a free hero. Between June 8-23, 2022, 13 banners with characters from the game will appear. Each one will give people one free pull. You also can pick one of the focus heroes if you draw from one 40 times. However, each banner will only be around four days total.

Kemono Friends 3 free-to-play game appears on PS4 and PS5

The PS4 and PS5 versions of Kemono Friends 3 have appeared in Japan. Sega and Appirits launched the title as a free-to-play game on the Japanese PlayStation Store. This game is an RPG where players can collect anthropomorphized characters modeled after various animals.

Sega initially revealed Kemono Friends 3 as a mobile game in 2019. The game launched on Android and iOS devices in the same year. In 2020, the company released the title on DMM Games, which also makes it playable on PCs.

Appirits noted that the PS4 and PS5 releases of Kemono Friends 3 are completely different from the mobile and PC versions. There is no save transfer feature from the mobile version, so all players on the PlayStation release will start fresh. In-game events and campaigns will also run separately between the PlayStation and mobile versions.

Giant News

1 year 11 months ago

Starting today, we want to enter a new era of transparency with you, the GB audience. So here’s what you need to know: Giant Bomb and Jeff Gerstmann have agreed to go our separate ways.

We’re not just going to gloss over this kind of heavy-hitting news–it is a big moment. Jeff is a co-founder of Giant Bomb and has been at the heart of the site since it launched in 2008. Whether it's Quick Looks, live streams, or the Bombcast, you have consumed content that he had a hand in making. Jeff has shaped Giant Bomb in profound ways and he's also been a key part of bringing on board the voices that have defined the site through its different eras. To this day, Giant Bomb’s influence on the way video games are covered on the internet is still as pervasive as ever, and Jeff remains inseparably attached to that legacy.

But things change: life unfolds; priorities shift, and people come and go. And the same goes for Giant Bomb.

Many people have called Giant Bomb home, but they've also ventured out in search of new opportunities and, each time, it has been difficult to see, for us as their colleagues and you as a community that follows them. But what has always helped us–and hopefully you–is understanding that Giant Bomb has never been about one person. Giant Bomb has always been greater than the sum of its parts.

What started as a group of people in a basement evolved into a couple of websites in another basement. That became two offices on each coast, and eventually–out of both necessity and opportunity–a group of friends scattered across the States. Fundamentally though, through each of these changes Giant Bomb has remained what it has always been: a bunch of passionate friends talking about and around video games.

Madden NFL 23 Closed Beta Impressions: Livin’ in a Passer’s Paradise

1 year 11 months ago

EA Sports has the unenviable task of reintroducing Madden to gamers every year. The broad strokes never change — Madden 23 is a football game that prioritizes simulation and it immediately brings to mind Madden 22, Madden 21, and really, every game in the franchise since the Super Nintendo era. But after a couple matches in the closed beta over the weekend, it's clear that EA is slowly but surely ironing out some of the rough patches that have dogged the series since the 90s. Madden 23 isn't likely to convert any nonbelievers, but it should give longtime fans a bevy of new ideas to chew on.

The closed beta only offered the standard quick play mode, which means I didn't get the chance to dive into what the studio has cooked up for Ultimate Team, Franchise, Superstar KO, and so on. But I did get to take a look at some of the legitimately inventive ways EA is shaking up Madden's core fundamentals. The thing you'll notice first? Passing has become incredibly more intuitive. Madden quarterbacks were previously saddled with a fairly limited set of arm motions; we could dart a throw with white-hot speed, or lob the ball in the sky on deep routes. Now, all of those mechanics are on something of a gradient. The pace on your throws are determined by the exact amount of time you hold down the button, and you're given much more agency over where you locate the ball for your receivers. You know how Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams seemed to improvise routes on the fly? It's kind of like that.

Capcom Confirms Street Fighter 6’s Timeline Placement And Touches On Ryu's New Look

1 year 11 months ago

Street Fighter 6 made a big splash during its PlayStation State of Play showing last week, revealing two more fighters, some sort of exploration story mode, and more. While we await more details on some of those features, Capcom has divulged some info on Ryu's new look and the game's place in the Street Fighter timeline.

The game's official Twitter account shared a statement by director Takayuki Nakayama that confirms Street Fighter 6 takes place after the events of Street Fighter III. This places the game at the end of the series' timeline given that Street Fighter V is set before SF 3.

As for Ryu's new look, Nakayama explains his Buddhist robe, also called a kasaya, showcases Ryu's newfound dignity despite the warrior feeling he's "not there yet." What that means is up to interpretation, but the attire does pair well with Ryu's dashing beard if nothing else.
