Former Sega Senior Managing Director Hidekazu Yukawa Has Died

1 year 11 months ago

Hidekazu Yukawa Died

Hidekazu Yukawa, aka "Mr. Sega," the former senior managing director of Sega, has died. The executive was known for frequently appearing in Japanese commercials for the Dreamcast, and even made an appearance in the Shenmue series. Those close to him revealed that Yukawa had passed away in June 2021 due to aspiration pneumonia. He was 78 years old. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

Born in 1943, Yukawa was originally an employee at CSK Corporation, a Tokyo-based computer service firm. The company later bought Sega Enterprises in 1984, and Yukawa became the senior managing director in 1998. Shortly after, with the release of the Sega Dreamcast in November 1998, Yukawa appeared in a series of self-deprecating commercials advertising the console. The commercials centered around Yukawa overhearing school children calling Sega consoles "lame" and praising the PlayStation instead.

The commercials became an instant hit in Japan, and the Dreamcast sold out on release day. Yukawa became a popular figure within Japanese pop culture and gained the nicknames "Mr. Sega" and "Director Yukawa" in Japan. Additionally, he appeared in various Sega titles. These include the original Shenmue, in which he appeared as and voiced himself, as well as Japan-only DLC for Sonic Adventures.

War of the Visions Sees the Return of Porcelain Tower this Week, Along with Anima Vision Card

1 year 11 months ago

After a whole slew of non-stop collaborations, War of the Visions is finally having a few quiet weeks until the collabs start up again at the end of June with Final Fantasy X. This week, we’ll be getting another PvE event in the form of the Porcelain Tower.

It functions similarly to tower modes in other gacha games, where you’re simply tasked with embarking with a party that meets the embark conditions and trying to clear as many floors as possible for rewards. This week’s Porcelain Tower update goes all the way up to floor 70, where players can earn the Thunder Ring accessory.

In addition to that, we’ll also see the release of a new Wind MR unit Cyrelle. She can’t be pulled from the gacha system, but players can play through the new Cyrelle Acquisition Quests to obtain her. We didn’t get a ton of details about her kit, but we did get a glimpse at one of her moves:

  • Twisting Shieldbreaker: Destroys any barrier that reduces Phys Dmg on target, then deals Dmg (L) to targets within range.

We’re also seeing the release of a new UR Vision Card this week, called Darkness Enchanted, Anima. Here’s a rundown of the party buffs:

  • Party Ability: Slash Attack Res Piercing Rate Up/Dark Attack Up/Unit Attack Res Up
  • Limited Bestowed Effects: Dark Attack Up/Slash Attack Up/Max HP Up

This Vision Card also comes with Anima as an Esper that you can bring into battle, and it’s definitely a good card to look out for if you play a lot of Dark units.

War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is now available on mobile devices.

Fans call for Sega to #DelaySonicFrontiers after "soulless" gameplay unveiled

But so far fans are unhappy with the direction of the game and - just as with Sonic's redesign for the film series - are calling for a delay.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 Ti review: Olympian power and performance

1 year 11 months ago

Nearly two years ago, we called the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 a Titan in all but name, a prosumer graphics card that makes sense as a cheaper alternative to professional Quadros while also delivering better gaming performance than any consumer alternative. Now the RTX 3090 Ti has arrived, placing it above the Titans and firmly into the realm of the Olympians - in terms of performance, power consumption and price tag.

The RTX 3090 Ti retails for £1879 in the UK and $1999 in the US, making it a hefty £480/$500 more expensive than its predecessor - that's a 33 percent markup on what is already an expensive part. In exchange, you get a fully-unlocked GA102 die with 2.4 percent more CUDA cores, a 9.4 percent higher boost clock, a 7.7 percent higher memory clock and a 29 percent higher rated power draw. That suggests we'll see a faster card than the vanilla 3090, but getting anywhere close to 33 percent extra performance to make the premium worthwhile seems unlikely at this stage.

EA issues statement of LGBTQ+ support ahead of Pride

EA has issued a statement of support, primarily for LGBTQ+ rights, ahead of this month's Pride celebrations.

The message, from chief people officer Mala Singh, follows internal criticism of EA by some employees for not speaking out sooner in support - as other game developers have.

"I want to acknowledge the pain and fear that our LGBTQ+, specifically our Transgender community, is experiencing in light of emerging legislation in the US and the ongoing attacks on their human rights," Singh wrote in post shared on EA's blog. "We will continue to strive for a safe and supportive workplace, and as a leadership team, we want to be clear about what we stand for:

Nintendo 64 classics including Zelda: Ocarina of Time given ray-tracing upgrade thanks to emulator

1 year 11 months ago

The Nintendo 64 had some of the greatest games of our time on it. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, for example, was the first game ever to receive a perfect score of 40/40 in Famitsu magazine and was recently added to the Video Game Hall of Fame.

However, while great, these games are a product of their time, and as such can look a little rough around the edges. Well, not anymore!

Now, thanks to an emulator developer that goes by the name of Darío, these legendary games have been given not only ray-tracing upgrades, but also object motion blur, widescreen, DLSS and 60+ FPS.

Pre-Orders Open for Guilty Gear Strive May Figure

1 year 11 months ago

Guilty Gear Strive May figure

Pre-orders for a 1/7 scale figure of May from Guilty Gear Strive are now open, courtesy of figure manufacturer Broccoli. The figure is intricately detailed, down to May's backpack, pirate hat, and signature anchor weapon. It will cost ¥24,200 (about $185) and will release sometime in December 2022. [Thanks, Gamer!]

May first appeared in Guilty Gear and is the first mate of the Jellyfish Pirates. She is a recurring character in the Guilty Gear series and typically appears wearing an orange pirate hat with a skull and crossbones. Despite her childlike appearance, her weapon of choice is a large anchor. In Strive, she appears wearing an orange hoodie and a Chimaki-themed backpack.

The figure recreates her appearance from Strive. Furthermore, the figure features significant attention to detail. May's backpack, for example, has belt straps with buckles as well as zippers on the Chimaki's mouth. You can also see other details such as insignias, patches, and wrappings that would normally be difficult to see in-game. Moreover, pre-orders from the Broccoli online store will also come with an acrylic stand of Mr. Dolphin.

Adventure Academia Shares a Setting With Class of Heroes

1 year 11 months ago

Adventure Academia

Acquire has a new game in development, and it's rooted in the long-dormant Class of Heroes series. Formally titled Adventure Academia: The Fractured Continent, the game was announced on June 5, 2022.

Check out Acquire's English-language announcement trailer below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt8Q75M45ac

The original Class of Heroes was released in 2008 as Ken to Mahou to Gakuen Mono on the PSP by Acquire in Japan. It was a dungeon RPG that allowed players to create and customize students to form parties and explore the dungeon. Class of Heroes 2 was released in 2009, but remained Japan-exclusive until a crowdfunding campaign run by MonkeyPaw Games and Gaijin helped secure a digital release on PSN in 2013. Sequels were also published on PS3 and 3DS, but remained Japan-exclusive.

Unlike the original titles, Adventure Academia is a strategy RPG. It takes place in Pedra, a land that is home to four schools and their host nations. Players will recruit students from ten playable character races. Each student will have a set of traits that affect their performance in battle, such as being "Chuuni" or "Mentally Weak." Players will guide their students across the land to restore peace to the four nations.

New DLC for Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed is in the Works

1 year 11 months ago

Akiba's Trip Undead Undressed

Kati will have justice. Acquire is working on DLC for Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed (a.k.a. Akiba's Trip 2). The new addition comes nearly nine years after the game was originally released in 2013 and 2014 on PS3 and PS Vita. The DLC, which was announced on June 5, 2022, will add a new story route for one of the playable characters.

Check out the announcement teaser below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZ_HhpFcbJE

Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed is an open-world action game structured similarly to Acquire's Way of the Samurai series. Players roam an accurately rendered version of Tokyo's Akihabara neighborhood, hunting down "Synthisters," vampire-like superhuman creatures. The Synthisters walk among the regular humans, preying upon the lifeforce of tourists, cosplayers, and the unsuspecting masses crowding the famous district. The player is turned into one of them and teams up with an impromptu gang known as the Akiba Freedom Fighters to investigate the incidents and bring peace to Japan's nerd haven. The game was notable for its location-accurate use of stores and establishments from real-life Akihabara, as well as its "Strip Action" combat. Players fight Synthisters, but need to defeat them by tearing off their clothing and exposing their bodies to sunlight.

Best PS4 Couch Co-Op Games & Local Multiplayer Games (2022)

1 year 11 months ago

As good as online connectivity is, it’s frustrating that it has largely come at the cost of sacrificing split screen co-operative play in many games. If you ask us, nothing beats good ol’ couch co-op! That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the best PS4 couch co-op games to play with friends so you won’t run out of fun times to spend with your pals anytime soon.

Rocket League

Best PS4 Couch Co-op Games

Nobody could possibly have predicted that Rocket League – a game in which you play soccer with rocket powered cars – would become such a phenomenon, but here we are.

On paper, it all sounds rather silly, but in practice, it’s utterly brilliant. In cooperative mode especially, Rocket League is a total hoot, providing an experience that succeeds because it is both easy to pick up and difficult to master. Even when the giggles are replaced by competitiveness though, Rocket League still measures up as an accomplished sports game and a great co-operative title.

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition

It might be a remaster of a fairly old game, but it still holds up pretty well on the PS4. Best of all, though, Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition also features local co-op. It’s not the main focus of the game, but two players can still take control of two separate characters during combat encounters to shake things up a little.

Every Fish & Where to Find Them in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 3

1 year 11 months ago

Wondering what all the Fortnite fish locations are in Chapter 3 Season 3? This guide will run you through where to find all 23 fishes, so you can add them to your in-game collection as fast as possible.

How to Catch Fish

Fish can be caught by tracking down fishing holes. These are circles in the water of bubbles or ripples and have fish floating around them beneath the surface.

You can catch fish at a fishing hole by using a Harpoon, Fishing Rod, or Pro Fishing Rod. You can also throw a grenade at a fishing spot, but this will only get you ammo and rusty cans, no fish.

Some fish, noted below, can only be caught by using the Pro Fishing Rod, so keep this in mind.

Where to Find Every Fish in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 3

There are now 23 fish that can be caught in Chapter 3 Season 3. We’ve listed each of them in alphabetical order, as well as where you can find them in the table below.

DF Direct Weekly on the PS5 State of Play event and the Sonic Frontiers gameplay reveal

1 year 11 months ago

The latest DF Direct Weekly has arrived, in which myself, John Linneman and Alex Battaglia spend a disproportionate amount of time discussing Sony's latest State of Play stream. While it may have been short on 'gigaton' news and reveals, the showing was strong overall, concentrating on 2022 and 2023 titles, going large on PlayStation VR2 and - in a welcome turn - taking transparency to a new level. It was made clear that everything we saw was running in real-time on console hardware and if it wasn't, captions popped up to explain what it was we were actually seeing.

This latter point may not sound like a big deal, but it's been a bugbear of ours for years. When so many gaming events have relied on pre-rendered CG trailers, questions have to be asked about how representative the content is of the end product. Can you imagine any other form of entertainment teasing the audience with trailers that bear little or no relation to the actual end product, often looking a lot better? Sony has been pretty good with this on prior State of Plays and it's the way forward - as is showing us real meat as opposed to 'pre-announcement' announcements.

Disney Speedstorm: The First Preview

1 year 11 months ago

There’s a better-than-average chance you’ve played a Disney-themed kart racer over the years, whether its Mickey's Speedway USA from GoldenEye 007 and Diddy Kong Racing maestros Rare, or Toy Story Racer from LEGO specialists Traveller’s Tales. There’s even the largely-forgotten Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour – a whimsical little racer from Crystal Dynamics helmed by the creator of… horror classic Dead Space. At any rate, Disney is going back to the enchanted well in 2022, courtesy of the crew behind Gameloft’s long-running Asphalt series. Does it have the bare necessities, or is Gameloft taking the mickey? IGN was given an early glimpse at the game in action ahead of this week’s closed beta.

Pitched as a hero-based combat racer, Disney Speedstorm appears to be a typically intuitive and accessible arcade racing game. While IGN is yet is have hands-on time with the game itself, the team has described the handling as easy to grasp, tricky to master, and certainly informed by the experience gleaned from the Asphalt series – particularly Asphalt 8: Airborne, Asphalt 9: Legends, and Asphalt Xtreme.

Of course, approachable driving dynamics are the minimum entry requirement when it comes to competing in the karting space against incumbents like the impeccable Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and the successful Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled (and even non-karting racers like Hot Wheels Unleashed, one of the best arcade racers of the last decade). Disney Speedstorm’s trump card here is the admittedly unparalleled treasure chest of characters, worlds, and even music it gets to draw inspiration from.

Square Enix Boss Teases Multiple High-Quality Games Including New Just Cause; Clarifies Statements About NFT

1 year 11 months ago

Today Square Enix posted a transcript of the latest financial results meeting hosted in Tokyo, and it included interesting information from CEO Yosuke Matsuda.

First of all, we learn that the primary purpose of the sale of most of the company’s western assets was a reorientation of the company’s portfolio, including a step-up of online games for the North American and European markets. On top of that, Square Enix retains ownership of the Just Cause IP and a new game is in development.

“Our materials provide an overview and details of the Transaction, but I note that its primary purpose was a reorientation of our portfolio. We especially revisited our studio and title portfolios from the perspective of stepping up our offering of online titles that we develop for the North American and the European market. We want to focus on creating new titles that align with our strategy, including ones that leverage new IP. The JUST CAUSE franchise will remain our IP, and we are at work developing a new title in the franchise.”

1 year 11 months ago

The Xbox Series X has been out for a little while now, and it’s proving that Microsoft plans to dedicate a lot more resources to bringing JRPG games to their consoles in the near future. Here are our selections for the best Xbox Series X JRPGs you can play in 2022.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Best Xbox Series X JRPGs (2022)

yakuza

While the Yakuza series may have felt more like an action title than an RPG in previous games, it’s always had the core foundations of a JRPG due to its leveling and skill-based mechanics. That is why Yakuza: Like a Dragon had such a seamless transition when switching over genres.

The newest installment in the series changes the combat from beating up your opponents in real-time to a turn-based style JRPG fans will definitely feel more at home with.

Thanks to Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s impressive Xbox Series X enhanced version, players not only get to experience the game in 60 FPS, but they also get to witness Ichiban’s crazy hair in all its glory in 4K.

The Best Skyrim Xbox One Mods You Can Get (2022)

1 year 11 months ago

As of the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition on the Xbox One means that you’ll get to enjoy mods with your RPG experience on consoles. Here are the 50 best Skyrim Xbox One mods you can get right now.

Bee Hives

Best Skyrim Xbox One Mods

Now this may sound like a silly mod to include on a list of best mods to get, but if you’ve played Skyrim before, then you know Honey can be difficult to come by and stealing from Golden Glow Estate isn’t always a smart move. Placing these bee hives in front of Honningbrew Meadery is a stroke of genius.

The Paarthurnax Dilemma

If you’re anything like us, you may have grown fond of the dragon sitting atop the Throat of the World. Once you complete the main story though, you’re forced to kill him if you want to do every quest.

Fortunately, this mod allows you to complete the same quest in a way that keeps your flying buddy alive.

Aethernautics: A Space Travel Mod

Best Skyrim Xbox One Mods

You know what Skyrim doesn’t have enough of? Spaceships.

Details For The Pokémon Go Crossover Event With The Pokémon Trading Card Game

1 year 11 months ago

Last weekend's Pokémon Go Fest delivered two days of catching fun, along with the debuts of Nihilego and Shaymin within the mobile game. Now, Pokémon Go and the Pokémon Trading Card Game are crossing over with events that will touch both games. For Pokémon Go, the event begins on June 16 and brings the chance to catch Wimpod and a new version of Pikachu wearing a TCG hat.

For the Pokémon Trading Card Game, the next expansion is themed around Pokémon Go, and will feature cards based on Team Mystic, Instinct, and Valor. We'll have to wait to see just how many of the cards are true crossovers, but no matter what, it's great seeing these two popular games work together.

For the mobile trainers out there, Wimpod is one of those Pokémon that requires 400 candies to evolve. When this number is hit, Wimpod evolves into Golisopod. The creature that looks a bit like a dead fish transforms into one of the coolest Godzilla-like beasts in all of Pokémon.

This event also sees Mewtwo returning to five-star raids. All Mewtwo caught from June 16 to June 23 will have the Shadow Ball charged attack. Those caught from June 23 to July 1 will have the Psystrike charged attack.
