Father Of Newborn Child Uses Free Time To Get Trophies Added To Bugsnax DLC, Still Doesn’t Have Peace Walker Platinum

2 years 5 months ago

It’s a story as old as time.

Someone claims to love PlayStation trophies – even though they don’t have the platinum for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker – finds out a game they want to play doesn’t have trophies, and they go online and pester those hardworking indie developers until trophies get added. In this case, that person is Greg Miller, whom some (very few, probably) know from IGN and Kinda Funny. Most people would know him as the photographer of washed-up hero, Shirtless Spider-Man

Video Games Stuck In Development Hell: Part 1

2 years 5 months ago

Video games are incredibly hard to make. Be it the cost to create them, the staff needed to actually develop a game, or something else behind the scenes, a lot can happen to take it off course. While it’s sad for players, developers know best what their game needs, and time is almost always something developers could use more of. Sometimes, though, time can’t fix everything, and in those cases, games can find themselves stuck in what’s known informally as “development hell.”

This is a term used to describe games seemingly stuck in development forever. No matter what those development teams do, more and more barriers get in the way, and all of a sudden, a game misses its release date by a couple of months, then a year, then multiple years, and in some unfortunate cases, we just don’t ever hear about the game ever again. Here are five games stuck in development hell.

Part 1 of 3 in Game Informer's series detailing games that might be stuck in development hell.

Final Fantasy 14's Infamously Long Story Proves No Match For Hironobu Sakaguchi

2 years 5 months ago

An MMO like Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn can take 100+ hours to complete, and that's not even considering its growing list of huge expansions, which add anywhere from another 50 to 100 hours. This is seemingly no problem for Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, who has reportedly played through the entirety of Final Fantasy 14 in a month, setting himself up for the Endwalker expansion that releases on November 23.

As reported by PCGamesN, Sakaguchi started playing Final Fantasy 14 in late September, sharing his progress and screenshots on Twitter. Sakaguchi only needed 16 days to complete the base game and just two days for Heavensward (an estimated 73 to 150 hours on HowLongToBeat). He then completed Stormblood, Shadowbringers, and smaller patch content by October 29. He even managed to squeeze in some time to attend his daughter's wedding, the madman.

A conservative estimate, just counting the base game plus three expansions, puts Sakaguchi at 300+ hours of playtime according to HowLongToBeat. That's assuming he touched absolutely none of the side content in the expansions or smaller patch content updates, which could put him up to a maximum of 1567, which is literally impossible to pull off in a month and change.

Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies Won't Include Main Quest At Launch

2 years 5 months ago

While Call of Duty: Vanguard will include a Zombies mode on release day, players can't try out the main quest until sometime after season one's launch. Treyarch announced that the main quest won't be part of Vanguard's November 5 release or the start of season one on December 2. Instead, new Zombies content will start rolling out as part of the game's first season, with the main quest coming at a later time.

"Starting on December 2nd, new Zombies content & features will begin to roll out in Vanguard," Treyarch said. "Players will also encounter some other surprise elements later in Season One that will set the stage for our upcoming Main Quest.

The main quest will apparently be tied to "the arrival of an unexpected ally after Season One". We don't know exactly when that means the main quest will drop. We just got a look at the Call of Duty: Vanguard roadmap, which spells out the game plan from launch through the start of season one.

While Sledgehammer is developing the bulk of Vanguard, Treyarch is handling the Zombies mode. Recently, Treyarch has been very busy with Call of Duty, leading development on 2018's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and 2020's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War..

AGDQ 2022’s Games List Includes Deltarune, Deathloop, FFVII Intergrade; Starts Jan. 9

2 years 5 months ago

Twice a year, we’re fortunate enough to get treated to a Games Done Quick event, where speedrunners get together to, well, speedrun games for charity. Awesome Games Done Quick, dubbed AGDQ 2022 for next year, will be making a return in January 2022, and the full games list has just been unveiled.

There are tons of exciting speedruns to look forward to in January, and the list contains some recent games as well such as the critically acclaimed Deathloop, which should be fun to watch. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade has also made the list, which stars Yuffie and newcomer Sonon as they make their way to Midgar.

The list also includes some other speedrunning favorites like Mario and Dark Souls. Just like the past three events before this one, AGDQ 2022 will also be completely digital, meaning that all speedrunners will be playing from home and there will be no in-person audience.

AGDQ 2022 is set to run from Jan. 9 to Jan. 16 2022.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Will Ramp Down on Major Updates & Expansion After Nov. 5

2 years 5 months ago

Just a couple weeks back, we had a big Nintendo Direct focused solely on Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It seemed to be the rejuvenation process that this game needed; it’s bringing back Brewster and the Gyroids, along with new cooking systems that help add more longevity to the game. Beyond that, we’re also getting the Happy Home Paradise paid DLC, which lets players travel to different archipelagos and decorate homes.

This is a lot of new content to be excited about, but Nintendo has also since confirmed in a statement to IGN that there will be no other major updates for the game after that.

“Nintendo shared the news with IGN in a presentation for today’s Animal Crossing Direct, where it revealed that the version 2.0 update and Happy Home Paradise DLC will both be available on November 5, 2021. Following that date, Nintendo says it will only be supporting the game with small changes.”

This pretty much means that we’ll only see the seasonal events such as Bunny Day and Halloween, with no other big updates to shake things up in the future. It’s definitely sad news, especially since Animal Crossing has had a major impact on its huge player base, the majority of which having probably picked up the game during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even so, there’s plenty of content here to hopefully keep players busy for a long time.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is now available on the Nintendo Switch.

Tencent’s Honor of Kings: World Sets Its Sight on World Domination

2 years 5 months ago

Tencent has definitely made a huge impact on the gaming industry, whether it be behind the scenes, or more overtly with its stable of studios and companies. One of the most popular mobile games around, Honor of Kings, is one of them, boasting an average of 100 million daily active users in China. With such a strong foundation, Tencent is moving forward to conquer the world with the reveal of Honor of Kings: World.

An open-world action-RPG, the company has described the game as “teeming with compelling encounters, fantastic creatures, and breathtaking landscapes.” Looking at the brand new trailer that has dropped, Honor of Kings: World is in line with the likes of Monster Hunter: World, where players do battle with hulking creatures against beautiful backdrops and using powerful weaponry.

Development is being led by Tencent’s TiMi studio in collaboration with author Liu Cixin, who is behind the science fiction novel, The Three-Body Problem.

This will represent the property’s second foray into the western side of gaming, with Arena of Valor (the localized version of Honor of Kings) getting a lukewarm response. However, the success of the game in the publisher’s home country made this move inevitable.

Ubisoft Is Stepping Into the Blockchain and NFTS Arena

2 years 5 months ago

In what will likely remain a divisive trend, Ubisoft has announced its plans to go into development for blockchain games as well as non-fungible tokens (NFTs). How this will affect gamers remain a key question, but it is clear that Ubisoft has been working on such plans for quite some time now.

As reported by the International Business Times, the company will be integrating blockchain technology into future Ubisoft titles. Play-to-earn elements will also be included to allow players to earn content just from playing.

“As you see, this industry is changing regularly with lots of new revolutions happening,” Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot shared in a recent earnings call.

“We consider blockchain one of those revolutions. It will imply more play-to-earn that will enable more players to actually earn content, own content, and we think it’s going to grow the industry quite a lot. So we have been working with lots of small companies going on the blockchain, and we’re starting to have a good know-how on how we can impact the industry. We want to be one of the key players there.”

The increasing prevalence of both blockchain technology and NFTs is not just limited to Ubisoft alone. Platforms like Steam has already made its stance clear, outlawing applications that have elements of the technology involved. The Epic Games Store, however, does have developers who are utilizing blockchain technology.

Despite all good intentions, there is definitely a negative impact brought about by the use of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies in general. The environmental damage caused by mining and usage of cryptocurrencies is not to be taken likely.

Far Cry 6 Dominoes Becomes Explosive in This Hilariously Exaggerated Fan Edit

Far Cry 6 is one of those games that can keep you entertained for hours on end. Whether you’re completing story missions, side stories, or hunting down the bevy of great loot, there is always something interesting to explore throughout Yara.

Bloodborne PS1 Demake Set for January Launch on PC

2 years 5 months ago

Even as PlayStation continues to port over more games to the PC platform, eager fans are still awaiting any potential news about a Bloodborne port. There has not been much news about that, but now we have something else to satiate our hunger for more of that FromSoftware goodness in the form of the Bloodborne PS1 Demake.

It has everything you would expect from a demake – low-poly foes, a haunting soundtrack, and of course, the CRT effects that truly transports us back to an earlier age. The new trailer definitely impresses in a much different way compared to modern game trailers.

In terms of content, the Bloodborne PS1 Demake will include fights with the likes of the Lost Hunter, Huntsman, Rabid Dog, Troll, Carrion Crow, Werewolf, Hunter, and up to the Father Gascoigne boss fight. There are even extended areas to look forward to and bonus post-game content.

The aesthetics are captured perfectly, especially with the enlarged UI and the various elements of gaming from yesteryear. Moreover, it adds more pace to the proceedings, with movement and attacks being much swifter as compared to its inspiration. This will allow fans to experience something entirely different within the context of a familiar game.

The Bloodborne PS1 Demake will be launching for free on January 31, 2022. For those keen to tinker with it, developer Lilith Walther also shared that the source code would be made available a few months after launch. You can check out the trailer below:

What's In The Fortnite Item Shop Today - November 2, 2021: El Chapulín Colorado Arrives

2 years 5 months ago

While the Fortnite Item Shop is no longer full of Halloween costumes, there's still a lot of dressing up to be done if you've got V-Bucks burning a hole in your e-wallet. Today's new shop items include a brand-new crossover skin, though you'd be forgiven if you're unfamiliar with the source material. Here's everything new in the Fortnite Item Shop for November 2, 2021.

The newest item in today's shop update is the El Chapulín Colorado skin. The jarring hero is modeled after a 1970's Mexican sitcom that parodied the superhero sagas of its time. The leading man, El Chapulín Colorado, or The Red Grasshopper, was played by Roberto Gómez Bolaños, who also created the series.

Personally, I'm saving my money for a Karl Havoc skin.

It's his likeness that comes to the game, though also on offer are several variants in case you'd rather put a different avatar in his inarguably stylish attire. Here's everything in the El Chapulín Colorado set:

Apex Legends Needs A New Support Character

2 years 5 months ago

All of Apex Legends' characters are divided into one of four classes: offensive, defensive, recon, or support. With Ash coming to Apex Legends in Season 11: Escape, the battle royale game is getting another offensive legend, bringing the total number of playable characters to 19. Of the 19, eight are offensive characters, four are defensive, five are recon, and two are support. Apex Legends needs a new support legend.

The support class was originally the hardest of Apex Legends' classes to define. At launch, Apex Legends' two support legends were Lifeline and Pathfinder, with the implication that support characters were legends that had abilities geared towards assisting their allies, with Lifeline as the resident healer and Pathfinder helping people move about the map. But several legends were able to do what Pathfinder can do, and so questions sprung up in the community as to why he was classified as a support legend and not, say, Wraith or Octane.

This issue was ultimately addressed in Season 4: Assimilation and Season 5: Fortune's Favor. In Season 4, Pathfinder was changed to recon, matching Bloodhound and Crypto as an information-gatherer. Then in Season 5, Loba was added to the game as the new second support legend, finally solidifying the class into what it is today--characters with at least two abilities that allow them to aid their allies in securing loot and/or healing. Lifeline does this with her D.O.C. Healing Drone and Care Package, while Loba fulfills her class role with Eye for Quality and Black Market Boutique.

Remedy's Sam Lake On Revisiting Alan Wake With Control, Alan Wake Remastered: "It's All Positive"

2 years 5 months ago

Between adding to its story in Control and revamping the game's visuals with Alan Wake Remastered, Remedy Entertainment has suddenly brought cult classic Alan Wake back to its fans in a big way. More than 10 years after its original release, the remaster also makes Alan Wake available to a new audience--both younger players and PlayStation console owners for whom it was never available before.

While the update work in Alan Wake Remastered mostly focuses on giving the game, originally released on Xbox 360 and PC, a graphical overhaul, it also provided Remedy a chance to look back at what it had created. For Remedy creative director Sam Lake, who was the lead writer on Alan Wake, returning to the story and adding to it in Control didn't lead to a lot of feelings of what could have been, but instead, excitement about what Remedy had achieved.

"Time is a funny thing. Coming out of the project, after being so focused on making it, trying to get everything in, you often see a lot of the problems or miss the things that didn't make it in," Lake said in an email to GameSpot. "Coming back to an older work, mercifully, all of that has faded away and you can look at the work with fresh eyes, appreciate it as a whole, and not miss those details. So, it's all positive. I am, and we are, very proud of Alan Wake. It makes me very happy. And many elements invented there are still part of the Remedy game formula, being refined further in Control, for example."
