Netflix's Gaming Service Now Available in the US

2 years 5 months ago

Netflix announced today that it has expanded its gaming service to over 190 countries, including the United States and Canada. However, the gaming feature still requires subscribers to own either an Android smartphone or tablet to play.

Netflix Games will start rolling out to the Netflix mobile app starting November 3. Users can also download Netflix games from the Google Play store starting today. Among the games included in the service is Stranger Things 3: The Game. Unfortunately, you will not be able to use a wireless controller or a mobile controller like the Razer Kishi, as the games on the Netflix Games app use touch controls only when playing in the Netflix official app.

Netflix notes that its games app requires a subscription to its streaming service, and that there are no ads, additional fees, or microtransactions. While iOS support is not available yet, Netflix says it will roll out "in the coming months."

Morbius Movie Explained: Who Is Jared Leto's Spider-Man Spin-Off Character?

2 years 5 months ago

Most of the time, vampires are the villains in Hollywood movies. They're portrayed as soulless bloodsuckers who pose an existential threat to all humanity. But sometimes even a vampire can be a hero. That's the case with Morbius, a Marvel hero who's set to be portrayed by Jared Leto in Sony's upcoming Spider-Man spin-off movie.

The first trailer for Morbius revealed an unexpected Spider-Man connection, and the second trailer has now arrived. Here's everything you need to know about the man they call "The Living Vampire."

Morbius Explained: The Basics

Dr. Michael Morbius was a respected biochemist suffering from a rare and fatal blood disease. Desperate for a cure, Morbius performed dangerous experiments on himself using vampire bat DNA and inadvertently transformed into a "living vampire." While he wasn't actually bitten by one of the many vampires that live in the Marvel Universe, Morbius' condition has many of the same symptoms. He has a never-ending thirst for blood and must forever live apart from human society.

Century: Age of Ashes - The Final Preview

2 years 5 months ago

As a person who waited in a very small line to grab a launch PlayStation 3 and dragon-riding action disappointment Lair, you could say that any talk of flying scaly wyrms fighting in a video game both bristles my scales and ignites my curiosity. After spending some preview time with Century: Age of Ashes, I’m newly optimistic that mid-air monster battles don’t have to just be flights of fancy.

Century is a third person multiplayer shooter that feels more akin to Ace Combat than Panzer Dragoon at first. Teams of three or six riders take to the skies to burn and blast their enemies to secure kills and objectives across a handful of maps and play modes. Before I did any of that, though, I had to take a pass through the tutorial mode, which does a great job at teaching you the many technical aspects of flight, as well as offensive and defensive maneuvers to dominate your airspace with. I initially learned the controls on my keyboard, but soon switched to an Xbox controller with zero down time needed to readjust to the new layout.

Microsoft Says Its Metaverse Will Include Xbox Gaming

2 years 5 months ago

Facebook gets a metaverse. Fortnite gets a metaverse. Heck, you get a metaverse. Now, Microsoft has planted its own metaverse flag and it will apparently include Xbox gaming, too.

This news comes by way of a new Bloomberg report that details Microsoft’s overall metaverse plans, which will reportedly include PowerPoint and Excel in a 3D virtual space. This news comes just days after Facebook announced that it was creating its own metaverse, going as far as to change its actual name to Meta, as reported by The Verge.

Facebook’s metaverse course also includes gaming, namely in its Oculus Quest 2 brand, but Microsoft’s inclusion of Xbox could be much bigger as the latter is much larger than the virtual reality platform. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in an interview with Bloomberg that Xbox is already home to some metaverses.

“You can absolutely expect us to do things in gaming,” Nadella said. “If you take Halo as a game, it is a metaverse. Minecraft is a metaverse, and so is Flight Sim. In some sense, they are 2D today, but the question is, can you now take that to a full 3D world, and so we absolutely plan to do so.”

Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation Reveals New Girl Koharu

2 years 5 months ago

While the Dead or Alive franchise appears to be dormant on consoles, the free-to-play PC game Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation continues to grow its roster.

A brand new girl has been released today on the Japanese version of the game. Her name is Koharu and she is a student in training to become a ryokan manager.

She is eighteen years old, 151 cm tall, and her blood type is A. She loves cleaning, classical Japanese literature, and table tennis, on top of Tsubaki-mochi (rice cakes with camelia leaves) and fruit-flavored milk.

Her favorite color is bright yellow, and her birthday is on December 22.

She’s voiced by Maria Naganawa, whom you may know for her roles as Laffey in Azur Lane, Lydie in Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings, and Kanna in Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid.

You can check out her trailer below.

As usual, you should not expect to get her immediately (or even in the near future) unless you’re willing to pay. Her gacha is exclusive to paid V-stones. Even if you are willing to open the wallet, the game’s abysmal percentages won’t help your quest. The usual 1.1% SSR chance is diluted down to 0.78% by a bunch of useless old SSR outfits thrown in the mix to make things unnecessarily difficult.

Marvel’s Avengers Removing Paid XP Boosters Following Player Criticism

2 years 5 months ago

The official Marvel’s Avengers Twitter account has just announced that paid XP boosts will be removed from the game by the end of the day. This means that Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors will no longer be available for purchase. However, those who already own both will still be able to use them as normal. They can also still be earned as rewards through regular play.

This statement comes after many fans and players had more than a few harsh words about the addition of these pay-to-win features. It’s true that the game doesn’t have any PvP modes, but players felt that the option to purchase experience was an unnecessary one all the same.

Here’s the official statement from the Twitter page:

5 Mystery Anime That’ll Bring Out Your Inner Detective

Nothing shows off the flexibility of anime as a medium quite like sitting down and hashing out the brightest stars of every genre. There truly is something for everyone with more coming all the time, whether you are a sub or dub watcher. The biggest hope is this list will guide you to mystery anime series you maybe haven’t heard of or watched before. With that in mind, here we go!

High-Rise Invasion

Best Mystery Anime High-Rise Invasion

High-Rise Invasion does the usual combo of mystery-horror, but in a spectacular way that makes the viewer constantly aware that safety doesn’t exist.

The show starts with Yuri Honjo on the roof of a high-rise building with surroundings that certainly look like the skyline of her city. Every roof seems to have no real way down, instead rope bridges seem to connect the buildings. The skyline stretches a very long distance, only broken by a massive spire that did not exist in the world Yuri is from.

Nintendo Hacker Gary Bowser Pleads Guilty On Piracy Charges

2 years 5 months ago

Gary Bowser, a 51-year-old Canadian hacker (and not to be confused with Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser, or... you know, Mario's nemesis), has pleaded guilty to multiple charges of hacking against Nintendo. He must now pay $4.5 million and faces up to 10 years in jail, Eurogamer reports.

Bowser initially denied allegations that he worked with hacking group Team-Xecuter, which designed and sold console modchips that allowed users to play pirated games, otherwise known as "ROMs."

The notoriously litigious Nintendo had chased after Team-Xecuter for several years. Last October, the United States government joined with Nintendo to launch a criminal prosecution of three members of the hacking group. Team-Xecuter maintained that their products were not specifically designed for piracy, and supported the "right to repair" and homebrew gaming communities.

This wasn't enough to save Bowser, who was arrested in the Dominican Republic in 2020 and deported to the United States. Bowser also operated under the name "GaryOPA," operating and writing for a site called MaxConsole, which frequently covered Team-Xecuter software. The U.S. government indicated that his relationship with Team-Xecuter ran deeper than being a mere writer, alleging he advertised and trafficked illegal hacking software.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite AR Game to Shut Down Next Year

2 years 5 months ago

Niantic and WB Games have announced that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be shutting down on January 31, 2022.

In a blog post, Niantic announced that starting on December 6, 2021, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be removed from the App Store, Google Play, and Galaxy Store before support ends completely the following January.

“When we launched Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, our vision was to allow players to experience the wizarding world right in their real-world surroundings as they stepped outside and explored their neighborhoods,” the developers said in a blog post.

As Niantic sunsets Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, there will be some final gameplay tweaks added including increased rewards, reduced brew times, and more XP. Niantic also revealed some final events for Wizards Unite taking place in the final three months of operation.

Like Pokemon Go, Wizard Unite required players to interact with the real world through their smartphones. Players could encounter magical creatures to fight, choose a Hogwarts house and wand, and craft potions, or partake in other activities.

But while Pokemon Go has been a worldwide hit, Wizards Unite doesn’t appear to have hit the same heights. According to numbers provided by Sensor Tower, Harry Potter: Wizard Unite generated close to $40 million from player spending. By comparison, Pokemon Go has accumulated nearly $5.5 billion over its lifespan and generated almost $1.1 billion this year alone.

Fortnite Updates: What’s Different with Chapter 3 and the Arrival of Spider-Man

2 years 4 months ago

For the second time, the inhabitants of Fortnite have met their collective end with the close of Chapter 2, Season 8. In its wake comes Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 1 – an updated Battle Royale experience with new gameplay mechanics, an altered island map, and a Battle Pass featuring Spider-Man.

Fortnite Update: Chapter 3, Season 1 Map Changes

Recent events in Fortnite have ushered in sweeping changes to its island map. Fans can not only expect to see altered versions of familiar places, but there will be new locations as well, including Spider-Man/Peter Parker’s own Daily Bugle.

Marvel’s iconic newspaper facility won’t be the only new area worth exploring, as The Sanctuary, The Seven’s secret base of operations, has been revealed as well.

Fortnite: New Gameplay Mechanics

Beyond new characters and map changes, Fortnite Chapter 3 adds new traversal mechanics. These include the ability to slide about in hopes of evading enemy fire or the new swinging mechanic that allows you to mimic Spidey’s movements.

Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 1 also introduces the biggest game-changing feature since Reboot Vans in Camps. These special locations will allow you and your squadmates to store items to be used in later matches. Not only that, it’ll also allow you heal up after taking damage.

Fans can expect new items and weapons scattered all over the island. If utilized well (and with a bit luck) they’ll be able to get multiple Victory Royales and potentially earn the new Victory Crown. This digital accolade will certainly encourage competitive play.

Ex-Skullgirls’ Devs Next Game Is Just One Project Backed By This New Games Fund

2 years 5 months ago

In their years working with small developers through cooperative-owned gaming label Glitch, CEO Evva Karr noticed a serious problem.

While Karr had encountered many small, diverse game development teams with talented creators and brilliant ideas that they believed could be incredibly successful, those teams were struggling. Some didn't have the initial funding needed to get their projects started, while others simply lacked the practical knowledge to even publish a game. Making it, sure, but what about pitching it to publishers, marketing it, releasing it on consoles, or running a studio as a business? Turns out, none of that information is easily accessible to a lot of up and coming developers.

What's more, Karr felt that gaming audiences were being woefully underserved. Diverse individuals: women, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, all play games, but frequently don't get the same opportunities to make games that have been made by the historically white and male industry over the decades. Fortunately, through Glitch, Karr was in a position to do something.

Nintendo Switch Production Down 20% Due to Chip Shortages

2 years 5 months ago

Nintendo's Switch production will fall 20% below its original projection this fiscal year. The total number of units produced for the console now will only be 24 million through March.

According to a report from Nikkei, the issue comes from a shortage of semiconductors and other electronic parts, as well as strong demand for the console, such as the latest OLED version. Around spring, components such as microcomputers caused production bottlenecks, and Nintendo scaled down its production targets because the company was not able to get enough parts.

The original plan was to produce about 30 million Nintendo Switch units, a record number due to more people spending time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We are assessing their impact on our production," a Nintendo spokesperson said. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa admitted that the company was not able to make as many Switch units as it would have wanted because of the uncertainty issues surrounding production. However, he also explained that demand for the Switch is still going strong.

As of August this year, Nintendo had sold a little over 89 million units of the Nintendo Switch, surpassing both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in lifetime sales. Additionally, Nintendo Switch also swept the Japanese sales charts for one week, with the 30 best-selling games coming from one console. It was a feat that hadn't been accomplished since the Famicom in 1988.

How To Say Goodbye Is A Puzzle Game Inspired By Children's Books About Accepting Loss

2 years 5 months ago

Coping with death and the grief that follows it is challenging and one of the few experiences everyone confronts sooner or later. How to Say Goodbye, an enchanting puzzle game from one of the minds of Monument Valley 2, finds an adorable, perhaps more palatable avenue for accepting loss.

Players explore a world filled with spirits as the ghost of a recently departed person. According to publisher Arte France, the goal is to escape the “liminal space between life and death in which they are trapped.” That means sliding the floor and surrounding decor to guide the ghost through tricky environments to an exit. The grid-based areas allow horizontal and vertical movement, but you’ll also have to contend with dark spirits hindering your paths. Since many of the spirits are still grappling with the reality of their demise, escaping symbolizes the acceptance of your death by allowing yourself to move on.

Diablo IV and Overwatch 2 Delayed by Activision

2 years 5 months ago

During today’s financial conference call for investors and analysts, Activision Blizzard executives announced delays for Diablo IV and Overwatch 2.

While the writing was pretty much on the wall, today we hear the official word that both games have been delayed, while no information has been mentioned on how long the delay will be for either game. The wording of the announcement definitely appears to indicate that they will both launch after 2022.

We hear that Activision has worked with new leaders at Blizzard and within the franchises themselves, including developers in key creative roles, and it has become apparent that the games planned for 2022 will benefit from more development time to reach their full potential.

While the development teams have made “great strides” toward the completion of the games, Activision believes that giving them extra time to complete production and continue growing their creative resources to support them after launch, will ensure that they will “delight and engage their communities for many years in the future.”

On the other hand, Diablo Immortal remains on track to release in the first half of 2022.

Activision also mentioned that the delays will push out the financial gains expected for next year, but the publisher is confident that this is the right decision for developers, players, and the long-term success of the franchises.

Riders Republic Review – Obnoxious Potential

2 years 5 months ago

Riders Republic on PS4

Extreme sports have always been my jam. Whether it was playing video games like SSX Trickey, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, and Skate or the brief period I lived in Park City snowboarding the day away, I can never say no to the adrenaline rush that comes alongside experiencing these crazy activities. So when I saw the chaos that was Ubisoft’s Riders Republic, I knew I had to give it a go.

Not too long after the tutorial section of Riders Republic, which only takes an hour if you aren’t exploring, the game opens its chaotic floodgates. Instead of hiding all of its extreme sports behind hours of progression, everything from skis to bikes to wingsuits are unlocked pretty quickly. This is accomplished by going from one event to another, unlocking new gear, equipment, sports, and activities as a result.

There is plenty of event variety for each sport as well. For example: where one bike riding event focuses on winning first place, another event emphasises pulling off the best tricks. This event variation is the same for all the other sports, with some fantastic activities that include strapping rockets to your skis or glider to make for a fun, fast-paced experience.

Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 Delayed

2 years 5 months ago

Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 are being delayed, Activision Blizzard revealed amid today's earnings report.

Activision Blizzard announced the delay in a slide titled "Update on Our Pipeline," saying that while it still plans to "deliver a substantial amount of content" next year, it is now "planning for a later launch for Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 than originally envisaged."

Update: In an SEC filing Activision Blizzard confirmed that it was anticipating a financial uplift from the release of Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 in 2022, but that is no longer the case after the delay. While Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 never received an official release window, it appears the company was targeting 2022, but now both titles are expected in 2023 or beyond.

"These are two of the most eagerly anticipated titles in the industry, and our teams have made great strides toward completion in recent quarters," Activision Blizzard said. "But we believe giving the teams some extra time to complete production and continue growing their creative resources to support the titles after launch will ensure that these releases delight and engage their communities for many years in the future."
