Mafia: Definitive Edition and Celeste lead November's PlayStation Now games

2 years 5 months ago

As the calendar flips from October to November, and you pop that sexy calculator costume back in the cupboard for another year, Sony arrives with a fresh batch of PlayStation Now titles, which this month include Mafia: Definitive Edition, Celeste, and Final Fantasy 9.

Last year's Mafia: Definitive Edition is, of course, the fancied up version of Illusion Softworks' fondly remembered open-world mobster game from 2002. This new version certainly looks the part, reimagining the 1930s city of Lost Heaven for modern hardware, but Eurogamer's Chris Tapsell didn't feel the the tweaks to its ageing gameplay were quite so successful.

DF Direct Weekly talks Halo Infinite campaign re-reveal, GTA remasters, Intel 12th Gen CPUs

2 years 5 months ago

Another week, another DF Direct Weekly and our show kicks off with the re-reveal of Halo Infinite's campaign - the source of much controversy upon its initial showing last year. From my perspective, it's a solid showing with clear improvements in many areas of the visual presentation, plus a lot more thought put into the edit. However, questions persist: we're still only seeing just one environment when the initial engine reveal promised so much more. Also, it's not yet clear what Halo has to gain from its metamorphosis into a full open world beyond upgrade paths and resource management - but with just over a month before release, answers should be forthcoming in short order.

Beyond that, the team discuss last week's full-throated reveal of the Intel 12th Gen Core architecture, which is perhaps so radical, Intel might have perhaps considered dropping the Core brand altogether and coming up with something new to hammer home the scale of the achievement here. Running on a new fabrication node and combining more powerful performance processing cores with smaller efficiency cores, single thread performance looks state of the art, while multi-core capabilities seem to be up there with AMD's brilliant Ryzen 9 5950X - the CPU that I chose myself for my own workstation. Power efficiency? Well you can ramp up the processor to max power for best performance, but there are still remarkable perf per watt gains against prior Intel chips at lower power points.

Uncharted 3's Director Reveals the Origin Of the Famous Cargo Plane Sequence On Its 10th Anniversary

2 years 5 months ago

Uncharted 3's most memorable sequence is undoubtedly Nathan Drake's running battle through a cargo plane in midflight. It's peak Naughty Dog action design, steadily escalating until Drake finds himself hanging desperately from a cargo net over the desert.

Hard as it is to believe, Uncharted 3 is now 10 years old, having first released on PS3 on November 1, 2011. To mark the occasion, several of its original developers came together to share their memories of Uncharted 3's development. They include building the cargo plane sequence, which then-designer Kurt Margenau says was the first time in his career he had a chance to build such a setpiece.

"It was truly a collaborative effort with animators, programmers, sound designers, and anyone else who cared to contribute. It started with an off-the-cuff idea of, 'What if you could chase down a plane on the tarmac and board it,' which turned into, 'Ok, what if the plane crashed while you were in it?' and then figuring out how that could even work and be playable," Margenau remembers.

The scene was born of Naughty Dog's desire to keep escalating after Uncharted 2, which left the studio confident that it could "achieve whatever wild-ass blockbuster ideas we could think up to one-up ourselves."

Returnal's Suspend Feature Can Be Turned Into a Full Save

2 years 5 months ago

Returnal's recent 2.0 update finally gave players a method to suspend their game, turn off their PS5, and return to the suspend point to continue their run. The catch? That suspend point erases when you return, meaning you can still absolutely bungle a run in the next area and have to run through the lengthy, punishing roguelike world all over again. Now players have discovered an exploit that turns that suspend point into a full-blown save point can be reloaded again and again like the save scumming monsters we are.

As described by Inverse writer Joseph Yaden (and reported by Kotaku), the exploit requires you to suspend your save in-game, upload your save to PlayStation's cloud servers, and then when you die, download the save from the cloud. This will allow you to return to your suspend point as many times as you want as long as it's in the cloud, since it can't be erased.

Stardew Valley's official board game adaptation goes back on sale this Wednesday

2 years 5 months ago

Earlier this year, developer Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone surprised fans with news that Stardew Valley was making the jump to the tabletop with an official board game adaptation. Unfortunately, the first batch went fast - but those that missed out on the initial run now have a second chance at acquiring the game, with orders re-opening this Wednesday.

Online orders will once again only be available for shipping within the US, but Barone says he's teamed up with a number of distributors in the UK, the EU, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand this time around, and that copies will be available directly from local stores in these regions. "It's not possible for us to keep track of which stores specifically," he adds, "so the best way is to contact your local store and ask if they are carrying copies.

Unpacking Review

2 years 5 months ago

In real life, moving is the worst. In Unpacking, described by its creators as a “zen puzzle game,” settling into a new place is surprisingly comforting. Unpacking takes you through a series of homes representing an invisible protagonist’s life from 1997 to 2018, and as it turns out, you can tell a lot about a person by the things they take with them. Though the mechanics are simple and the campaign can be completed in a handful of hours, Unpacking is a memorable, delightful game that shows that there are still new ways to tell stories in video games out there.

You might not think stacking plates and organizing books is compelling, but strangely, it really is. Part of that might have to do with how often you’ve pulled up stakes. For me, it was a lot: between the ages of 18 and 26, I moved more than half a dozen times. Packing and unpacking became an almost annual ritual as I transitioned through a series of apartments in various neighborhoods throughout the Philadelphia area. None of these places ever felt like home until I started unpacking: taping the David Bowie poster with torn edges to the wall, finding a flat surface for my ancient record player, and lining up my Harry Potter books in chronological order on the shelves. Settling into the next place always felt like a new chapter of my life was starting, and that’s a feeling Unpacking captures well.

Halo Infinite Map Remakes Not Ruled Out, But Don't Expect Many

2 years 5 months ago

One of Halo's traditions is for new games to feature remakes of multiplayer maps from past games, but 343 is changing things up a little bit with Halo Infinite. Lead multiplayer designer Andrew Witts told IGN that the studio is more interested in creating all-new playspaces. That said, players will notice that some of Halo Infinite's maps are inspired by classic maps, and overall, 343 isn't ruling out the possibility of remakes. But the overall goal is to make Halo Infinite's maps feel distinct and new.

Witts pointed out that the Big Team Battle map Fragmentation is a good example of what 343 is trying to achieve. The map is seemingly inspired by Halo 3's Valhalla, which itself takes cues from Halo: Combat Evolved's Blood Gulch.

"I think that what we've done with [the Big Team Battle map] Fragmentation is something we want; we want things to feel new, but we want things to be a bit reminiscent without giving you the exact same layout or the same layout with slight differences, because we're a different game with different needs," Witts said.

"There are some maps that have been coming out in almost every single iteration of Halo. So I wouldn't say we would never do a remake," Witts added. "But again, we're doing a spiritual reboot, so we look at how we kind of put our own twist on it, but still make it feel like a little bit of a nostalgia trip when you kind of run through them."

Lead multiplayer designer Cayle George said the team experimented with one-to-one ports of previous Halo maps, but "they don't work well."

WoW Game Director Says Patch 9.1.5 Is A "New Perspective Going Forward"

2 years 5 months ago

To say it's been a turbulent few months at Blizzard would be an understatement. Leadership changes, in-game protests, employee walkouts, and campaigns calling on players to cancel their World of Warcraft subscriptions have caused Blizzard to go from one of the most beloved names in the video game industry to one associated with deeply troubling sexual harassment and discrimination allegations outlined in multiple lawsuits and investigations.

Changes both big and small have come to Blizzard and its flagship title as a result. The World of Warcraft team put out multiple statements laying out their plans to make Azeroth a more welcoming and inclusive place, and while some of those changes are already live, many of them are set to happen with the release of the upcoming patch 9.1.5 for World of Warcraft's latest expansion, Shadowlands.

As the first patch to be released in the wake of the ongoing fallout from the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing's initial lawsuit against Activision Blizzard, it's clear based on a recent interview that World of Warcraft game director Ion Hazzikostas intends for patch 9.1.5 to be a major turning point for both the development team and for Blizzard's MMORPG. Whether it's looking to create a more open, safe work environment or attempting to cast off nearly two decades' worth of assumptions about what World of Warcraft can be, Hazzikostas described patch 9.1.5 as the start of a "new perspective" for the game going forward.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's PlayStation Exclusive Content Is Unlocking For Everyone Else Tomorrow

2 years 5 months ago

After a year of being sequestered to PlayStation platforms, PC and Xbox players can finally try out a new Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's Zombies mode starting tomorrow. The mode, titled Onslaught, has players fight against waves of the undead in a desperate, difficult attempt to survive.

Unlike Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's main Zombies mode, Onslaught places players on one of the game's multiplayer maps rather than one specially designed for zombie-fighting. Players won't be able to run around as much as they want either, as they spawn next to a Dark Aether Orb that serves as their safe zone. Moving outside of the zone deals players constant damage.

In regular Zombies fashion, players have to survive waves of the undead, as well as periodic special waves where elite zombies spawn.

The game mode initially launched in October 2020, but starting at 9 PM PT on November 2 / 12 AM ET on November 3, players on PC and Xbox will be able to give Onslaught a try.

Looking towards the future of Call of Duty, the franchise could get a lot gorier. Before Call of Duty Vanguard has even released, a sweeping amount of information on Call of Duty 2022 has reportedly leaked out. According to the leaked information, the game will include a morality system akin to Red Dead Redemption 2's as well as extremely graphic depictions of gore. Enemies will lose their limbs and apply pressure to wounds to stop bleeding, and when shot, may insult the player, beg for their mother, or convulse.

New Halo Infinite Multiplayer Map, Streets, Revealed In Gameplay Video

2 years 5 months ago

343 Industries has revealed a brand-new multiplayer map for Halo Infinite. Called "Streets," the map takes place on the streets of New Mombasa. It is a smaller-sized map made with 4v4 matches in mind. As you can see in the overview trailer below, Streets is an asymmetrical map with no specific bases. Instead, players will spawn at different points throughout the match.

Additionally, the map features environmental elements like palm trees to help limit sightlines so snipers won't have such an easy time. Lead multiplayer designer Cayle George says in the video that Strongholds and Oddball are two of the modes that play the best on Streets. Because it's an asymmetrical map, Capture the Flag won't be officially supported, but players can create it themselves in Custom Games. Check out the video below to see the map in action.

Streets joins the maps Bazaar, Recharge, Live Fire, Behemoth, and Fragmentation that were featured in the Halo Infinite beta tests earlier this year. Microsoft has not announced how many maps Halo Infinite will have in total, but the game's multiplayer leans heavily into the live service category, so fans can presumably expect more to be added over time.

Uncharted 3 Was "Broken" In The 11th Hour, Dev Reveals On Game's 10th Anniversary

2 years 5 months ago

Naughty Dog's Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception was released on November 1, 2011, meaning today is the game's 10th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the studio published a blog post featuring insights and behind-the-scenes stories from the team that worked on it. The whole post is well worth a read, but there is one story that really stands out.

Naughty Dog vice president Christian Gyrling revealed in the post that, just days before the studio planned to send the game to Sony for manufacturing, what turned out to be a very serious set of bugs were discovered in the testing process. The bugs and glitches--which in some cases turned the ocean blood red and completely zapped some levels--were serious enough for the studio to question whether or not it could release the game.

"I myself brought the game home and started playing the game from the beginning. After a few hours of playing, the game started having glitches. The glitches got worse and worse until enemies would be invisible, the ocean became blood red, and levels would be outright missing. I freaked out, and the next morning, I walked into [Naughty Dog president Evan Wells'] office saying, 'We can't ship the game like this,'" Gyrling said. "Playing the game for a few hours on older PS3s would in almost all cases result in a broken game experience."

But Gyrling had an idea for what was causing the issue, and to test the hypothesis, the team created two versions of the game.

Battlefield 2042 Trailer Shows Off PC-Specific Features Including Ray Tracing

2 years 5 months ago

The Battlefield franchise has always been at home on PCs rather than consoles, and that isn't changing with Battlefield 2042. When the game launches in just a couple of weeks, PC players who have the right hardware in their gaming rigs will be able to run the game with some of Nvidia's choice gaming features including DLSS, Nvidia Reflex, and some light ray tracing.

DLSS, Nvidia's AI upscaling technique, is why a majority of ray tracing compatible games can run at a 4K resolution at the same time. For Battlefield 2042 players, the feature's inclusion should mean a clearer picture of the battlefield, and all the enemies in it. That being said, players won't necessarily need to turn on DLSS to run Battlefield 2042 at 4K even with the game's ray tracing options enabled.

Call Of Duty 2022 Details Reportedly Leak, Revealing Gore-Filled Drug War And Warzone Plans

2 years 5 months ago

This year's Call of Duty game, Vanguard, isn't even out yet, but rumors surrounding 2022's game continue to take shape. New information suggests the campaign will take inspiration from movies like Traffic, No Country for Old Men, and Sicario, and is described as "gritty and unrelenting." The game could have a morality system like Red Dead Redemption 2, and the campaign will apparently feature a new level of gore for the series. As reported previously, 2022's game is rumored to be a sequel to 2019's Modern Warfare from Infinity Ward, focusing on Colombian drug cartels.

Twitter user @ralphsvalve unearthed a trove of unannounced details about 2022's Call of Duty game, and some of the pieces were corroborated by VGC's own sources. The site has accurately reported on unannounced Call of Duty details many times before.

According to the leak, 2022's Call of Duty game is described as "grim" and gruesome." Enemies who are shot may not die immediately and could call out for their mothers, hallucinate, and convulse before biting the dust, according to the report. The gore is described as "realistic," and bullet penetration will be based on the calibre of the bullet, according to the report. Players can also apply pressure to wounds to stop the bleeding, the leak suggests.

The game is also rumored to have a "moral compass" system similar to Red Dead Redemption 2 where key decisions could impact moments later in the game. For the story, the tagline is apparently, "There's no winners in this story," which might be commentary on the war on drugs.

Xbox Game Pass For November 2021 Includes GTA San Andreas, Forza Horizon 5, Minecraft, And More

2 years 5 months ago

It's a new month, and that means a fresh set of titles are coming to Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft has now listed off nine titles coming to the catalog in the first half of November, with presumably a second wave to be announced later, if history is any indication.

Starting off, Minecraft: Java and Bedrock editions are coming to Game Pass on PC beginning November 2. The game is already available on Game Pass for Xbox, but this is the first time the open-ended sandbox game will be on Game Pass for PC, and it features cross-play with all versions. Then on November 4, the critical darling co-op game It Takes Two comes to Game Pass for console, cloud, and PC through EA Play for Game Pass Ultimate members.

The immensely popular Football Manager series coming to Game Pass on November 9 with the day-and-date launch of Football Manager 22 for PC. Football Manager 2022: Xbox Edition is also available day one on Game Pass for console that day.

Fortnite Chapter 3 May Be Coming Next Month, Fan Theory Suggests

Fortnite Chapter 3 may be much closer than people once thought, according to a fan theory growing in popularity. With Season 8 set to turn over in early December, conventional wisdom said that would usher in Season 9 with its own new theme and gameplay mechanics. Instead, a number of pieces of evidence now suggest we may be in the final days of Fortnite Chapter 2. We've compiled all the evidence so far. You be the judge.

Fortnite Chapter 3 Theory

While some clues are older, the suggestion of Season 9 being wiped out in favor of Chapter 3 really began to pick up steam when Fortnite influencer FNChiefAko (aka Ako) pieced together a few hints from the in-game items that seem to suggest reality as we know it on Apollo is coming to a dramatic end.

It Takes Two, GTA, & Forza Horizon 5 Highlight Latest Batch of Xbox Game Pass Games Coming This Month

2 years 5 months ago

The Xbox Game Pass team, as they do each month, has updated all of us on what to expect this month and the lineup is looking pretty, pretty, strong.

For starters, the excellent co-op game and dare I say game of the year contender, It Takes Two will arrive on the service this week on Nov. 4. If you got a buddy to play with, we highly recommend giving It Takes Two a go as it is one of the most charming and fun co-op games to release in quite some time.

The big-time Xbox Series X|S and PC exclusive, Forza Horizon 5 arrives on Nov. 9 as well and is the case for all Xbox in-house developed games, you’ll be able to pick that one up for free on Xbox Game Pass on day 1 if you’re a subscriber.

Finally, If you are in the mood for some PS1 nostalgia or somehow haven’t played GTA: San Andreas yet, then you can pick up GTA: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition this month as well on Nov. 11. This version of the game, unlike the original Xbox version of it, includes improved controls, lighting, and textures for a smoother experience.

Other games coming this month include:

  • Minecraft: Java and Bedrock Editions (PC) – Nov. 2
  • Unpacking (Cloud, Console, and PC) ID@Xbox – Nov. 2
  • Kill It with Fire (Cloud, Console, and PC) ID@Xbox – Nov. 4
  • Football Manager 2022 (PC) – Nov. 9
  • One Step from Eden (Console and PC) ID@Xbox – Nov. 11
