The Eurogamer Podcast: how racing games defined one of our finest

2 years 5 months ago

One thing the Eurogamer Podcast was really good at in the past was giving our writers a way to show themselves outside of the pieces they write for the site. I think this provided an opportunity for you to get to know us, beyond the words, as people, which we are, horns and tails and hooves aside. And I didn't want to lose that with the new incarnation of the Podcast, because it's nice to show you who we are, and there aren't many opportunities for it.

That's why I want to steadily pull in members of the Eurogamer team and talk to them the same way I would any of my guests, and have them share their lives and experiences and build a picture of who they are. My guinea pig for the first of these is someone who has been - and will continue to be - front and centre of Eurogamer for years: deputy editor Martin Robinson. He celebrated his 10th anniversary here earlier this year, and we love him for his reliably contrary views and unrelenting passion for racing games.

Weird West: The First Hands-On

2 years 5 months ago

The Weird West is a brutal place to live. The prairie boomtowns are overrun with bloodthirsty outlaws, the vengeful undead are climbing out of their graves, and scheming witches are brewing dark magic on the outskirts of society. A heavy, dirgeful soundtrack follows the player everywhere as they cash in bounties, stave off the carnivorous wildlife, and stay one step ahead of everyone who wants to see them dead. In Wolfeye Studios' debut game, everyone is a suspect and nobody should be trusted; good thing you always have your trusty revolver.

Wolfeye Studios is composed of former Arkane veterans, and unsurprisingly, Weird West is steeped in that ill-defined "immersive sim" subgenre emblematized by games like Dishonored and Prey. This is a top-down action-RPG with a huge swathe of incisive, interlocking systems — all working in unison to submerge the player in this perverse interpretation of the American frontier. Weird West has multiple protagonists, but I spent my time with the game under the guise of an amnesiac bounty hunter tracking down her missing husband. You navigate to each encounter by moving from point to point on an all-encompassing map of the backcountry. As players carve through the main quest, they'll stumble into side quests, random encounters, and the occasional mysterious locale off the beaten track. My favorite of those was a band of mysterious cultists guarding a stone temple that seemed to hold some ancient, terrible secrets. It's exactly what you want out of a single-player adventure set in a beguiling, eldritch universe; the feeling that there's always another macabre layer of intrigue left to find.

Fortnite China Shuts Down This Month

2 years 5 months ago

Fortnite

Even if you’ve never dropped from the party bus, you’ve probably heard of Epic Games’ Fortnite. With large-scale crossover events and concerts, impressively generous content rollouts, record-shattering Twitch numbers, and numerous pop culture references, the cartoonish battle royale continues to have a widespread impact on multiple entertainment industries. However, many of Fortnite’s various features have been stripped away in China. Fortnite China, as it’s known, is an exclusive test build of the popular game that’s been fine-tuned to abide by Chinese media laws. Unfortunately, this test build will cease to exist later this month; Fortnite China is shutting down.

The Book Of Boba Fett Trailer Gives First Look At The Bounty Hunter's New Criminal Empire

2 years 5 months ago

Star Wars spin-off series The Book of Boba Fett premieres on December 29 on Disney+, and a new trailer gives us our first look at Boba’s first solo outing. The story sees the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy (no offense, Mando) transition into becoming its most powerful crime lord.

The series takes place after the events of Season 2 of The Mandalorian, with Boba sitting on the throne of Jabba the Hutt’s criminal empire. In his words, Jabba relied on fear to rule, but Boba intends to lead with respect. However, not all of Jabba’s former captains seem overly enthused by the change in management, putting Boba and his partner, Fennec Shand, in the crosshairs of some of the most dangerous crimelords and cutthroats in the galaxy. We feel bad for the criminals.

Temeura Morrison and Ming-Na Wen reprise their roles as Boba Fett and Fennec Shand, respectively. The Book of Boba Fett’s executive producers include Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Colin Wilson, and Kathleen Kennedy. Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, who directed The Mandalorian’s acclaimed Season 2 episode, “The Tragedy,” directs several episodes and also has executive producer credits.

Unpacking review - incredibly satisfying tidy-'em-up

2 years 5 months ago

I don't know this virtual woman whose cartons I'm unpacking, not really - I never see her face or hear her voice, but I feel connected to her all the same, just through the act of unpacking her belongings. Unpacking is what it says on the tin, a short game about unpacking after a move, but developer Witch Beam somehow managed to fit a whole life inside, expressed through holiday souvenirs, shampoo brands and plush animals.

Unpacking follows a woman across 6 formative moves over a timespan of roughly twenty years, starting with her childhood bedroom. Each move starts with boxes, neatly stacked in a random room, inviting you to just pull things out and find a place for them. Where you place items is largely up to you - Unpacking has a few rules and is fairly strict about you just dumping things on the floor, but you're given plenty of freedom, and if you don't like that the magnetic whiteboard absolutely has to go on the fridge, you can even activate an accessibility setting that lets you put stuff wherever.

Meet Meghna Jayanth in Episode 2 of The New Eurogamer Podcast

2 years 5 months ago

Even when she was writing Harry Potter fanfiction as a child - something I'm sure she won't thank me for sharing - she was doing something she still does now: questioning the world around her and challenging the parts of she doesn't like. It's a mindset that would propel her to fame when collaborating on Inkle's celebrated narrative adventure 80 Days, as she unpicked the famous Jules Verne novel and the backwards colonial attitudes in it.

Since then, she's only gone from strength to strength, working on renowned projects such as Sunless Sea, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Boyfriend Dungeon and, more recently, open-world adventure Sable (when we talked, it had only been out a day). She is Meghna Jayanth, a leading voice in video game writing and narrative design, and this, in roughly an hour, is her life.

Haunted Chocolatier's Combat Is Being Remade 'From Scratch' Compared To Stardew Valley

2 years 5 months ago

Eric Barone (aka ConcernedApe) says that combat in his new game, Haunted Chocolatier, is being made from scratch - as opposed to being directly copied from Stardew Valley.

"Haunted Chocolatier has a greater focus on combat, so it needs to be very fun, satisfying, and engaging, while also appropriately fitting into the big picture," says Barone in a recent blog post. "You can rest assured that I’m not 'copying and pasting' Stardew’s combat. On the contrary, almost everything in Haunted Chocolatier, including the combat, is completely coded (and drawn) from scratch."

The blog post also features some accompanying footage showing the game's combat in action, which can be seen in the tweet below. Barone notes that some of the animations are different from those shown off in the game's reveal trailer. "That’s because I’m still working on everything, and it’s all a work in progress," he explains. "Everything seen so far could still change before the game is finished. If you followed the development of Stardew Valley, this will be familiar."

Id Software Hiring Staff For 'Long-Running Iconic Action FPS'

2 years 5 months ago

id Software currently has a number of job vacancies open at its Dallas offices where the studio is hoping to hire new staff members to work on the development of a "long-running iconic action FPS".

The open positions can currently be found listed on Zenimax's website. As well as stating that the developer is hiring staff to work on an already existing IP, a number of vacancy posts on the site may also provide further clues as to what that might be.

Listed under the job description for Skybox Artist, the studio says that it is looking for someone to join its existing team to provide "AAA-quality sci-fi and fantasy environmental vistas and skyboxes". While id has by no means confirmed what franchise new staff will be working on, its reference to a "sci-fi and fantasy" aesthetic could suggest that the studio is looking to begin development on a new Doom entry. Alternatively, the gothic industrial look of Quake could also be considered within the realms of sci-fi and fantasy.

Doom Eternal, id Software's last entry into the Doom series, was released last year and faired well among critics and fans alike. Feel free to check out our review of the game, which we awarded it a 9/10. While the strong critical reception could be enough to speculate that the studio may be returning to the series again for a sixth Doom, there are also a number of factors that could get Quake fans excited too.

Halo Infinite: ‘Streets’ Multiplayer Map Revealed – IGN First

2 years 5 months ago

Halo Infinite will be released on December 8, but in the meantime, IGN has exclusive coverage of Master Chief’s spiritual reboot all month long as part of our editorial IGN First “cover story” initiative. That means we’ll be dropping exclusive content throughout the month of November (and yes, we’ve played the campaign – the first four hours of it), starting with today’s reveal of a brand-new Arena multiplayer map called ‘Streets’.

As you can see in the video above with me and lead multiplayer level designer Cayle George, Streets is a small, asymmetrical battleground set in New Mombasa at night. This immediately sets it apart, visually speaking, from the other Halo Infinite multiplayer maps we’ve seen in the test flights thus far. It’s got numerous subtle artistic touches, such as the “Holodog” advertisement, the retro-style Halo Infinite arcade cabinet that plays a MIDI version of the Halo theme, the skyline you can see in the background from certain vantage points on the map, and the glass railings that you can just smash right through. It’s a very fast map with short sightlines, and I really enjoyed it.

Little Hope is the second game in The Dark Pictures Anthology, but it lands last on our list of the best games in the series. Not only did it not take any steps forward really from Man of Medan, but it actually regressed in most ways as well.

Microsoft Flight Simulator – Athens International Airport Review (FlyTampa)

2 years 5 months ago

Third-party developer FlyTampa recently released Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (LGAV) for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

It’s available on Orbx Direct for $18, which means that you can use the handy Orbx Central client to install it and keep it updated.

Thanks to its position at the center of the Mediterranean, Athens airport is an extremely interesting addition for simmers who enjoy flying not only in Greece but also all over Europe.

If you’d like an extensive look at the scenery, you can watch an ILS approach and landing on runway 03R in the first video below, and a full flyover in a variety of lighting and weather conditions in the second video.

Functionally, all the published approaches, SIDs, and STARS are implemented correctly in accordance with the charts, and the PAPI lights on all runways are functional and well-calibrated to guide you on visual approaches.

Ground services mostly work as they should, but there is no option for the refueling truck available, which still appears to be a common oversight.

Hands-On With Weird West – A Frontier Worth Exploring

2 years 5 months ago

Publisher: Devolver Digital
Developer: WolfEye Studios
Release:
Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

Weird West is the upcoming isometric twin-stick shooter from Wolfeye Studios, a relatively new developer headed by former Prey and Dishonored co-creators. It doesn’t take long to feel their immersive sim handprints. In fact, once you’re through the basics of Weird West’s twin-stick shooter action, the same combat scenario experience in games like Dishonored makes an appearance, and it’s a delight.
