The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners free Aftershocks DLC is the perfect excuse to revisit zombie-infested New Orleans

2 years 8 months ago

No game pulls off the feeling of stabbing a zombie in the head quite as well as The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners. Somehow developers Skydance have managed to conjure up an incredibly real sense of impact, literally out of thin air.

You can really feel the zombie's head crack as you plunge your blade into it, and the way the skull clamps onto the knife blade after the fact requiring you to tear it free with all your might? Well that creates a sense of immersion that's pretty much absent from any other VR game I've played.

Horizon Forbidden West Devs Discuss What’s Next For Aloy

2 years 8 months ago

Developer Guerrilla just released a post on PlayStation Blog discussing the future for Aloy in the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West. The blog post, written by Guerrilla Community Lead Bo de Vries, focuses on character storylines and art design choices.

Aloy has traveled far in her attempt to stop the red infection covering the land, pursuing her mission for six months since the events of the first game. The sequel aims to convey her strength and emotional intelligence while keeping her relatable along the way, as she comes across new tribes, companions, and hardships.

Although she has made many friends during her adventures, she still feels like an outsider, and the truth is, she has no real home. These aspects of her character will be explored in depth as she ventures into the mysterious frontier of the Forbidden West.

Ben McCaw, Guerrilla Narrative Director

From a design perspective, many teams at Guerrilla have put many hours into developing Aloy’s look, animations, equipment, and dialogue.

Lead Character Artist Bastien Ramisse goes into a bit more detail by saying the following:

We also believe that meticulously placed details are part of immersion and tell an often unspoken story. At Guerrilla, we are always eager to explore and expand the identities and cultures of our tribes.

You can read up on everything mentioned above and more in the PlayStation Blog post. It even contains an Aloy cosplay guide for those who are interested.

Diablo II: Resurrected Is Great for Newcomers… If You’re Willing to Put In the Time

2 years 8 months ago

I feel I must acknowledge right off the bat that I’m pretty much a series newbie when it comes to Diablo. My experience with the series is limited, though I have played a considerable amount of Diablo III on PS4 and Switch. I blitzed through the campaign and would mess around with rifts, but I’m very much a casual player and if you asked me what breakpoints were, I honestly couldn’t tell you. Diablo III was easy enough to get into, but Diablo II: Resurrected? Well, that’s a whole other beast entirely.

Remastered and re-released for current consoles and PC, Diablo II: Resurrected is a very faithful recreation of the 2000 ARPG. In fact, it’s actually pretty much the same exact game except that it looks way prettier and it has controller support. You can toggle the graphics option any time you want to switch between the modern look and the grungy 2000 look and you’ll see that it’s the same game running underneath that shiny coat of paint. This makes it a total treat for longtime fans and veterans, but for newcomers, you might be inclined to give up after your first hour or so of play.

Diablo II: Resurrected doesn’t bother with extended intros or tutorials; boot up the game, watch an opening cutscene that sets the tone for the story, and you’re in. Almost immediately, I felt like I was completely out of my depth. My character moved so damn slowly, his attacks seemed so clumsy and delayed, and worst of all, inventory management and menu navigation were a complete pain with a controller.

Netflix shows off more The Witcher season 2 clips and announces season 3

2 years 8 months ago

If you thought there was any risk of Netflix dumping Geralt and company in the near future, you can rest your head easy after this weekend. They've now shown off several more clips for the upcoming second season of their main, Cavill-powered Witcher TV series and also announced that they're definitely going to be going for a third season. Not just that, but there are even more Witcher projects on the way: another animated movie, that Blood Origin series, and—for some unfathomable reason—a children's show.

Commuting home from work turns mighty spooky in this indie game

2 years 8 months ago

The Plane Effect is a moody isometric adventure game about a guy trying to get home. Pretty normal stuff, except there is a cosmic anomaly looming over the city that seems to be causing some weirdness, so good luck with that. Out now, the game will have you puzzling through levels full of high-contrast moody lighting. It reminds me a bit of Inside, if Inside had rooms full of scary-looking red lasers.

Squid Game Knockoffs Are Blowing Up on Roblox

2 years 8 months ago

One of the biggest shows currently on Netflix is the South Korean import Squid Game. Now fan-made Squid Game experiences are popping up all over Roblox.

Squid Game was released on September 17 and has quickly become one of the most buzzed-about shows on Netflix, becoming the first South Korean television show to hit the number one spot in Netflix’s Top 10.

This popularity seems to be reaching across mediums as in recent days fan-made games based on the same deadly challenges seen in Squid Game have begun cropping up all over Roblox. There are already several Squid Game Roblox remakes on the site’s “Popular” section, which is impressive as a recent investigation by People Make Games reveals just how difficult it is to get your game featured on Roblox’s front page.

The Squid Game Roblox remakes are sometimes listed under different names like “Fish Game” or “Hexa Game,” but these experiences straight-up lift the costumes and challenges directly from the Netflix series. A quick search for ‘Squid Game’ on Roblox’s site reveals even more remakes that haven’t broken into Roblox’s most popular categories.

Squid Game is a nine-episode South Korean thriller where everyday people are gathered on a remote island to play deadly children’s games for the chance to win a big cash prize and escape poverty.

Horizon Forbidden West’s Gear Provides Aloy With New Skills

2 years 8 months ago

Outfits in Horizon Forbidden West will have skills attached to them, Guerrilla Games has revealed.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog discussing how Horizon Zero Dawn's lead protagonist Aloy will shape up in the franchise's upcoming sequel, Guerrilla Games Community Lead Bo de Vries spoke about the range of outfits that will be available to Aloy throughout Horizon Forbidden West and how the studio is building up versatility within this aspect of the game.

"Horizon Forbidden West will have a range of outfits for Aloy to benefit from; similar to and perhaps familiar from the first game, outfits allow for protection against a variety of dangers that Aloy encounters and can be purchased from Merchants or found in the world," says de Vries.

"A new addition to the system is that outfits in Horizon Forbidden West have skills attached to them, so players can boost their abilities in different ways. Maximizing these skills happens through a new and improved Skill Tree, something we will tell you more about some other time."

In Horizon Zero Dawn, each outfit provides different base values of resistance to unique types of damage which could then be augmented via additional modifications. Armor across the game could be purchased from various merchants and would range from basic armor types which offered little in the way of base stats to fire and frost resistant sets that could be utilized in various situations.

Hot Wheels Unleashed Review

2 years 8 months ago

Perhaps best described as a head-on collision between an itty-bitty Burnout and a tiny Trackmania Turbo, Hot Wheels Unleashed is an endearing arcade stunt racer that feels great and looks absolutely remarkable. With tracks creatively weaved through lavishly detailed, life-sized environments, and brimming with a catalogue of cars spilled straight out of the toy bucket, developer Milestone’s decision to double down on a brand of racing 64 times smaller than usual has been a consummate success.

Highly accessible yet full of advanced techniques, devilish shortcuts, and creative tools to master, Hot Wheels Unleashed is one of the best, most customisable, and most imaginative arcade racers I’ve played in at least a decade.

Hot Wheels Unleashed recreates the world’s most popular die-cast cars in their authentic scale, and in environments where they’re dwarfed by barn-sized basketballs and boom boxes as big as buildings. This makes Hot Wheels Unleashed more in line with pint-sized peers like 1998’s Hot Wheels Stunt Track Driver or 2007’s Hot Wheels Beat That! as opposed to styleless duds like Hot Wheels Turbo Racing or Hot Wheels World’s Best Driver, which simply super-sized the toys to race them like regular cars.

Staying tiny was a terrific choice, and not simply because the atmosphere is endlessly more charming at toy scale; the 1:1 recreations of Hot Wheels cars here are regularly nothing short of stunning.

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut Coming To Xbox Consoles Next Month

2 years 8 months ago

Zelda-Inspired Blossom Tales Is Getting A Sequel

2 years 8 months ago

Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King treated Zelda fans to a well-crafted homage to A Link to the Past when it launched in March 2017. While some argued it adhered a bit too close to the Super Nintendo classic, Game Informer editor Brian Shea nevertheless praised Blossom Tales in his 8/10 review as a “delightful take on a familiar style”. Now it’s getting a sequel.

Blossom Tales 2: The Minotaur Prince doesn’t stray from the formula of the original. The retro-art and gameplay remain the same, so expect plenty of dungeon-crawling and puzzle-solving across a vibrant 2D world. You still control the warrior Lily in an adventure steered by the same grandfather narrating your exploits to his grandkids, who can alter your encounters on a whim. Think The Princess Bride if you didn’t play the first game. There may not be any radical differences, but the game still looks like a nostalgic good time, especially if you’ve been itching for a classic Zelda experience. Plus, after developer Castle Pixel had a brush with closure in 2017, it’s nice to see the team firing back with a new game.

DF Weekly talks Nintendo Direct - and Sony has fixed PS4 CBOMB

2 years 8 months ago

Digital Foundry Direct Weekly takes on a retro-heavy theme this week as DFR mastermind John Linneman is joined by collaborator Audi Sorlie with special guest Coury Carlson - be sure to check out his amazing retro work on the My Life in Gaming YouTube channel. While a mighty chunk of this week's offering covers off the recent Nintendo Direct, elsewhere it's all about (or closely associated with) legacy gaming and preservation.

That starts with the thorny topic of the PlayStation 4's so-called CBOMB issue - a hot topic for those interested in games preservation. Essentially, the internal battery on the PS4 will eventually expire, taking with it the ability to play games but only if the console is unable to access a Sony server to validate the current date and time. This is obviously not an issue in the here and now, since Sony's servers are fully armed and operational - but what about in ten years' time? What about decades later? CBOMB didn't just impact digital purchases, but even physical releases too. The news this week is that Sony has fixed this issue with its recent firmware 9.0.

Netflix's lady assassin movie Kate is getting an action roguelike tie-in game

2 years 8 months ago

I've been positively held hostage by the lady assassin action movie trend—having been in the same room as my partner relentlessly devouring the likes of The Old Guard, Ava, Terminal, and Gunpowder Milkshake. No surprise then that I also got sucked into watching Kate, Netflix's new action movie starring assassin Mary Elizabeth Winstead and her teen hostage slash sidekick Miku Martineau. What is surprising—even though Netflix have shown an increasing interest in games—is that Kate is getting a tie-in action game called Kate: Collateral Damage. It's a fast-paced and arcade-y roguelike with some twin-stick style shooting coming out in October.

This 27-in 240Hz Samsung monitor is £229 right now (£70 off)

2 years 8 months ago

For a while, I was super into Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and I took getting better at the game very seriously. I swapped out my mouse and headset, practiced grenade line-ups for hours and even learned a few Russian phrases to try and get the respect of my match-making teammates. All these steps worked, but the real results came when I swapped my old 144Hz monitor for a 240Hz model, the Samsung CRG5. Hitting such a high frame-rate in Counter-Strike isn't difficult even on old hardware, and the increase in clarity meant hitting shots a lot easier.

If you want to follow in my footsteps, then it's good news: this 240Hz screen is going cheap on Amazon today. They're asking £229 for it, £70 off its regular price of £299, and I think that's a great deal.

The Quest Log

Tales of Arise brought a few series-firsts in terms of gameplay and quality of life changes, some of which should absolutely make a return in future entries. One of the biggest quality of life improvements is seemingly the most basic — the addition of a quest log.

Anyone who has attempted to 100% entries like Tales of Vesperia knows how much of a godsend a real quest log is. And your companion in Tales of Zestiria reminding you of your quests through dialogue doesn’t count.

Microsoft Flight Simulator F-35, F-104, Prague, & Nanki Shirahama Airports Get Screenshots & Video; Piper Tomahawk Announced

2 years 8 months ago

Third-party developers continue to deliver more and more assets and releases of new add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

First of all, IndiaFoxtEcho provided an extensive update with new screenshots of its F-35 Lightning II.

Having some fun with the Bee variant while testing the Primary Control Display (PCD), which is finally almost finished.

The PCD is the main interface for the F-35 and the pilot can access a variety of functions through its four independent “Portals”. Each portal can have two “subportals” which can be quickly swapped with the currently selected “page”.Also, in real life, each portal can be maximized to occupy half of the PCD instead of a quarter (at the moment this is not simulated as in reality it is mostly used for mission systems and we thought it was a waste of memory).

Many of the portals “pages” are assigned to mission-systems (sensors and weapons functionality) and therefore will be INOP in MSFS – although in many cases wer retained their real world appearance.Speaking of the portals appearance, we went through all the available videos showing the cockpit interfaces and we have completely redone the graphics of the old P3D version, so that the look is now much closer to the real deal.

In detail, these are the functions that are operational:

Into The Pit Demo Available Now

2 years 8 months ago

If you're curious about playing Into The Pit, the Doom-like, spellcasting roguelike announced during Xbox's Gamescom press event; a new limited-time demo has been made available on the Humble Store.

Into The Pit puts you in command of a mystic on the hunt for occult powers. When the player character's cousin, Luridia, discovers the titular pit in a village, she finds it full of demonic power, causing them to stop sending letters. It's up to the player to get to the bottom of what exactly happened.

Click here to watch embedded media

Judging by Into The Pit's trailer, developer Nullpointer Games is taking heavy inspiration from the Doom series – particularly the aggressive and fast-paced gameplay of Doom (2016) and its sequel, Doom Eternal. However, instead of guns, players dart around casting spells and various powers.

NBA 2K22 Is Hilariously Strange: A Visual Tour

2 years 8 months ago

NBA 2K22 is finally out in the wild, and it's a pretty decent basketball game, although it may not have the "wow factor" of previous entries. However, one of the highlights is the MyCareer mode where you play as MP, a YouTuber who turned heads with his basketball skills. He's now carving his own path to NBA stardom, which can include way more than basketball as you live out your career in 2K's The City. This living, breathing multiplayer hub lets players do everything from shopping for new clothing to playing in pick-up games and tournaments.

Anyone who has played the NBA 2K series will tell you that Visual Concepts has always had a sense of humor about the sport (Frequency Vibrations, anyone?), but this year, the dev team really took things to a silly and fun level in MyCareer. It makes for one of the strangest experiences. So much so, I knew I had to document some of my greatest (and most hilarious) moments as MP for your enjoyment.  So I humbly offer you a visual tour of how I spent my time in The City, building my career and path to stardom. I promise this is a game about basketball.

"New Version" of D&D Coming in 2024

2 years 8 months ago

The Dungeons & Dragons team has announced that the next iteration of the tabletop fantasy RPG will debut in 2024.

Revealed at D&D Celebration 2021, the next iteration of Dungeons & Dragons - though not officially named as D&D 6e - will launch with new versions of the core rulebooks to coincide with D&D's 50th anniversary. "Earlier this year, we began work on the next evolution of Dungeons & Dragons," said D&D's Executive Producer Ray Winninger during the "Future of D&D" panel, where they also outlined new sourcebooks focusing on both classic and brand new game settings (similar to this year's Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft or 2019's Ebberon: Rising from the Last War) coming in 2022 and '23.

Winninger says the new ruleset will still be compatible with Fifth Edition books and supplements, and will be largely designed based on community feedback for 5e. "We really really appreciate that feedback," Winninger said, continuing "we're doing our best to give you the version of the game that you really want.
