Halo Infinite's multiplayer reminds me of old Halo, and I mean that in the best way

2 years 7 months ago

I adored Halo 3 and Halo Reach's multiplayer. So much so, I never want to play them again. In my mind, I view them through a next-gen lens, coloured by nostalgia and post-homework energy. I know that if I jump into the Halo: The Master Chief Collection, I simply won't be able to recapture those heady times. I'm genuinely afraid of tarnishing those memories.

Halo 4 didn't do it for me, and I skipped Halo 5 altogether. They just felt off, you know? But having spent some time with Halo Infinite's tech preview this weekend, though, I'm hopeful that this is the Halo that recaptures those former glory days. It's a step backwards in the best possible way.

Echoes Of The Eye is sensational DLC for Outer Wilds - don’t let anyone spoil it for you

2 years 7 months ago

Echoes Of The Eye, the new expansion for Outer Wilds, is out... now! And I’d like to congratulate Mobius Digital and Annapurna on just how little promoting their promotional campaign did. The reveal trailer did anything but, showing us the familiar solar system of Outer Wilds, only with the beginning of an eclipse followed by shots of murky caves and forests. And take a look at the official screenshots used in this article: obscured to the point of ugliness. Here’s a team so determined to keep their secrets they’d rather present the game in an unflattering light. It was worth it.

The Weekspot podcast #055: eye and mighty

2 years 7 months ago

So, the main point of discussion on this week's podcast is the Outer Wilds: Echoes Of The Eye DLC. Talking about it is tricky, because saying pretty much anything about it feels spoiler-y. Christ, I'm trying to be careful writing this blurb in case I say something that I shouldn't. But, somehow, I think we managed to talk about it, without talking about it. Know what I mean?

Roblox players are making loads of Squid Game games

2 years 7 months ago

Squid Game is a South Korean survival drama show that's been taking Netflix by storm recently, and it's inspired a whole bunch of Squid Game games on Roblox. The show pits folks against each other in games like tug-of-war, where the winners earn cash, and the losers earn, well, death. It's a fun (read: somehow even more sinister) twist on the battle royale genre. It reminds me a bit of when the Hunger Games films inspired loads of Minecraft mods.

Amazon’s New World Is Proving a Mega Hit as Concurrent Players Exceed 700,000

2 years 7 months ago

Amazon Games has its first major hit following the launch of New World today. The MMORPG’s servers went live across the world earlier this morning and the numbers are incredibly impressive. At the time of writing, concurrent player numbers have exceeded 700,000, while Twitch viewership is nearing the million mark.

The numbers come by way of SteamDB, which are slowly creeping up with every minute. The official all-time high peaks across concurrent players and Twitch are so far 703,712 and 923,176 respectively.

To put that in perspective, that makes it the most popular game on Steam right now, with the venerable Counter-Strike: GO coming in at second place with 696,158 and DOTA 2 at 499,269. Of course, the question will be whether New World can hold onto its player base in the long term, but given that it is a content-rich premium game that Amazon has big plans to expand moving forward, it seems destined to continue as one of the world’s most played games for some time to come yet.

You can be sure that Twinfinite will be adding New World to its list of the most popular games of 2021 by concurrent players over the coming days. In the meantime, check out its launch trailer below for a glimpse of the action:

Netflix's Next Three Games Take Aim At the Casual Market

2 years 7 months ago

Netflix is continuing its foray into video games with three new titles aimed at casual audiences. However, most people around the world still can't try out the service.

As reported by TechCrunch, Netflix subscribers in Spain, Italy, and Poland can access three new games starting today: Shooting Hoops, Teeter Up, and Card Blast. Users in these regions can find the titles under a new 'Games' tab in the Netflix app, but only on Android devices.

Users will not have to pay extra to access games on Netflix. The games added today also won't include ads or in-app purchases, which is consistent with Netflix's previously detailed mobile game strategy.

This project is still in its experimental phase for Netflix. This summer, the streaming giant said, "We think the time is right to learn more about how our members value games.” For now, the company is focusing mostly on mobile games, as well as interactive shows in the vein of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.

Netflix previously launched an early version of this service in Poland to subscribers with an Android device. The library originally included Stranger Things: The Game and Stranger Things 3: The Game.

New World is Already Steam's Most Played Game of 2021 Despite Server Struggles

2 years 7 months ago

New World is already Steam's most-played game of 2021, even though it's only been out for a day.

Not only is Amazon Games' new MMO the most played game of 2021, but its all-time player count peak is also more than 200,000 players higher than Valheim’s, which previously held the record.

At the time of this writing, New World has 684,364 concurrent players and an all-time peak of 707,230, which it hit about half an hour ago. Valheim, which was released earlier this year to much acclaim, previously held the record as the most played game on Steam this year with an all-time peak of 502,387.

Over on Twitch, 947,000 viewers are watching New World streams. Perhaps those viewers are watching the game because it's really hard to play the game right now due to its ongoing launch day server stress. As noted by analyst Simon Carless on Twitter, about 400,000 players are waiting to log into the game's EU servers — that doesn't even take into account the players looking to jump into other regional servers.

A quick scroll through the New World subreddit reveals similar queue lengths, too. There, players are easing the server pain by making memes.

Xbox Insiders Can Now Try Cloud Gaming on Consoles

2 years 7 months ago

We already knew that Microsoft was planning to release its cloud gaming service onto Xbox Series X, Series S, and Xbox One this holiday season if you are subscribed to Game Pass Ultimate. Now, select Xbox Insiders can test the feature out on their Xbox consoles.

Starting today, Xbox Insiders with the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead rings will be able to access Xbox Cloud Gaming right from their Xbox hardware. The inclusion of Xbox Cloud Gaming on consoles will allow users the chance to play a game through the cloud before committing to taking up storage on their Xbox console to install a new game.

The move comes as part of the many steps Microsoft is taking to make Xbox games available on almost any device. Earlier this year, the company announced that it would extend the Xbox One lifespan by using Xbox Cloud Gaming to bring Series X/S titles to the eighth-generation console.

Catan 3D Review

2 years 7 months ago

Catan has been around for decades, spawning space-based sequels, Game of Thrones spinoffs, expansions, and more. If you call yourself an avid player of board games, there’s a good chance you’ve begged a friend in Catan to trade you some wool or lumber. Catan 3D is the latest iteration of this board game and it was seemingly designed with mega-fans in mind... although they’re going to need some deep pockets to play it.

Playing-wise, the game is simply Catan — there are no changes to the rules or differences in gameplay compared to a standard match of the classic game. The difference is in the physical pieces. The traditionally cardboard and plastic pieces have been turned into beautiful 3D, hand-painted terrain hexes, roads, settlements, cities, and more. However, its frankly absurd $300 price point makes it hard to recommend to anyone who isn’t an uber Catan enthusiast. And even then, a couple of strange design choices make the $300 price point questionable.

Catan 3D’s box feels like $300. It’s sturdy, clean and well-packaged, and all of the nearly 300 pieces and cards needed to play the game are safely secured. It takes time to unpack everything, and it takes just about as much time to properly store it all once you’re done playing. But with such a high price tag, I’m thankful for the extra care put into the storage of the game.

Xbox Games With Gold October 2021 Free Games Revealed

2 years 7 months ago

Feel that chill in the air? We must be entering October. That means a brand new line-up of Xbox Games With Gold titles that are available for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. Sure, Games With Gold isn't as prolific as Xbox Game Pass, but who can say no to free stuff?

Let’s look at the modern offerings first. Aaero puts you in the cockpit of high-speed vehicle to zip around techno-style environments to a licensed soundtrack while battling bosses and other enemies. On a similar note, Hover also takes place in a futuristic world where you control a gang of rebellious youths fighting against an oppressive government by parkouring around the world in a manner reminiscent of Jet Set Radio. You can play alone or with friends in online co-op.

You can't be Jeff Bezos in New World

Picture the scene. You're playing newly released coloniast theme park New World when who should walk over to you but Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The billionaire says that he's locked out of his bank accounts, but if you buy him several Amazon gift cards, he'll pay you back with "extra" once he gets his access back.

This situation probably can't happen, because "Jeff Bezos" and almost every variation of it aren't permitted names in Amazon's MMO.
