Astria Ascending review: peak tedium

2 years 8 months ago

On the face of it, Astria Ascending should be right up my street. With its lush visuals, intriguing character designs and often engaging turn-based battle system, this handsome hand drawn adventure could have been a surprise dark horse to rival recent JRPG greats such as Tales Of Arise and Bravely Default II. Colombian RPG Cris Tales managed it, so why not Astria Ascending?

French Canadian developers Artisan Studios have certainly tried hard to fulfill J part of this Japanese-inspired RPG, acquiring the talents of Final Fantasy XII composer Hitoshi Sakimoto and Final Fantasy X writer Kazushige Nojima to bolster their small team, but even these big name veterans can't salvage this game from the depths of its own tedium. Between its bewildering, colour-swap dungeons, cringeworthy voice acting and uneven focus on its large cast, Astria Ascending stumbles before it ever has the chance to soar.

How do you cook in Valheim? Valheim has never been short on food and recipes, but with the recent Hearth & Home update, the game's cooking system has been significantly expanded and overhauled. The buffs offered by some of the original foods have also been rebalanced, so read on for an up-to-date culinary guide to Valheim.

Diablo 2: Resurrected players still can't access some of their characters

2 years 8 months ago

Diablo 2: Resurrected launched last week, letting players dive into a remaster of Blizzard's hellish action-RPG. Alas, "hellish" seems appropriate in more ways than one, because players are still struggling with launch bugs. While the developers issued a number of fixes over the weekend, some players are still experiencing "lockout", meaning they can't play with certain characters because the game thinks they're already in use.

Marvel's Avengers Spider-Man DLC Will Have Story and Cutscenes

2 years 8 months ago

Crystal Dynamics, the developer behind Marvel's Avengers, has confirmed that the PlayStation-exclusive Spider-Man DLC will have story content and cutscenes when it makes its long-awaited debut.

As spotted by MP1ST, Crystal Dynamics' Senior Producer Dan Matlack responded to a fan's question on the official Marvel's Avengers Discord server that asked whether or not everyone's favourite webhead would come with his own storyline. "Spider-Man is what we call an 'event' so he will have cutscenes and a story for sure," Matlack replied.

Matlack then went on to give fans a further glimpse at details of the game's first ever Raid, in which players will battle with Klaw, the primary villain of the Marvel's Avengers' last expansion, War for Wakanda. As part of the discussion, Matlack reassured fans that while the Raid may feature some familiar environments it will be a "unique" experience.

Resident Evil 4 VR Hands-On Preview

2 years 8 months ago

Resident Evil 4 — like Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim and Grand Theft Auto 5 — is one of those all-time great games that has been re-released on nearly every platform. But the upcoming Resident Evil 4 VR for the Oculus Quest 2 might be the first time since 2005 that Capcom’s seminal survival horror game feels new again.

Resident Evil 4 VR isn’t some sampler running you through the best parts of the 2005 classic. This is the full game remade in virtual reality and you’ll be able to experience every area, puzzle, and boss fight in a new light. And I’ll be the first to tell you that this might be the first time in a long while that I’ve been excited to play through the entirety of Resident Evil 4 again.

Resident Evil 4 is best known for modernizing the Resident Evil formula and pivoting the series towards a more action-oriented direction. Gone were the slow-pace controls and sluggish gunplay, Resident Evil 4 introduced a new, faster third-person combat system while expanding the arsenal with new weapons and melee attacks.

All of this translates well in virtual reality. If you’ve played a first-person shooter in VR you’ll know that if there’s one genre VR excels at and potentially surpasses on the console experience, it’s a shooter. To this end, much of the original Resident Evil 4 experience has been remade to be interacted with.

Resident Evil 4 VR Release Date Announced

2 years 8 months ago

Resident Evil 4 VR will be released exclusively for Oculus Quest 2 on October 21, 2021.

Along with a new gameplay trailer, Oculus has announced its full VR remake of Capcom’s beloved survival-horror masterpiece will make the jump to virtual reality this October. IGN has a full hands-on preview of Resident Evil 4 VR you can read right now.

Without spoiling too much of the preview, Resident Evil 4 VR is a refreshing new take on the 2005 classic and makes the horror shooter feel practically new.

Resident Evil 4 VR supports both full-motion movement and teleportation travel. One of the biggest changes to RE4 in VR is how items are managed. You’ll now be able to draw your weapons and items directly from your virtual body, whether that’s reaching to your belt for a gun, or pulling a health item from your left shoulder.

Entire puzzles and other objects, like the typewriter you use to save, have been recreated in VR to be fully interactive as well.

When Resident Evil 4 was first released in 2005 it became an instant classic. Not only did it modernize the Resident Evil series, but many of the franchise’s newest games are directly inspired by Resident Evil 4 today.

Be sure to check out our hands-on preview of Resident Evil 4 VR or read our original Resident Evil 4 review.

Astria Ascending’s Beauty Is Only Skin-Deep

2 years 8 months ago

What would happen if a budding indie company, known for vibrant 2D JRPGs, partnered with esteemed Square Enix designers? We’re talking Kazushige Nojima (FFVII/Remake, FFVII), Hitoshi Sakimoto (FFXII, Vagrant Story), Hideo Minaba (FFVI, FFIX, FFXII), and Akihiko Yoshida (FFXII, Nier: Automata). You’d get Astria Ascending – a visual feast on the one hand and a smorgasbord of flavorless mechanics on the other. I spent several hours sampling the game’s assortment of features and was dissatisfied with the overall experience. Developer Artisan Studios’ sophomore effort (it also shipped Super Neptunia RPG in 2018) shows bouts of promise, but its stale story and gameplay left a bad taste in my mouth.

Astria Ascending mixes JRPG elements like skill trees and stat-boosting cosmetics with platforming navigation. A side-view camera suits the sparse controls; you’ll move along a horizontal plane, scaling platforms with the jump button or deactivating obstacles while roaming dungeons. I expect this level of simplicity in side-scrollers, but Astria Ascending’s explorable world lacks depth.

Metroid Dread looks like it could be the real deal

2 years 8 months ago

When you've been waiting some 15 years for a game, I think it's probably fair to express a little bit of trepidation going in. Metroid Dread was first conceived as a Nintendo DS sequel to Metroid Fusion, back at a time when not only had the series served up a 2D offering that could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Super Metroid, but we were also in the midst of the brilliance of the Prime series. Whatever your take on the likes of Metroid: Other M, Federation Force or Samus Returns, it's fair to say that the series has been far from its prime ever since.

You can forgive long-time Metroid fans going into the first original game since 2010's somewhat divisive Other M for having some nerves, then. But, after a couple of hours with the opening of Metroid Dread, I have wonderful news. This one looks set to be the real deal - a classic 2D Metroid, delivered with some serious production values and all the polish you'd hope for from a game that's helping launch Nintendo's latest Switch hardware, next month's OLED refresh.

Resident Evil 4 VR Launches Next Month For Oculus Quest

2 years 8 months ago

Oculus Studios and Amature Studio have today announced that a VR version of Capcom’s popular survival horror game Resident Evil 4 will launch exclusively for Oculus Quest 2 next month, Oct. 21. It is not compatible with the original Quest, and there is so far no mention of a port for any other VR platforms.

While we already knew the game was in development following its reveal at the Oculus Showcase back in April, today’s announcement trailer gives us a much better look at the changes to its gameplay, which have been revamped to work with VR. Unlike the original, RE4 VR is in first-person, and as you may notice below, you’re now able to shoot while on the move. Melee combat is also different now, with players able to physically slash at enemies using motion controls; other movements will be handled by a small analog stick on the Quest controller or via teleportation (depending on player preference).

Elsewhere, other more standard remake enhancements include better visuals, with new and improved textures helping to make the 2005 classic feel a little less dated. Other changes for the new version include additional narrative and world-building content, though we’re short of details on the specifics thus far.

Which Death Stranding Character Are You? Take the Quiz to Find Out

2 years 8 months ago

Released in 2019, Death Stranding marked the debut of Kojima Productions as a studio, as well as Hideo Kojima’s first game since his departure from Konami. It features Norman Reedus as the main protagonist, Sam, a deliveryman tasked with delivering packages in a post-apocalyptic America as he tries to reunite the country by linking them to a chiral network.

As you might expect from a Kojima game, Death Stranding is full of colorful characters with unique and distinct quirks and personality traits. In some cases, you might even say they’re less of an actual character and more of an embodiment of an ideology or concept. Either way, there are plenty of vibrant characters to meet during Sam’s journey, and if you’ve ever wondered if you were aligned with any of them, we’ve prepared a short personality quiz to help you figure that out.

Since the Director’s Cut has just been released, there’s no better time than the present to jump into our personality quiz to find out which Death Stranding character you’re most similar to.

Smashing ingredients in Potion Craft is better than meditation or yoga

2 years 8 months ago

Potion Craft came out in early access last week, and while I still think the economy and haggling bits need a little tweaking, I am really enjoying the methodical nature of being an alchemist. It's part art, part science, because you have to sort of feel your way around the potion map and fudge recipes with the ingredients you have. Your recipe book is limited, so I've started writing down extra recipes in real life, crossing things out and updating them as I find better combinations. It's just like being a real backwoods alchemist throwing twigs in a bucket!

But my favourite thing is the pestle and mortar. Smashing ingredients up (and grinding them into sludge) awakens their properties so they move further on your potion map, like how crushing mint will make for a livelier mojito. And I love it intensely.

Overwatch 2 will make murderbot Bastion more mobile

2 years 8 months ago

Rejoice! The absolute pain in the arse that is Bastion is getting a rework for Overwatch 2, and he'll no longer be able to heal himself or turn into a murderous tank. He will be a lot more mobile and have a sticky grenade however, so watch out for that. Over the weekend, Blizzard revealed the changes coming to both Bastion and Sombra in the sequel. While Sombra's tweaks are a little more minimal, it looks like Bastion's will make him play a whole lot differently. Importantly, he'll also wear one of Torbjorn's caps. Fashion.

Overwatch 2: Blizzard Reveals New Abilities For Bastion and Sombra

2 years 8 months ago

Activision Blizzard is currently facing serious ongoing allegations of harassment and mistreatment of marginalized workers. To learn more, please visit our timeline as well as our in-depth report on the subject.

Overwatch 2's Game Director Aaron Keller and Lead Hero Designer Geoff Goodman have revealed substantial character reworks for Bastion and Sombra that have been made for the upcoming sequel.

As well as sporting a charismatic new cap and slightly streamlined design, Bastion will see a number of changes in Overwatch 2 to make the battle automaton play rather differently.

"For starters, he no longer has his Self-Repair button at all. It's just gone," says Goodman. "Instead, he now has a brand-new ability that's bound to alternate fire. This ability fires a projectile that can bounce off of walls and stick to players, and does a ton of damage, has a really big radius, and is super fun to fire."

Nintendo Switch OLED: Hands-On Preview

2 years 8 months ago

I've spent a lot of money on Nintendo handheld updates over the years. From the GBA SP to the Nintendo 3DS XL, I've rarely been able to resist the allure of a brighter, more attractive screen. So when Nintendo announced the Switch OLED back, I immediately put in my pre-order despite privately worrying that it was a marginal update at best. Is it really worth dropping $350 on a new screen and a handful of other extras?

Fast-forward to September, and I'm feeling a better about my decision to pick up a Switch OLED. That's because I recently got a chance to go hands-on with Nintendo's updated handheld, and what I found was absolutely an improvement on my trusty launch unit, which has carried me through a couple thousand hours of Animal Crossing, Hades, and Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Is it still kind of a ridiculous splurge? Oh yes, definitely. But it's definitely more of an upgrade than I initially expected.

Metroid Dread: The Final Preview

2 years 8 months ago

If you want to know what makes Metroid so special after all these years, consider the opening moments of Super Metroid. After narrowly escaping an exploding space station, Samus Aran descends on Zebes to investigate the ruins of the pirate base she destroyed in the first game. It’s a perfect example of Super Metroid’s minimalist storytelling, wordlessly conveying the tense anxiety of exploring the ruins of Mother Brain’s old Tourian base amid rain and crashing thunder.

Such moments find Metroid at its best, effectively conveying the sense of fear and mystery that drives the series forward. Metroid Dread does its best to capture that feeling with its own opening, which once again finds Samus descending toward an unknown planet to investigate the mystery below.

It’s the opening moments that give me the most hope that Metroid Dread will live up to its famous namesake. While Metroid Dread doesn’t exactly sport AAA production values, its first few scenes manage to be beautiful in their own way, sparking that familiar feeling of tense curiosity endemic to the series. A wordless duel serves to establish the mood as Samus begins delving into the mysteries of Planet ZDR, which is swarming with aliens, robots, and maybe even Metroids (after all, what’s a Metroid game without Metroids).

Marvel's "What If...?" Gets An Amazing Action Figure Line From Hot Toys

2 years 8 months ago

Marvel's recent "What If...?" animated series on Disney+ is fast becoming a hit in the collectibles space. Following Funko's ongoing line of Pops, Hot Toys is making 1/6th scale action figures based on the popular show.

Hot Toys is focusing intently on the "What If... Captain Carter Were the First Avenger" episode, and will soon release three highly detailed figures from it.

First up is Captain Carter. This figure features 28-points of articulation, interchangeable dark brown hair sculptors, and a variety of hands that can be swapped out when you want Carter to look relaxed, ready for combat, or holding the shield, sword, or pistol. This sculpt stands at 29-centimeters in height. Now here's the bad news: Hot Toys won't be releasing it until the first or second quarter of 2023.

At that time, Carter can sit on your collectibles shelf next to the towering Hydra Stomper. This figure only has eight points of articulation, yet is 56-centimeters tall, and features LED lights for the eyes and arc reactor. The Hydra Stomper is sized to fit with the Steve Rogers figure. This version of rogers never received the Super-Soldier Serum.

Horizon Forbidden West’s Aloy Is More Dynamic And Life-Like Than Ever Before

2 years 8 months ago

I remember watching that extensive Horizon Forbidden West trailer that premiered during May’s Sony State of Play. There were a ton of new mechanics and equipment that made an appearance during Aloy’s intense neo-San Francisco trek. The sequel to Zero Dawn looks to be a next-gen visual milestone, and Guerrilla Games’ various designers – from director Ben McCaw to lead character artist Bastien Ramisse – have reiterated this goal. More importantly, Horizon Forbidden West’s heroine, Aloy, is back, and she’s more dynamic/life-like than ever before.

In a long-form post on the official PlayStation Blog, McCaw talked about Aloy’s journey from social/cultural outcast to legendary machine hunter as well as her new role in the upcoming game:
