Destiny: The Official Cookbook really understands Destiny

3 years 5 months ago

There was a place in Brighton a few years back that used to do a drink called London Fog. If you've never come across it, it's a sort of Earl Grey latte, really - tea with a lot of hot, foamy milk, and something else, some glittering flavour, that I struggled to identify. The place closed down just as I was getting into them, London Fogs. I looked up a range of unsatisfactory online recipes, and then bodged together a few London Fog concepts of my own, all of which were completely undrinkable in thrillingly different ways. Then I found this cookbook a few weeks ago - Destiny: The Official Cookbook. Page 171. London Fog. Honey and almond milk. It's good. Actually, it's great!

The London Fog is a favourite of Devrim Kay, who I once met in the European Dead Zone. I remember him crouched in the church, maybe in a sniper spot up in the tower, and I remember him talking about getting the kettle on once missions were done. He laid the Britishness on a bit thick, I had thought, and so does Destiny: The Official Cookbook in its own way. It's a quantities thing - after following the recipe I had enough London Fog to see me through a week. But a good egg, Devrim. It was nice to think about him again.

Alright everyone, I'm going to be brief this week as I wrote this edition of the Community Spotlight while promoting the site's Extra Life 2020 efforts this weekend. Just be aware, for those of you reading this AFTER Extra Life is over that you can still donate to the site's and community member's Extra Life pages until the end of the year, December 31st. Likewise, be aware that a lot of staff members and users will not be able to stream during November 7th and 8th and will need YOUR SUPPORT during the weeks after Extra Life ends! Finally, at the time of this writing, there were still 47 members of Giant Bomb's Extra Life team that still had not received their first donation and were still sitting at $0 raised! Please, from the bottom of my heart, consider donating $1 to $5 to these accounts.

Suda51’s Silver 2425 Announced for Nintendo Switch

3 years 5 months ago

During the Indie Live Expo aired today from Japan, Playism and Grasshopper Manufacture announced Silver 2425 for Nintendo Switch.

If the name doesn’t ring a bell, it’s the compilation of Goichi “Suda51” Suda’s The Silver Case and The 25th Ward: The Silver Case that was released in Japan for PS4 in 2018 (in the west, the two games launched separately).

Suda-san teased that he wanted to bring the games to the Switch back in March, and apparently he managed to make it happen.

Silver 2425 will release in Japan next year, on February 18, 2021. At the moment, a western release has not been announced. That being said, I would be surprised if it didn’t come considering that both games are already localized in English.

As an early purchase bonus, Playism will also include a manga with an unpublished scenario written by Suda51 himself.

We also get to see two screenshots below to get an idea of what the games look like.

SAGE paper says young people told to isolate due to coronavirus should get free gaming

3 years 5 months ago

Young people told to isolate due to coronavirus should be offered free gaming, a new SAGE paper has said.

The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) paper warns compliance with Covid-19 restrictions is "substantially lower and declining" among people aged 18 to 29 compared to older age groups due to a "lack of trust in government".

To combat this, the paper recommends young people who are asked to isolate or stay at home should be given "good financial and other support, e.g. free mobile phone data, streaming and gaming".

Review: Watch Dogs: Legion

3 years 5 months ago

"This video game is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to actual events or any real persons, living is purely coincidental. No organization or government agency has approved endorsed or authorized the use of their names or logos or product".

For some time now, Ubisoft has opened many of its titles with a disclaimer similar to the one above, often placed front and center each time the game in question loads. While a company wanting to "cover its back" is understandable, it gets harder to swallow said message with each release. Ubisoft is heavily invested in narratives concerning political upheaval, corrupt governments, class rebellion, and the breakdown of society. But the publisher's persistence in distancing itself from the topics it capitalizes on is getting long in the tooth.

Ubisoft's fiction is frequently embedded in recognizable real-world drama. The publisher openly linked Watch Dogs: Legion with Brexit before reiterating that Ubisoft games are "not political". The Division 2 featured war in the streets of Washington. 2018's Far Cry 5 was about doomsday preppers following a false idol, while the upcoming Far Cry 6 concerns a fascist dictatorship on an island off the shores of the United States.

There's nothing wrong with tackling socio-political subjects in any medium - creators can and should when the opportunity arises - but at least own your stake. Telling the audience that your wares "aren't political" doesn't wash when you set your latest adventure in "post-Brexit" Britain, open the story with terrorist attacks, feature dialogue referencing "fake news" and "social media conspiracies", and then add British xenophobia, a work-shy Prime Minister, and a crumbling NHS to the mix.

New Mass Effect Game in “Early Stages” of Development

3 years 5 months ago

Today, alongside the announcement of the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, BioWare revealed that a new chapter of the Mass Effect franchise is being worked on.

According to the announcement, “a veteran team has been hard at work envisioning the next chapter of the Mass Effect universe.”

That being said, the project is in its “early stages” and the developer is not ready to share more. That being said, they’re looking forward to “sharing their vision for where they’ll be going next.”

While the new game remains mysterious, BioWare shared the artwork you can see above, The file name appears to possibly indicate that the vehicle showcased may be named “Mud Skipper.”

It’ll certainly be interesting to see what this veteran team of developers has in store for the franchise, even if I wouldn’t expect further reveals any time soon.

The latest chapter of the Mass Effect franchise was Mass Effect Andromeda, released by BioWare and Electronic Arts in 2013 to mixed reception.

If you’re not familiar with it and you’re curious to read more, you can check out our review.

After Andromeda, BioWare pretty much went under the radar for anything related to Mass Effect while working on Anthem, while we recently saw a tease of the next Dragon Age.

BioWare are making a new Mass Effect

3 years 5 months ago

Concept art for the new Mass Effect showing four silhouetted characters on an alien planet.

Three years after Mass Effect: Andromeda failed to ignite a new sci-fi RPG saga, developers BioWare today announced they are working on “the next chapter of the Mass Effect universe.” Huh! Sure, everyone expected them to announce remasters of the original trilogy today (because chat about them has been leaking for months) but this was a surprise bonus. BioWare give no hints about the new Mass Effect’s plot, setting, or anything, simply saying they’re in the “early stages” of development. While I imagine it’s yonks away, I’m quite excited.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Officially Announced for Spring 2021

3 years 5 months ago

Happy N7 Day! BioWare has officially announced today that Mass Effect Legendary Edition will be coming in Spring 2021.

On the BioWare blog, the team explained they’ve been working hard for months to improve the three games in the Mass Effect series by updating textures, shaders, models, effects, and more. Their goal is to modernize the games, not to remake them completely.

They boast that the Legendary Edition will have “super-sharp resolution, faster framerates, and beautiful visual enhancements” to make the experience of playing the games even better than before.

The blog post goes on to explain that all of the single-player content and DLC from all three Mass Effect games will be included in the Legendary Edition. Also, promo weapons, armors, and packs will be included.

All of this will be specially optimized for 4k Ultra HD.
