When Riot Games debuted its augmented reality-fueled K-pop group K/DA to the world back in 2018, League of Legends fans were curious to say the least. Since the group's debut song Pop/Stars, the musical squad has been fairly quiet outside of a few staggering track releases, but now that their full EP is out? The world is theirs for the taking. But how does a not-so-non-fictional pop sensation take over the world beyond just the League of Legends community? We spoke with Riot Games to find out.

Speaking with Riot Music Lead Toa Dunn and Creative Director of LoL Marketing Patrick Morales, we learned a lot about the motivations behind taking on the music world in this fashion and where the next step should lead.

Johnny Depp Resigns From Grindelwald Role in Fantastic Beasts

3 years 5 months ago

Johnny Depp has resigned from his role of Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts, the actor announced in a statement on Instagram Friday.

The news of Depp stepping down from the Harry Potter prequel spin-off film series, which was first reported by Variety, comes four days after he lost his libel case against British tabloid newspaper The Sun over a 2018 article that accused him of domestic violence, calling him a wife-beater.

Here is Depp’s full statement.

“In light of recent events, I would like to make the following short statement.

Firstly, I’d like to thank everybody who has gifted me their support and loyalty.

I have been humbled and moved by your many messages of love and concern, particularly over the last few days.

Secondly, I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request.

Finally, I wish to say this.

The surreal judgment of the court in the U.K. will not change my fight to tell the truth and I confirm that I plan to appeal.

My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and career will not be defined by this moment in time.”

Codemasters In Talks With Take-Two Over Possible Sale

3 years 5 months ago

In a memo to investors, Codemasters confirmed that it's considering a potential sale to Take-Two Interactive, owner of Rockstar Games and 2K Games. Take-Two issued an acquisition proposal to Codemasters that values Codemasters at $973.48 million, a larger number than Codemasters' market cap value of $873.12 million.

The proposal isn't final--details can be amended--and is contingent upon completion of due diligence. If Take-Two goes through with a firm offer, Codemasters' Board has indicated it will unanimously recommend shareholders to accept the deal.

Take-Two also confirmed Codemasters announcement and issued a statement of its own. In it, Take-Two affirms the information laid out in Codemasters' initial memo.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure will no longer include online multiplayer at launch

3 years 5 months ago

LittleBigPlanet spin-off Sackboy: A Big Adventure will no longer include its previously announced online multiplayer when it launches on PlayStation 5 and PS4 later this month, and the functionality is now due to be added at a later date.

Writing in a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sackboy: A Big Adventure developer Sumo Digital said it had made the "difficult decision" to delay the game's multiplayer support as it needs "a little more time to get it right so you can enjoy it to the fullest with your friends and family".

As such, it now anticipates that the colourful 3D platformer's online functionality - which offers co-op play for up to four players - will arrive via a patch "by end of 2020". This update will also implement cross-generation multiplayer support between PS4 and PS5, alongside game transfers between the two consoles.

How To Move Your PSN Account To PS5 From PS4

3 years 5 months ago

With the PlayStation 5 just a few days away from launch, now is a good time to just take stock of your PlayStation Network account and be sure you know what is coming with you when you make the console transition. The good news is that you lose nothing when moving over your account, with Sony offering easy ways to do so, too.

Just sign in

Pretty much all your need to do on the PlayStation 5 to bring over your PSN account is log in. You can do this by entering your PSN username and password (and entering any two-factor authentication codes you should be using), or you can make use of Sony's recently revamped PlayStation app. Just download the app onto a smartphone or tablet, log in using your credentials and hit "Sign in on PS5". Your PS5 will provide you with a QR code that you can scan with the app to log you in instantly.

Don't create a new account for a new name

This might be obvious, but you don't need to create a new PSN account to change your Online ID. Doing so will lock you out of content stored on your existing PSN account, such as games and content purchases. Instead, you can edit your Online ID just like you can on PS4. Your first change will be free, but Sony will charge you for any changes thereafter.

Possible Mass Effect News Coming On N7 Day, BioWare Teases

3 years 5 months ago

N7 Day--the annual celebration of all things Mass Effect--is finally upon us, taking place on Saturday, November 7. And it seems developer BioWare is teasing some sort of news related to the critically acclaimed and massively popular sci-fi action-RPG franchise for tomorrow.

Apparently, Mass Effect fans should watch the BioWare blog on November 7 around 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET. BioWare hasn't publicly said anything as of yet, but the studio has been talking about N7 Day all over social media, teasing merchandise and table-top RPG livestreams.

It's unclear if the rumored Mass Effect Trilogy will be revealed tomorrow. With N7 Day celebrating all things Mass Effect, though, it's safe to assume it may at least be mentioned, especially since the original cast has plans to host a special panel during Saturday's festivities. In either case, the rumored bundle--which includes enhanced versions of all Mass Effect games except for Mass Effect: Andromeda--is allegedly coming sometime next year.

GameSpot After Dark Ep. 66: PS5 and Xbox Series X Discussioncast

3 years 5 months ago

Next-gen consoles are almost here so the embargoes are lifting. On this episode of GameSpot After Dark, Jake, Lucy, and Tamoor talk about their experiences so far with the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X. And Kurt was there too.

Actually, Kurt brings a refreshing perspective to proceedings as someone who is excited for the new consoles but has had limited exposure to them. What he has had a lot of exposure to, however, is Minecraft, an interesting indie game that not many people at all have heard of but is cool enough to potentially be a success. We'll see.

Kurt is also able to ask Jake, Lucy, and Tamoor what they think of the two new consoles, as well as Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales--all games that the trio have been enjoying over the last few weeks.

Review: Spider-Man: Miles Morales

3 years 5 months ago

Back in 2018, I talked about how much Spider-Man, as a character, meant to me.

It sounds hyperbolic, but fiction can absolutely get people through some tough times, especially if that character is particularly relatable. Okay, maybe not Spider-Man himself, but Peter Parker sure gets the job done.

The thing is, there are lots of different versions of Spider-Man that people can relate to. Now, we just got another one in Miles Morales and like the first time around, Insomniac did its job once again.

Where to Preorder iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 mini

3 years 5 months ago
The latest batch of Apple iPhone products are now available for preorder. With their 5G functionality and MagSafe accessories, the jump to iPhone 12 is somewhat more substantial of an upgrade than we've seen in the past few iterations.

Preorder Apple iPhone 12 Max Pro

Amazon has unlocked iPhone 12 Max Pro versions available for preorder right now in various configurations. Walmart, Apple and Best Buy's landing pages are for specific carriers and the prices vary depending on terms and conditions. [poilib element="commerceDeal" parameters="slug=apple-iphone-12-pro-max-preorders"]

Preorder Apple iPhone 12 Mini

Just like its bigger sibling, Amazon's offering unlocked iPhone 12 mini for preorder, and the other retailers have them linked to cellular carriers. [poilib element="commerceDeal" parameters="slug=apple-iphone-12-mini-preorders"] The new line of iPhones work with Apple's reincarnated MagSafe accessory line. If you remember those great charging connectors on older Apple MacBooks, the ones where you could trip on the cord and it would just fall out instead of destroying the cord, the connector and the computer, Apple's revived it for the iPhone. You can buy MagSafe chargers at Amazon and pretty much everywhere else right now, although Amazon won't have them in stock again until November 11 (you can still place an order, though). Beyond 5G and MagSafe, there are quite a few meaningful upgrades to make the newest iPhone better than its predecessors, including LiDAR integration, the ability to shoot RAW photos, and more. The iPhone 12 Max Pro and iPhone 12 mini release on November 13.

LoL's virtual girl group K/DA have an EP out

3 years 5 months ago

Members of the virtual girl group K/DA poser together.

The best thing League Of Legends has done in years is create a virtual girl group, who now have a whole EP out. After years of ha-ha-hilariously cheesy promotional songs like Warriors with Imagine Dragons, Riot’s music team unexpectedly hit the big time in 2018 with K/DA, a group with real singers in the digital bodies of pop-ified alternate reality versions of League characters. K/DA’s debut song, Pop/Stars was straight-up a banger, and found play far beyond esports stadiums. Today K/DA’s first EP, All Out, launched and I think it’s time Riot give up League to focus on pop.

Control's next-gen versions won't launch until 2021

3 years 5 months ago

There's more fuel on the fire of Remedy and 505 Games' Control: Ultimate Edition controversy. Originally, it was early adopters who were incensed that it'd require an entirely new Game of the Year-type edition of Control to access the upgraded versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X. Now it's the Ultimate Edition adopters' turn to be annoyed.

Remedy has revealed that Control's next-gen upgrades have been delayed until early 2021. Anyone who's itching to play the enhanced version on their shiny new consoles will be left waiting.

PlayStation 5 review: welcome to the next generation

3 years 5 months ago

This is it. After months of waiting, we're finally in possession of the realisation of Sony's vision for the next generation of console gaming. PlayStation 5 features cutting-edge AMD CPU and graphics technology combined with ultra-fast solid state storage, ground-breaking innovations in the user interface, a revolutionary controller and, of course, 3D audio. The promise is enticing and by and large, the end product delivers. We've only had just over a week with final hardware, but from my perspective, PlayStation 5 is a home run.

It starts with a press of the power button, eliciting the same ping as PS4 - but the similarity from one console generation to the next ends there. From a cold boot, PlayStation 5 is ready for use in less than 14 seconds (halve that if you're coming back from Rest Mode) and right off the bat, you're good to go. Yes, there's a system software update to download - but it's not mandatory and you're free to examine Sony's early UI if you want to. It's certainly a treat visually, rendering at native 4K with precision text, artwork and iconography. In many ways, I'm reminded of the utility of the PlayStation 4 front end and the pristine, high-end feel of the PS3's particle-heavy XMB. Sony's vision of delivering the next generation of gaming entertainment is perfectly encapsulated in a UI that feels futuristic and deluxe, and polished to the nth degree. The fact that everything is presented in high dynamic range adds to the quality of the presentation.

Bloober Team's dual-reality horror The Medium has been delayed until January

3 years 5 months ago

Layers of Fear and Observer developer Bloober Team has delayed its upcoming third-person psychological horror The Medium, which will now make its way to Xbox Series X/S and PC on 28th January next year, rather than its originally announced release date of 10th December.

The Medium casts players as the psychically gifted Marianne - a woman haunted by visions of a child's murder - who travels to an abandoned hotel resort in a bid to find answers to her years of torment. Its third-person, semi-fixed camera perspective is a first for Bloober, and is at least in part-inspired by legendary horror series Silent Hill, with the studio even calling on composer Akira Yamaoka to contribute to the soundtrack.

In a statement posted to Twitter, Bloober explained it had made the decision to delay The Medium's release "after careful thought and consideration". According to the developer, "it wasn't an easy choice to make", but ultimately felt like the right move given "the Covid-19 situation in Poland", as well as the "current schedule of other games on the market".

PS5 vs Xbox Series X: Which Does What Best

3 years 5 months ago

Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles are great. In fact, we gave each of them an 8 out of 10 in their respective reviews. But that doesn’t mean they’re identical. They both arrive at similar goals through different means, from form factor to storage to controllers and more. IGN editors Jonathon Dornbush (Podcast Beyond) and Ryan McCaffrey (Podcast Unlocked) took a look at six major categories to see which console does what the best.

Xbox Series X Exclusive The Medium Slips To A January Release

3 years 5 months ago

The Medium captured our attention with its dual-reality presentation, in which players can simultaneously navigate the real world and its spirit-world counterpart. The fact that it's a console exclusive on Xbox Series X/S and not a generation-straddling game like many launch-window titles only added to the anticipation. While it was originally set for a December 10 release, developer Bloober Team has announced that it's getting pushed back a month into early next year.

The Medium will now be arriving on Xbox Series X/S and PC on January 28, 2021. While the delay is disappointing, it's hard to argue with the reasons behind the decision. Bloober Team issued the following statement:

The delay also gets the game away from the blast radius of one of the year's most anticipated titles, too. Fellow Polish developer CD Projekt RED recently delayed Cyberpunk 2077 from a planned November 19 release to December 10. While Bloober Team doesn't call that newly packed date out in its statement, it's difficult to imagine that it wasn't at least a contributing factor in the decision.
