AMD RX 6800 and 6800 XT review: Big Navi means AMD is finally competitive

3 years 5 months ago

Welcome to the Red Team. That's the message that first greets you when you lift the lid on one of AMD's new Radeon 6000 series graphics cards, and it's fitting - after all, AMD's fans are some of the most die-hard in gaming, and these 'Big Navi' GPUs have been anticipated with almost messianic fervour by the community at large. Thankfully, all of that positive, memeable energy has found a worthy target in the RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT, two of the strongest creations by AMD's Radeon graphics team in some time.

Before we discuss how well these cards perform in a wide selection of games - and don't worry, there will be plenty of that - let's briefly set some expectations. At $580 (£530) and $650 (£600), respectively, the RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT slot in above the $500 (£450) RTX 3070 and below the $700 (£650) RTX 3080. That suggests we'll see an RTX 3070-beating performance out of the RX 6800, while the RX 6800 will do well to draw with the higher-priced Nvidia card. More importantly, it also means that AMD is finally competing at the high end of the graphics market once again, something the company hasn't done since the ill-fated Radeon 7 almost two years ago - and something it hasn't done successfully for many more years than that.

AMD's Big Navi graphics cards are in short supply, but here's where you'll be able to pre-order the Radeon RX 6800 and 6800 XT in the UK and US once stock arrives.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity review - a hugely enjoyable, impressively authentic Zelda spin-off

3 years 5 months ago

Of all the musou spin-offs - Persona! Gundam! Fire Emblem! Was there a Birdo one or was that just another of my mundane dreams? - the most warmly received was surely 2014's Hyrule Warriors, a fulsome blend of Omega Force's overblown hack and slash adorned with all the baubles and trinkets of the Zelda universe. Its big trick was leaning into the authenticity, cramming as much fan service as possible into the Dynasty Warriors formula - so it makes sense that the follow-up doubles down on all that, to the point that Age of Calamity often feels nore like a legit new Zelda game than just another musou.

The set-up helps - taking place a century before Breath of the Wild, this is a prequel of sorts that gets to play with all the tools and toys introduced in Nintendo's 2017 masterpiece, and a bit more besides. Age of Calamity is a thing of some ingenious thrift - the kind of thinking essential in the global environment it was made in, no doubt - with assets lifted wholesale from Breath of the Wild, from character models to outfits to models to boss battles.

Locations are repurposed for Age of Calamity's sizable maps, delivering on the appetising premise of seeing the world of Hyrule before it was seized by disaster - a world more alive, and more populous, with thousands of invading enemies for you to mow down. You'll tear through minions that line the aquamarine walkways of Zora's Domain, scythe through armies lined up in formation outside the gates of Hyrule Castle, fight a Molduga and whole mobs of Gerudo out in the wastelands.

PlayStation boss dodges God of War: Ragnarok PS5 exclusivity question

3 years 5 months ago

A week after the PlayStation 5's release in the US and other regions, we're on the verge of finally seeing Sony's new console launch in the UK. As we enter the crossover period for console generations, questions are being asked about exactly which titles will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5 - and in the case of God of War: Ragnarok, Sony doesn't seem ready to give an answer.

In an interview this week with the Telegraph [paywall], PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan refused to confirm PlayStation 5 exclusivity for the God of War sequel, explaining he had "nothing to say about that today".

Games such as Astro's Playroom, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and the Demon's Souls remake have already been confirmed as PlayStation 5 exclusives (the former serves as a free PS5 tech demo for the DualSense, Ratchet & Clank most likely needs the PS5's fast loading to teleport players, while Demon's Souls was released as a PS5 launch title). But in the case of several major first-party titles such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy: A Big Adventure and Horizon: Forbidden West, Sony has confirmed the games will be cross-gen.

The Falconeer review - I love that we live in a world where there's a launch title like this

3 years 5 months ago

I love that we're living in a time where The Falconeer can be an Xbox Series X/S launch title. Here is a game made by one person - one! - standing alongside blockbusters like Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, and not looking out of place.

More than that, it shines. Check out the screenshots in this article. They're some of the most striking images I've taken in any game. It's a combination of simple elements coming together in a powerful way, and that's before you factor in movement. The pictures don't tell you how it feels to fly a giant falcon around a moody archipelago. They don't express the serenity of it, the peace and quiet up there in the clouds, wingtips carving an airstream as you glide silently above.

But what I really love is how singular it feels. There is an undiluted grand vision to the game, the kind that can only survive because it's hidden inside one head. A committee would probably have shortened it, focused it, honed it. And in some ways, The Falconeer would be stronger for it. But it wouldn't be as authentic. It would no longer be an intriguing kind of personal statement, and no longer feel like venturing into another person's mind.

Tesco is lowering Switch prices and more for Black Friday

3 years 5 months ago

With supermarkets battling it out for Black Friday Nintendo Switch sales, Tesco appears to have thrown its hat in the ring, with rumours abounding that it will be lowering the price of the Nintendo Switch Neon and Grey models to £229.

It's a serious discount for a highly-demanded console, though it won't be around long - from 24th November through Black Friday itself. Not only that, but there's already discounts on major games like FIFA 21 and Star Wars: Squadrons. The latest instalment of gaming's biggest football franchise is down to just £30, and the joy of X-Wing dogfighting could be yours for only £20.

We've laid out the links for both FIFA 21 and Star Wars Squadrons below, though right now there aren't any pages for the Switch itself, either because they'll be added when the deal goes live, or because the deal will be limited to in-store purchases. Either way, we'll be sure to update this page as we get more information closer to Black Friday itself.

Someone should make a game about: The Count of Monte Cristo

3 years 5 months ago

The Count of Monte Cristo is probably the greatest revenge story ever written.

I say that with complete and total sincerity - no hyperbole, no exaggeration. Penned by Alexander Dumas in 1844, it's a legendary saga of betrayal, adventure and intrigue that follows its protagonist for two decades across half of Europe. There's no other story like it, and probably never will be again.

A brief synopsis for those not in the know: our tale starts with Edmond Dantès, a young, good-hearted French sailor, being framed for treason by four men who all stand to gain something by his disappearance. Labelled unfairly as a traitor, poor Dantès is sent to the island prison of the Chateau d'If, left to rot in a cell barely bigger than himself. His only respite comes when he makes friends with the wise old Abbé Faria in the next cell along, and through him learns about science, history, culture, language, mathematics... and the location of a massive treasure trove that Faria had discovered shortly before his imprisonment, but never managed to get his hands on.

CD Projekt unveils card battler Gwent's free new Way of the Witcher expansion

3 years 5 months ago

Free-to-play Witcher-themed card battler Gwent is about to get a little Witchier, courtesy of CD Projekt's new Way of the Witcher expansion, which launches on 8th December.

"In a world plagued by horrors and monstrosities, humanity desperately needed a new type of weapon to turn back the tide," scene-sets CD Projekt. "Created by ingenious Alzur, witchers - professional monster slayers of exceptional strength, speed, and agility - were tasked to end the threat once and for all...Some of them were destined to become the legendary heroes and protectors of humanity. Others the very thing they were supposed to fight...".

In more practical terms, Gwent's Way of the Witcher expansion introduces 70 new cards themed around the various Witcher schools - 10 specific to each of the game's six factions, plus a further 10 neutral cards for use across all factions.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales glitch transforming players into web-slinging wheelie bins

3 years 5 months ago

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is, I'm sure, great for all the right, normal reasons, but it's currently also great for some wrong ones too, thanks to a mysterious glitch that's transforming players into sentient crime-fighting wheelie bins, lamps, and more.

It's not entirely clear what's triggering the glitch at present, but players - as detailed exhaustively over at Polygon - have been delighting the internet by posting videos of their sudden transformation into web-slinging not-so-inanimate everyday objects to social media since Miles Morales' US launch last week.

The results are wonderfully absurd, with one player's surprise evolution into a wheelie bin made even more delightful by the ensuing video of that wheelie bin merrily web-slinging its way across the Manhattan skyline. Another can be seen engaged in a particularly visceral brawl, pitting villain against mildly irate home furniture.

CD Projekt shows off first footage of Cyberpunk 2077 running on consoles

3 years 5 months ago

Despite being a little under a month away from release, we've yet to see CD Projekt's enormously anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 running on anything other than PC, but that's finally now changed courtesy of new gameplay powered by Xbox Series X and Xbox One X.

CD Projekt's latest footage spans a diverse range of activities, showing off everything from in-car traversal across Cyberpunk 2077's striking rain-slicked city to quieter moments of interior exploration, alongside a few snippets of first-person combat.

Throughout the video, viewable below, the action cuts between current-gen, courtesy of Xbox One X, and next-gen, as represented by Microsoft's Xbox Series X. I'm certainly no Dave Foundry though, so I'll leave the technical analysis to the experts, but it's reassuring to see Xbox One X, while perhaps comparatively wobbly at times, still capturing the ambience delivered by its more powerful sibling - even if we didn't see much in the way of expansive exteriors on the console, and even if the gulf between the two versions is likely to widen substantially when CD Projekt launches its much-touted 'proper' next-gen update some time next year.

By completing the trials - described as "new types of puzzles set against the stunning backdrop of the home of the Greek Gods, Olympos" - Fenyx will finally be able to join the Inner Circle of the Pantheon, ready to challenge Zeus himself.

With 19 pieces in the whole collection, players can peruse through t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and even a unique varsity jacket in the classic Mushroom Kingdom colours. White and Red are consistent themes, albeit smoothed down a little so you're not as glaringly bright as a Toad's spotted head. There's also a real retro tone to the whole thing, with more images of old 2D Mario instead of the newer stuff.

Not only that, but those who buy two or more items of selected clothing will get a free gift: a choice of Super Mario mugs, with three options to pick from: black, white, and the same Red/White combo as much of the clothing.

The first option is useful if you're upgrading or replacing your console, while the second will be handy for anyone who started a character on one Switch who then later wanted to continue their character elsewhere, such as on their own console with their own island.

Mystery adventure Call of the Sea sets sail this December

3 years 5 months ago

Back in May - which feels oh so long ago - one of the games revealed in Microsoft's Xbox Series X stream was Call of the Sea, a mystery island adventure set in the 1930s that looked rather stunning. And it looks like the game's maiden voyage is just around the corner, as a Microsoft Store listing has revealed a release date of 8th December.

As detailed by the store listing, Call of the Sea is now available for digital pre-order and pre-download on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, with the game set to become playable on the 8th at midnight. It's available on Game Pass from launch, and will also release on PC.

Published by Raw Fury, this is the first game from Madrid-based studio Out of the Blue, and the vibrant art style combined with the 30s setting has definitely piqued my interest. The game follows the story of Norah, who sets out in search of her husband's missing expedition party, and finds herself on a mysterious island full of secrets from a lost civilization.

Adds Baby Yoda to Minecraft, Star Wars DLC does

3 years 5 months ago

Alright, we've already had one story about a blocky in-game Yoda this week, and I'm pleased to announce we can keep the ball rolling with another - as Microsoft has announced a new Star Wars DLC for Minecraft.

The new DLC introduces content from the original Star Wars trilogy and The Mandalorian, in the form of a new map, skin pack, bespoke texture set, mobs and item reskins, UI treatment and a licensed soundtrack. As you can see in the video, the map boasts 12 lovely dioramas for players to explore. Although some of the new face textures are a little less lovely, and will probably haunt my dreams for some time to come. At least Baby Yoda now has an official Minecraft model.

If all this sounds familiar, that's because Microsoft has released a Star Wars-themed Minecraft pack before: back in 2014 an Xbox-exclusive DLC added skin packs for both Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Microsoft wants Bethesda games to be "either first or better or best" on its platforms

3 years 5 months ago

Following Microsoft's $7.5bn acquisition of ZeniMax Media - the parent company of Bethesda, id Software, Arkane Studios, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks and more - back in September, many were eager to learn how competing platforms would be impacted. Now Xbox chief financial officer Tim Stuart has offered additional clues on Microsoft's future strategy, suggesting Bethesda's games will be "either first or better or best" on its platforms.

Speaking at the Jefferies Interactive Entertainment Virtual Conference (as transcribed by Seeking Alpha), Stuart offered assurances that Microsoft has no intention of "just pulling all of Bethesda content out of Sony or Nintendo or otherwise". Instead, he explained, "When we think about Bethesda, [we'll] continue to sell their games on the platforms that they exist today, and we'll determine what that looks over time and will change over time. I'm not making any announcements about exclusivity or something like that. But that model will change."

As to how that may change, Stuart suggested Microsoft would "want that content, in the long run, to be either first or better or best or pick your differentiated experience, on our platforms."

Microsoft says Xbox Series X/S shortages likely to continue well into next year

3 years 5 months ago

Xbox Series X/S' arrival last week marked Microsoft's biggest console launch ever, according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, and stock for both machines is, as you might imagine, currently in short supply - a situation that Xbox's chief financial officer Tim Stuart has now suggested will likely continue into April next year at the earliest.

In response to query a regarding Microsoft's plans to meet demand for Xbox Series X/S, Stuart - speaking at the Jefferies Interactive Entertainment Virtual Conference (as spotted by IGN and transcribed by Seeking Alpha) - admitted, "I think we'll continue to see supply shortages as we head into the post-holiday quarter, so Microsoft's Q3, calendar Q1."

However, Stuart predicts Microsoft's supply chain will be going "full speed heading into kind of the pre-summer months", and that the second quarter of the year - Microsoft's Q4, between April and June 2021 - would be when "the supply profile [begins meeting] the demand profile".

Demon's Souls on PlayStation 5 has a door that wasn't there before

3 years 5 months ago

From Software's seminal lore-'em-up has always been something of an enigma, but now it's got a whole new mystery to sling on the pile, courtesy of developer Bluepoint's razzle-dazzle PS5 remake, which introduces an imposing hidden door that definitely wasn't there before.

The door in question, one that was entirely absent in Demon's Souls original 2009 incarnation on PlayStation 3, can be found in World 1-3 via the Tower Knight Archstone, and lies in a shadowy corner of the Boletarian Palace. Or rather, just to really ramp up its enigma status, it lies up a flight of stairs behind an illusory wall obscured by a mountain of rubbish at the far end of an otherwise unremarkable palace corridor.

As yet, no-one has figured out a way to open the mystery door, but its secrets aren't entirely safe from prying eyes; following the door's discovery, one Reddit user, going by the name Cosmic-Vagabond, managed to use the PS5 remaster's new photo mode to to peer behind the door, revealing a moody balcony and, more pertinently, a strange glowing item on a pedestal.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince is off to dreamland in new Melody of Mystery DLC

3 years 5 months ago

Developer Frozenbyte is returning to last year's well-received Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince for six new stages of side-scrolling platform action, as part of its new Melody of Mystery story DLC, due on PC later this month, and consoles next spring.

Trine 4's three-strong band of heroes - Amadeus, Pontius, and Zoya - returns for Melody of Mystery, this time embarking on an adventure that sees the trio attempting to free the students of the Astral Academy, who've been ensnared in an enchanted slumber.

There's a "suspicious and mistakenly freed spirit" on the loose, according to Frozenbyte, and the ensuing adventure - which, as per the base game, can be played co-operatively or otherwise - will include new music and voice acting, upgraded abilities, and "fresh puzzles incorporating new elements like sheets of ice, torches, magnets, and crystals". Some of that gets and airing in the typically gorgeous teaser trailer below.

Take a look at Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order's "giant space Yoda"

3 years 5 months ago

A long year ago in a galaxy that feels far far removed from 2020, Respawn's single-player title Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order launched, and yesterday the game celebrated its first anniversary. To mark the occasion (and as a late entry to the Blocktober initiative, which encourages designers to share their blockmesh layouts), several Fallen Order designers took to Twitter to share their early work. And yes, that includes a giant space Yoda placeholder.

What does an AT-AT climbing scene look like when it's a prototype? Pretty weird, that's what, as you can see in the clip below. There's also footage of one of Respawn's absolute favourite mechanics - wall running - which similarly gives you an idea of what Fallen Order looks like underneath all its intragalactic trappings.

Another Respawn designer, Nicholas G Cameron, shared further images of some Fallen Order vistas in block form, including the crystal challenge that probably stumped you on Ilum.

Capcom employee info, game details exposed by severe ransomware attack

3 years 5 months ago

After revealing it was subject to a security breach at the beginning of November, Capcom has confirmed it's been the victim of a ransomware attack - and a pretty major one at that. Corporate information about Capcom's upcoming titles has already been leaked, but more worryingly, it seems a large amount of personal data has potentially been compromised.

In a press release earlier today, Capcom said it was the victim of a "customised ransomware attack" and confirmed that personal information had been compromised. So far the information verified to have been compromised included sales reports, financial information, and nine items of personal information from current and former employees. But Capcom is concerned that up to 350k items of personal information from customers, business partners, applicants and employees could also have been compromised: including names, addresses, phone numbers, birthdates, shareholder numbers and even employee photos.

Capcom can't be sure about the exact amount of potentially compromised data as some logs were lost in the attack, but it is certain no credit card information has been leaked. That's a sliver of good news, but plenty of customers and employees are now in the pretty terrifying position of wondering if their personal information has been made public - and Capcom has advised everyone potentially affected to "practice an abundance of caution, looking out for any suspicious packages received by mail or messages that could potentially be received".

Demon's Souls PlayStation 5 review - a cult classic reborn as a cinematic spectacle

3 years 5 months ago

What a difference 11 years can make. When it launched way back in 2009, FromSoftware's Demon's Souls was something of a whispered secret. Passed over by Sony for western release and subsequently picked up by a handful of adventurous importers, it was followed by word of mouth that soon escalated, and the chorus has been ringing out loudly ever since. It was nothing less than a phenomenon, and it's hard to argue there has been any series as impactful, influential or downright exquisite this past decade.

Five successors later, spiritual or otherwise (you can't accuse the ever industrious FromSoftware of slacking) we've perhaps the series' most high profile moment yet. No longer a cult curio, Demon's Souls is the jewel in the crown of the PlayStation 5's launch line-up, a dazzling, lavish remake of the original Soulsbourne at the forefront of Sony's new generation of hardware. FromSoftware's brand of hard-edged action has properly made it into the mainstream - even if the Japanese developer is not directly involved here at all.

Like 2018's Shadow of the Colossus before it, 2020's Demon's Souls sees masters of the remaster Bluepoint Games take on a beloved modern classic. It's not a remaster so much as a full-on remake from the ground up, though the fundamentals remain precisely the same - only here they're served by cutting edge visuals and all the special tricks the new generation of PlayStation hardware can muster. It's quite the thing.

Nintendo Switch consoles are going cheap in Asda for Black Friday

Update: Asda has just made this Nintendo Switch deal unavailable so either they've hit pause or run out of stock for now. In the meantime, you can keep track of all the other Switch Black Friday deals right here for any similar bargains.

Original story: Those in the UK looking for Black Friday deals on Nintendo Switch consoles have good news: Asda are selling Switches and Switch Lites for up to £40 off for the near future as part of their Rollback deal. This means that customers could buy the console and a game for the same price as just the console, or make a serious saving on Christmas and birthday presents for the end of the year.

So far Asda have not said whether the sale will last beyond Black Friday weekend, but we'd be very surprised if it did, so it's likely worth grabbing as soon as possible before the deal (and supplies) both run out. We've listed all the discounted options below, and we'll be sure to keep you updated if more information reveals itself.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla denies COD its usual UK physical chart top spot

Of course, there are some caveats. Valhalla launched alongside the Series X/S last Tuesday, whereas Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War arrived on Friday with three days fewer on sale. We're also comparing boxed numbers here, so the full picture may well be different with digital sales mixed in.

3 years 5 months ago

It may have just turned six years old, but 11 bit studios has dropped a "significant update" for This War of Mine on Nintendo Switch, as well as making the game available for free from now until tomorrow, 16th November, on PC via Steam.

If you like what you play, the Complete Edition is also temporarily reduced by 72 per cent on Steam.

This War of Mine: Complete Edition "wraps up" with the release of the two final story episodes on Nintendo Switch. Entitled The Last Broadcast and Fading Embers respectively, the developer says they "are more story-oriented than the base game", with both touching "on complicated dilemmas, as players step into the shoes of a lone radio-operator exploring the role of truth in a time of despair, and a young girl that must decide between the survival of a man or his cultural heritage".

After querying the change on the Ubisoft official forum, a Ubisoft support rep responded to say they were chasing it up with the team, but came back to the thread a short while after to report that missing achievements "was unintended", and the team was "actively working to enable achievements".

Yakuza producer would "like to get involved" in a Sonic the Hedgehog game

3 years 5 months ago

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio producer Daisuke Sato has hinted that he'd "like to get involved" with a Sonic the Hedgehog game "once at least" in his career.

In an interview celebrating 60 years of SEGA, Sato was asked what SEGA IP he would most like to get his hands on. It's not an easy question given the breadth of SEGA's back catalogue, but Sato went straight to the company's tentpole franchise and mascot - Sonic.

"It's an IP that I haven't come to before. In the sense that I want to try it... well, Sonic," Sato said (thanks, Tojo Dodo, via Nintendo Life). "After all, when you hear SEGA you think Sonic. I'd like to get involved once at least.
