Gabe Newell's gnome is blasting into space for charity early Friday morning in the UK

3 years 5 months ago

Earlier this month Valve's Gabe Newell announced he - alongside Weta Workshop and Rocket Lab - would be launching a garden gnome into space for charity, with $1 being donated for everyone that watches. And now the time has come to wave goodbye to Gnome Chompski, who is preparing for lift-off early tomorrow, 20th November, in the UK.

The whole affair is, of course, inspired by Half-Life 2: Episode 2's Little Rocket Man achievement - still one of the finest achievements ever created - which required players to carry an otherwise innocuous garden gnome from the start of the game to a rocket ship near its end. This is not, as anyone who's tried it will tell you, an easy task, thanks to the gnome's infuriating tendency to randomly launch out of Episode 2's open-top vehicles, courtesy of some exuberant physics.

Newell's recreation of Gnome Chompski's Episode 2 adventure thankfully skips to the end, and will see the iconic garden ornament - actually a 6-inch titanium recreation of Chompski created by Weta Workshop, in this instance - blast into space at 2.44pm NZT/1.44am in the UK on 20th November, which equates to 8.44pm EST on 19th November.

The Secret Door Of Demon's Souls Has Been Solved

3 years 5 months ago

Several days ago, the Souls community started diving deep into Bluepoint's PlayStation 5 Demon's Souls remake to find out what lay beyond a new hidden door. Nestled in 1-3, an illusory wall gave way to a door. A locked door. Today, Twitch streamer Distortion2 is believed to be the first to have unlocked the door and discovered what's beyond. It's a totally cool set of armor, the Penetrator's Armor set. The Penetrator is a boss in Demon's Souls and he has very stylish armor, so picking this up is for the most extreme Demon's Souls fashion experts, especially since it takes quite a bit of work to do it.

Annapurna confirms delays for Twelve Minutes, The Artful Escape, and Last Stop

3 years 5 months ago

Annapurna Interactive, the unnervingly reliable publisher behind the likes of Outer Wilds, Sayonara Wild Hearts, and What Remains of Edith Finch, has confirmed that three of its upcoming titles - Twelve Minutes, The Artful Escape, and Last Stop - will no longer release this year as originally planned, and are now scheduled to launch in 2021.

Twelve Minutes is the darkly atmospheric work of Luis Antonio (who made the art for The Witness) and tells the story of a man who finds himself trapped in a time loop following a violent home invasion, with players attempting to change the outcome of events. The PC and Xbox game also has an all-star cast including Daisy Ridley, Willem Dafoe, and James McAvoy.

As for The Artful Escape, it's a surreal rock opera platform adventure that charts the escapades of teenage guitar prodigy Francis Vendetti as he embarks on a cosmic journey to the psychedelic world of Glimmerdim in order to craft his stage persona. Music, unsurprisingly, plays a big part in the experience, and it's heading to Xbox One, PC, and Apple Arcade.

Marvel's Avengers takes a closer look at next hero Kate Bishop, due in December

3 years 5 months ago

Crystal Dynamics' video game spin on Marvel's Avengers might not have done the numbers publisher Square Enix was hoping for, but those players that did join the ride have a bunch of free content to look forward to in the coming months, starting on 8th December with the arrival of new hero Kate Bishop, who's now been given the full reveal treatment in a new video.

Kate Bishop, the other Hawkeye, joins Marvel's Avengers as part of its first season of post-launch content. This continues the base game's story in new chapters referred to as Operations, each forming part of a "interconnected narrative that unfolds and evolves" as new content is added, and each potentially adding new playable heroes, villains, biomes, and more.

The first of these story additions, Operation: Taking AIM, sees Kate Bishop - a "world-class archer and adept swordsman", voiced by Ashly Burch - searching for mentor Hawkeye (the Clint Barton version), in a journey that eventually leads to a conspiracy involving Nick Fury, time travel, and a new enemy known as the Super Adaptoid.

Cyberpunk 2077 Music DMCA Takedown Workaround And How It Works

3 years 5 months ago

We recently interviewed the team behind the incredible music of Cyberpunk 2077, but there's one aspect of the new sounds that has a lot of content creators worried. Twitch has been on a very controversial spiel with DMCA takedowns, purging years' worth of content for in-game sounds that honestly should be protected. For those curious about how streaming a game with so many tracks involved, here is how CD Projekt RED is handling the DMCA landscape.

As noted in our previous coverage way down at the bottom, CD Projekt RED has added a "streamer mode" that will disable the tracks that could qualify to be taken down by DMCA restrictions. This won't remove every track and there won't be any missing holes of sound either. While the affected tracks will be removed, each spot will be filled with a different (original) track that meets DMCA standards. With over 150 tracks available, there is more than enough to filter through in order to keep the immersion going without missing a beat.

The secret Demon's Souls door was unlocked and it's guarding a cool item set

3 years 5 months ago

After a new-to-the-remake secret door was found in Demon's Souls, the community scrambled to find answers that might lead to a key. We knew there was something juicy inside – players peeked through the wall using photo mode – and Bluepoint only added to the excitement by playfully calling out folks.

Today, after the recent discovery of a new Ceramic Coin item, the madmen did it. They got inside.

The process involves playing Demon's Souls on Fractured Mode, a new "mirror mode" Bluepoint created that flips the world. You can initiate the mode with the statue in the Nexus by spending 25,000 souls. From there, it's a matter of getting your World Tendency status to Pure Black and/or Pure White and scouring the land for Ceramic Coins in specific hidden locations, as summarized in this Reddit post.

These coins are a finite collectible per playthrough, and to get the key to the secret door, you'll need to accumulate 26 of them, so it'll take at least a couple of New Game+ runs with the same character. (They can't be given away to other players or duped, so don't even bother trying.) With a stockpile of 26 Ceramic Coins, you can then trade them all with Sparkly the Crow in the Shrine of Storms for the key.

New Cyberpunk 2077 Gameplay Is About Being An Outsider, Free Google Stadia Promo

3 years 5 months ago

We've got some new Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay to share, diving deeper into the world of Night City with more combat, more NPCs, and a hint at a much bigger story for our not-so-heroic protagonist. CD Projekt RED also detailed a partnership with Google to get a free Premiere Kit for Stadia.

The latest gameplay shows off more of the world, even more interactions with our beloved Jackie, and a few more adversaries around the way:

Click here to watch embedded media

Fast-paced action aside, CD Projekt RED also revealed a new incentive to try out Google Stadia for yourself. For a new promotion, Google is offering a free Stadia Premier kit for anyone that pre-orders Cyberpunk 2077 for that platform. This applies to pre-orders and anyone that buys it post-launch until December 17. As for how many Premiere Kits will be available, Google didn't say, only mentioning that this will be active "while supplies lasts."

For those that are intrigued by the incentive, you can redeem this promotion by creating a Stadia account (you don't need the paid version here). Once that account is created, you can then pre-order the game through the official Cyberpunk 2077 website to buy the title with that particular platform.

Cyberpunk 2077 gets new gameplay trailer as CD Projekt talks music, Keanu, and more

3 years 5 months ago

We're exactly three weeks away from the 10th December launch of Cyberpunk 2077 (fingers crossed), and CD Projekt has marked the occasion with a new five-minute gameplay trailer, as well as a look at its music, star performer, and more.

All of today's new information comes via CD Projekt's latest Night City Wire livestream, which was admittedly rather light on the juicy stuff compared to previous offerings. Keanu did, however, pop up to discuss his role as Johnny Silverhand (and to look dashing in a motion-capture ping-pong suit), and we got a brisk but informative delve into Cyberpunk's music - both its original score and soundtrack.

On the original score front, CD Projekt says it has around seven and a half hours of music in-game, all inspired by the likes of rave, industrial, and IDM to deliver some electronic "90s flair". Those eager to introduce their ears to Cyberpunk 2077's score can do so from today, courtesy of a 6-track EP which will be made available across a variety of streaming services.

Borderlands 3's new event guarantees Legendary drops

3 years 5 months ago

The critical path turns into the golden path for two lucrative weeks inside Borderlands 3. Gearbox has a new mini-event with plenty of incentive to run and rerun those story missions.

In the Borderlands 3 Golden Path Mini-Event, Gearbox guarantees Legendary items will drop as rewards for certain campaign missions. It's only the critical path stuff. No side missions or DLC get the same treatment.

During the most recent Borderlands 3 state of the game stream, Gearbox explains that the intent behind this event is for new players playing cooperatively on next-gen split-screen to get a quick start on loot. It'll be great for them, but it'll be great for everyone else too. No one's arguing with Legendaries.

The Golden Path Mini-Event runs November 19 until December 3. It should make the grind a little easier... until you start reaching new Mayhem levels and just have to regrind all the gear all over again anyway.

Kate Bishop Comes To Marvel's Avengers Next Month

3 years 5 months ago

Since its launch in August, additional information on all-new content for Marvel's Avengers has been scarce. Amidst promises of new characters and additional storylines, fans have largely been left in the dark about when Hawkeye, Black Panther, or any of the teased/announced post-launch characters would be arriving in the game. We now finally know that Kate Bishop will kick off the first season of post-launch content next month.

As one of the subsequent characters to take up the Hawkeye name after Clint Barton, Kate Bishop (voiced by Ashly Burch in Marvel's Avengers) is a masterful archer and swordswoman who, in the comics, is a member of the Young Avengers team. In Marvel's Avengers, she joins the team in an effort to travel through time and stop AIM from the next step in its plans following the main campaign story. The action-packed trailer shows off Kate's acrobatic abilities, new enemies, and some returning threats in Operation: Taking AIM.

Sitting Down With The Composers Behind Cyberpunk 2077's Soundtrack

3 years 5 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

A good soundtrack can make or break a gaming experience. Pairing the right sounds to the perfect scene is imperative, and setting the stage for what the player feels is an incredibly powerful — and sometimes daunting — task. With Cyberpunk 2077 just around the corner boasting some killer tunes, we sat down with the OST team to learn more about the inspiration behind the sounds of Night City.

Speaking with Marcin Przybyłowicz (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt), P.T. Adamczyk (Gwent: The Witcher Card Game), and Paul Leonard-Morgan (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II), we learned a ton about the tracklist for the highly anticipated action-RPG. While “cyberpunk” tropes may instantly bring to mind such scores as Blade Runner or Deus Ex, this talented team of composers drew inspiration from all sorts of sources, including draws from jazz, through downtempo, hip-hop, metal, industrial, to various incarnations of 90’s techno (rave, trance, etc.); putting an unexpected modernized spin to everything while still keeping a cinematic vibe that pushes and informs the narrative and action.

Ready to learn more about the sounds of Night City? Let's dive right in!

The Nioh 2 PS5 remaster loads fast as hell

3 years 5 months ago

One of my first takeaways with the Demon's Souls PS5 remake was how much less prickly the experience can be when load times are quick. That sentiment will also go for the PS5 remasters of Nioh and Nioh 2. When these games launch for PlayStation 5 on February 5, 2021, they'll be fast as hell.

Team Ninja shared a pair of gameplay clips that show how Nioh 2 handles load times on PS5.

GeForce Now's sneaky iOS Safari workaround available to try

3 years 5 months ago

GeForce Now has launched a beta version of its game-streaming service you can play on iPhone and iPad within Apple's Safari browser.

This option acts as a workaround to Apple's policy which forbids separate apps that stream their own games, and which has also blocked an iPhone launch for Microsoft's xCloud.

Apple has said it wants to ensure games people play on iPhone and iPad are released through its own App Store, which allows games to be rated and reviewed before launch, and also allows Apple to take its cut.

Elite Dangerous is free on the Epic Store this week and MudRunner is coming next

3 years 5 months ago

This week's Epic Games Store giveaway mixes the familiar with the new.

Until next Thursday, November 26, you can nab Elite Dangerous and The World Next Door. If you've always thought about trying your hand at exploring the vastness of space but you never found the right time – or should I say enough time – for Elite Dangerous, it's a good opp, especially if you're set up for VR flights. Frontier Developments is still supporting the game with ongoing expansion content, too.

I had never heard of The World Next Door, and I figure that goes for most of you. It's part visual novel, part action-puzzle-battler. Interesting combo! The plot centers on Jun, a teen trying to return home from a magical world "before time runs out," and there are dialog and relationship choices to fuss over.

I'm more excited about next week's pick-up, MudRunner, for its out-there factor. I'd never buy an all-terrain vehicle simulator, but I would absolutely check one out for free. I've heard good things.

While filling in the tags for this post, "Elite Beat Agents" popped up and I got real sad.

Among Us Teases New Map, Full Reveal Set For The Game Awards 2020

3 years 5 months ago

Among Us may have come out in 2018, but it didn't get its chance to shine until October of this year following the rapid success of Fall Guys (another jelly bean adventure) and the power of Twitch streamers. With a new lease on life, Among Us has a chance to spread its sus little wings and fly off into even more success, and that starts with a new map on the way.

Developer InnerSloth recently shared a first look at the new map over on the game's Twitter page, saying "don't show the imposters!" with the below sneak peek:

A full reveal will be dropping during this year's Game Awards hosted by Geoff Keighley. This new map will mark the game's fourth, adding a different layout for those suspicious little astronaut jelly beans to take on tasks and try not to die. This also gives imposters new hunting grounds to dominate.

While the above screenshot doesn't reveal a whole lot, it does look like a cockpit for a different space ship. Some in the comments thought it might be a boat, which we'll see for ourselves next month with the Game Awards.

Game Informer Live — Demon's Souls On PlayStation 5 The Final Chapter

3 years 5 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

Did you miss the last episode of our PlayStation 5 Demon's Souls playthrough? It's right here. In our last exciting chapter, we took on the Flamelurker, chipping off chunks of the mighty enraged creature with a flimsy mace. We also ventured up the mighty spires of Latria, its revamped and revisioned notions of gothic horror shining brightly under the moonlight. If that's not enough, we also took on a Dragon God, a Storm King, and even an Old Hero.  Old Hero found out that the Thief's Ring made us really quiet. We also took out some invaders and did battle with another player in the Old Monk fight to finish off Latria. Sure, we got destroyed a few times on Maneater, but that's authentic souls for ya. Live and uncut!

But now the journey is reaching its conclusion. In what may be our final episode of this epic Demon's Souls playthrough, we'll be traveling into the Valley of Defilement to take on a pile of garbage, try not to shed a tear during the game's soul-tugging sad encounter, and heading up the castle walls to do battle with the appropriately named Penetrator. After that, only a single foe stands between us and making a big decision for the world. Will we be triumphant? Will we flail about struggling with the final boss? You can find out today at 2 PM CT, as we head back to Boletaria for a big adventure. Join us!

Mario Kart Tour's newest update asks: Mario or Luigi?

3 years 5 months ago

The quiet feud between two of gaming's greatest siblings has built to a head. Nintendo's best brothers, Mario and Luigi, have now taken their fussin' and feudin' to the racetrack, and will be decided in the new "Mario vs. Luigi" tour, now live in mobile racer Mario Kart Tour.

The new update adds a new "Team Rally" mode, which asks players to party up as a part of Team Mario or Team Luigi. As racers whiz around various circuits, they will gather up special tokens for their chosen Team Captain, in a bid to prove who is the most Super of the Mario Bros. At the end of the rally, the winning team will be awarded with in-game items and an exclusive title screen, proudly emblazoned with the winning sibling's 'tasche.

World of Warcraft has had an endgame problem. Here's what Blizzard is doing to fix it in Shadowlands

3 years 5 months ago

Two expansions ago, with 2016's Legion, high-level and endgame World of Warcraft underwent a big change. Legion introduced Artifact weapons for each class specialisation that could be infinitely powered up and used to further customise each specialisation's playstyle. All told, it was a net positive, dovetailing well with some of the expansion's other innovations - such as the repeatable, rotating World Quests - to open long-term endgame progression to a wider variety of players than just the raiding hardcore. WOW became a game you could pleasurably grind away at and advance your character without feeling funnelled towards more and more challenging group content in the quest for elusive loot drops. (It became a lot more like Diablo in that respect - coincidentally or not, current WOW executive producer John Hight also served as the production director on Diablo 3's excellent console version and Reaper of Souls expansion.)

However, layered-on, limitless endgame progression systems of this sort come with problems. They can feel aimless or overwhelming, or both, and sometimes players can end up feeling more boxed in than liberated by them. That's what happened when Blizzard tried to build on the Artifact system in 2018's Battle for Azeroth. Its linked twin systems of Azerite armour pieces that can be powered up and Essences that grant new abilities felt fussy and overdeveloped, adding complication and huge grind without also adding anything particularly distinctive to your spec. The WOW community loves to complain about them.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon became an RPG after the April Fools' Day reaction, says Nagoshi

3 years 5 months ago

In an enlightening documentary video from Archipel, Yakuza series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi spoke about how the turn-based Yakuza: Like A Dragon was originally an action game. Now you might be thinking, "Yeah, sure. It started that way and before long they branched out to try something new."

But the way Nagoshi tells it, the shift was even wilder – it happened in the last year of production.

"After working on the six numbered titles, I had somehow reached a limit," he said. "As I was thinking of how to follow the events of Yakuza 6, I wasn't too confident on the margin of progress I could make."

"At first we said half-joking how about we make an RPG," Nagoshi recalled. "We released an April Fools' video. Many people were assuming that we were already making an RPG at that point. Actually, it was really something only made for April Fools' Day. It was still an action game at the time. From there, the video was positively received, we suddenly fully changed directions. We started making it an RPG."

"Hurrying to make things is sort of a characteristic of the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio," Nagoshi explained.

"Nobody said that it was too late to shift to an RPG, that it was impossible or that it wouldn't please the players," he said. "It was more coming up with ideas to make it happen. In my experience, when you have to stop a brainstorm because too many ideas are flowing, you're on the right direction."

Bethesda made a really good lore video to explain Fallout 76's Brotherhood of Steel

3 years 5 months ago

Strap in, you're about to get 500CCs of straight lore injected right into your veins.

Stitching together all the details of the Fallout universe wasn't particularly easy in vanilla Fallout 76. There were no NPCs, thus there was no one to tell you stories. It was a never-ending trail of holotapes and terminal entries, and you were left to mentally filter and retain all the important stuff. It wasn't very good storytelling.

Ahead of the free Steel Dawn update, Bethesda felt it pertinent to explain how and why the Brotherhood of Steel is in Appalachia. This eight-minute walkthrough covers Lt. Taggerdy's gang and their transition from the Army Rangers to the Brotherhood. It goes into their affiliations and struggles in West Virginia, ultimately culminating in Operation Touchdown in the glassed cavern (which is the Belly of the Beast mission where we see their fate firsthand).

It doesn't, however, really get into why this new wave of Brotherhood of Steel is making their way west from California to Appalachia. The video simply concludes by saying "Now, eight years later, the Brotherhood's First Expeditionary Force is on its way from their headquarters in New California to assess the situation, re-enforce, and re-establish contact between the two sides. Unknowingly heading into a very different Appalachia..."

The Mandalorian and the recent season of The Clone Wars are really resonating with people, in part due to the efforts of Dave Filoni: who should be the Kevin Feige executive equivalent for the property.

In the meantime, Disney is content with trying new stories and cashing in on nostalgiaTales from the Galaxy’s Edge tries a bit of both, but comes up short because of it.

On the ground at a lockdown PlayStation 5 launch

3 years 5 months ago

Tanked up on coffee and wrapped in a warm jacket, this morning I once again set forth into the wastelands of mid-lockdown Brighton for another episode of "what does a console launch look like in 2020". This time, it's the PlayStation 5 edition.

If you missed my prior escapades, last week I visited GAME's Brighton store to see exactly how the retailer was handling the launch of the Xbox Series X/S in the middle of England's Covid-19 lockdown. Game stores are classed as non-essential shops, meaning they're officially closed - but GAME has organised a click-and-collect system to allow customers to pick up their consoles on the day. For the Xbox launch I arrived at lunchtime, when things had really quietened down, so to catch some of the prospective PlayStation 5 owners as they were picking up their consoles, I set my alarm clock to arrive slightly before opening time at 8:30am.

GAME Brighton is located within Churchill Square Shopping Centre, which normally opens at 9am, but special arrangements had been made for the PlayStation 5 launch. Queue spots were marked out to remind customers to keep a distance of 2m from one another, and a security guard was on duty to ensure a timely opening... and hand out the occasional elbow-bump.

The list of PS5 non-backward compatible games just got a little smaller

Will Cyberpunk 2077 be the most screenshottable game ever?

3 years 5 months ago

I had one recurring takeaway during this five-minute Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay trailer, even though it's something that has been at the forefront of my mind ever since CD Projekt Red's fantastic showing at E3 2018. Hell, I'm sure you've been thinking it all along too. "Fuck, this game looks so unique and beautiful."

Every three-or-so seconds, the trailer cuts to a new scene in Night City, and it's almost always a visual feast. The art and design just seems so immaculate. It's a city that you're going to want to constantly photograph. Cyberpunk 2077 will have a photo mode, hopefully it's a robust one. Some people are going to forget to play this game in favor of capturing it.

The other thought that crossed my mind is "How are we going to end up in all of these situations?" The trailer shows so many different settings and scenes that it seems impossible to experience them all. It's so diverse that it almost looks like the content is endless even though we know it isn't. Like, how do we get to a talk show where a double-amputee gets bionic arms? I just can't imagine a scenario where there's a pause from all the gang-busting and corpo-infiltration to go watch The Ellen Show 2077.

Rollercoaster riding, skinny dipping, punk rocking, blowing up Terminators in the desert, Keanuing -- it's all a part of the Cyberpunk 2077 experience. At some point, you'll find time to smuggle this brainchip and topple capitalism, or whatever's going on here.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp might be worth reinstalling now that it has AR capabilities

3 years 5 months ago

I uninstalled Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp from my phone well before New Horizons hit the Switch, and I really haven't seen any reason to go back to it. It's still the cute game I remember from when it launched, but it's shackled to fortune cookies and a subscription service I just don't want to deal with.

If anything, I was good and ready to forget all about the app until I found out today Nintendo has added AR functionality to it. That...might be enough to change my mind. As you can see in the trailer below, the new AR feature will allow players to bring their favorite campers into our world, and we'll be able to go into Pocket Camp to visit our friends in our cabins.
