Mass Effect Legendary Edition Is On Sale For N7 Day

2 years 7 months ago

For N7 Day--an unofficial holiday that takes place on November 7 in celebration of the Mass Effect franchise--BioWare has revealed a slew of Mass Effect-related announcements. Of note, Mass Effect Legendary Edition is on sale.

If you haven't yet tried the trilogy that started it all, you can pick up Mass Effect Legendary Edition for PC at a discount on the Microsoft Store, Steam, and Origin. The remastered collection of Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 will only be discounted for a limited time so act fast if you're interested.

If you're on the fence about whether to pick up the remastered collection, check out our Mass Effect Legendary Edition review, which states, "Mass Effect: Legendary Edition remasters BioWare's space opera RPG trilogy for the new generation of consoles, enhancing the visuals, implementing quality of life improvements, and making welcome adjustments to certain content for all three games. In those adjustments, Legendary Edition occasionally draws unwanted attention to parts of the trilogy that haven't aged gracefully, but as a whole, this remaster is a good way to see what all the fuss is about if you missed out on the first three Mass Effect games the first time around, or are just looking for a reason to dive into them again."

Gears of War's Heroes Are At Once Tools And Victims of Fascism

2 years 7 months ago

Outside, shrapnel slams into stone walls and bodies crunch into the cold comfort of cover as tracer fire explodes over the heads of soldiers. Inside, there is relative peace. Statues of old heroes stand, worn and decayed, but still erect. Stained glass windows are shattered, scattering diffused light across the domed structure. At once, the sounds of battle end. Footsteps crunch closer to this forgotten building. In the center of these ruins is a table, dented with shrapnel, overgrown with vines. Beaten into its surface are the words:

Order. Diligence. Purity. Labor.

Gears of War is the story of fascist empire in decay. While the game's opening cutscene gestures at a time of peace, it must have been a brief one. A scant few years after destructive resource wars ravaged the planet Sera, the Locust--think orcs with guns--arose from the earth. Somehow undetected, the Locust brought the human Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) to the brink of extinction. Gears of War starts around 13 years after this conflict began. Freed from prison, former sergeant Marcus Fenix and his old friend Dom Santiago attempt to find the superweapon that might end the war. To do this, they drag themselves through ever deeper layers of hell until they succeed, but only briefly. The war they sought to end will continue. Gears of War is thus lean and oppressive. Exposition is stripped to the bone, as Marcus and crew fall into set-piece after set-piece, always surviving by the skin of their teeth.

A bar in Shenmue

2 years 7 months ago

I can't even remember when I began to seriously become interested in playing Shenmue, a divisive and unusual game from Sega. It must have been close to a decade ago, though. I learned that it was a game that combined martial arts, narrative, roleplaying elements, a serious but not too gritty tone, and a real world setting - a perfect premise for my tastes.

The problem, as it so often is with videogames, is that it wasn't exactly convenient to obtain and play. It had only ever been released on the Dreamcast, an old console from an old (but wonderful) era for the medium. I had yet to understand that nothing was a given, so I decided to wait for the game to come to a modern console. While the years passed, I watched the fans and their communities, and was struck by the passion they had for the series - it was intensely special to them. Years after the rest of the gaming community had given up on Shenmue, these fans continued to hope for and speculate about an announcement of a new game in the series. Their wish came true in 2015, with the creator of the series Yu Suzuki announcing a Kickstarter for the third entry. Meanwhile, my own wish was fulfilled in 2018 - remasters of the original games, released for modern systems.

Shin Megami Tensei V for Nintendo Switch Reveals Alice In 200th Demon Trailer

2 years 7 months ago

Atlus released another of its trailers showcasing one of the over 200 demons of its upcoming JRPG Shin Megami Tensei V.

This is actually a special one because it’s the 200th. If a few months ago someone told me I’d be reporting about over 200 trailers at the pace of one and then two a day (without even counting the additional videos not related to demons) I’d have thought you were pulling my leg. And yet, here we are.

This time around we get to see the gameplay of Alice, apparently inspired by the character created by Lewis Carroll. She debuted in the series with Shin Megami Tensei in 1992.

You can watch her in action below.

D&D: Icons of the Realms Tabletop Miniatures (2021 Series) Review Impressions

2 years 7 months ago

While the return to in-person TRPG sessions may be taking longer than many of us would like, there are still plenty of great accessories being produced for both Dungeon/Game Masters and the players at their table. If your group uses miniatures, odds are you’ve at least eyeballed some of the pre-painted figures available, in lieu of spending the considerable time and effort it takes to assemble and paint custom minis.

If your table plays D&D, this would be WizKids’ Icons of the Realms series - a collection inspired by adventures and stories set in the default Forgotten Realms setting. The sets aren’t limited to just FR games, of course, as plenty of monsters appear in other official realms and the only real limit of these creatures and characters is your own imagination.

That said, there’s a lot to consider when weighing the decision to invest in a collection of tabletop miniatures, and while the WizKids series mostly delivers on many fronts, there are also some drawbacks to taking the pre-painted path.

Overall Impressions (so far)

WizKids’ Icons of the Realms pre-painted D&D minis are a great option for players who may not have the time or desire to paint miniatures for themselves but still want to use them at their table. The 2021 sets include some of the most detailed models to date, though there are definitely some that will be more useful to invest in if you’re playing one of the official adventure modules rather than building a general collection of minis.
