Call of Duty: Vanguard's MVP voting system gives me a reason to stick around after a match

2 years 7 months ago

Call of Duty: Vanguard is out in the wild and fans are having their say about the game's multiplayer.

It seems to be going down relatively well - I haven't come across an outright dud of a map yet, and the action is fast, lethal and, when played with the Blitz combat pacing, all out chaos. Check out Eurogamer's Call of Duty: Vanguard review to find out what we thought.

How well does Guardians of the Galaxy hold up on last-gen consoles?

2 years 7 months ago

Guardians of the Galaxy left a great impression after our tests on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The game itself is simply terrific and genuine highlight of 2021 - but equally obvious is that the Dawn Engine is demanding on console hardware. All of which raises the question: just how do the last-gen machines cope with the game? In a world where PS5 and Series X struggle to maintain 1080p60 in performance mode, can any PS4 or Xbox One machine deliver a good experience?

Obviously, there are going to changes from the current-gen console experience - so the option to choose between a 30fps quality mode and a 60fps performance alternative is off the table. It's 30fps and that's your lot, similar to Xbox Series S. Reducing resolution as well as frame-rate is another obvious way that Guardians of the Galaxy can scale: so, the base PS4 renders with a dynamic resolution range of around 900p to 972p, while Xbox One drops down to 720p (DRS is a possibility here but all counts came in at 720p, curiously). Owing to the temporal anti-aliasing in play, the lower the resolution goes, the less distinct the picture is but it's still a good-looking game: only hair and fur elements genuinely suffer.

Exploring The History And Lore Of Metroid Fusion | Video Gameography

2 years 7 months ago

The first season of Game Informer's Video Gameography explores the history of the Metroid series. This week we're tackling Samus' acclaimed Game Boy Advance outing, Metroid Fusion.

Metroid Fusion launched on November 17, 2002 – the same day as Metroid Prime. Developed by Nintendo R&D1, it stars Samus as she explores a space station overrun by shapeshifting parasites called X. Worst of all, Samus is hunted by an X parasite that has mimicked her appearance and abilities: the SA-X. Metroid Fusion served as a return to the 2D gameplay of Super Metroid with modern improvements such as faster movement and traversal and a ledge grab. Fusion was critically acclaimed as one of the best GBA games ever made; some fans even consider it a rival to Super Metroid as the best entry in the series. Chronologically, Fusion served as the final chapter in the Metroid saga for decades until 2021's Metroid Dread.

Join hosts Ben Reeves (@BenjaminReeves), Marcus Stewart (@MarcusStewart7), and special guest Digital Eclipse editorial director Chris Kohler (@kobunheat) as we explore Metroid Fusion's lore, development history, and lasting impact.

Fairy Tail Creator Looking for Developers To Make a New Game From His Manga (And Will Pay For It)

2 years 7 months ago

Today Kodansha Creators’ Lab and Hiro Mashima had a special announcement to share during the Indie Live Expo Winter 2021.

You may know Hiro Mashima as the creator of super-successful manga like Fairy Tail and the recent Edens Zero.

Game developers are invited to apply with Kodansha Creators’ Lab with ideas for a new Fairy Tail game which can be published on platforms like Steam, iOS, or Android.

The winner, selected by Mashima-sensei himself and a panel from Kodansha, will be supported with a grant of 15 million yen (approximately $132,000) to create the game.

10 million of that money will be paid out of pocket by Mashima-sensei himself, while the rest will be provided by Kodansha.

The publisher will also take care of support, marketing, and distribution of the game. Profit earned by the game will be shared with the developers as well.

The application period is between December 1, 2021 and January 17. The plan involves the completion of the game in about a year.

Any genre is fine, and it doesn’t matter how big or small the game is, as long as it’s a good game. It’s also viable to convert an already announced project into a Fairy Tail game and submit that.

The announcement also mentions that a game that can be enjoyed worldwide is a preferable trait.

In February 22 the design documents will be reviewed. In early March interviews will be conducted. In late March 2022, the contract will be drawn. In April 2022, the winner will be confirmed and the contract will be signed.

Guns Undarkness By Persona 5 Composer Shoji Meguro Revealed With Art by Ilya Kuvshinov

2 years 7 months ago

Today, during the Indie Live Expo Winter 2021 Kodansha Creators’ Lab and Shoji Meguro presented a brand new game titled Guns Undarkness.

You may know Shoji Meguro as one Atlus’ most prolific composers, having worked on various Persona games including 5, the Shin Megami Tensei series, Catherine, and more. He recently left Atlus (even if he’ll still work for them as a freelancer) to pursue a new adventure as an indie developer.

Guns Undarkness is the first result of that adventure, supported by Kodansha Creators’ Lab.

Meguro-san isn’t the only well-known developer involved in the game, as it’ll feature character design by Russian artist Ilya Kuvshinov, known for his work on the Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 anime.

The game is coming for PC via Steam and it’s defined as a “Stealth RPG.”

You can check it out below alongside an official description.

Arcade racers are having another moment, led by an authentic take on 90s F1

2 years 7 months ago

For a short while I had a very specific obsession with early 90s F1 console games - partly because it's often acknowledged as a golden age of the sport and partly because there were so damn many of the things at the time. Super Monaco GP! Satoru Nakajima F1 Hero! Super F1 Circus! Nigel Mansell's World Championship! Of the vast glut of them that crowded shelves back then it was always Exhaust Heat that was something of a favourite, its Mode 7-powered take on the 1992 season surprisingly authentic (plus I'll never forget the car journey home from a Slough shopping centre clutching the box in the back seat, the passing street lights occasionally illuminating the glorious airbrushed cover art).

It's one of the first comparison points that comes to mind when playing Horizon Chase Turbo's outstanding Ayrton Senna expansion. To call it an expansion is a bit of a disservice, really - this takes on the 1991 season with some authenticity, featuring recognisable tracks as well as recognisable takes on iconic liveries like Minardi's black and yellow or the aquamarine blue of March, but it takes on Senna's debut season at Toleman, his short but glorious tenure at Team Lotus as well as his breakout championship year in 1988. There is a lot of video game here, and the detail within is - to an old F1 head old enough to have been to Silverstone to see Senna in his 90s prime - absolute manna.

Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker Expansion Delayed By Two Weeks, Launch Trailer Released

2 years 7 months ago

Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker has been delayed by two weeks and will now be released on December 7, 2021. To help with the wait, the team also released the expansion's launch trailer.

The news was announced by FF14's producer and director Naoki Yoshida, who wrote a letter to the fans explaining the decision and apologizing for the delay.

"There are several reasons for the postponement, but as I’m the one overseeing all aspects of the title as the head of the project, the responsibility falls solely on me," Yoshida wrote. "Allow me to convey my sincerest apologies to our players, our Warriors of Light around the world who have been looking so forward to the release of Endwalker. I am truly sorry."

As we previously mentioned, Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker will now launch on December 7, while the expansion's early access period will begin on December 3. There will also be two scheduled patches - Patch 6.01 and 6.05 - that will be released on December 21, 2021, and January 4, 2022, respectively.

Yoshida continued to say that the "biggest factor behind the release date change was my own selfishness as the game’s director." It all stemmed, according to him, from trying to balance the roles of producer and director.

Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker Expansion Gets Epic & Emotional Launch Trailer

While the “Endwalker” expansion for Final Fantasy XIV isn’t going to launch when initially expected, Square Enix still released the launch trailer.

The trailer showcases both cutscenes and glimpses of gameplay, and it’s certainly epic and very emotional. The pairing of music and images is just perfect.

Having been playing the game since day 1 of 1.0, 11 years ago, you can bet that I teared up while watching this.

You can watch it (and likely tear up as well) below, both with English and Japanese voices depending on your preference.

Final Fantasy: XIV Endwalker Expansion Delayed by Two Weeks

2 years 7 months ago

Today Square Enix announced that the new expansion for Final Fantasy XIV titled “Endwalker” has been delayed.

At the beginning of the letter from the producer live broadcast that is going on right now, Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida announced that the expansion will be released on December 7, while early access will begin on December 3.

The previous release date was November 23, 2021, so the delay is only a couple of weeks.

Yoshida-san explained that Endwalker is one of the biggest expansions released by the team yet. While the development of content is on track, Yoshida-san mentioned that the expansion ties a lot of loose ends in terms of story, and many of them are very subtle.

The team has been checking all of these subtle elements to make sure that everything is in tip-top shape, and this has infringed into the QA time for the final master version.

Yoshida-san thinks that it’s important that the proper quality checks are done before the launch of the expansion, taking the time they need, so a decision has been taken as of last Friday to delay the expansion.

Clearly upset while making the announcement, Yoshida-san also mentioned that he feels really bad about this, , because this is the first time the team had to announce a delay.

We hear that two weeks will be enough because the content is complete and what’s missing is just testing, so there is no need for a larger delay.

We also get the schedule for the first two updates. The Pandaemonium raid will be launched on December 21 with patch 6.01. Its Savage mode, new Allagan Tomestones, and new gear will launch on January 4 with patch 6.05.
