2 years 5 months ago

Today marks 20 years since Microsoft entered the video game console market with the release of the original Xbox. And to commemorate the milestone, Microsoft announced a documentary mini-series focused on the history of the tech giant's first gaming console.

Power On: The Story of Xbox will release on December 13 and will consist of six parts focusing on the formation of the original Xbox and those involved in aiding Microsoft into entering the video game console market.

The documentary will show fans a behind-the-scenes look into the early days before the original Xbox was released on November 11, 2001. Microsoft notes the mini-series will be an "untold story of the people behind the box, glitches and all."

The announcement comes as part of Xbox's 20th anniversary celebration stream. Among other announcements that appeared today, Microsoft announced that more than 70 games released on the original Xbox or Xbox 360 are now backwards compatible, including Skate 2 and the Max Payne series.

Arcane X PUBG Crossover Events Brings Riot Games’ Animated Series to Mobile

2 years 5 months ago

Riot Games is making a big push to promote its animated series, Arcane, across its own franchises, such as Valorant, but it’s also partnering with other publishers to bring crossover events to games outside of its own portfolio. That includes PUBG Mobile; announced today, the game is getting an Arcane-themed event in tandem with its latest patch, Version 1.7 when it arrives on Nov. 17.

A press release sent to Twinfinite explains that with new playable characters, a mysterious story, unique gameplay, weapons and abilities, players will travel between Erangel, Piltover and Zaun as some of the show’s most well-known champions. The Version 1.7 update also brings new gameplay features, downed player carry system, new outfits, Cyber Week sales, and much more.

By selecting ‘themed mode’ when playing a Classic game on Erangel, players will find the huge and mysterious floating Mirror Island. Early in the game, Mirror Island can be explored by players for supplies. However, as the game continues, Mirror Island will activate and become extremely unstable. Players who come in contact with the Wind Wall will be transported to either Piltover or Zaun, two iconic cities from League of Legends.

Players who land on the activated Mirror Island will also be able to transform into the iconic champions Jinx, Vi, Jayce, or Caitlyn, and use unique weapons and skills to battle against other players. Defeated players return to Erangel in their original form.

Over 70 Original Xbox And Xbox 360 Games Are Now Backwards Compatible

2 years 5 months ago

Update 11/15/2021: The newest batch of Backwards Compatible games will also be the last. In the Xbox Wire post detailing these classic additions, Xbox compatibility program lead Peggy Lo wrote about ending the preservation service, stating the newly added 70+ games are the "latest and final addition." She goes on to describe the current hurdles for adding any other games to the back-compat list, saying, "While we continue to stay focused on preserving and enhancing the art form of games, we have reached the limit of our ability to bring new games to the catalog from the past due to licensing, legal and technical constraints."

Our Original Story:

Microsoft is making its first additions to the Xbox backward compatible lineup since the release of Xbox Series X/S. Over 70 games are newly playable on Xbox One and Series consoles, including 20+ titles from the original Xbox that turns 20 years old today.

Current generation Xbox owners can now enjoy the entire F.E.A.R., Skate, and Max Payne franchises on modern hardware, and several new additions and existing back-compat games are receiving an FPS Boost.

As you can see above, the story focuses on a young Sherlock Holmes at the beginning of his career who returns to his Mediterranean hometown in Cordona following his mother’s death, Violet. Sherlock Holmes Chapter One Review – A True Crime

2 years 5 months ago

Sherlock Holmes Chapter One on PC

When I first heard that Frogwares would be soft rebooting their Sherlock Holmes series, I was genuinely excited. While certainly not perfect, there was always a lot of potential in the investigative elements of their games that could have been excellent with a few slight tweaks. Unfortunately, the changes made in Sherlock Holmes Chapter One only make the series duller and unnecessarily tedious.

As the title indicates, Sherlock Holmes Chapter One serves as an origin story for the world’s greatest detective, following his adventures as an up-and-coming investigator. The narrative sees him return to his childhood home of Cordona, a small town located on an island in the Mediterranean, with his longtime friend, Jon.

It doesn’t take long to realize there is a sinister crime conspiracy lurking beneath the surface of this seemingly quaint town, and Sherlock and Jon are caught in the middle of it. The duo cannot even check into their hotel room before overhearing that a theft of a precious diamond has occurred at a seance.

Naturally inquisitive, Holmes investigates using clues and eyewitness testimony to try and track down what really happened. To do this successfully, there are a few different gameplay elements to get the hang of.

Sherlock Holmes Chapter One Review

2 years 5 months ago

Beyond any grisly homicide or nasty insurance fraud arson case, the biggest crime suffered by LA Noire fans was the shuttering of developer Team Bondi, since any prospect of a sequel has seemingly been snuffed out with it. The announcement of Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, a reboot of developer Frogwares’ long-running detective series that shifts its established sleuth-’em-up gameplay into an open-world, revived hope for a second coming of Cole Phelps and company, but I’m afraid those have been dashed as well. Chapter One’s underfeatured open world and uninspired combat prevent it from solving the case of the missing great detective game.

Chapter One sees the world’s second most famous detective (sorry, but Batman has a better marketing team) return to his childhood home on the fictional Mediterranean island of Cordona after he learns that there may have been more to the death of his mother than was initially reported. Sprawling in size and rich in period-accurate detail, Cordona gives the initial impression of an Assassin’s Creed-style sandbox in which you must solve the murders rather than inflict them, using Sherlock’s razor-sharp intellect in place of a hidden blade. However, a disappointing lack of interactivity means it’s not nearly as interesting to inhabit or as dense with discoveries as it first seems.

Today Square Enix released new artwork dedicated to the upcoming Endwalker expansion for Final Fantasy XIV.

The art showcases our arch-enemy Zenos yae Galvus in his new Reaper getup. He looks quite fearsome and awesome. Of course, from his point of view, he just wants to look good for us, so that he can be the best “friend” he can be.

Another illustration in a similar style was released a while ago, portraying Alphinaud.

Before Netflix Came Along, Xbox Game Pass Was Going to Be a Rental Service

2 years 5 months ago

Before the likes of Netflix and Spotify successfully adopted a model of streaming media content to users via a subscription-based service, Xbox Game Pass was set to begin life as a video game rental platform.

Speaking to British GQ, Microsoft's head of gaming ecosystems Sarah Bond explained that Xbox Game Pass may have originally looked rather different. The studio's decision to launch as a streaming-based subscription service came in part due to the successes seen by other companies using the model – turning a rental service codenamed Arches into the game subscription service we know as Game Pass.

It also helped the company to build into another phenomenon in the industry – the longer duration over which games were generating revenue. “Something like 75 percent of a game’s revenue used to be made in the first two months of release,” explains Bond. “Nowadays it’s spread over two years.” Game Pass allows the company to offer the games themselves at an attractive price point for players, while expansions or other post-launch transactions remain valuable.

Bond went on to reveal that the idea of a video game subscription service was initially met with strong resistance from publishers, who believed that Game Pass would devalue games. When Xbox initially launched Game Pass in June 2017, it launched with a number of low-risk older games that publishers had granted the studio access to in order to test how profitable the service would actually be.

OlliOlli Studio Roll7 Bought By Private Division

2 years 5 months ago

Private Division, the publishing subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, has acquired OlliOlli series developer Roll7.

As reported by MCV UK, the publishing label purchased the London-based developer for an undisclosed sum. Roll7 is currently working on its latest installment of the OlliOlli series, OlliOlli World, which is set to be published by Private Division this winter.

In a statement, Executive Vice President and Head of Private Division Michael Worosz spoke positively about the publisher's relationship with the BAFTA award-winning studio. “We’re thrilled to welcome Roll7 to the Private Division family,” said Worosz. “As a team passionate about action sports ourselves, seeing how Roll7 combines the thrill of competition with the zen of achieving flow-state in a videogame is remarkable, and we can’t wait to show the world this phenomenon with our release of OlliOlli World this winter.”

Private Division was initially set up by Take-Two to publish games from independent developers, and has previously brought out The Outer Worlds, Disintegration, Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey and more. It previously agreed a deal to publish new games not just from Roll7, but Moon Studios (Ori & the Blind Forest) and League of Geeks (Armello).

Grand Theft Auto 3: Definitive Edition - the good, the bad and the ugly

2 years 5 months ago

We had concerns about Rockstar's remastering of the PS2-era Grand Theft Auto Trilogy - worries that didn't abate when it was discovered that all three games would be drawing upon the flawed mobile ports, remasters shoehorned into Unreal Engine 4. We'll be looking at all three games in the pack, but we wanted to start with Grand Theft Auto 3. It's the oldest title in the line-up and we imagined that it would be the one with most to gain in the remastering process. Taking a step back from the controversy, it's fair to say that Grove Street Games' work is not without merit, but there are a lot of problems here - issues that are so blatant and jarring and ridiculous, it's hard to understand how the game made its way through quality control.

Let's start by talking about how the remaster compares to the original PlayStation 2 release - which we would imagine is the way that most console players coming to the Definitive Edition would have first experienced the game. In its original form, GTA3 on PlayStation 2 was built using RenderWare - a popular middleware solution from Criterion that was used in a huge range of games during that era, including all three GTA titles. Let's be clear here: GTA3 wasn't a visual masterpiece. Compared to contemporaries such as Metal Gear Solid 2 and Gran Turismo 3, it fares badly. However, it was ambitious, with a full time of day system, weather simulation and of course, 'open world'-style free-form exploration of Liberty City. Many of these concepts had existed in the original GTA games but this was the first time it could be experienced in full 3D and the resulting sense of freedom is precisely what made it unique and special in 2001.

Battlefield 2042's Early Launch Has Had Some Teething Problems

2 years 5 months ago

Battlefield 2042 isn't being fully released until this Friday, but many of those playing early haven't been pleased with the release version. Server issues, unexpected gunplay quirks, glitches, and UI design have been singled out for criticism by many in the community.

A cursory look at Reddit right now reveals headlines like "Do not buy Battlefield 2042", "Battlefield 2042 is completely unplayable", and "This game is a major step back for battlefield". Unfortunately for DICE, many of these posts are being written around completely different topics of complaint – we've listed some of players' most consistent problems below.

Server Problems

Battlefield launched last Friday as an EA Play trial, as well as offering the full version to those who've paid more for special editions or the EA Play Pro subscription. Unfortunately, many players found the new game to be unplayable because of an error when loading into servers, with Battlefield's support Twitter account acknowledging the issue. Almost a full day later, the account said the problem had been "significantly reduced", but many players reported requesting refunds within that time.

Episode 3 of The New Eurogamer Podcast now available to all

2 years 5 months ago

I spy with my little eye, someone beginning with M. You know him, you've read his work. He likes racing games. Warmer. His surname begins with R. Warmer. He's a writer here. Have you got it?

One thing the Eurogamer Podcast was really good at in the past was giving our writers a way to show themselves outside of the pieces they write for the site. I think this provided an opportunity for you to get to know us, beyond the words, as people. And I didn't want to lose that with the new incarnation of the Podcast, because it's nice to show you who we are and there aren't many opportunities for it.
