Brian Boru: High King of Ireland Board Game Review

2 years 2 months ago

Trick-taking is a central part of so many playing card games that most people are familiar with it. The lead player starts by playing a card and the highest card of that suit wins the hand. Yet it’s not used that widely in hobby games, perhaps because it’s so commonplace, despite the fact it would make games easier to learn.

Enter Brian Boru: High King of Ireland, a game named after a renowned king of medieval Ireland (see it on Amazon). It uses that comfortable trick-taking concept but builds on it in two distinct ways. First, it removes much of the randomness by having players draft cards instead of a random deal. Second, it has the outcome of tricks determine your control of towns on a map of Ireland. Between them, these innovations transform the humble trick into something very new and interesting.

What’s In The Box

Brian Boru comes in a big, shallow box in order to accommodate a large board with some tracks and a map of Ireland with major towns marked and linked by roads. It’s a beautiful thing, painted in gentle tones to suggest an ancient chart and decorated with knotwork and Celtic fonts.

Indeed the artwork across the game is high quality. You can see the same effect on the cards which are big, tarot-sized affairs depicting people, places and items relevant to the era in classic knotwork borders in addition to their in-game information.

Platinum Games Wants To Resurrect Scalebound

2 years 2 months ago

Scalebound was once one of the hottest Microsoft exclusives during the Xbox One’s early years. Developed by Platinum Games, the stylish action title combined Devil May Cry-style action and attitude with dragons. Despite the hype, the game was canceled in 2017 and has become one of gaming's curious “What if?” stories. Platinum's leadership is still interested in the idea, however, and wants to sit down with Microsoft to make it happen.

In an interview with IGN Japan, Platinum’s president and vice president, Atsushi Inaba and Hideki Kamiya, respectively, reflected on Scalebound’s cancellation. Inaba states that Kamiya, the game’s creator, talks about reviving Scalebound “all the time.” This isn’t just wishful thinking; the pair wants to have serious talks with Microsoft about revisiting the project.

“Both Kamiya and I are serious – we really would love to work on Scalebound again,” says Inaba. “I’d like to discuss it with Microsoft properly.” Kamiya added that Scalebound's development was far along when it got the ax and that it's "pointless" for Microsoft to let the IP languish.

“I’d like to appeal to Phil Spencer directly! Let’s do it, Phil!” says Kamiya.

PlatinumGames would love to resurrect Scalebound and "wants to discuss it with Microsoft properly"

2 years 2 months ago

There were sad faces all round when Microsoft announced Scalebound, its highly anticipated monster-bothering collaboration with Bayonetta developer PlatinumGames, had been cancelled, leaving fans of the studio to ponder what might have been if events had transpired differently. And it seems Platinum itself is still eager to see the project reach fruition, now saying it "wants to discuss [its resurrection] with Microsoft properly".

Scalebound first surfaced during Microsoft's E3 showcase back in 2014, promising to transport players to a hostile world where - in the role of a cocky teen with a massive sword - they'd take on enormous creatures, with a little help from their dragon pal.

Spider-Man, Uncharted Star Tom Holland’s Dream Video Game Movie Might Surprise You

2 years 2 months ago

Tom Holland Spider-Man Uncharted Jak and Daxter

Tom Holland is best known for taking on the role of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with Captain America: Civil War way back in 2016. Since then, he’s gone on to star as Spider-Man in multiple films, but for now, he’s put aside the web slingers and increased the amount of “craps” in his vocabulary to play Nathan Drake in Sony’s upcoming Uncharted movie.

In an interview for the Uncharted movie, Holland was asked by GameSpot what his dream video game adaptation is, and his response was … interesting, to say the least.

“I would like to make a Jak and Daxter movie, and I would play Jak, but I would make it at A24 so that it’s really weird and dark,” Holland said. “I would do a really weird live-action version of Jak and Daxter.”

This sounds great, as long as Toni Collette and Alex Wolff are on the cast list.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands: How Spells Matter as Much as the Guns – IGN First

2 years 2 months ago

Quick, what's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Borderlands? Is it guns? Well if you didn't think of guns, just play along with me please. My entire intro kind of hangs on it. Thanks. So Borderlands is famous for guns: billions of them, actually. Everything from guns that shoot acid bullets to guns that become grenades when empty. Much like the USA, the heart and soul of the Borderlands experience is built on a foundation of guns.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, which is an off-shoot of the Borderlands experience, is also brimming with guns, but there's something magical in the air, too. Literally, it's magic! Now that you've made it through this tortured opening, let's take a good, long look at how magic changes the Borderlands experience for the better.

Crusader Kings 3: Royal Court DLC Review

2 years 2 months ago

As I sit perched atop my throne and welcome another throng of unwashed petitioners to track mud across my brand-new Persian carpet, surely bringing with them all manner of trivial frustrations to waste my time, one thought sits at the front of my mind: where has this been all my life? Royal Court is the first major expansion for Crusader Kings 3, and between a full 3D throne room that puts you in the world, to the return of the inventory system from Crusader Kings 2, to wonderfully customizable cultures, everything feels like it was meant to be here all along.

While the base game of Crusader Kings 3 was already a masterpiece, it's remarkable how incomplete it would feel to go back to it after playing Royal Court. Some recent expansions to Paradox's older games, like Europa Universalis IV, have seemed like the devs are just looking for stuff to do at this point. But not Royal Court, which is full of new features which add more personal involvement and an empowering level of control over how your society functions. It’s a bit painful that you can’t access most of it when playing as a duke or a tribal ruler, which had previously been two of my favorite types of characters and seem like a perfect fit for the kind of intimate, less expansion-focused playstyle having your own court allows. But the intrigue and excitement of the court itself are too good to pass up.

Diplomacy Is Not An Option review (early access): peasant-smashing fun on a giant scale

2 years 2 months ago

Speaking as a generally terrified person who curls up into a tiny ball whenever they feel threatened, the tower defence genre really resonates with me. Like a besieged castle, I am also in a state of constant high-alert and paralysing, teeth-grinding stress. I am incapable of any kind of meaningful conflict resolution, and embarrassingly vulnerable to being destroyed by hundreds of angry men with swords over the course of several helpless minutes.

Diplomacy Is Not An Option doesn’t bill itself as a tower defence game, but it is a real-time strategy game about protecting your medieval settlement as wave after wave of attackers try to smash it up. Rather than have you traipsing around the map in search of trouble to make, there is a refreshing focus on defence – offence’s nerdy younger sister – with victory determined not by how well you’ve conquered the surrounding land, but how capable you are of taking a beating and coming out on top.

Demon's Souls PS5 Remake Seemingly Still Has Undiscovered Items - But They May Never Be Found

2 years 2 months ago

Four items in Demon's Souls on PlayStation 5 seemingly remain undiscovered, despite the game being released more than a year ago – but a prominent dataminer says they may be completely unobtainable.

Lance McDonald, who's previously revealed secrets from Bloodborne, P.T., and God of War, tweeted that he knows the items exist in the game code but doesn't know how to obtain them, or if it's possible at all.

In the tweet (below), Mcdonald said, "Bluepoint Games added a number of new items to the Demon's Souls Remake that still remain undiscovered."

"If I knew how to get them myself, I would," he said in a follow-up. "I just know they exist in the data. If we ever get a PS5 jailbreak, maybe I'll be able to figure it out, but for now all I know is there's four undiscovered items, and what they're called."

Speaking to IGN, McDonald didn't reveal exactly how he came to know of the items, or what they're called, but did speculate that developer Bluepoint Games may have simply chosen not to include the items in the final game at all.

He said: "They could have created the items completely and chosen not to actually make it possible to find them. I have no way to know at the moment.

2 years 2 months ago

The Lego set you are about to see is a big SPOILER for people who haven't watched the second season of The Mandalorian. Read on at your own risk. This set is based on a moment that you should first see in the show.

Lucasfilm has done a fantastic job of keeping secrets under wraps for all of its Disney+ Star Wars shows. The Book of Boba Fett continues to deliver them in its first season, but none have been as big or as unexpected as Luke Skywalker's appearance in The Mandalorian. It's a moment that set the internet on fire, and has filled Star Wars fans with the belief that anything can happen in these shows.

Lego is one of the first toy companies to capture Luke Skywalker showing us how powerful he has become. The set is called Dark Trooper Attack, and it's scheduled to release on March 1. It's a smaller set, consisting of just 166 pieces and a price of $29.99.

Rune Factory 5 Bachelors and Bachelorettes English Romance Videos Shared

Love is in the air in Rune Factory 5, as it is with all entries, and a pair of new videos showcase some the and bachelors and bachelorettes. The two trailers each focus on certain characters. One only looks at the six bachelors from the game. The other involves the six bachelorettes. Each Rune Factory 5 romance video is quite brief, but offers a chance to hear the English voice acting and see the localization.

First, here’s a look at the budding romance between Rune Factory 5 bachelors and player characters. In order, it looks at Martin, Cecil, Murakumo, Ryker, Reinhard, and Lucas. Martin is a blacksmith. Cecil works as an amateur detective. Murakumo runs the inn and bathhouse. Ryker seems to only be a carpenter. Reinhard is a knight for the kingdom. Lucas is a mysterious figure.

Lost Ark review-in-progress: Diablo-like combat clashes with a very grindy MMO

In last year's hands-on with free-to-play action RPG-inspired MMO Lost Ark last year, I thought it had potential if you could survive the early slow burn. Having since returned to it for a few weeks, my thoughts remain largely the same. For all its flashy combat and fun moments, the sheer grind to reach its promised endgame may prove too much for many.

Lost Ark Review – Small Numbers Bad, Big Numbers Good

2 years 2 months ago

Lost Ark on PC

There’s something weirdly comforting about being able to shut off your brain while playing a game, and just take in the little pleasures of watching small numbers turn into big numbers, bags of loot bursting out of your enemies’ dead bodies as you pummel them to death, and feeling like an absolute god as you rake in experience points and pump up your skills to make them even stronger. Lost Ark is exactly the kind of game I’ll play when I’m winding down after a long day, but want to feel like I’m still making progress in something.

When I played the closed network beta last year, I came away from Lost Ark thinking it was a pretty solid looter action RPG. The story was, for the most part, complete nonsense, but the combat felt solid and satisfying, and the loot flowed non-stop. I’m a simple person. I see big numbers and fancy loot, and you’ve got me hooked. Throw in a combat system that’s not half bad, and I’m all in.

My impressions from the beta remain largely the same; you’ll create a character and choose a class, then embark on an exciting journey to find the titular Lost Ark and keep it out of enemy hands so you can save the world. Or something like that.

Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters Looks Like XCOM with Space Marines

2 years 2 months ago

If you've ever been on your way out of work and someone stops you to do one more thing, you might understand how your crew of Grey Knights feels at the start of Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters. The "one more thing" they asked you to do probably wasn't to fight off a daemonic plague threatening an entire sector of space, but you know, details. Fresh off of a pitched battle against cultists of the blood god, Khorne, these dutiful servants of the Imperium have been rerouted by the Inquisition to shoot, psi-blast, and chainsword their way through turn-based missions and a dynamic strategic layer. It has the feel of 40K meets XCOM, and that is entirely my kind of campaign.

The problem with this unplanned detour is that their previous campaign did a number on their ship and their chapter, so you'll be commanding a weakened force of the Emperor's finest aboard a vessel held together by tape, scrap, and hope. Repairing the very Warhammerly-named Baleful Edict is the main strategic progression system. Fixing up the engines allows you to travel around the sector faster, while getting the hospital back to full function will reduce the amount of time injured characters will need to heal.

PlatinumGames Hideki Kamiya Would Like to Revisit Scalebound

2 years 2 months ago

PlatinumGames Scalebound

In an interview with IGN Japan, PlatinumGames President Atsushi Inaba and Vice President Hideki Kamiya revealed that they would like to revisit Scalebound. Announced in 2014, Scalebound was a collaborative effort between PlatinumGames and Microsoft. However, in subsequent years, updates about the title became infrequent, and on January 9, 2017 it was announced Scalebound had been cancelled. However, Inaba stated that he would like to have a proper discussion with Microsoft about the potential future of the title.

Specifically, Inaba and Kamiya said this:

Inaba: As for Scalebound, this is something Kamiya has always wanted to do. So we would like to have a proper discussion with Microsoft.

Kamiya: We have a lot of work to do, and it's really no use for Microsoft to keep Scalebound. So we would like to do something about it! Phil! Let's do it together!

However, this isn't a confirmation that Scalebound will be revived. In April 2022, Microsoft CEO of Gaming Phil Spencer stated that Microsoft was not working on Scalebound in any capacity. He mentioned that while people believed something was in the works, that was absolutely not the case.

Scalebound was previously in development for Xbox One and PC. The title was effectively cancelled in 2017.

Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters Feels Like 40K XCOM (Hands-Off Preview)

2 years 2 months ago

A few days ago, I was shown a behind-closed-doors presentation of the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters by Complex Games.

It provided a bird’s-eye view of the gameplay, but do keep in mind that I did not get to play the game directly, so you can consider this article as an early first impression.

If the game’s title sounds familiar to the veterans among you, you shouldn’t be surprised. Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate is a turn-based tactical game published by SSI in 1998. It placed the player in control of the famous Ultramarines chapter of space marines locked in a struggle against the Khorne-following World Bearers.

This new game brings back the brand and the turn-based tactics setup, but not the protagonists. This time around, you’re controlling the elite demon-hunting space marines Grey Knights against the forces of Nurgle, including the Plague Marines of the Death Guard, within a sector infested by a deadly epidemic named Bloom.

Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters looks like aggressive space XCOM and I’m here for it

2 years 2 months ago

I was sold from the moment our Justicar sliced off the mutated Apostate Preacher’s tentacle arm. The poor thing was clutching a Vox Stave, and so removing his arm removed the use of his scariest abilities - although in this case the dismemberment proved academic, because it also left him exposed to immediate melee execution. That left our Interceptor free to shoot a nearby statue down on top of a cultist before stabbing him and his friend to death, which in turn gave our Apothecary enough space to chuck a grenade at a bridge and send three Poxwalkers plummeting to their doom.

I’m no Warhammermun. Those proper nouns are all cosmic Greek to me, but I’m relieved to report they didn't obscure the promise within the 30 minutes of Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters I was shown last week. This is fast-paced XCOM in space, with extensively destructible terrain, an intriguing dual focus on ranged and melee combat, and not a miss chance in sight. That should sound enticing to just about anyone.
