Now the PUBG Developer Is Getting into NFTs and the Metaverse

2 years 2 months ago

Editor's Note: The subject of NFTs is currently a very controversial topic in the gaming community. IGN urges community members to be respectful when engaging in conversation around this subject and does not endorse harassment of any kind.

PUBG: Battlegrounds' creator Krafton is developing an NFT metaverse in Unreal Engine in collaboration with NAVER, the company behind Asia's largest metaverse platform, ZEPETO, which has more than 290 million users.

Krafton will use its experience creating online games like PUBG to build the virtual world alongside a user-generated content creation tool in the Web 3.0 and NFT-based project.

NAVER Z, the subsidiary of NAVER that Krafton has entered a memorandum of understanding with, meaning a nonbinding agreement, will use its experience designing and running ZEPETO to manage the metaverse's services.

HyungChul Park, lead of the Web 3.0 team at Krafton, said: "This partnership between Krafton and NAVER Z is bolstered by each company’s unique expertise and shared global focused as they look toward a future driven by NFTs and metaverses.

"By combining Krafton's existing technologies and research on how to build scalable Web 3.0 creator-driven ecosystems with NAVER Z and ZEPETO’s experience and capabilities, we’re confident we can build a high-quality user-generated content-driven open metaverse that stands apart from other services and vitalizes the global creator economy through NFT technologies."

Uncharted Movie Director Working With PlayStation on Jak and Daxter Adaptation

2 years 2 months ago

Jak and Daxter could be the next PlayStation franchise to receive a TV or movie adaptation. Sony has lately been pushing film and TV adaptations of Uncharted and The Last of Us, and it looks like the initiative won't end there.

In an interview with Digital Trends, Uncharted movie director Ruben Fleischer said that he's developing a potential adaptation of the classic franchise. Fleischer said, "I’m actually working on Jak and Daxter, a version of that, for PlayStation, which I think would be really cool to bring to life."

Sony hasn't officially announced any plans, but Fleischer has at least confirmed that it's being discussed. This also means that there's some hope for a possible new Jak and Daxter game, as PlayStation released a Ratchet & Clank animated film, which led to a 2016 reboot on PlayStation 4.

The release of the Uncharted film later this month also lined up quite nicely with the launch of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection late last month on PlayStation 5. The Last of Us TV adaptation is heading to HBO, and there are rumors about a remake of the 2013 game as well.

Uncharted movie director reveals his next gig is a Jak and Daxter film

2 years 2 months ago

Ruben Fleischer, the director of Sony's upcoming live-action Uncharted movie, has revealed he's currently in the throes of adapting another beloved PlayStation property for the big screen - so if you've ever wished for a Jak and Daxter movie, today is your lucky day.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 Still In Pre-Production After All These Years

2 years 2 months ago

Beyond Good & Evil 2 has seemingly been in development hell for years, and there doesn't appear to be a finish line anywhere in sight.

Bloomberg reports that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still in pre-production after over five years of development. Rumblings of a Beyond Good & Evil sequel date all the way back to 2008, when Ubisoft showed off what seemed to be a teaser trailer for the game.

Nearly a decade later at E3 2017, the game was finally revealed. It looked like an incredibly ambitious project, promising a multi-planet world populated by dynamically-generated characters.

Earlier today, Itoi quote-tweeted the official Nintendo Direct tweet with a comment that roughly translates to, "7am, huh? Amazing. Maybe it'll be snowing."

Itoi's cryptic tweet immediately sent Nintendo fan speculation into overdrive, with some sending shots of various Earthbound characters in the snow.

Apparently taking notice, Itoi followed by quipping that he was seeing a lot of foreign language responses to his tweet, and wondering if they were especially interested in the topic of snow. A little later, he posted a third tweet featuring a weather map.

Telltale Games' long-awaited Wolf Among Us 2 gets first proper trailer, 2023 release

2 years 2 months ago

Some five years after its original announcement, Telltale Games' long-awaited The Wolf Among Us 2 has just received a first proper trailer, along with the news it'll be launching in 2023.

The Wolf Among Us 2 has, of course, had an eventful journey to reach this point; the original game - a five-episode story-driven adventure based on Bill Willingham's Fables comic books - released almost a decade ago in 2013 to much acclaim, and the demand for a sequel was immediate. The news fans had been waiting for eventually arrived in 2017, with confirmation The Wolf Among Us 2 was in development, but progress on the title regrettably halted after developer Telltale Games shut its doors the following year.

Microsoft Confirms Call of Duty, Popular Activision Blizzard Titles Will Remain Multiplatform Beyond Current Agreements

2 years 2 months ago

When Microsoft announced its plans to purchase Activision Blizzard, one of the first questions was whether Call of Duty and the publisher's other existing titles would eventually become Xbox exclusives. Head of Xbox Phil Spencer quickly stated that Microsoft plans to honor existing contractual agreements between Sony and Activision regarding Call of Duty specifically and vaguely expressed a desire to keep the series on PlayStation.

Though pretty definitive, the second bit of Phil's statement left room for interpretation. A new blog post by Microsoft further clarifies its commitment to keeping Activision Blizzard titles multiplatform. The post, which discusses a new set of Microsoft Store principles in preparation for the Activision acquisition approval process, says the following:

Pokemon Avatars Show off Sword & Shield Gym Leaders, Trainers

Pokemon Avatars Show off Sword & Shield Gym Leaders, Trainers

Pokemon fans can deck their social media profiles out with select gym leaders and rivals, thanks to a promotional campaign by the Pokémon Center Japan's official Twitter account. It commemorated the release of the Pokemon gym leaders and trainers mascot plush line, a series of dolls based on characters from Pokémon Sword and Shield.

The avatar release was based on raising the number of followers for the Pokémon Center account. Once the target number was reached, the account uploaded a set of Pokemon avatars for everyone.

https://twitter.com/pokemoncenterPR/status/1490973683984199681

In total, there are eleven Pokemon avatars to use. They're based on chibi versions of Galar League trainers and gym leaders Bede, Marnie, Milo, Nessa, Allister, Bea, Gordie, Melony, Raihan, Kabu, and Champion Dande. The icons feature the Japanese names of the trainers.

[gallery columns="6" link="file" ids="915622,915623,915624,915625,915626,915627,915628,915629,915630,915631,915632"]

Missing from the slate of Pokemon avatars are Ballonlea Fairy Badge leader Opal and Spikemuth Dark Badge leader Piers. The two are also absent from the line of plush dolls, though no reason was given for their exclusion. Some of the Galar League gym leaders are exclusive to different versions of the game. For example, Pokemon Sword owners encounter Bea, while Shield owners encounter Allister. Gordie and Melony are also version-exclusive, between Sword and Shield, respectively. Nessa, Kabu, Raihan, Marnie, Milo, and Dande are found in both versions of the game.

The Wolf Among Us 2 Is Being Released Episodically in 2023

2 years 2 months ago

Telltale has just released the first full trailer for The Wolf Among Us 2 after fans have been waiting for more since the very first teaser at The Game Awards back in 2019. The game will be coming to PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, and PS5 in 2023. It’ll be released episodically, even though the whole game will be completed before the launch of the first episode.

Geoff Keighley sat down with Telltale after the trailer reveal to get more info on what fans can expect to see from the game. We now know that this sequel takes place about six months after the end of the first game, with sheriff Bigby Wolf still working under Snow White while serving the residents of Fabletown.

The trailer shows Bigby trying to arrest well-known Fables from the Wizard of Oz stories — namely the scarecrow and tin man. And, as usual, things don’t go exactly as planned.

You can check out the trailer for yourself below to see flashbacks of Bigby in action while he speaks about his experiences.

Atomic Heart: Release Window Revealed + New Developer Q&A

2 years 2 months ago

Atomic Heart, the mysterious first-person shooter from developer Mundfish that's vaguely reminiscent of BioShock (in a good way), has cheekily revealed its release window. At the end of the new trailer (watch it above), the release window is revealed to be sometime in the final four months of 2022, as the trailer reveals "#######ber 2022," thus narrowing it to September, October, November, or December (and perhaps giving the Mundfish team some wiggle room if they're aiming for one of those earlier "-mber" months and end up needing to polish the game a bit longer). Whenever it drops, Atomic Heart will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

We also asked a few questions of the Russia-based Mundfish team via email.

IGN: How did Atomic Heart begin? It has been such a pleasant surprise, and Mundfish (respectfully) is not yet a name that most gamers already know.

Mundfish: The project began in early 2017. Back then, we wanted to test the waters of the VR market, started with a small project, and released it. But as the studio grew, the ambitions have also gone bigger. A year after, we realized that we had gathered an extremely talented team that was brought together by a single idea – to create a big, awesome, story-driven game. That's how it all started. When the first trailer in 2018 has gone viral, we finally understood that we have something truly special on our hands, which motivated us to give it all to this project.

New MLB The Show 22 Gameplay Trailer Features Randy Johnson & Ryan Howard

2 years 2 months ago

Last week, MLB The Show 22 was officially revealed along with a couple of cover reveal trailers showing off Shohei Ohtani on the standard edition and a manga-inspired version of the slugger on the MVP Edition. But news for the upcoming baseball title hasn’t stopped there. Earlier today, the official gameplay reveal trailer for MLB The Show 22 went live on YouTube via the Sony San Diego channel.

The trailer begins with a panning shot just beyond the center-field wall in Angel Stadium. It then cuts to a few gameplay shots of Ohtani pitching on the mound and launching bombs into the stands. Then it cuts to multiple different teams doing similar pitching, diving, swinging, and celebration animations.

There wasn’t anything that stood out as new in the gameplay. The trailer was very much just a brief view of how the game will look on the current generation of consoles. Nothing about gameplay mechanics was mentioned in this trailer.

Near the end of the video, you briefly get a glimpse of slugger, Ryan Howard, rounding the bases. And later on, there was a surprising reveal of baseball Hall of Famer, Randy Johnson, dealing from the mound in a classic Arizona Diamondbacks jersey. Johnson was one of the most dominant and imposing pitchers in MLB history standing at a ridiculous 6’10”. It’ll be interesting to see how these all-time greats stand up against the superstars of today.

The Wolf Among Us 2 Will Be Released Episodically in 2023, But Will Be Developed Like a Single Game

2 years 2 months ago

The Wolf Among Us 2 will be released episodically in 2023, but Telltale will complete development on every chapter before the first part is released.

Announced during today's Wolf Among Us 2 news stream, Telltale is developing the entire five-episode season simultaneously, and will release it with a 'tighter cadence' than the original game. Exact timings weren't given, but we now know it will be released for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and Xbox One in 2023.

The original incarnation of Telltale developed many of its episodic games chapter-by-chapter, occasionally leading to long delays when development problems arose. The Wolf Among Us 2 , developed by a fresh team under the Telltale banner, won't be following suit.

The stream today also included a first gameplay trailer and new story details. The game, set 6 months after the first, will see anti-hero Bigby Wolf suspended and in anger management counseling. Snow White will now be deputy mayor of the game's Fabletown setting.

The trailer gives us a sense of the game's heavily stylized visuals, synth score, and introduces us to new characters, including Tin Man and Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz. In classic Wolf Among Us style, they aren't the characters you remember.

Tales of Luminaria Multiplayer Boss Battle Getting Nightmare Difficulty

2 years 2 months ago

Tales of Luminaria Multiplayer Boss Battle Getting Nightmare Difficulty

The 1.2.1 Tales of Luminaria update is here and the multiplayer boss battles will look different as a result. A number of changes appeared in the patch. Among them are changes that alter how someone can play in those challenges and what they'll get. Most notably, the Easy difficulty is being removed. Nightmare is being moved in to the new gap. The sorts of reward equipment and number of event points someone can earn changed too.

The changes to Tales of Luminaria multiplayer boss battle mean things will look and play a bit different. The announcement noted that with the removal of Easy, Normal will be the new difficulty allowing everyone in. As for Nightmare, your Power level must be at least 10,000 to participate. With rewards, people playing on Hard could get one piece of equipment. Those on Extreme or Nightmare could get two pieces, with each one guaranteed to be different. Finally, you can get up to 1,000.000 event points, rather than only 500,000.

Other changes went into effect with the 1.2.1 Tales of Luminaria update too. There are now control guides that go over how you perform attacks. People can find these when they check the character screen, pause, or look under help. Artes swapping will be a bit easier, as it will let you go between old and new and slots. Also, Ana-Maria's second episode is out today.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Expansion Reportedly Turned Into New Standalone Game

2 years 2 months ago

Ubisoft has reportedly turned an Assassin's Creed Valhalla expansion featuring Basim into its own standalone game that is expected to release either this year or in 2023.

Bloomberg reports that people familiar with the project, codenamed Rift, said it won't have a massive open-world but will instead focus on stealth gameplay and is overall "smaller in scope" than previous Assassin's Creed games.

Rift was allegedly turned into its own game in late 2021 to flesh out Ubisoft's thin release schedule and is expected to release before Assassin's Creed Infinity, the upcoming evolution of the franchise that's rumored to be a Fortnite-style evolving platform game.

Eurogamer said it's also familiar with Rift and heard from sources that it will take place in Baghdad before the events of Valhalla. Basim is already confirmed to be from the Abbasid Caliphate, of which Baghdad was capital in parts of the 9th century when Valhalla is set.

A Ubisoft spokesperson told Bloomberg that it doesn't comment "on rumors or speculation as they do a disservice to our development teams and community."
