Unicorn Overlord Has Rapport Relationship Building with Characters

Unicorn Overlord Has Rapport Relationship Building with Characters

Atlus and Vanillaware revealed that there will be relationship elements with Unicorn Overlord characters in a Rapport system. This will also involve the ability for Alain to exchange a Ring of the Maiden to take part in a Rite of Covenant with one other character.

When going through Unicorn Overlord, people can build a Rapport with characters to improve relationships by eating together, fighting together, and giving gifts. Some examples of things you can give to a character guarding a town are Cut Flowers, Dice, a Replica Sword, Scented Soap, or Secular Texts. While gifts involve a single person, meals can involve a group. The screenshot showing a dinner with allies noted that something like Bacon and Soft-Boiled Egg Galettes is a meal for three and increases Rapport by 70 for 630G. Meanwhile, the Pasta al Pomodoro with Eggplant feeds four and boosts Rapport by 90 for 1080G.

Some of the Rapport bonuses were brought up as well. Stats for characters in a unit will go up if they all share relationships. Rapport Conversations come up between some people who have gotten to know each other well enough. Also, the Rite of the Covenant can happen between Alain and an ally when their relationship is maxed out, with the initial screenshot showing Chloe, Clive, Hodrick, Lex, Melisandre, Scarlett, Travis, and Yahna in the list of possible people shown in the Atlus screenshot.

Former Rockstar dev explains GTA6's missing PC release, calls it a matter of priorities

4 months 3 weeks ago

Former Rockstar developer Mike York has explained why GTA 6 isn't releasing on PC at launch.

After years of waiting, Rockstar gave us our first slice of GTA 6 last week with a new trailer. Soon after, the studio confirmed the game will release sometime in 2025 on both Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. At the time of writing, there is no word on a PC release window.

According to York, who worked on the likes of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 during his time at Rockstar, a PC port of a big AAA games takes longer to come out than console because a studio has to "prioritise what sells".

Against the Storm review - a perfectly chaotic city builder

4 months 3 weeks ago

This isn't a Game of the Year article, but it could be: from its earliest iteration in Early Access, to its full release now, Against the Storm has become one of my all-time favourites. There are so many points where the concept of a roguelike city builder could wear out - it evades them all with endless, surprising depths. It has become my first choice of what to play when I feel like just playing a game, and despite the time I've poured into it, I'm still - with joyful frustration - learning new things about it.

The premise sees you establishing a series of settlements across the map, your attempts lasting as long as it takes each settlement to either become successful, or for the ominous Scorched Queen to lose her patience and deem the settlement lost. You win a settlement when you have a certain number of reputation points - each point gained removing an impatience one - while the impatience gained slowly over time, and rapidly ticked up when settlers leave or die, means you don't get stuck in a settlement that just won't take. Either way, mine tend to be resolved within an hour or two - just long enough for a single evening session.

Its elevator pitch is an enticing one: a city builder without any slog, where you don't wear out your tried-and-tested strategies, where each session is as new and exciting as the one before. It's a delight to learn that Against the Storm really is all those things - but after spending the better part of a year on it, it feels almost deceptive to say 'this is what Against the Storm is'. There's just so much more to it, offering endless depth and complexity - if you want it.

Review: Asgard’s Wrath 2 Brings a Console Quality Action-RPG to VR

4 months 3 weeks ago

Review: Asgard’s Wrath 2 Brings a Console Quality Action-RPG to VR

It can feel like a lot of VR adventures can sort of chop an experience up into sections, not really feeling on par with a title you’d play on a console or PC. With Asgard’s Wrath 2, I felt like I was going through a definitive action-RPG that had these open world experiences and would feel as home on a PS5 or Switch as it does in VR on the Quest 3.

Asgard’s Wrath 2 picks up where the sequel left off. Betrayed by their “mentor” Loki, the player’s fledgling god is trapped. After a supernatural creature breaks into the otherworldly tavern where you’re locked away and a brief bout with it, the three Weavers pluck you out of danger and reveal that fledgling is really a Cosmic Guardian. Loki used the power gained in the first game to head to new realms, and now the player goes from Norse mythology to Egyptian mythology, working alongside Horus and his allies to face Set and new opponents. It’s a big game that sends you off through different worlds, with four heroes and five followers to rely on at your side.

Doom At 30: The evolution of Doom through its first levels

4 months 3 weeks ago

Video game openings have always been a source of fascination for me. As a player, you're excited by the prospect of the game to come - the sights you'll see, the challenges you'll face - and first impressions can make or break your entire perception of what a game is versus the one you had stored in your head before switching it on. For video game creators, however, a new beginning is often racked with questions. What, exactly, do you choose to show players first? How will you introduce them to something they've never seen before? And if that game is successful, how do you keep reinventing that first impression across what could be several decades?

In revisiting every mainline Doom game to celebrate its 30th anniversary this month, it's clear that even id's iconic shooter has wrestled with how to answer these question, and the ways it's tried to reinvent itself over the years paints a captivating portrait of a series trying to move with the times. Nowhere is this more apparent than in its opening levels. Played in close succession, crushing 30 years into not even quite three hours, what emerges isn't just the evolution of one of the all-time great PC games, but also a potted history of the FPS. So join me as we chart Doom's rise, fall and rebirth through the lens of its first stages.

Honkai: Star Rail Sparkle Will Be Quantum Harmony

4 months 3 weeks ago

honkai star rail sparkle

HoYoVerse teased Sparkle, who will be a new five-star character in Honkai: Star Rail Version 2.0. She will be a Quantum Harmony character.

On paper, Sparkle just wants to join the Genius Society despite her lack of “cool skills” or major ambitions. In reality, she is a member of the Masked Fools, who worship Aha the Elation. Other Masked Fools that we’ve encountered so far in the series include Giovanni from Aetherium Wars and Sampo. The only thing Sparkle cares about is her own amusement, and she is a great actress who can hide her true self behind countless masks. Her design has a very strong Japanese aesthetic, complete with a kitsune mask she wears as a hair ornament. There are also goldfish swimming around her in her splash art.

More information on Sparkle’s kit will appear closer to her release window. In English, Lizzie Freeman voices her. Freeman has previously appeared as Trish in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind and Chisato Nishikigi in Lycoris Recoil. Reina Ueda will voice Sparkle in the Japanese version of the game. Some of Ueda’s past roles include Kanao in Demon Slayer and Ganyu in Genshin Impact.

Doom At 30: Does 1993's Doom still hold up for a first-time player today?

4 months 3 weeks ago

Confession time, readers. Before a couple of weeks ago, I had never played the original Doom. As a child, my family didn't have much money and I didn't get my first laptop until I was 16. Thus, I missed out on a lot of what are now considered PC staples. With dread, I'm often met with the accursed exclamation, "You've not played insert game before?" followed by a good dose of judgment. But what do you do when you need to play through a backlog of games all while keeping up-to-date with new releases for work? With games now stretching out at 100+ hours apiece, where is the time for old classics like Doom?

For me, approaching Doom was cathartic. Playing a game that's older than myself was certainly an experience, but I was shocked at how well it holds up.

Game sales dip but PS5 drives console market up 60% | European Monthly Charts

4 months 3 weeks ago

Europe posted a solid month for video game sales during November, driven by Call of Duty, EA Sports FC 24 and PS5.

24.6 million video games were sold across tracked European markets, a rise of 20% over the year before. However, this is because November 2023 was a 'five week' month compared with the four weeks of November 2022. If we just look at the same four week period, sales were actually down slightly by 2%.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was the big driver of sales. It was the only real new release of note for the month, and made up for the absence of other AAA titles (last year saw the release of God of War Ragnarök and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet). Last year's Call of Duty (Modern Warfare 2) launched in October, so it was a significantly bigger November for COD this year than last year.

Becoming Hailey: Marvel's Spider-Man 2 actress Natasha Ofili and Insomniac on Deaf representation and more

4 months 3 weeks ago

If you have played Marvel's Spider-Man 2, you will know Hailey Cooper. She was first introduced in the Spider-Man spin-off Miles Morales, before her role was expanded for Insomniac's recent sequel.

Hailey is, quite simply, a brilliant character, and one that actress Natasha Ofili brings an incredible warmth and humanity to. Hailey is strong, she is funny, she is kind and she is a supportive friend to Miles. She is also Deaf. Hailey wears hearing aids, she communicates with Miles through American Sign Language (ASL), uses text to speak with those who do not sign and her school has an ASL interpreter on campus.

I sat down with Ofili over Zoom, to talk about the importance of seeing Deaf characters like Hailey in video games, as well as where the medium goes next. We cover everything from how she got the part (before she even knew it was for a Spider-Man game), to sign language consultants, authenticity, chemistry with her castmates and more.

The Best GTA Games, All 12 Ranked

Let’s make one thing clear, none of the games on this list are bad. They not only helped to crate a whole new way of playing, but they have been influential in everything from design to tone. The game that started it off may be ‘last’ on this list, but that’s only because each of the games that followed it up were so incredible.

Square Enix Explains Why Aerith Follows Yellow Flowers in FFVII Remake

Square Enix Explains Why Aerith Follows Yellow Flowers in FFVII Remake

Square Enix shared a post on social media explaining the symbolism behind the yellow flowers that Aerith sells in FFVII Remake. The developers explained the meaning behind Aerith, saying she is following the yellow flowers.

This particular piece of dialogue is taken from the beginning of Chapter 17 after Cloud and the party reunite with Aerith on the 65th floor of the Shinra Building. In this scene, Aerith is surrounded by the Whispers while she explains that the Shinra Electric Power Company isn't the real enemy and that there’s a bigger threat out there.

After explaining that every time the Whispers touch her, she loses a part of herself, she says, "Follow them. The yellow flowers." In the original Japanese text, this line is slightly different. Aerith instead says, "The yellow flowers were guiding me."

The FFVII Remake Scenario Staff explained that the yellow flowers symbolize the experiences and feelings Aerith has seen since her first appearance in Sector 8, as well as those that have been “taken away” by the Whispers.

Pokemon Sleep Users Slept More in 2023 Than in 2022

4 months 3 weeks ago

pokemon sleep

User data from Pokemon Sleep shows that, at least in Japan, players of the game have slept more in 2023 compared to 2022. Players slept almost thirty minutes more on average in September 2023 than in September 2022. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

LY Corporation was the one to present these findings. It tracked data from Pokemon Sleep users and search engines and compared them with a control group that didn’t play or use the app. It found that not only did players enjoy around 26 more minutes of sleep on average compared to their sleep time in 2022, but they also tended to research better methods as well. Some search terms that users looked for included aromatherapy recommendations, ways to sleep when not sleepy, and ideal sleep patterns.

In comparison, only a few people from the control group searched for ways to improve their sleep. They also didn’t look for as many options as the Pokemon Sleep players. The control group only had a minute more sleep time in 2023 compared to 2022. This study showed that the app did help people sleep more, as well as made them seriously think more about ways to improve it.

Yu-Gi-Oh Mokey Mokey Plush Appears in Japan

4 months 3 weeks ago

mokey mokey plush yu-gi-oh

A plush of Mokey Mokey from Yu-Gi-Oh GX has appeared as a prize in crane games in Japan. It’s available from Torumo, an online crane game you can download for your iPhone or Android device. [Thanks, Dengeki Online!]

The Yu-Gi-Oh Mokey Mokey plush from Torumo is quite large, at 50 x 45 x 10 cm. Fittingly, Torumo lists it as a “big” plush. The Mokey Mokey plush is made with felt, and so it’s soft to the touch. This makes it a good toy to hug as well, according to Torumo. The plush’s wings are smaller than the actual Mokey Mokey’s, so they don’t get in the way when you hold onto it, and it still has the monster’s question mark on the head.

Mokey Mokey is a Fairy-Type Normal Monster that debuted during the Yu-Gi-Oh GX era of the franchise. It has fairly pathetic stats on its own. However, some decks revolve around it using the Continuous Spell Card, Mokey Mokey Smackdown. These cards and the Fusion Monster Mokey Mokey King are all available in games like Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel. However, they’re not meta at all, so they’re more suitable if you want a challenge or if you want to make a joke deck.

In your Year in Review for 2023, you can check out how many games you played on the Nintendo Switch for 2023, as well as how much time you played in total. It even breaks down the data into how much time you spent on your top games and which month you spent gaming the most. There is also a chart that details your gaming trends in terms of what genre you tended to play the most in 2023.

At the end, you can download your stats to either save for yourself or share them online. You can also choose your favorite game from all of the ones you played in 2023. I chose Anonymous;Code. However, it’s unclear whether it does anything for your profile or the game’s store page. The words “Nice pick!” showed up after I clicked the heart button, and that was it.

After looking through your Year in Review, it shows some games that’ll come out in 2024. These appear to be general suggestions from Nintendo rather than ones that an algorithm gives based on your gaming trends.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 fans itching to return to New York for some New Game Plus action will need to wait just a little while longer; developer Insomniac Games has announced it's delaying the previously promised mode - alongside a number of other features - into "early" 2024 for some additional testing ahead of release.

Insomniac confirmed Marvel's Spider-Man 2 would - like its predecessor - be getting a New Game Plus mode just prior to its launch back in October, with the developer saying it hoped to have the feature in players' hands "before end of year".

That, alas, will no longer be the case; Insomniac has now revealed Spider-Man 2's next major update - which will contain a number of "eagerly awaited" features including audio descriptions and the aforementioned New Game Plus - is now targeting a release "early" next year. "We have been working vigilantly on these features," the studio explained in a statement posted to social media, "and require more testing to ensure the quality is up to our standards".
