Star Trek: Infinite review: Not exactly a strategy pioneer, but still an enjoyable journey

6 months 2 weeks ago

I'm honestly a little surprised by how much I'm enjoying Star Trek: Infinite. It is not the ultimate Star Trek strategy game, but nor is it a bog standard 4X strategy in an unfortunate 80s leotard. "Lets you play your own Star Trek story" is a fair summary of what it's about, even if the bulk of that story in practical terms is building space stations to claim territory, and filling up planets with farms, cities, and empire-specific labour camps, forums, and whatever hippie garbage the feds have. Of course, it has the advantage of riding the coattails of already-established fiction and maybe that's cheating a little, but the result is a sort of grand 4X that in most regards I've enjoyed more the longer I played it.

Star Trek: Infinite Review

6 months 2 weeks ago

Star Trek and the 4X genre seem like a match so perfect it’s a fantasy you’d just have to create on a Holodeck. A grand universe to explore, tons of interesting species and factions to meet, and some very cool spaceships; what’s not to like? With so much promise, Star Trek: Infinite could have been – should have been – a slam dunk. But while I really wanted to like Star Trek: Infinite, it didn’t seem to like me back. It has some neat and unique ideas, but after dealing with more than a few off design choices and seeing several playthroughs blown up dozens of hours in by bugs that prevented me from performing major actions, I’m happy to explore strange new worlds elsewhere.

It’s quicker to list the few things Infinite does right than wrong, so let’s start there. This space-based grand strategy game is clearly heavily inspired by the excellent Stellaris, but developer Nimble Giant Entertainment has done a good job of making things just different enough to distinguish itself. You’ll start by picking one of four factions: the Federation, the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Empire, or the Cardassian Union. This choice isn’t just for flavor, either, as each faction plays dramatically differently, with unique units, mechanics, and different ways to expand its empire.

Star Trek: Infinite review - it's a good day to wait for mods

6 months 2 weeks ago

As President T'Pragh of the United Federation of Planets, it's routine for me to hear from the USS Enterprise, the pride and joy of our fleet. It's another for the message sender to be tiresome prodigy Wesley Crusher, historical bearer of unwanted news. This time, Wesley isn't the problem. The problem is that the Federation doesn't even have the Enterprise yet - building the flagship is a milestone mission in the game, and at this current point in time, there is no possible Enterprise from which Ensign Crusher could be hailing me from. On an episode of The Next Generation, this could easily be a setup for a fun pocket dimension-themed episode or a time loop narrative, but it's not. This is the erratic world of Star Trek: Infinite, a grand strategy reskin of Stellaris that boldly goes to places that don't always make sense.

Navigating the storm: Lessons learned from the mobile market's downturn

6 months 2 weeks ago

For quite a while the gaming market was considered by some to be an evergreen industry that thrives regardless of the worldwide economic situation.

And it's no wonder such beliefs were common, as the videogames market has been growing for the last 30 years, performing relatively well even during the tough 2007-2008 crisis. In 2020, not the best time for many sectors, the revenues of video game companies increased by 23.1% (Newzoo).

However, everything changed when 2022 hit the world. According to data.ai, the size of the video game industry in 2022 amounted to $193 billion, a 5% decrease from the 2021 figures. Another "novelty" was that the leader of the fall was the mobile games segment which comprised more than half of the overall gaming industry and declined by almost 7%.

Genshin Impact Wriothesley Cogs in the Machine Web Event Involves Investigations

The Genshin Impact Cogs in the Machine Wriothesley web event is live and tasks people with helping him with investigations in the fortress. Players can head to the official site to play through it until October 17, 2023. That also happens to be the day his banner will begin in-game. So accompanying the news, HoYoVerse also shared the four-stars who will be featured on his and Venti’s wishes.

As he’s the Fortress of Meropide Administrator, the Wriothesley event involves him doing his job while we assist him. After logging into the game with your HoYoVerse account, you’ll help him investigate four inmates. In each case, you’ll need to look at suspicious spots around them to figure out what’s going on. So, as an example, you might need to look around any boxes near them to search for evidence. However, you might also need to perform certain actions, like watching the latest Genshin Impact trailer for him, to earn points to continue the search.

Warner Bros. Reportedly Rejected Animated Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Crossover Pitch

6 months 2 weeks ago

Mortal Kombat and DC fans have for years hoped for a Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe crossover movie or show, but it seems unlikely after Warner Bros. reportedly rejected a pitch.

Jeremy Adams, who wrote Mortal Kombat animated projects Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge, Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind, and Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, said rights holder Warner Bros. rejected a pitch for a Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe crossover.

“I would lower your expectations,” Adams replied when asked about the possibility by ComicBook.com. “I don't know if they have any plans to do more. I do know that we pitched that a while ago, but it was kind of rebuffed.”

But why? Adams sounded nonplussed when asked: “Well, I think at the end of the day, I don't know if they're ever going to do any more. I hope they do, and I hope they call me to be involved. That would be great because I really love it. But I don't know. I don't know. I think it would be really cool though. Trust me, I would love to see a DC Mortal Kombat. That would be super, super cool.”

Princess Peach Box Art Updated to Look a Little More Like She Does in the Super Mario Bros. Movie

6 months 2 weeks ago

Nintendo has updated the Princess Peach: Showtime box art to look a bit more like The Super Mario Bros. Movie's version of the character.

As spotted by No Context Super Mario on Twitter (below), the upcoming Nintendo Switch game's key art has been updated to make Peach look just a little less gleeful.

The bizarre change is barely noticeable unless fans are actually looking for it, but does affect both the traditional-looking Peach in the art alongside Kung Fu Peach, who also gets a more determined, perhaps angrier update.

Amazon's October Prime Day sale may officially be over, but lots of the deals on board games are still very much live. You do still need to be a Prime member to take advantage of most of these deals. So if your board game collection could use some freshening up, you still have time to save a boat-load of cash. But you should probably hurry, because there's no telling when Uncle Amazon will turn off the deal faucet and the prices will return to normal.

Resident Evil 3: The Board Game for $38.99

Just like in the video game, you're stuck in Raccoon City during the zombie apocalypse. You and up to three friends can play as Jill, Carlos, Mikhail, or Nikolai, working together through memorable locations from the game, to escape the city with your life.

Star Wars Rebellion for $69.99

Steam tightening up developer security with SMS verification following malware hacking attack

6 months 2 weeks ago

Valve is introducing SMS verification for developers as part of its new security measures on Steamworks. This follows earlier incidents of hackers taking over several developers' accounts on the platform, where they added malware to various game builds.

These attacks, which were verified by PC Gamer, only affected less than 100 Steam users, although NanoWar: Cells VS Virus (pictured above) developer Benoît Freslon recently revealed the hackers had taken control of his browser access tokens. This essentially gave the hackers access to any service Freslon had been logged into.

"I just used my dev account to release the game few hours before the hack I suppose," he shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Dead Island 2's Haus DLC feels like a homage to Bioshock and Deathloop

6 months 2 weeks ago

I was mixed on Dambusters' Dead Island 2 - I thought the combat had flair but not much depth, loved the game's decadently disastrous Los Angeles, but hated how exploration boiled down to nosing around for crafting materials. The game's first story DLC expansion, Haus, amps up the weirdness of the environments by transporting you to a "surreal, psycho-horror dreamscape" in blissful Malibu.

There are flashes of Glass Onion and The Menu here, but I was reminded just as much of the eerier parts of Bioshock, that underwater monument to crackpot billionaires with far too much time on their hands. Here's a video of the opening.

Ex-PlatinumGames' VP Hideki Kamiya Launches YouTube Channel, Can't Work in Games for a Year

6 months 2 weeks ago

Famed video game developer and former PlatinumGames' executive vice president Hideki Kamiya has started a YouTube channel after leaving the company in September.

Kamiya so far only has one video available on Hideki Kamiya Channel that seemingly shows him leaving the PlatinumGames office before talking about future plans, why he left the studio he co-founded, and what he's been doing in the meantime (making curry and watching TV).

Kamiya also revealed he can't work in the video game industry for a year, likely due to a non-compete agreement that essentially allows PlatinumGames to be the sole beneficiary of his ideas, but Kamiya only said this is "due to reasons".

I left the company because I wanted to follow my beliefs as a game creator.

The developer — who directed Resident Evil 2 and was chief creator of Devil May Cry while working at Capcom, before leading the likes of Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101 at PlatinumGames — was vague about his decision to leave in September, saying only it came based on his own beliefs.

Though he still doesn't give an explicit reason in the video, Kamiya did share more insight. "I left the company because I wanted to follow my beliefs as a game creator," he said. "And to choose the path I think is right and move on."

But according to Bloomberg, the European Union has decided the changes to the deal do not need to go through the approvals process again. Neither the Commission or Microsoft have commented on the report.

Lords Of The Fallen review: realm-hopping magic can't keep this Soulslike from getting on your nerves

6 months 2 weeks ago

Lords Of The Fallen is a reboot of CI Games and Deck 13's 2014 action-RPG called… Lords Of The Fallen. We thought the original was average and largely forgettable, so how does the new LOTF stack up against it nine years later? Well, it's definitely going to appeal to more folks by being a fairly enjoyable soulslike that ticks most checkboxes, and that rises above most of the competition by popping a magic lantern in your hands.

Raise a light to the dark fantasy world and it'll reveal a more dribbly parallel universe you can warp between at almost any time. This spooky lantern might open up some cool realm-hopping twists on your grim adventure, and the game as a whole might instil a sense of exploration sure to please souls fans after a familiar hit of uncertain peril, but its finer details chip away at your patience. It's not long before your tentative pushes through horrible towns and creaky walkways soon give way to wild sprint finishes born from pure frustration.

Lords of the Fallen Review

6 months 2 weeks ago

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. While the original Lords of the Fallen from 2014 was one of the earliest to bravely take a stab at recreating FromSoftware’s lightning in a bottle, it didn’t quite hit that high mark. Nearly a decade and about a million soulslike copycats later, there’s perhaps no better time for its follow-up to take a second swipe – and thankfully, this new, confusingly identically named Lords of the Fallen confidently lands its strike. Its world, divided into dual realities, is absolutely awesome to explore, buildcrafting is diverse and complex, and combat is so smooth and satisfying that I’m willing to forgive all the ways it cribs from its contemporaries. Some pretty severe performance issues and bugs as well as disappointingly easy boss fights mean this latest thrust isn’t quite a fatal blow, but even so, I expect to spend many more hours impaling enemies and exploring every nook and cranny of its cleverly split world for secrets.

Lords of the Fallen is yet another entry in the action-RPG soulslike craze, complete with an unsettling fantasy setting, other players invading your game for some co-op or PvP goodness, and, of course, lots of dying. It makes use of the same sort of deadly third-person combat system full of dodge rolling, posture meters, and emoting over fallen enemies as a sign of utmost disrespect. A lot is borrowed from FromSoft classics (in this case, Dark Souls specifically), but there’s also quite a bit of unique stuff to get excited about, too. That includes things like some super cool dual-reality shenanigans, or a nifty magical lamp that lets you flay the souls right out of your enemies.

Lords of the Fallen (2023) review - a Dark Souls tribute lacking its own identity

6 months 2 weeks ago

She's a fierce warrior, but she's crying tears of blood. After a tense battle of graceful sweeping sword arcs - and me frantically dodging - she sprouts a set of scarlet wings, flies upwards, and proceeds to rain down hell.

This is Pieta, the first proper boss in Lords of the Fallen after the tutorial. Or, as I like to call her, Budget Malenia. It's abundantly clear where developer Hexworks has taken inspiration, leaning into the most popular aspects of FromSoftware's Souls games - here Elden Ring's most celebrated encounter. Pieta is emblematic of the game as a whole: Lords of the Fallen looks like Souls, it plays like Souls, but it's an inferior imitation that's rough around the edges.

If the name seems familiar, you may remember the 2014 Lords of the Fallen from developer Deck13 and publisher CI Games that also attempted to replicate the Souls experience. I went back to that for the purpose of this review and it certainly hasn't aged well with its lumbering combat and generic visuals. This new Lords of the Fallen is a complete reimagining from Hexworks (once more published by CI Games), with improved combat and a fresh story.

Sony discusses five-year journey to launching PlayStation Access controller

6 months 2 weeks ago

I recently got to test out PlayStation Access at a hands-on event in London, Sony's new customisable accessibility controller. I was one of a handful of people attending, some with disabilities and some without. With the device before us all, we prodded and poked, we customised, we compared our setups. And we were able to play a number of games ranging in complexity.

Sony recognises that disabilities are different for everyone and the Access isn't a universal solution. What works for one player may not work for another with the same disability. But that's why the Access is so reconfigurable, and Sony has carefully considered so many options. Even the packaging is accessible: evenly weighted and opened with one hand.

So how do you design an accessibility controller with so many variables? Sony looked at three major areas that informed the design: how people will hold the controller, how they will be able to accurately press buttons, and how they will be able to use the sticks effectively. It can be held, used on a surface, or screwed into a tripod with no set orientation, its large magnetic buttons are reconfigurable, and the stick has a flexible position with swappable caps.

Lords Of The Fallen Review – A Flawed Return

Lords of the Fallen Game Informer review

Reviewed on: PC
Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Rating: Mature

Lords of the Fallen captured my interest in its early hours more than its 2014 predecessor of the same name ever did. But despite a solid gameplay foundation, stunning world, and unique two-realm mechanic, by the time I reached credits after 48 hours, I was overjoyed to be done. What begins as a remarkable soft reboot unravels by the halfway point due to pacing issues, abundant repetition, and lackluster level design, unfortunately leaving a disappointing back half to slog through.

Platinum Games Hideki Kamiya YouTube Channel Unemployed Not Retiring

Platinum Games co-founder Hideki Kamiya announced last month he was departing from the studio. Having founded it in 2006 in Osaka, Japan, later working on games like Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101, he left his reason for leaving up in the air. He simply said, "This came after a lot of consideration based on my own beliefs" and that he feels "this outcome is for the best." Now, just a few weeks later, Kamiya has started a YouTube channel – aptly called "Hideki Kamiya Channel" – and in his first video, he reveals he's not retiring, as first reported by VideoGamesChronicle

In the video, we see Kamiya presumably leaving his office with a box of knick-knacks and more in hand before leaving in a Lamborghini. In the first video, he talks about how he's currently unemployed, joking that people need to subscribe to his channel. VideoGamesChronicle reports that Kamiya says he actually hasn't been to work for a while.

Counter-Strike 2 Flooded With Players Doing the ‘Michael Jackson Peek’ to Lean Around Corners

6 months 2 weeks ago

Competitive shooter players have for years peeked around corners to try to get a jump on their opponents. But one method players are currently using in Valve’s Counter-Strike 2 is just criminal.

The Counter-Strike 2 community has dubbed this one the ‘Michael Jackson peek’, and it’s easy to see why. It triggers a bizarre animation glitch that makes the player avatar look like it’s doing the gravity-defying lean Michael Jackson made famous in the music video for Smooth Criminal.

What’s going on here, and how is the ‘Michael Jackson peek’ done? It involves setting up keybinds so when you press your directional keys, you're activating movement in that direction and also simultaneously activating the controller binds to move in the opposite direction, triggering an animation bug of some kind.

Powerwashing gets gruesome in Crime Scene Cleaner

I always find it difficult to pick out which demos are worth my limited time whenever Steam Next Fest rolls around again. The process is made a lot easier when I find something which promises the zen-like quality of PowerWash Simulator.

It may not seem like it at first, but somehow Crime Scene Cleaner manages to deliver on that promise. Despite the lack of cats and the abundance of dead bodies and blood.

You take on the role of a single dad who's a school caretaker (or janitor, seeing as the game takes place in the US) by day, and a mob cleanup crew by night. The mob pays much better than the regular day job, and we need the money to pay for our sick daughter's healthcare. Ah, the good old American healthcare system.

Pokémon Go looks set to introduce the ability to party up, and explore alongside friends in-game.

A teaser image posted on social media shows the silhouettes of four in-game avatars standing next to a gym with a raid egg, suggesting that four-player teams will be able to travel together and head as one into the game's PVE battles.

Pokémon Go developer Niantic captioned the image with a teasing eye emoji, an emoji wearing a party hat, and the hashtag #GoStartTheParty.

Horizon Forbidden West Gets a Huge Price Drop at Amazon

6 months 2 weeks ago

Update: As we predicted, this deal did not last long and is now listed at $47 instead of $27. Keep an eye on @IGNDeals on Twitter for further updates. You can read the original story below.

Horizon Forbidden West has dropped to just $27 at Amazon after the October Prime Day sales. That means you don't need an Amazon Prime membership to access the deal, and you can go ahead and purchase the game right away if you want to. This is a $43 discount compared to the MSRP, making this one of the best deals we've ever seen on the 2022 Game of the Year contender.

But, it's worth noting that because this is such a good deal, we could see the game sell out incredibly quickly. So, to avoid disappointment, make your purchase ASAP. Plus, it's also worth considering that Horizon Forbidden West is also available to play at no extra cost for PS Plus Extra subscribers.

More PS5 Video Game Deals Still Live

This will be your last chance to secure any of these deals now that Prime Day has ended, with only a few left hanging on after the sale finished (until they inevitably reappear during the Black Friday sales). Amazon is still delivering remarkable discounts, marking some of the best we've encountered on first-party PS5 games. Here's a roundup of the absolute best Prime Day offers still available for PS4 and PS5 games.
