Paradox to write down Lamplighters League costs, confirms layoffs at Harebrained Schemes

5 months 2 weeks ago

Paradox Interactive has announced it will write down capitalised development costs for The Lamplighters League, and confirmed layoffs occurred at developer Harebrained Schemes earlier this year.

In a post on its website, the Swedish company explained that SEK 320 million ($29.4 million) will be "recognised as costs in the fourth quarter of 2023," which will have an impact on its profit before tax during the same quarter, with losses linked to the title estimated to reach SEK 248 million ($22.8 million).

"The Lamplighters League is a fun game with many strengths," Paradox CEO Fredrik Wester commented. "Even though we see cautiously positive player numbers in subscription services, the commercial reception has been too weak, which is frankly a big disappointment. Game projects are by their nature always risky, but at the end of the day we haven’t performed at the level we should. It is painful but makes us more eager to roll up our sleeves and do better."

EA Sports FC 24 Title Update 3 Out Now — Here’s What It Does

5 months 2 weeks ago

EA Sports has released the first big post-launch patch for FC 24 and it makes some significant changes to gameplay.

The long list of patch notes is below, but it’s worth picking out a few highlights. The Pinged Pass and Pinged Pass+ PlayStyles are nerfed slightly, as is jockey turning speed when moving at slower speeds.

There are big changes to the referee logic, which players have criticised. And here’s a fun one: “In some cases, goalkeepers did not celebrate passionately in some scenes after making a significant save.” Come on keepers, let everyone know how much it all means to you!

Here are the EA Sports FC 24 Title Update 3 patch notes in full:

Modified Microsoft/ABK deal will reportedly avoid further EU probe

The European Commission is unlikely to demand further investigation into Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard following modifications the Xbox firm made to appease UK regulators.

That's according to Bloomberg, which reported that the EC has concluded these changes do no warrant putting the deal through another approvals process, according to people familiar with the deal.

Assassin's Creed Mirage player numbers "in line" with Origins, Odyssey

5 months 2 weeks ago

Ubisoft seems happy with Assassin's Creed Mirage, which it says has similar play numbers at launch as recent games such as Origins and Odyssey.

This is positive, as both Origins and Odyssey were far bigger and costlier projects, whereas Mirage is - by design - more focused.

2020's Assassin's Creed Valhalla remains the biggest Assassin's Creed launch in the series to date.

Mortal Kombat 1 Nintendo Switch Patch Claims Visual Improvements

5 months 2 weeks ago

The heavily criticised Nintendo Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1 has its first post-launch patch, which claims to address a number of issues with the game.

The Nintendo Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1 became the butt of many internet jokes for its low-quality visuals, prompting NetherRealm development chief Ed Boon to promise to improve the quality of the game.

IGN’s review of the current-gen version of Mortal Kombat 1 returned an 8/10, but IGN’s review of the Switch version, ported by Shiver Entertainment and Saber Interactive, came back with a 3/10. “Mortal Kombat 1 proves to be too much for the Switch's dated hardware,” we said. “The load times are egregious, and there are numerous bugs plaguing both graphics and gameplay, making for a poor quality port of a great game that's all around aggravating to play.”

The patch for Mortal Kombat 1 on Nintendo Switch addresses some of these high-profile issues, while adding the MIA Season 1 of Invasions mode to the game. The Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1 launched with only the tutorial stage of the Invasions mode, prompting complaints from customers.

Here are the patch notes for Mortal Kombat 1 on Nintendo Switch:

Among Us mushroom-filled map The Fungle arrives this month

5 months 2 weeks ago

Among Us' murderous beans are about to see themselves faced with a whole new map, and it is full of secrets, deceit and mushrooms (the most evil of pizza toppings, in my opinion). That's right, Among Us is about to become among fungus.

The Fungle, as it is known, will be available across all platforms as part of a free update. It promises players the chance to immerse their Impostors and Crewmates in a "weird mushroom jungle". Are InnerSloth putting the fun in fungal? Well, we don't have long until we can find out, as this map launches in just a couple of weeks time, on 24th October.

You can see a little teaser for what mushroom-filled chaos is in store via the video below.

Saltsea Chronicles review: an enthralling high seas mystery adventure

5 months 2 weeks ago

Whereas most games begin by getting you into the action as quickly as possible, Saltsea Chronicles opens with a quick note about its save system. It's a small, but important detail in this story-driven adventure game, as throughout its nine-to-ten-hour run time, you'll be faced with various decisions about where your crew of post-apocalyptic drifters will explore next, as they set sail in search of their missing captain Maja. By choosing one island at the end of every chapter, you'll naturally miss out on visiting another - and with 14 locales to explore in total in the Saltsea archipelago (and only 12 chapters to do it in), each playthrough has the potential to end up being quite different from the last.

But up front it tells you "There are no wrong choices, only your choices" in Saltsea Chronicles, and that ultimately this is a tale about "tracing different pathways" using its clever branching save system. While you can, of course, play it through from start to finish in a single swoop, you also have the option to purloin its additional save slots to take those roads less travelled (presented here as delightful, wiggling seaweed tendrils), and all without overwriting your existing adventure. Immediately, that sense of FOMO is dispelled, and instead of worrying about 'seeing everything' or making sure you get a 'good' playthrough, you can simply enjoy its enthralling tale of high seas soap opera, curious exploration, and the knotty drama that comes with trying to forge connections in an increasingly fragmented world. It's a journey well worth taking, even if what lies at the end of it didn't quite come together in the way I'd hoped.

Saltsea Chronicles review - a dreamy adventure that contains multitudes

5 months 2 weeks ago

Don't call me Ishmael. Today, you can call me the whole rabbling cast of the Pequod. This is the beautiful, improbable conceit at the heart of Saltsea Chronicles, because it's a game in which you put to sea not as a sailor but as a crew. And it's a crew that's already hurting, anxious and uncertain of things. A crewmate has disappeared without warning. Where did they go? Who took them, and why? The horizon calls.

Saltsea is set in a world that floats on the flooded remains of a prior world - maybe even our world. If so, were we good ancestors? Below the waves are strange creatures and old buildings that once claimed to scrape the sky, all threaded with skate parks of coral and ornamental fronds of disco kelp. Above? Above is everything that has survived, and has collapsed over time, and has had new thinking and new communities scribbled over the top and bolted onto the edges. One island here is a submerged ocean liner, another is clearly cobbled together from flotsam.

I just looked flotsam up: debris in the water that was not deliberately thrown overboard. That's a lovely definition, and a lovely way of looking at the archipelago on which Saltsea is set. Here is a place that was inherited by accident, and the things the people who live there now love and value are the results, in part, of the granular erosion performed by time. It's a world built of bits and pieces that have been made to fit, and which have been giving new meanings. God, I love it.

Last Chance on This Refurb Xbox Series X for Just $399 During Prime Day

5 months 2 weeks ago

Prime Day 2 ends today, which means this is your last opportunity to secure this refurbished Xbox Series X gaming console for just $399.99. Amazon appears to have introduced this specific SKU for Prime Day, as there are little to no user reviews associated with it. The product is both shipped and sold by Amazon, and one of the product images displays official recertified Xbox packaging.

This is a Microsoft Certified Refurbished console, which would entail a 90-day Xbox warranty. This means you can expect it to look and function nearly like new. In case the product doesn't meet your expectations, it's reassuring to know that Amazon provides a 30-day return policy.

Xbox Series X (Refurb) for Just $399.99

The Xbox Series X is a current generation system able to drive 4K games at up to a glorious 120fps. It is technically a more powerful system than the PS5 and games that are compatible with both consoles usually perform better on the Xbox console. Compared to the $300 Xbox Series S, the X features more powerful hardware to enable it to run games in 4K (the Xbox Series S runs games at 1440p).

The Xbox Series X also has a disc drive that can play 4K Blu-ray movies and physical game media. It is also equipped with a 1TB SSD. The capacity can be increased with either the Seagate or WD expansion cards, which happen to be on sale for $124.99 and $129.99 respectively for the 1TB sizes for Prime Day.

Tales of Destiny Leon Magnus Figure Poses Dramatically

5 months 2 weeks ago

Tales of Destiny Leon figure

A 1/7 figure of Leon Magnus from Tales of Destiny is now open for pre-order via sites such as AmiAmi. Right now, he costs 24,980 JPY (around $167.30). He’ll come out some time in July 2024, and AmiAmi offers international shipping.

The figure has a very dynamic pose, with Leon posing with his twin swords. It uses the Remake version of his character, since Leon in the original game did not double wield like this. Namco only altered his fighting style in the remake to bring him closer to his appearance as Judas in Tales of Destiny 2. Because of the way the blue resin forms an arc around him, it looks like he’s in the middle of using a move like Crescent Strike.

You can check out more pictures of the Leon Magnus figure from AmiAmi here:

In summary, the studio plans on addressing three major bugs: the bug in HQ, audio hitching while loading, and the Ramen Shop quest. However, because patches for the Switch need to wait for Nintendo to test and approve of them, it might take a while to release them for the public.

Like a Dragon Gaiden Sake is Based on Kiryu

5 months 2 weeks ago

like a dragon gaiden sake

The Kamotsuru Sake Brewing Company in Hiroshima is teaming up with Sega and Nexus to release a commemorative sake for the launch of Like a Dragon Gaiden. The wine is a daiginjo, which is usually the best sake from a brewery. The collectible drink costs 5500 JPY ($36.85) and will be released on November 9, 2023.

The sake, which is fittingly called the “Dragon of Dojima,” comes in a box that Kamotsuru made in Kiryu’s image. It has a “chic” and “expensive-looking” black design to express Kiryu’s cool and strong-willed personality. As for the wine itself, it uses Hiroshima rice and water from subterranean rivers in the Kamotsuru mountains. According to Sake Tsunagi, which sells it, it has a light and mild flavor that goes well with food.

NHL 24 Review

5 months 2 weeks ago

If I had to describe the NHL series between NHL 20 and NHL 23 in one word, it would be “stale.” Freshening up a formula between annual releases is definitely something every sports franchise has to struggle with, but EA’s hockey series in particular has been in a real slump. NHL 24, thankfully, is not that: it breaks the cycle and reinvigorates the on-ice action with some meaningful new ideas and significantly harder-hitting body checks. Unfortunately, while the gameplay feels updated, not much is done with it – the collection of modes available feels as standard as ever.

What finally brings the thrills back to hockey this year is the new Sustained Pressure system. When the offensive team stays in the attacking zone, they’ll slowly build up a pressure gauge. Once the gauge is full, they’ll gain a boost to passing accuracy and speed while the defense has to deal with faster stamina depletion. This adds a layer of excitement the series has been needing for a long time.

Smartly playing into this cycle of exhaustion and using it to your advantage can lead to a true sense of urgency in crucial make-or-break moments. There’s no denying that the new Exhaust Engine heavily favors the offensive team, but it’s not necessarily as overpowered as it sounds because it does take time for the pressure gauge to fill, giving the defense time to head it off, and the effect is temporary. There’s just nothing that seems to balance out the debuffs that the defense has to contend with.

Bad news: it ends at midnight Pacific time, so you’re running out of time to pick up whatever you have your eye on. If you’re interested in deals that won’t cost an arm and a leg, we have you covered below, with the most popular deals under $30. Let’s dive in.

Ghost of Tsushima for $29.99

If you missed out on this one at launch, now is the perfect time to pick it up. This is an open-world Samurai game that has you wandering through truly breathtaking environments and engaging in exciting sword fights against invading forces. This director's cut comes with the full game, the Iki Island expansion, and the online co-op mode.

Azul Board Game for $19.19

Some board games are about conquering the entire world. Others are about building tile mosaics. Azul is the latter, a game about creating surprisingly beautiful designs, in a semi-competitive way. Hololive English Council Is Now Hololive English Promise

Hololive English Council Now Hololive English Promise

Cover announced that its unit of Vtubers formerly named Hololive English Council will now include IRyS and become Hololive English Promise. The company is considering this a new unit, but it will consist of four talents from the original group. In addition, the VSinger project Project:HOPE closed. IRyS officially belongs to this new group instead as of October 8, 2023.

The five Vtubers in Hololive English Promise are IRyS, Ceres Fauna, Ouro Kronii, Nanashi Mumei, and Hakos Baelz. Fans of the original Hololive English Council may recognize that Tsukumo Sana is excluded from Hololive English Promise, as she graduated from her Vtuber activities in late July 2022. The idea is that this new group brings with it a brand-new concept separate from the Council’s original idea of observing humans from a distance.

EU reportedly won't require fresh probe into Microsoft's revised Activision Blizzard deal

5 months 2 weeks ago

It's looking increasingly likely Microsoft's proposed $69bn USD acquisition of Activision Blizzard will have cleared its final hurdle if - as is widely expected - UK regulators approve the revised deal later this week; it's being reported EU regulators won't require an investigation into the revised terms, clearing the way for the acquisition to conclude.

The European Commission approved Microsoft's original acquisition proposal back in May after successfully securing a number of concessions to lessen the deal's potential impact on the emerging cloud gaming market. However, Microsoft was forced to submit a revised proposal after the deal was blocked by the UK's Competition and Markets Authority.

These revised terms - which will give Ubisoft exclusive control of streaming rights for Activision's titles outside of the EU - were provisionally approved by the CMA in September, and the regulator is expected to formally approve the deal this Friday, 13th October.

Dead Island 2 Story Expansion Pits Players Against A Malibu Cult Next Month

5 months 2 weeks ago

Dead Island 2 Haus

Dead Island 2 is getting its first story expansion dubbed Haus. The adventure whisks players to new locations to take on a mysterious cult while surviving that pesky zombie apocalypse.

This new storyline centers on techno-death cults hosted by its crazed leader, Konstantin, who believes such battles are the "paragon of the future." The adventure unfolds in a Malibu villa, described in a press release as a "deranged labyrinth of biomes where rational architecture is subverted by expanding narrative spaces."

Your guess is as good as ours as to what that means, but Haus features eight new cards and new weapons, such as the long-ranged K-Rossbow and the flame-spewing Hog Roaster. Developer Dambuster Studios has not posted a trailer but did release a few screenshots that you can view below.

Genshin Impact Wriothesley Trailers Show His Skills and Capacity for Mercy

HoYoVerse released a number of Genshin Impact trailers for Wriothesley, with one showing his personality and two other teasers looking at gameplay. In one, we see how the hardened official is capable of consideration and kindness when it comes to innocents. In the others, we see his Elemental Skill and Burst.

The Genshin Impact story trailer for Wriothesley deals with a sensitive subject. The Fortress of Meropide Administrator is personally dealing with a Fontaine Child Welfare Services case involving a prisoner who is about to be taken to jail. He accompanies the caseworker there as he picks up the child’s father, claiming to be a colleague and the government employee is a “friend” of the father that will care for her. They keep up the charade that he’s on business, rather than going to jail. Wriothesley then explains this was done for the child’s sake, and not for the new inmate, and tells him to be a better father.
