The Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo V2 is a perfect CPU cooler for first PC builds, and it’s on sale for Prime Big Deal Days

6 months 1 week ago

Whenever a friend asks for help in speccing out their upcoming PC build, I almost inevitably go to check if the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo V2 is in stock. Because, for lower-end and mid-range builds especially, do you truly need any other CPU cooler? The Hyper 212 Evo V2 near-perfectly balances simplicity, effectiveness, and affordability; it’s like the PC component equivalent of Charles Eames’ museum-beloved leg splint, only less stackable. More to the point, it’s down to £33 in the Amazon Prime Big Deal Days sale, equalling its lowest price of 2023 thus far.

Full extent of Team17 cuts threaten third of the company - sources

6 months 1 week ago

Team17 is poised to lay off up to 91 people - a third of the company - as part of its major restructuring programme, Eurogamer can reveal.

The publisher of Worms, Dredge and Hell Let Loose confirmed it was planning to make redundancies earlier this month, after Eurogamer broke news that extensive cuts were being made to Team17's QA department in favour of outsourcing work elsewhere.

But the job losses go much further than those at risk in QA, Eurogamer understands, with staff across a wide range of departments affected - including those employed in Team17's marketing, usability, customer service, IT and HR teams.

Paradox declares pulp strategy The Lamplighters League a $22m flop

6 months 1 week ago

Paradox Interactive has called its recent The Lamplighters League a "big disappointment" from a commercial perspective, admitting - just seven days after its release - the pulp strategy game is unlikely to recoup its development costs, resulting in a $22.7m USD write-down.

The Lamplighters League, which was developed by the Paradox-owned Harebrained Schemes, blends tactical turn-based action and real-time stealth in a globe-trotting adventure inspired by the classic pulp stories of the 1930s, giving players control of a disparate group of rogues as they attempt to thwart an occult-obsessed cabal known as the Banished Court.

In truth, it's a deeply uneven experience; at its best, it's a "sublimely atmospheric, richly rewarding tactical adventure" - as I wrote in my 3 out of 5 stars review - but it's too often let down by bland maps, uninspiring mission objectives, and woefully underdeveloped real-time stealth. And it's clearly failed to capture the public's imagination too.

Xbox Game Studios Could Use Board Games to Revisit Dormant Franchises

6 months 1 week ago

Microsoft could use board games to revisit dormant franchises owned by Xbox Game Studios, with Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game potentially being the first of many.

Zoo Tycoon was developed by Elite: Dangerous studio Frontier Developments and published by Microsoft Studios (the previous name for Xbox Game Studios), on November 22, 2013 for Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Speaking to Xbox Wire, Xbox Game Studios executive producer Robert Jerauld said this board game adaptation is a "prime illustration" of how Microsoft could expand its franchises that don't have video games in active development.

"It’s crucial to recognize that even if certain franchises aren’t currently undergoing active development, they can still be actively appreciated by their fans," Jerauld said.

"Zoo Tycoon serves as a prime illustration of this. It presents a valuable chance for Microsoft to extend gratitude to the dedicated and ardent Zoo Tycoon fans who have worked tirelessly to sustain the game’s enchantment. We acknowledge your dedication and deeply appreciate you."

While Jerauld didn't say if he had any other dormant franchises in mind, Xbox certainly has a wealth to choose from. These could include Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Piñata, Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Project Gotham Racing, MechAssault and plenty more. There are some bigger names that haven't seen a release in a long time, of course, but many of these currently have sequels in development at Xbox.

Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Mirage is one of the few AAA video games to feature Arabic audio and text. It's also in a smaller crowd of titles to feature classical Arabic, the language that would be prominent for the golden age of Baghdad, where the game's lead, Bassim, embarks on his adventure.

Ubisoft localization manager and cultural consultant Mohammed Alemam tells GamesIndustry.biz that the goal of localization is to capture the language's intent while staying culturally relevant.

Bowser isn't up to the tusk of wooing elephant Peach in this Super Mario Bros Wonder animation

6 months 1 week ago

Nintendo has shared a new promo for upcoming release Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and it is really quite charming.

The short video in question shows Bowser trying his best to woo Princess Peach with a single flower. She looks at him with a certain amount of scepticism, before both are distracted by the bouncy arrival of one of Super Mario Bros. Wonder's elephant power-ups. And, well, when one sees the opportunity to boost one's form into that of a trunk swinging, water spraying mammal, there really is only one thing for it.

Soon, Peach has ingested (?) the elephantine delectable and is transformed before Bowser's very eyes. He is shocked to say the least, staring at his once demure princess with an open mouth and wide eyes. But, you know what? Our spikey boy is into it. Just when it may seem that Peach - in her enlarged and now tailed form - is about to blast Bowser back to his castle with a swift burst of water, he presents her with an even bigger bunch of flowers. It is a plot twist I wasn't expecting, and it is really rather sweet.

How Oxide survived the "nightmare" of making a simultaneous-turn 4X game

6 months 1 week ago

Ara: History Untold's headline gimmick is actually a couple of centuries old. In this deceptively Civilization-esque 4X strategy game, all player turns unfold simultaneously, once you've decided what to build or research, where to move your units, and so on. As Oxide Games design director Michelle Menard tells me over Zoom, this approach takes inspiration from an ancient military simulator, Kriegsspiel, which was devised by the Prussian army officer George Leopold von Reisswitz, aka the "father of wargaming", in the mid-1800s.

"It was to train their generals, it was a legit apparatus of war, it was not for funsies," says Menard. "And they basically created this massive table that had a modular terrain system. At first they used sand, but that was kind of messy, [and so] they developed a system where they had interchangeable tiles, like hills and valleys and plateaus.

"They would build out this table, literally drop a sheet down the middle, and it'd be like, OK, you guys on each side, you can't see what the other person's doing. There was an actual game master, who was the referee who you would report your moves to. He would then re-set up the board and basically call people back into the room and be like, tada! It's the next turn - let's see what people did. Was it what you expected?"

Can Warhammer 40,000: Darktide on Xbox match the high-end PC experience?

6 months 1 week ago

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is a rare thing in modern gaming: a PC-centric release, based on unique game engine technology. When it launched last year, it certainly stood out from the crowd with detailed, evocative visuals and extremely detailed environmental artwork, along with extensive ray tracing features. However, it also arrived with a variety of performance issues, from network stability problems to frame-time hitching, even for those with higher-end kit. The game's brand-new port to Xbox Series consoles is an interesting opportunity to see just how well the game can scale to a lower-end fixed platform. Can Series X get anywhere close to a high-end PC experience, and what about Series S?

Darktide looks surprisingly impressive for a multiplayer-centric game. Most multiplayer titles sacrifice visual fidelity to achieve higher frame-rates and effectively target a wider range of potential hardware configurations, but this game is very different. For starters, there's an extreme level of environmental detail in each gameplay space.

If you take a close look at virtually any surface in Darktide, it has an intense amount of detail. The game is mostly set in indoor environments made of angular stamped metal and draped in wires and pipes, all of which hold up even at extreme close range. Everything is "greebled" or covered with nonfunctional bits of detail, that greatly enhance the complexity of the game environments. This is mostly accomplished through a mix of a high geometric density and parallax mapping - a genuine surprise for a co-op shooter.

How to be a great leader at a games company – without going bananas

6 months 1 week ago

With great power comes great responsibility. That's not only the oft-misquoted philosophy of Spider-Man's Uncle Ben, it was also the central theme of a talk by No Brakes Games' head of studio Sitara Shefta at Develop Brighton earlier this year.

Drawing on her five years of experience leading a team of 26, plus a sister studio in Lithuania, the leader of the Human Fall Flat developer shared what she believes to be the core priorities and best practices for becoming an effective manager.

"One of the worst things, in my opinion, is working somewhere you don't get to enjoy that spark, or innovation is limited," Shefta said. "I don't think that provides people with the opportunity to flourish. I knew that I wanted to create an environment where people feel happy coming into the studio – whether in person or virtually – and where people are motivated and driven about what they're doing."

Spider-Man 2 Swings Out of Screen in 3D Billboard Advertisement

6 months 1 week ago

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 3D Ad

To promote the upcoming release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, a 3D advertisement appeared on billboards in New York City and Los Angeles. The official Marvel Games social media account posted two clips of each of the 3D billboard ads in action.

The advertisement depicts Peter Parker and Miles Morales working together in the midst of a battle with the sinewy symbiote Venom. At one point in the advertisement, the 3D effect makes it appear as if Venom is propelling himself out of the screen, screeching as his long, prehensile tongue slings out toward the crowd. Shortly after, Peter and Miles follow, appearing as if they’re ready to jump out to save the actual New York City the advertisement is playing in. This is fitting, considering New York City is the setting of the game and Spider-Man’s classic neighborhood.

Tomodachi Life Trademark Renewed in Japan

6 months 1 week ago

Tomodachi Life

On September 29, 2023, Nintendo renewed the trademark for the Tomodachi Life title in Japan. The trademark registration appeared on the Chizai Watch database on October 10, 2023. The original Japanese name of the game is Tomodachi Collection: New Life.

The well-beloved social simulation series is known for incorporating user created Mii characters, and focusing on comedic and absurd interaction between them. While Nintendo has reduced the inclusion and support of Mii characters since the release of the Nintendo Switch, some titles still use the beloved characters, such as Nintendo Switch Sports.

Tomodachi Life originally released for the Nintendo 3DS on April 2013 in Japan and June 2014 overseas. It is the second title in Nintendo’s Tomodachi Collection game series, and the first one to appear outside of Japan. The original Tomodachi Collection released exclusively in Japan on June 2009 for the Nintendo DS.

Valve Drops Support for Counter-Strike 2 on Mac, Citing Low Number of Players

6 months 1 week ago

Valve has discontinued support for Counter-Strike 2 on Mac after forcing an upgrade from Counter-Strike: Global Offensive that broke the game on the platform.

Counter-Strike 2 replaced CS:GO when it launched last month with an update for all players, including those on Mac. However, this update made the original game as well as CS2 unplayable on Mac because of a lack of support from Valve.

Now, Valve has announced that it has no plans for a Mac version of Counter-Strike 2, ending years of support for Counter-Strike on the platform.

Defending the decision in a post on Steam, Valve said Counter-Strike 2 “represents the largest technical leap in CS history, and our goal is to continue to develop Counter-Strike for years to come”. Valve is ending support for older hardware, including DirectX 9 and 32-bit operating systems, as well as Mac. The company said that combined, these represented less than one percent of active CS: GO players. Moving forward, Counter-Strike 2 will exclusively support 64-bit Windows and Linux, Valve confirmed.

As a make-good, Valve is making a “legacy” version of CS:GO available to those who cannot launch CS2 with their current hardware. But support for this version of CS:GO ends January 1, 2024. Want to stand the PS5 slim vertically? It'll cost you an extra £25/$30

6 months 1 week ago

Yesterday, Sony announced its "slim" models for the regular and digital editions of PlayStation 5, but not without some extra costs being introduced with the line.

For starters, both the regular and digital PS5 slim models will come with a horizontal stand, but no base. A base is included in the box with the launch models, but if you want to stand the PS5 slim vertically, you'll need to buy a separate vertical stand (compatible with all PS5 models!) for £25, or $30.

For buyers in North America, the slim model of the digital PS5 is more expensive than the launch model, costing $450 compared to $400, despite its smaller size. The slim PS5 with a disc drive will remain at the same price of $500.

The Lamplighters League a 'Big Disappointment' for Paradox as It Confirms $22 Million Write-Down

6 months 1 week ago

Paradox Interactive has called The Lamplighters League a "big disappointment" as the company has been forced to record a $22 million write-down.

Revealed on the company's website, the write-down of 248 million Swedish Krona, or roughly $22.7 million, is essentially Paradox admitting it won't make its money back on The Lamplighters League.

"The Lamplighters League is a fun game with many strengths. Even though we see cautiously positive player numbers in subscription services, the commercial reception has been too weak, which is frankly a big disappointment," said Paradox CEO Fredrik Wester.

Game projects are by their nature always risky, but at the end of the day we haven’t performed at the level we should.

"Game projects are by their nature always risky, but at the end of the day we haven’t performed at the level we should. It is painful but makes us more eager to roll up our sleeves and do better."

The Lamplighters League launched October 3 as a mix of stealth gameplay and XCOM-style combat in a ritzy 1930's aesthetic. The "cautiously positive player numbers in subscription services" mentioned by Wester could be referring to the game's presence on Xbox Game Pass, where it arrived on its launch day.

In our 7/10 review, IGN said: "The Lamplighters League starts slow, but its mix of squad tactics, stealth, and pulp adventure soon builds momentum thanks to excellent design of both heroes and enemies."

Amazon Prime Big Deal Days: The best cheap mechanical gaming keyboard just got cheaper

6 months 1 week ago

In terms of usefulness to the average PC owner, sales events like Amazon Prime Big Deal Days aren’t just for knocking hundreds off big-ticket hardware. They can also make already-affordable kit even more of a bargain, as is the case with the Logitech G413 SE mechanical keyboard: a snip at £60.

This has been on our best gaming keyboards list for a while now, specifically for delivering all the satisfying finger-feel (and durability) of a true mechanical board with a pricing that puts it closer to high-end membrane and hybrid switch models. The G413 SE employs the bumpy 'tactile' style of mech switches, so it’s good for accurate typing, and it’s easily fast and agile enough for gaming duty as well. I actually ended up using this as my main keyboard for a while, despite having more expensive linear-switch boards piled up in a nearby cupboard, and I’d extra-extra-recommend it at this price.

Epic Bans Rocket League Item Trading, Community Calls for Boycott as Thousands Sign Petition

6 months 1 week ago

The Rocket League community is up in arms over a controversial decision to remove item trading.

Publisher Epic Games and developer Psyonix announced their intention to remove player-to-player trading from the popular car football game on December 5 at 4pm Pacific / 7pm Eastern / 12midnight UK, insisting the decision had to do with bringing Rocket League in-line with its wider policy around item shops.

“We’re making this change to align with Epic’s overall approach to game cosmetics and item shop policies, where items aren’t tradable, transferrable, or sellable,” a statement from the ‘Psyonix Team’ read.

“This opens up future plans for some Rocket League vehicles to come to other Epic games over time, supporting cross-game ownership.”

Psyonix said the trade-in system for core items, tournament items, and blueprints will let players continue trading duplicate or unwanted items to receive a random new item of higher rarity, and players will not lose any previously traded items when player-to-player trading is removed.

In the same announcement, Psyonix issued a warning to those who may consider using “fraudulent” third-party trading websites or servers. “After December 5, there will be no way to trade items with any player or between accounts,” Psyonix said. “Websites or servers advertising such services are fraudulent and have no connection to Psyonix or Epic Games.”

What if you lent someone an item? “These actions are not supported by Psyonix and all trades are considered final,” Psyonix said. “Our support team cannot help reverse trades.”

British eSports releases statement following controversial Saudi partnership

6 months 1 week ago

Earlier this week, British eSports announced a partnership with the Saudi eSports Federation. The UK's national body for competitive video gaming said this collaboration aimed to set "new standards of excellence, education and innovation throughout the world of esports". This would include a variety of endeavours between the two parties, including internships, training programs and research projects.

However, British eSports has now acknowledged this news had sparked "concern" - no doubt fuelled by Saudi Arabia's poor human rights record, which includes the criminalisation of homosexuality, fewer rights for women and the use of the death penalty. Saudi's Prince Mohammed bin Salman has also been blamed for the assassination of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi by US intelligence agencies.

As a result, British eSports has released a statement addressing issues raised by the esports community.

Disney boss urged to buy EA or a company like it, according to reports

6 months 1 week ago

The consolidation of the games industry threatens to continue apace, as rumours surface that senior Disney staff are urging CEO Bob Iger to acquire a major game company, such as Deluxe Paint and Shaq Fu publisher Electronic Arts (who also publish Battlefield and Apex Legends, if I remember correctly). Apparently, the aforesaid senior executives think Disney are losing out for merely licensing Disney properties to developers, but Iger is said to be "noncommittal".
