Devil May Cry 3

Editor’s Note: this episode was recorded before the recent Game Informer layoffs where, unfortunately, John Carson was let go from the company. This episode, along with the upcoming DmC episode, was filmed in advance and will serve as his final appearances on Video Gameography. I want to personally thank John for all of his help, and I will miss the knowledge, passion, and personality he brought to every episode. The future of Video Gameography after Season 6 is currently being determined as Game Informer reorganizes with our much-reduced staff. I will keep you updated, but please follow John on Twitter (handle posted below) to wish him well and send any job opportunities or leads his way. – Marcus Stewart

Overwatch 2 beta gets another mid-cycle patch

1 year 9 months ago

Blizzard has made further changes to its Overwatch 2 hero roster in another beta mid-cycle patch.

Six more heroes have had their abilities tweaked in a bid to rebalance the game ahead of its formal release, including Doomfist, Junker Queen, Orisa, Sojourn, Symmetra, and Zenyatta.

Doomfist's changes include minimum damage required to empower Rocket Punch reduced from 100 to 90 damage, and the movement speed penalty while blocking reduced from 50 to 35 per cent. They will also now deal damage to all enemies knocked back "instead of only the first target impacted".

Fall Guys' developer Mediatonic apologises for a bug that "auto-purchases" premium items

1 year 9 months ago

Mediatonic has apologised for a bug that was causing players to make "accidental" premium purchases in Fall Guys.

The issue first popped up on the game's subreddit, with dozens of players complaining that items had been "auto-purchased" when previewing them in Fall Guys' in-game store.

Other issues included Show Bucks going mysteriously missing, hidden key bindings triggering purchases, items being switched after selection, and "a lot of players" finding that they inexplicably have "less currency now".

Elden Ring is still the best-selling game of 2022

1 year 9 months ago

Elden Ring is the best-selling game of 2022.

Research firm NPD Group - which originally asserted Elden Ring was one of the top 10 best-selling games in history before retracting the claim due to "incomplete data" - reports in an updated statement that From Software's action RPG has "placed first in dollar sales in four of its first five months in market", is the best-selling game of June 2022, and remains "the best-selling game of 2022 year to date".

"Elden Ring repeated as the best-selling game of the month, and it remains the best-selling game of 2022 year to date," NPD said in the revised statement. "Elden Ring has placed first in dollar sales in four of its first five months in market."

Bungie is now "officially" part of the "PlayStation family"

1 year 9 months ago

Sony has confirmed its acquisition of Bungie is now complete.

Sony announced it would buy Bungie for $3.6bn back in February. At the time, Sony boss Jim Ryan stated the purchase was "an important step in [Sony's] strategy to expand the reach of PlayStation to a much wider audience".

Despite a probe by the FTC that sought to review "the latest example of how aggressive the agency is becoming in reviewing mergers", the agreement has now formally "closed" and Sony has posted across its social media channels to "officially" welcome Bungie to "the PlayStation family".

Loopmancer is Blade Runner, if Blade Runner was really concerned about how you were investing your pocket money

1 year 9 months ago

I'm not too far into Loopmancer, but I'm loving it. It's a beautiful 2D roguelite mounted in a glorious 3D cyberpunk world. You have great wonderfully nasty weapons, the controls are swift and precise, and the polish fails at the most charming moments - your character's hair is one, and the pleasantly stilted swearing of your enemies is another.

But there's already something about it that I am really becoming obsessed by. The pocket money. Downed enemies drop money for you to collect, money which you too will lose if you have it on you when you die. So instead, it's imperative that you invest it. Loopmancer: stylish, violent, and impressively prudent.

Luckily for us, you're investing your money in stylish violence. Scattered around the game's levels are terminals that allow you to put your money towards unlocking the fancier parts of the game's arsenal. Whenever I come across one of these terminals, even if it's a basic grenade I doubt I'll use, I end up dropping all my cash into it, because this is a roguelite and I lose my cash when I die, and - crucially - I have to assume I'll die pretty soon.

Rare delays Sea of Thieves' long-awaited Captaincy Update into August

1 year 9 months ago

Sea of Thieves' long-long-long-awaited Captaincy Update, first discussed prior to the game's release all the way back in 2018, will miss its planned launch later this month and is now due to arrive alongside Season Seven on 4th August.

In its originally envisaged 2018 guise, the Captaincy Update was an early victim of Sea of Thieves' rocky launch, with Rare ultimately making the decision to place it "on the back burner" while it refocused its development plans. Most assumed it was lost to time after that, but, to everyone's surprise, it suddenly resurfaced during Microsoft's not-E3 showcase this June.

This new iteration of Captaincy follows the same basic premise of the originally teased update, introducing a host of new features designed around the idea of becoming the captain of your own distinctive vessel. These will include the ability to name your ship, decorate its cabin, earn unique rewards, make use of special new cash-in points across the ocean, and more.

What are we all playing this weekend?

1 year 9 months ago

I know it's trite to talk about the weather but jesus, the weather! One day, fun remarks like this will seem as on-the-nose as expository newspaper headlines and graffiti in zombie films have seemed during the pandemic. What a thrill to live during some bona fide history. So to casually sweep that under the rug with no further thought or action (as genre conventions demand), why not tell me what you're playing this weekend? Here's what we're clicking on!

Sony Has Completed Its $3.7 Billion Deal to Acquire Bungie and Welcome It Into the PlayStation Family

1 year 9 months ago

Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially completed its $3.7 billion deal to acquire Bungie - the studio behind Destiny and every Halo game up to Halo: Reach - and has welcomed it into the PlayStation family.

PlayStation shared the news on Twitter, saying, "the agreement to acquire Bungie has closed. So now we can officially say... welcome to the PlayStation family, Bungie!"

Bungie also shared some words to mark the occasion and expressed how excited it is to "join the incredible team at PlayStation."

"We are proud to officially join the incredible team at PlayStation, we are excited for the future of our company, and we are inspired to bring together players from all over the world to form lasting friendships and memories," Bungie wrote. "Per Audacia ad Astra!"

Sony announced that it was going to acquire Bungie in February 2022 for $3.6 billion, but the SEC filing for the completed deal from July 15 notes that the total price was "approximately $3.7 billion."

When the deal was made public, Bungie confirmed that it will be run as "an independent subsidiary" of SIE and will remain a multiplatform studio with the option to "self-publish and reach players where they choose to play."

Friday 'Nite: The 10 Most Important Characters In The Story

1 year 9 months ago

Friday 'Nite is a weekly Fortnite column in which Mark Delaney takes a closer look at current events in the wide world of Fortnite, with a special emphasis on the game's plot, characters, and lore.

The Fortnite story is an ever-changing and unpredictable adventure full of timeloops, kaiju battles, hostile invasions from Marvel baddies, and the more-than-occasional dancing banana. Epic loves to stay tight-lipped on the official plot, which leaves the community of players, writers, and YouTubers to fill in the gaps to the best of their abilities. While some of the story comes to us as merely our best guesswork, other aspects of the story are considered canon. The game's massive cast of characters is always a point of emphasis. What are their motivations? Where did they come from? How come that one looks like a tree?

In this updated feature for 2022, we're taking a fresh look at the 10 most important characters in Fortnite lore. We last published this list in November 2021, and as you can see below, there's been a lot of movement based on characters arriving on the scene, disappearing, or even dying off. We'll continue to revisit the Fortnite story and rank the most important Fortnite characters, so bookmark this page so you don't miss a story beat.

The Sims 4 Adds Sexual Orientation As a Feature

1 year 9 months ago

While The Sims series has always allowed players' characters to romance Sims of the same gender, players have never been able to designate sexual and romantic attractions for their Sims. An upcoming update to The Sims 4, however, is set to change that for the first time.

Today, Maxis announced a sexual orientation feature for the game's Create A Sim screen, which will roll out in the next free base game update alongside the High School Years Expansion Pack.

The feature, which appears as a menu next to the gender options, allows players to customize three aspects of their Sims' orientations: what genders their Sim is romantically attracted to, if their Sim might be interested in exploring attraction to other genders, and what genders their Sim is sexually attracted to (or, in Sim terms, "interested in WooHoo with").

While this feature currently only allows players to select binary genders due to technical restrictions, the team pointed out that they'll eventually "expand this to include additional gender identities that we don't have at this time."

The Tomorrow Children: Phoenix Edition PS5 Preview - A Cult-Classic Returns

1 year 9 months ago

With its gorgeous Soviet Union inspired fantasy visuals, social gameplay systems, and hazy late-night electronic soundtrack, the original PlayStation 4 version of The Tomorrow Children stood out as a strange but special game.

Unfortunately, the thoughtful and immersive game envisioned by developer Q-Games was sullied by poorly implemented free-to-play mechanics and a confusing onboarding that left many players scratching their heads. But those who loved it really loved it, prompting Q-Games to buy the license back from Sony for an upcoming re-release on PS4 and PS5. And after spending a few hours with the newly overhauled PS5 version – fittingly subtitled Phoenix Edition – it’s clear that Q-Games is not taking its fans’ devotion for granted.

The core loop of the game is essentially the same. The player takes control of a living wooden doll who must rebuild her town and restore humanity by visiting mysterious islands that appear from The Void, an empty expanse of once-human consciousness, and mining them for resources. As before, you can work together with other players via loose online connections in a similar way to Death Stranding. (The Tomorrow Children did it first, kids.)

The more you play, the more tools you can unlock for mining, along with weapons to defend your town from the invading kaiju-like monsters known as Izvergs. And for every matryoshka doll you find while out exploring, you can revive another jolly human NPC peasant to inhabit your town. It’s a game where you can work to a plan or simply lose yourself in busywork for hours at a time, your mind awash with the game’s dreamy soundtrack.

Best Fortnite Landing Spots In Chapter 3 Season 3

1 year 9 months ago

A new map means a new set of Fortnite landing spots in Chapter 3 Season 3, or at least some new considerations for your old favorites. The Reality Tree did more than add a handy new way to start a match with high-grade equipment. It transformed almost a third of the map, changing which areas are worth checking out first and where you can expect other players to be--or not to be, which is often more important. Below, we’ve listed a wide range of drop sites suitable for any occasion, whether you’re after weapons or just need a quiet spot to do some fishing.

Chonker’s Speedway

Just as in Chapter 3, Season 2, Chonker’s Speedway is still one of the best landing spots in the new season--albeit with one important caveat. The racetrack and surrounding buildings are home to plenty of loot. Most of it is fairly common, with a few exceptions, but it’s easy to fill your pockets fast with practically an entire arsenal, unlike some of the more remote locations on the map. Access to fast cars makes it easier to get away from opponents or to just cover more ground quickly.

Cuphead: How To Summon The Djimmi And Make The Game Much Easier

1 year 9 months ago

Cuphead's long-awaited Delicious Last Course DLC upped the ante of an already legendarily challenging game. With a whole new Isle to contend with, including six of the toughest enemies in the game, it's never been harder to get to the credits with every boss defeated. In addition to the challenges posed, the DLC also introduced a ton of new tools at the player's disposal, including powerful weapons, charms, and even a brand new playable character. However, one of the strongest new additions isn't something you can buy at Porkrind's Emporium. Here's how to make your wish come true and double your HP with the Djimmi.

How to summon the Djimmi in Cuphead

The Djimmi will grant you infinite wishes once you've beaten the game, but only three on your first play through.

Summoning the Djimmi is quick and easy and can be done from the very start of the game. All you need to do is stand in one place on the map and run in a tight circle. After a brief moment, the Djimmi will appear and announce, "You've freed the Djimmi!" With that, you'll double your HP, and will have a six hearts baseline until you defeat your next boss (you can go even higher with the right charms equipped).

Nickmercs Rips Halo Infinite Developer 343 Industries and the State of the Game

1 year 9 months ago

It’s no secret that the Halo community is hurting. 343 Industries’ latest entry received a hefty delay in order to get the game up to speed just for it to launch extremely devoid of content. The game’s multiplayer portion released as a free-to-play entry back in November with aspirations to mirror the success of similar free-to-play titles such as Fortnite. Fast forward 8 months later, and the game is only in its second season after a six-month first season.

Needless to say, many fans are very upset and have publicly called out if 343 is up to the challenge of making Halo the flagship title it used to be. One of the most influential critics is none other than FaZe Clan co-owner and powerhouse Twitch streamer, Nicholas “Nickmercs” Kolcheff.

On a recent stream, Nickmercs heavily criticized the state of Halo Infinite as well as calling out 343’s lack of care for the title and the Halo community. Nick also went on to mention that the community could’ve been playing a Halo battle royale: the one that’s been rumored for quite some time.

What You Can Unlock In Sonic Frontiers' Skill Tree

1 year 9 months ago

Sonic Frontiers

Sonic Frontiers looks to evolve the combat of the long-running franchise in meaningful and unprecedented ways. Part of that process involves introducing a skill tree, the first of its kind within the franchise. Sonic has long had adventures that involve him unlocking new abilities, but by introducing a full skill tree in Frontiers, Sonic Team hopes to further enhance what it claims will be the longest mainline game in franchise history.

"Combat with enemies is an important part of Sonic Frontiers," Sonic Team creative officer Takashi Iizuka says. "Starting out with Sonic at full power would make the combat simple and repetitive, so we made it so the player gradually unlocks Sonic's abilities through the skill tree. The player collects the points necessary to unlock skills by defeating enemies and exploring the island, so they can unlock more powerful skills by playing longer."

Sims 4 introducing sexual orientation in free update later this month

1 year 9 months ago

Up until now, The Sims 4 has presented itself as an enthusisatically flexi-sexual world, where every Sim is open to at least considering all attempts to woo and WooHoo. That'll soon change, however, with an imminent update giving players the opportunity to define their Sims' sexual orientations in a way that better reflects the real world.

Arriving as part of a free update accompanying The Sims 4's next major expansion, High School Years, which launches on 28th July, the feature will add a new Sexual Orientation tab to the game's Create-A-Sim screen. Here, player will have the opportunity to tinker with three settings that will impact how Sims interact with others in-game.

The first option enables players to choose whether a Sim is romantically attracted to men, women, both, or neither, meaning they'll turn down romantic advances made by Sims that don't fit that profile. Incidentally, while discussing the feature during its latest livestream, developer Maxis explained it's currently using gender binary terms (despite making strides to add more inclusive pronoun options) for technical reasons relating to how The Sims 4, which is built on eight-year-old architecture, currently handles gender behind the scenes. It notes, however, that it hopes to expand the feature to encompass more gender identities over time.

The Halo Infinite Co-Op Beta Is Live

1 year 9 months ago

After a long wait, Halo fans can finally try out Halo Infinite's campaign in co-op with the game's new beta. Today, the official Halo Twitter account announced the beta's launch, saying you can squad up with your friends to take on the Banished together on Zeta Halo.

The beta also includes a feature many Halo fans wanted in Infinite's campaign: Mission Replay. In Halo Infinite, once you complete a mission, there was no way to return to it later for Skull hunting, or just for fun. In the beta, 343 has implemented a system through the game's map to replay missions you've already completed.

As we learned a couple weeks back, the beta includes Halo Infinite's entire campaign, and the beta is available to all Xbox Game Pass subscribers and anyone that owns Halo Infinite. To try it out, you'll need to join the Xbox Insider Program.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Gets New Video About Setting, Characters, & More

1 year 9 months ago

Following the recent reveal of the RPG Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, Owlcat Games released a new dev diary video.

In the video, narrative lead Olga Kellner provides an overview of the setting and the characters that we’ll play and encounter.

We learn more about who the Rogue Trader is (veteran fans will remember that “Rogue Trader” is actually the subtitle of the very first Warhammer 40,000 edition, published by Games Workshop in 1987), alongside some of the many companions we’ll meet in our adventurers.

Among them we see a Seneschal, a psyker, a battle sister, a Space Wolf space marine, an eldar ranger, and a Magos of the Adeptus Mechanicus.

It appears that we’ll have a lot of freedom on how to play our very own Rogue Trader, which isn’t surprising considering that Owlcat is the developer behind the Pathfinder video games, which is certainly a great pedigree.

You can check out the video below.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is coming to PC at some point in the future, but the alpha is supposed to launch in 2022. To gain access to alpha and beta, fans can already purchase one of the several Founder’s Pack options.

How Street Fighter 2 Shaped The Console Wars

1 year 9 months ago

In the contentious console war between Nintendo and Sega's 16-bit systems, most of the attention was focused on the elements that the two warring factions directly controlled: the hardware and first-party games, and especially the dueling mascots, Mario and Sonic. But third-party support varied wildly at the time, with entire series like Final Fantasy pledging loyalty to just one of the two major competitors. And there was hardly any single game that made a bigger impact than Street Fighter 2. Today marks the 30th anniversary of the first Street Fighter 2 home release on the Super NES--a move that would shape the console competition, and the industry, for years to come.

It's hard to overstate how massive a hit Street Fighter 2 was when it first hit arcades. By 1991, coin-operated arcades were starting to dim, falling short of the heyday of the golden age of arcades in the 1980s. The arrival of Street Fighter 2 heralded a revitalization of the arcade industry, driving foot traffic to arcades and attracting countless imitators. It quickly created a burgeoning competitive scene, with each arcade community knowing its own top players and others placing their quarters on the edge of the box to challenge the champs. It also, not surprisingly, dominated the cash flowing into the arcade business. David Snook, editor of the arcade trade magazine Coin Slot, estimated that Street Fighter 2 accounted for around 60% of the total coin-op market in a 1993 edition of the UK magazine Mega. Street Fighter 2 was one of the biggest games ever made in a genre with few rivals.

Guess The Game Is A New Wordle/Framed-Style Challenge About Video Games

1 year 9 months ago

The Wordle phenomenon has hit video games trivia with GuessThe.Game. Like Framed or Heardle, it tasks players with identifying a media object with individual hints, which unlock with every guess. After six guesses, you’re out of luck.

GuessThe.Game works similarly to Framed in that it displays progressively obvious visual clues. However, unlike its forebearer, it shows only parts of a frame at first. Later guesses show more distinct and larger parts of different frames, eventually revealing complete images. It also displays facts about the game-in-question after the first image. This starts with the Metacritic score and then proceeds through the original platform, genre, release date, and developer.

No Caption Provided

It’s also similar to Framed in that the answer can become very obvious after the fourth image. It’s unlikely that you won’t guess it at all unless you are completely unfamiliar with the game, so skill is shown in figuring it out as early as possible. Thereby, GuessThe.Game is often about identifying small art assets, UI elements, or graphical effects rather than being able to recognize specific characters or big moments.

Halo Infinite Online Campaign Co-Op Test Begins Today, Mission Replay Feature Also Added

1 year 9 months ago

Halo Infinite's online campaign co-op test is out now, giving fans an early look at one of the game's most long-awaited features that wasn't there at launch. As announced previously, players need to register for the free Halo Insider program to get in across Xbox and PC.

The network test runs through Monday, August 1, so players will have a good amount of time to test it out. Developer 343 called on fans to file bug reports regarding any issues they encounter to help the studio smooth out the experience before the feature rolls out for all players.

To access the beta test, players can navigate to the Xbox Insider Hub (or download it if need be) and select "Previews" on the left side of the screen. From there, players will see "Halo Infinite - Insider." Joining that will take players to the Store page for the network test client. Once the download finishes, the game will be included in the game library.

As announced previously, this is a totally separate version of Halo Infinite, so your existing save will not transfer, nor will any progress from the test move back to your standard save.

Newest Zenless Zone Zero Character is Corin Wickes

1 year 9 months ago

corrin zenless zone zero

HoYoVerse released three tweets introducing Corin Wickes, a maid who will appear as a character in the upcoming game Zenless Zone Zero. Corin is a maid who is part of Victoria Housekeeping Co. From her quotes and character introduction, she is gentle and humble, but does not seem to realize how strong she is. This strength is likely a reference to her combat prowess.

Some basic information on Corin includes her age (16), blood type (Rh-negative), and star sign (Gemini). She likes to clean, which means that her job as a maid is perfect for her. According to customer feedback, Corin is very good at cleaning as well. However, her timid attitude and chainsaw cost her several stars. In her quote, she seems a little off, such as suggesting using a chainsaw or ax to peel an apple.

Her Japanese voice actress is Hiromi Igarashi. Previous roles from Igarashi include Futaba Anzu from The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls, Jack-O’ from Guilty Gear, and Symonne from Tales of Zestiria. It is unknown who will provide the English voice of Corin, assuming there will be an English dub for Zenless Zone Zero.

Sea Of Thieves Season 7 Delayed Slightly, Now Coming In August

1 year 9 months ago

Sea of Thieves Season 7 is on the way, but it won't come into port on schedule. Developer Rare has announced that Season 7 will now arrive on August 4. This is a small delay from the previously announced July 21 release date for Season 7.

The big-ticket item in Season 7 is "Captaincy," which, as its name suggests, allows players to become captains of a ship. Season 7 also allows players to name their ship.

Explaining the delay, Rare said in a blog post that it will spend the additional time working on polish and quality.

"As we started getting closer to the originally stated release date, it became apparent that things were coming in hotter than we liked and there was a real risk of not delivering to the quality and polish we expect, as well as putting undue pressure across the team to get it all over the line," Rare said. "We understand this will be disappointing for those of you who are eagerly awaiting this update, and we appreciate your patience with this change."

Season 6 began in March, so fans have been waiting for some time for the next season. Also coming to Sea of Thieves in August is the next Adventure, A Hunter's Cry, which launches on August 18. More details on this will apparently be announced later.

"Running Sea of Thieves as an ongoing live experience is still a journey where we learn new things every day, but we will always consider what is the best course of action for the players and our development team alike," Rare said. "We believe the decision to shift this release is absolutely the right one to deliver the best experience for you all, while ensuring we continue to operate with a healthy and sustainable approach."
