Horizon Forbidden West Wins Best Game at Develop: Star Award 2022; Full List of Winners Inside

1 year 10 months ago

Horizon Forbidden West has already managed to pick up an award for Best Game as well as Best Visual Art at this year’s Develop: Star Awards despite only releasing in February.

The award ceremony took place yesterday as part of Develop: Brighton which brings game developers and industry veterans together to network and learn from each other. The awards actually operate a little bit differently compared to many other similar events in the sense that the winner of each award is decided by developers.

This was clearly a huge win for Horizon developers Guerilla Games who reacted with jubilation to the news and took to Twitter to thank the industry panel and pay tribute to the developers they were up against.

Hot Drop: Apex Legends Will Use Seer's Home To Introduce Vantage And The New Divided Moon Map, Mark My Words

1 year 10 months ago

Hot Drop is GameSpot's weekly Apex Legends column, in which Jordan Ramée takes a closer look at Respawn's battle royale to provide additional insight into the game's evolution, as well as dive deeper into its episodic storytelling and characters.

Apex Legends Season 14 is coming, likely kicking off on or around August 9--a week following the conclusion of the Gaiden Event. Already, developer Respawn seems to be hinting at what may be coming with the new season, which may focus on Seer. I think Seer's home planet is the next stage for Apex Legends' story, providing the narrative backdrop for the battle royale game's next playable legend and map.

As tantalizing as the conclusion to Season 13's Quest has been--Bangalore discovered her brother started a family since they last saw each other, and Wraith learned she experimented on a "Subject 0" prior to subjecting herself to the tests that gave her powers and amnesia--it's looking like Season 14 may instead build upon the narrative threads of Season 12.

Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - The Second Age Explained

1 year 10 months ago

As the streaming wars heat up, Amazon is betting big on The Lord of the Rings. The company is spending hundreds of millions of dollars on a prequel series set long before the events of the movies. This series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, will be set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, an important time that literally reshaped the face of the planet.

If you're not familiar with the extensive backstory behind The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, don't worry. Here's everything you need to know about Middle-earth's Second Age and what it could mean for the plot of the prequel series. And check out the Rings of Power trailer right here:

The Second Age: The Basics

The fantasy universe created by J.R.R. Tolkien is much bigger than just the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings. The land of Middle-earth is part of a larger world called Arda. Over the course of several decades of work (much of which was only published posthumously), Tolkien created a detailed history of Arda, ranging from the creation of the universe all the way up to humanity's modern era. The recorded history of Arda is divided into four Ages, each of which span many hundreds or thousands of years.

MultiVersus Open Beta Begins This Month, And The Iron Giant Will Join the Fray

1 year 10 months ago

Warner Bros. crossover platform fighter MultiVersus will soon be playable once again, this time to everyone who wants to throw down. The game’s first open beta kicks off on July 26. Additionally, an early access period begins a week earlier on July 19 for anyone who participated in May’s closed alpha or received Twitch drop codes.

The open beta for the free-to-play fighter will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Online play supports cross-play and features rollback netcode. The beta will include eight maps, a variety of gameplay modes, and the same roster of characters playable during the alpha with one big addition: the Iron Giant.

The peace-loving robot from the (criminally underrated) titular animated film joins the fray, and a new trailer provides glimpses of him in action.

We still don’t know when MultiVersus will launch in full, but we’ve been mostly impressed with it so far. These tests should only help the game become better when it goes prime time.

Wordle Is Now A Physical Board Game, Preorders Are Live

1 year 10 months ago

Wordle, the popular word-guessing game owned by The New York Times, is becoming a physical board game. Hasbro is producing the game, called Worldle: The Party Game, and it's already up for preorder on Amazon.

Wordle: The Party Game plays out the same as the digital version, with players trying to guess the secret word. For the physical edition, it becomes more social, with players taking turns writing down their guesses (at least in the standard mode), with the aim of correctly guessing the word in the fewest tries.

There are four main modes of play. Classic involves simply trying to guess the word; Fast Mode challenges players to race to solve it first; Time Mode is all about solving the puzzle quickly; and Team mode has players working together to solve it.

Wordle: The Party Game can be preordered now on Amazon and other retailers for $20; it launches on October 1.

WoW: Dragonflight Alpha Launches Today, Lets Select Players Try Out Reworked Classes and A New Zone

1 year 10 months ago

Blizzard announced that phase one of the Dragonflight alpha test begins today, July 14, 2022. The World of Warcraft expansion’s alpha will let players explore the new Azure Span zone, plays as the Dracthyr Evoker, ride dragons, and test out new interface updates.

The Azure Span is a tundra area, populated by the humanoid walrus people Tuskarr, blue dragons, gnolls, and Furbolg. It’s one of the expansion’s Dragon Isles, and is inspired by the Redwoods of California, along with previous WoW zone Grizzly Hills. It’s one of the largest zones in WoW to date and offers the most dramatic elevation changes.

The alpha will also let players try both large and nitty gritty gameplay changes. Blizzard has stated that the only Dracthyr class available for now is the Evoker, but it may support more classes in the future. In other class news, the Alpha will also enable players to test out changes to the Death Knight, Druid, Hunter, Priest, and Rogue classes, including the revamped talent trees. Players will also be able to discover changes to the Alchemy and Blacksmithing professions, such as new crafting stations and professional equipment.

EA's latest Skate entry is a free-to-play live-service game

1 year 10 months ago

Fans eagerly awaited fresh news of EA's highly-anticipated new Skate game have been given their wish, but it mighn't be quite what they were expecting. EA and developer Full Circle have shared a new 18-minute video, announcing, among other things, that their long-awaited skateboarding revival will be a free-to-play live-service game.

Despite having variously been known as both Skate 4 and a Skate reboot since its development was announced in 2020, Full Circle now says the game "isn't a sequel, it's not a remake, a reboot, [or] a prequel." Instead, it's described as an "authentic evolution" of the series - one whose last mainline entry arrived 12 years ago - that reflects "where skateboarding and gaming is in the real world".

Full Circle also confirmed a final name in the form of "Skate." (that fullstop is here to stay), and a new setting in San Vansterdam - described as a sister city to previous games' San Vanelona.

This Stray Backpack Is Ridiculously Cute

1 year 10 months ago

Stray is already promising plenty of feline hijinks and cuteness when it launches next week, but Travel Cat is ensuring that your own cat can get in on the fun with some real-life branded cat travel items – a Stray-themed backpack and a harness modeled after the one worn by the game's four-legged protagonist.

Stray-themed%20bubble%20backpack

The bubble backpack, which can hold up to a 25lb cat, sports a colorful design and a Stray patch on one side. The bubble in the center allows your fluffy pal to get a good look at their surroundings while you're doing all the walking and they're doing what they do best – being lazy.

Meanwhile, the harness is a direct replica of the black and white one worn by the cat in Stray, though the listing states that it doesn't come with the game's robot companion B-12. Bummer. Even so, it also includes a 6ft nylon leash so that you can let your cat go sit in someone else's lap.

Both items are available for pre-order on the official Travel Cat website, and the first wave of shipments is estimated to go out by August 31, with a second wave expected on September 21.

Nightmare Fuel Donkey Kong Country TV Series Is Free To Watch On YouTube And Amazon

1 year 10 months ago

Like most things from 1997, the CGI-animated Donkey Kong Country TV series is a fascinating and horrifying glimpse at the past. Currently airing on Amazon Freevee and on YouTube--both ad supported--you can relive the horrors of '90s CGI, if you're brave enough. No one knows how it returned, but experts have hypothesized that a combination of someone wishing for new Donkey Kong content and a curled finger on a wish-granting monkey's paw is likely to blame.

If you're interested--or masochistic--you can tune into Amazon Freevee through this link and subject yourself to all 40 episodes. Don't say that we didn't warn you though. Alternatively, playlists for Season 1 and Season 2 can be found on YouTube.

Yes, it got worse.

Officially debuting in France first and then a year later in the US, Donkey Kong Country stars the musclehead ape as the protector of Kongo Bongo Island and the magical Crystal Coconut, which is regularly under threat from King K. Rool and his minions. Donkey is joined by members of the Kong family, and each episode tortured its viewers with songs that the main cast performed.

PlayStation Stars Rewards 'Definitely Not NFTs,' Sony Says

1 year 10 months ago

Sony has clarified that its new PlayStation Stars loyalty programme will not reward members with NFTs. Speaking to The Washington Post, vice president of network advertising, loyalty, and licensed merchandise Grace Chen made clear that the "digital collectibles" on offer were absolutely not related to the controversial non-fungible tokens.

"It's definitely not NFTs. Definitely not," Chen said. "You can't trade them or sell them. It is not leveraging any blockchain technologies and definitely not NFTs."

Sony announced PlayStation Stars earlier today as a reward points programme that will allow players to earn points with real cash value.

For completing campaigns like playing a PlayStation game, winning tournaments, or being the first person to unlock a Platinum Trophy, players will earn points they can spend in a rewards catalogue. This will include PSN wallet funds and other PlayStation Store products, but also these new digital collectibles.

The description Sony offered did make them sound a little like NFTs, as it called them "digital representations of things PlayStation fans enjoy, including figurines of beloved and iconic characters from games and other forms of entertainment, as well as cherished devices that tap into Sony’s history of innovation."

Developer Video Reveals New Skate Game Will Be Free-to-Play

1 year 10 months ago

For those hoping this Skate news would be gameplay focused, it’s on more technical things regarding development. It’s more information than spectacle. While the developer video does certain have little cutaways to gameplay, the bottom of the screen wants you to know it’s very rough footage. What you’re seeing is “Pre-Pre-Pre-Alpha gameplay”.

The first thing to know is that this isn’t considered Skate 4. Cuz Parry, the Creative Director, explains that this title isn’t a sequel. To that end, it’s not a reboot or a remake, either. This new Skate is simply just the game.

Cuz Parry announces in the video that Skate will be the complete game and they will simply build on top of it rather than follow it up with new iterations. It sounds just like it is, the new Skate will be a live-service game. But, for those concerned, it will also be free-to-play. It will also feature not only cross-play, but cross-progression across all platforms.

Also, the location is a little wacky in keeping with the series roots. The new Skate will take players to “San Vansterdam”. In Skate 1 and 2 it was San Vanelona, with Skate 3 based in Port Carverton.

You can find the rather long developer video below. For those who have been waiting the last 12 years for Skate 4 (which this technically isn’t), there’s plenty to appreciate.

Who Is the Little Girl With the Bunny in Thor: Love and Thunder?

1 year 10 months ago

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is already full of well-known stars, but sometimes, it can be the other characters that capture fans’ hearts or our attention for standing out in certain scenes. That is definitely the case for Thor: Love and Thunder. While the likes of Thor, Valkyrie, Korg, Mighty Thor, and Gorr take the limelight most of the time, the kids of Asgard are also prominently featured in many parts of the movie. If you have wondered who that little girl with the bunny is in Thor: Love and Thunder, we are here to help.

The Little Girl With the Bunny in Thor: Love and Thunder

While we do not get her name in the film, that little girl most certainly let the shadow monsters get it in Thor: Love and Thunder when given the power of Thor, firing off powerful blasts as she spun around in the air. That badass is played by none other than Taika Watiti’s daughter, Matewa Kiritapu. Her sister, Te Kainga O’Te Hinekahu is also one of the Asgardian kids kidnapped by Christian Bale’s Gorr.

Who Does Chris Hemsworth’s Daughter Play?

The family fun doesn’t stop there. Chris Hemsworth’s daughter, India, is also part of the show. However, she arguably plays the biggest part among the kids, taking on the role of Love, the daughter of Gorr that was later adopted by Thor. Needless to say, it will be exciting to see just what adventures Chris Hemsworth will have with his daughter on the big screen next time.

Fortnite Geyser Locations: Where to Use Geysers in Chapter 3 Season 3

Geyser Locations in Fortnite

There is one location on the map that’s the best when it comes to finding geysers. You’ll want to make your way to the Reality Falls area. While there are a couple scattered geysers around the Reality Tree and to the south, it’s best to avoid that popular landing area.

Sony Unveils PlayStation Stars Loyalty Program

1 year 10 months ago

PlayStation Stars

In addition to revamping PlayStation Plus, Sony has also overhauled its loyalty rewards. A new blog entry details the result, now called "PlayStation Stars." This new loyalty program is free to join and doesn't require a payment or purchase to qualify. It combines traditional rewards with the community challenges PlayStation uses to engage its fans.

Once they join, PlayStation Stars members will earn rewards by completing campaigns and activities. The activities include things like a "Monthly Check-In" that simply requires members to play a game to receive a reward. Some activities may require a member to win a tournament, earn a specific in-game trophy, or be first in their time zone to "platinum" a blockbuster title (by earning all its available Trophies).

The rewards that PlayStation Stars members can win range from loyalty points to "digital collectibles." Loyalty points are like points in many other brand reward programs and will be redeemable in a catalog for prizes. The prizes include PSN wallet funs, PlayStation Store merchandise, and more. The "digital collectibles" are new to the program. They're described as "digital representations" of things like figurines of iconic characters and PlayStation hardware.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Video Shows Off New Gameplay Footage, Details

1 year 10 months ago

It seems impossible given the franchise's decades-long history, but the Warhammer 40,000 series has not yet seen a classic role-playing video game. That is changing with Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, and developer Owlcat Games has released a new video--which GameSpot can exclusively reveal--that goes into even more detail about how players will seek glory and a whole lot of cash as the titular Rogue Trader.

As a Rogue Trader, you will be "unbound" my most common laws others must abide by, according to Owlcat, and your "decisions and deeds send ripples throughout entire star systems and change the in-game world and those who inhabit." It's what you'd expect from an honest-to-goodness classic RPG, where player-choice and consequences are a huge part of the appeal.

Because Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader features a healthy dose of turn-based combat--which would not bode well for a trader travelling alone--you'll be joined by several possible companions. These include familiar 40,000 archetypes like Battle Sisters and psykers, as well as the legendary Space Marines. How you decide to build your squad is completely up to you, however, if you favor one style of play and want to lean into it rather than have a balanced team.

"The freedom to forge your own path in a universe ripe for adventure is the main reason why we chose the Rogue Trader as our protagonist," said lead narrative designer Olga Kellner in the video. Kellner added that the game should appeal to those who are knowledge about other Warhammer 40,000 material as well as complete newcomers.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is currently in development for PC and consoles. No release date has been announced thus far.

The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki II Gets New English Trailer as Fans Wait for Localization Announcement

1 year 10 months ago

Today Clouded Leopard Entertainment released another English trailer of The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki II- Crimson Sin, but if you think that means it’s coming in English, unfortunately, that’s not the case.

Clouded Leopard Entertainment has the license to localize the latest games of the beloved Trails series for the Asian market in Traditional Chinese and Korean, but not in English.

The publisher is going to release the game for PS5 and PS4  in 2022, but western fans are still going to be left high and dry, unless they happen to understand Chinese or Korean.

That being said, since English is still spoken by many in certain Asian territories, Clouded Leopart also released a trailer in English (as they did with another a few weeks ago), and you can enjoy it below, as long as you can find this cruel tease enjoyable, considering that we’re most likely not going to play the game English for a long while.

Incidentally, the same English trailer deal was done the same back in May for The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki.

  1. Firstly, bring up your iPhone’s menu by swiping down from the top of your screen.

If you have an iPhone 8 or older, you’ll need to swipe up from the bottom of the screen.

  2. Next, quickly tap on the Airplane symbol to enable ‘Airplane Mode’.

If you do this quick enough, this will cut out all signals to and from your phone. Thus, the message that you wanted to unsend should say “Not Delivered”, which means that the message didn’t arrive to the recipient.

It also explained why it chose to go with the name "skate." as opposed to Skate 4, saying this is not a sequel, reboot, or remake but a new platform that will be built upon for years to come. This means fans shouldn't expect a Skate 5 or 10, but should instead look forward to a skateboarding game that will continue to evolve for a very long time. As they put it, it is "skate, period."

Full Circle explained a bit more about the free-to-play model skate. will implement, saying the team laid down hard ground rules when designing how it will look in regards to microtransactions. The four rules they shared are as follows;

  • No Pay to Win
  • No Map Areas Locked Behind Paywall
  • No Paid Loot Boxes
  • No Paid Gameplay Advantages

EA began recruiting playtesters for Skate in June and the team talked about how it was a tough decision to allow players to see the game in a "pre-pre-pre-alpha" state. In the end, however, they want to build this game with the fans and get feedback as early and as often as possible.

World of Warcraft's Expansions Are Graveyards of Old Features; Dragonflight Wants to Change That

1 year 10 months ago

One element of World of Warcraft that has frequently garnered criticism from its community is the growing number of discarded features that have piled up over the years: introduced for an expansion or two, and then forgotten when some new fancy thing replaces it. Looking at you, artifact weapons.

But with Dragonflight, production director Patrick Dawson says the team wants to focus more on improving existing features for the long haul rather than implementing a bunch of new stuff it will throw away later.

“That’s one of the things we really wanted to engage with, with Dragonflight, is to try and make as much of it for evergreen World of Warcraft as possible,” he says. “That’s why you see things like the HUD updates, the talent updates, and the crafting system, those are all fundamental, core things about World of Warcraft that will continue outside of Dragon Isles and beyond Dragon Isles.”

Dawson is referring to several of the key announced features of Dragonflight. It’s implementing a much more customizable HUD with an even sleeker default design that’s intended to reduce the need for addons for casual play, and a major overhaul to professions that will touch all eras of crafting, not just Dragonflight’s added recipes. It’s also bringing back talent trees, albeit much more modernized and easy to reconfigure with new features like loadouts and default talent sets for those who don’t want to look up theorycrafted guides every patch. Dawson reassures that Blizzard intends to keep the trees around for multiple expansions as opposed to its criticized tactic of adding a new power MacGuffin with its own abilities each time around.

Blizzard Is Making Big Changes to How It Tests New World of Warcraft Content

1 year 10 months ago

With World of Warcraft preparing to roll out its Dragonflight alpha this week, one notable concern is that, if Dragonflight is indeed intended to drop this year, this will be the shortest alpha/beta cycle World of Warcraft has had in recent memory. But Blizzard says this is due to a change in how it’s doing testing, and not a cause for concern.

Speaking to IGN ahead of the alpha release, production director Patrick Dawson reassures that Dragonflight will have plenty of time to cook. For one, he says, it’s been in development since before Shadowlands shipped, and the team has had about as much time working on it as they have any other expansion.

But to answer the question of the late alpha, Dawson admits that while it’s coming at an “awkward” time compared to past alphas, it’s just because Blizzard is shifting how it handles public World of Warcraft testing pretty dramatically.

“In prior alphas…we’d have a two, two-and-a-half-month-long process where different things came online in a haphazard and less structured way,” he says. “Maybe you’d get one zone, then have to wait two to three weeks, maybe even longer for the next zone. Systems wouldn’t come on at a consistent rate, that kind of stuff.

“But…one of the models we liked was how we do things like raid testing. What we do is we open up a boss for people to focus on, everybody plays that boss, we get great, focused feedback on that, and then we shut it down and move onto the next boss. Likewise, we looked at our alpha strategy, and we said, ‘How can we get that type of feedback out of an alpha?’ And the answer was, instead of having this long alpha, let’s compress it a bit and focus the feedback on specific things each and every week.”
