Lego Mighty Bowser not big enough for you? Here's a look at Nintendo's 14ft version

1 year 9 months ago

If you found yourself impressed by Lego's recently unveiled Mighty Bowser set but couldn't quite shake the feeling something was missing - say, around 13ft - then Nintendo has you covered. As part of San Diego Comic-Con, the company has constructed an absolute behemoth Mighty Bowser, measuring over 14ft tall.

The retail version of Mighty Bowser is, of course, already pretty sizeable, weighing in at 2,807 pieces, making it the largest Lego Mario adult set yet. However, the San Diego version absolutely crushes that like a sudden Thwomp to the bonce, utilising over 663,900 bricks to create its magnificent heft.

And if that wasn't enough, the 14-ft tall version is even articulated, able to move its thumbs, shift its arms, swivel its head and eyes indepently, and waggle its eyebrows for good measure. You can see the (slightly intimidating) thing in action below.

PlayStation Acquires Esports Platform Repeat.gg

1 year 9 months ago

Sony Interactive Entertainment is acquiring Repeat.gg, an esports technology platform as its amibitions in the space continue to grow.

Repeat.gg is one of biggest esports tournament platforms in the world and it helps users compete for cash prizes across online games. Furthermore, it organizes asynchronous esports tournaments that allow players to compete in games even if they aren't online at the same time.

The company can automatically keep track of players' in-game statistics and will award them based on their performance. Repeat.gg shared the news in a blog, saying it has always focused on "Esports for Everyone" and doesn't plan on stopping that mission anytime soon. So why did it agree to an acquisition?

"We will have access to more resources, game titles and technology, which will allow us to grow the team to push Repeat in directions that we had never thought would be possible," Repeat.gg's Jeff Shull wrote. "This will allow us to grow Repeat significantly over the next couple of years with plenty of new features, continuing our mission to become synonymous with esports by creating a home where everyone has a chance to compete and win."

Despite being acquired by PlayStation, Repeat.gg still plans to support "PC, mobile, and other consoles alongside PlayStation."

Obsidian's inch-high garden adventure Grounded is getting the TV treatment

1 year 9 months ago

Just as Netflix's live-action Resident Evil series finds itself flung unceremoniously onto the 'disappointment' pile, news arrives of another video game being adapted for television - this time in the form of Obsidian's inch-high garden adventure Grounded.

Released into early access back in July 2020, Grounded adapts the familiar gathering-and-crafting survival formula into a rollicking family friendly adventure inspired by the likes of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and A Bug's Life. Here, players are miniaturised and sent on a conspiracy laden escapade around their now-towering backyard, forced to fend off giant insects and other creatures as they explore, scavenge, and plot their escape.

According to Deadline, Grounded's new television adaptation will follow the same basic premise, telling the story of four friends who, the summer before high school, find their plans to elevate their social standing upended after discovering shrinking technology that makes them two inches tall. "Now the four shrunken friends must learn to survive in a towering backyard that's a jungle full of enormous predators," explains Deadline, "and hiding a vast corporate conspiracy threatening their entire town."

PlayStation To Acquire Repeat.gg

1 year 9 months ago

Video game tournament platform Repeat.gg has recently announced that it will be joining the Sony Interactive Entertainment family and will be expanding its list of supported tournaments.

The platform hosts tournaments for popular video game titles such as DotA 2, PUBG, Call of Duty: Warzone, League of Legends, and Fortnite from all around the world, for fun or for cash prizes.

While Repeat.gg has not provided a list of PlayStation games that they plan to support in the future, the organization stressed that the titles mentioned above will still be supported on the site on mobile, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X alongside PlayStation 4 and 5.

To partake in tournaments on the site, players of all ages can sign up for free, but eligibility for cash prizes is restricted to entrants over 18 years of age, or 19 for Alabama and Nebraska residents. Currently, residents of Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana, and Washington are not allowed to compete for cash prizes, as local state laws prohibit playing video games for cash prizes.

For those under 18, who would still like to compete, the platform offers its own currency that can be accrued and exchanged for other rewards, such as gift cards for Amazon, PSN, Xbox Live, League of Legends RP, and Fortnite VBucks.

This announcement isn’t the first acquisition SIE has made, as the organization announced in late March that it would be acquiring Jade Raymond’s Haven Entertainment Studios. Additionally, SIE made waves at the beginning of the year by announcing its acquisition of Destiny 2 developer Bungie.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Creative Director Steps Down

1 year 9 months ago

After nearly 16 years, Star Wars: The Old Republic creative director Charles Boyd is leaving BioWare.

Boyd has been with Star Wars: The Old Republic for its over 10-year run, but he was also very much part of the team who helped bring it to life. According to Wookiepedia, Boyd joined BioWare in 2006 and was part of a team of writers who help build the foundation of the Star Wars MMO.

His team was led by Daniel Erickson, and Boyd helped create the story for the Trooper class among other things. After Erickson left in 2012, Boyd became a lead writer alongside Hall Hood, and they worked together on the Rise of the Hutt Cartel story. He would continue on to work on many other expansions and would officially become creative director in 2016.

"Even after almost sixteen years, I still can’t fully believe how lucky I’ve been to work on Star Wars: The Old Republic," Boyd wrote. "The Star Wars galaxy has always been a huge part of my life since I was a kid, so getting to play a role in SWTOR’s growth from its initial vision to a colossal release and then an incredible live service for over a decade has been an amazing experience. The team’s passion, creativity, and dedication to this game are incredible; I don’t think I can ever fully express how much I’ve admired and appreciated working with them every single day.

"As always, there are some exciting things in the works for the future of SWTOR - storylines and planets and gameplay and characters that I can’t wait to see come to life. I’m really looking forward to experiencing them all right alongside our players.

Fall Guys gives players phallic freebie following recent cock-up

1 year 9 months ago

Fall Guys players have a phallic treat awaiting them in their inventories right now, with developer Mediatonic handing out troublingly elongated Tall Guys to one and all following its recent, widely publicised cock-up.

Fall Guys' Tall Guys dissemination comes after last week's in-game store snafu - which saw players recieving snotty customer service responses after a bug in the game caused them to auto-buy cosmetics - and arrives as part of the developer's pledge to remedy its error.

One look at the image accompanying Mediatonic's promise of a "BIG surprise" for all Fall Guys players on Twitter today makes it abundantly clear where the developer's mind was at the time, but the good (?) news is the actual in-game Tall Guys are marginally less phallic than they appear in their promo material - as you can see below.

Century: Age of Ashes for PS5 and PS4 Delayed to Later this Summer

1 year 9 months ago

Playwing announced the release of the PS5 and PS4 ports of its free-to-play multiplayer dragon dogfighting game Century: Age of Ashes has been delayed.

This comes right before the previously-announced release date, which was… tomorrow, July 19.

A new release date has not been provided, but the wait shouldn’t be excessively long, since the game will still land on PlayStation in the summer of 2022.

The press release mentioned that passing certification on PlayStation right off the back of the Xbox One release and the launch of Season 1 “A Shadow Over Skeld” is a “tough challenge” so the developers have taken the decision to take a little more time to meet their quality standards.

The team is hard at work debugging the PS5 and PS4 versions while also polishing the recently-released Xbox version.

They’re also working on the balancing kinks of Season 1 and preparing for the addition of future content. That being said, the PlayStation versions are “In the last stretch.”

If you’re unfamiliar with Century: Age of Ashes, it’s a free-to-play multiplayer dragon dogfighting game in which players are prompted to select their favorite class and dragon and then to use them to do battle in the sky.

It’s currently available for PC and Xbox and Season 1 “A Shadow Over Skeld” will be included in the PlayStation release when it launches.

It includes a cinematic story arc, a new map named “The Valkürian Sanctuary,” and the new Stormraiser class, alongside the new dragon species, the Stonesnout.

One Piece Imagination Works Luffy Goes on Sale in August

1 year 9 months ago

One Piece Imagination Works

Tamashii Nations will expand its line of premium action figures with a new Imagination Works release. After two Dragon Ball figures, Bandai is tapping the One Piece vein. That vein will yield Imagination Works Luffy, the 3rd figure in the line and first from One Piece. Revealed back in January, the finalized figure will go on sale in August 2022.

Like the Goku and Vegeta figures in the line, Imagination Works Luffy is built to 1/9 scale. That makes him a bit larger than the more common 1/12 scale. That said, a bigger scale leaves more room for detail and suits flourishes like cloth accessories. After all, flourishes are on-brand for Imagination Works. Tamashii Nations describes the brand identity as "a new pinnacle" of poseable action figures.

Imagination Works Luffy appears as he does in the later chapters of One Piece, following the time skip and well into the Wano Country story arc. The figure wears an outfit that matches Luffy's look as he and his allies ready for battles in Onigashima.

Check out some pictures of the figure in the gallery or on the product page.

Dead Cells Roadmap Outlines Boss Rush Mode and More Coming for 2023

1 year 9 months ago

Dead Cells studio Motion Twin revealed a new roadmap of content coming to the rogue-lite game throughout the rest of 2022 with a small teaser for 2023. The roadmap is brief with details on what will be coming to Dead Cells, but breaks down the release schedule into seasons for the rest of the year.

The first update slated for this summer will add a new weapon called the “panchaku,” which is two pans tied by a string, alongside a weapon and item rebalance, a legendary system rework, new outfits, and the ability to actually pet your pets. This update is already in the alpha build and currently being tested.

The next big update will add a boss rush mode sometime in the fall, where players face all bosses one after the other for rewards. The developer is planning to add a few different modes for the new feature and “potentially” a scoreboard.

As Dusk Falls Review - No Punches Pulled

1 year 9 months ago

Reviewed on: Xbox Series X/S
Platform: Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC
Publisher: Xbox Game Studios
Developer: Interior/Night
Release:
Rating: Mature

Decisions have unforeseen consequences. If one were to look for the thematic idea that links the story of As Dusk Falls with its gameplay structure, it’s hard to avoid that statement as a driving message. Life is filled with decisions big and small that shape the future, and we don’t always know how an errant word or turn down a different road might eventually conclude. Interior/Night’s emotionally rich and risky debut game isn’t interested in giving you the choice of how the character’s lives turn out; like in real life, that’s impossible to predict. Instead, the studio has crafted an intricate series of character portraits, linked them together by shared trauma, and asked the players to decide how to proceed. The nuanced narrative that unfolds is rewarding, often painful, and frequently gripping.

Zynga delays Star Wars: Hunters' worldwide launch into next year

1 year 9 months ago

There's a bit of bad news for anyone looking forward to the arrival of free-to-play arena shooter Star Wars: Hunters; developer Zynga has announced it's delaying the game's full release into 2023 in order to ensure it "meets the high expectations we are setting".

This isn't the first delay for Star Wars: Hunters, of course; announced back in February 2021 for Switch, iOS, and Android, the game was originally expected to launch later that year, but eventually saw its full release pushed into 2022. Zynga has, however, managed to soft launch the game in select territories in the interim, so there are at least some players who've had the opportunity to try it in that time.

Announcing a second delay for the game's full release on Twitter, Zynga explained, "We are working tirelessly to achieve our vision for Star Wars: Hunters. Our ambition is to create a competitive battle arena game that will entertain for years to come. To ensure we meet the high epgetation we are setting for fans globally and ourselves as developers we have made the decision to delay the worldwide launch of Star Wars: Hunters [to 2023]."

Stray review - fantastic cat exploration through a dystopian cybercity

1 year 9 months ago

Realising you’re lost is a moment of pure, cold, panic. Time inches past as thoughts tumble uncontrollably - was the last turn wrong? Why are there no signs in this town? And how did you get on this road in the first place? Because it’s definitely not on the map, and you don’t like the look of the house it's leading to. Take this feeling and now imagine you’re a fluffy little being who’s not only lost, but surrounded by large, two-legged, metallic creatures, none of whom are impressed when you knock something off a table, and you have something close to the dilemma faced by the poor protagonist cat of Stray.

On the surface, this is a game that tells a simple science-fiction of a cat who, after falling into the city’s underbelly, Lion-King-style, must escape a mysterious place with the hope of reuniting with their family. But beneath that is something more.

Still, when it comes to simply recreating the experience of being a cat, developer BlueTwelve Studio has done a wonderful job; playing as a cat feels unique, while also being surprisingly easy to master. It's all the little features, though, that truly capture a cat’s essence, from knocking items off ledges to the little pawprints you leave behind after walking through wet paint, or how the controls invert when you investigate a paper bag. None of these are purely cosmetic things, either, with each screensaver-like moment coming to serve a purpose in your journey. Meowing, for example, can attract enemies so you can trap them, while scratching at a blind can reveal a window to climb through. Even sleeping goes beyond the sheer cuteness of the moment by causing the camera to zoom out, so you get a wider view of your current location.

Xbox Game Pass Adds As Dusk Falls, Watch Dogs 2, and More in July

1 year 9 months ago

Microsoft announced the latest batch of games that will be coming to Xbox Game Pass across PC, consoles, and the cloud throughout the rest of July.

Interactive drama As Dusk Falls will be launching on the service across all three platforms starting tomorrow, July 19. The game follows several characters and the choices they make following a small Arizona town bank robbery in 1998. Our review of As Dusk Falls praised the story and overall presentation, but its actual gameplay and its ending were seemingly lacking.

Also coming to all three platforms on July 19 is Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs 2. Ubisoft has been slowly adding more titles from its catalog to Xbox Game Pass over the past few months with Assassin’s Creed Origins and Far Cry 5.

Real-time strategy Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion, racing game MotoGP 22, and Torment: Tides of Numenera will be available later this week on July 21. Playdead’s atmospheric adventure game Inside rounds out the list of new additions for the month on July 29 for PC, consoles, and cloud.

Microsoft also announced several games will be leaving Xbox Game Pass on July 31:

  • Dodgeball Academia
  • Katamari Damacy Reroll
  • Lumines Remastered
  • Omno

Resident Evil showrunner wants Lady Dimitrescu in Netflix series

1 year 9 months ago

When Resident Evil Village released last year, there was one character that quite clearly (and also quite literally) stood head and shoulders above the rest - the towering and bewitching Lady Dimitrescu. She was on everything from beach towels to buses.

But while she may not have popped up in the series prior to Village, we could yet see her again elsewhere. Andrew Dabb, showrunner for Netflix's divisive new Resident Evil series, is also a fan of Lady D, and has said he'd like to bring her to the TV adaptation in future seasons.

Speaking to Polygon, Dabb revealed: "Over the course of the series, I want to bring everything in... Left to my own devices, I want Lady D, I want the plant monster, I want it all."

Octopath Traveler Mobile Game Will Have a Triangle Strategy Character

Triangle Strategy collaboration in Octopath Traveler Champions of the Continent

A character from Triangle Strategy will appear in Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. The collaboration between Square Enix's titles will commence in the mobile game's Japanese release on July 28, 2022.

Square Enix has not specified which Triangle Strategy character will appear in Champions of the Continent. However, it has published a silhouette that looks like Serenoa Wolffort, the protagonist of the Nintendo Switch strategy RPG. All existing players will obtain this character for free. The character will appear as a 3-star character, and players will be able to raise them to a 5-star grade.

A new Japanese official live stream for Champions of the Continent will air on July 25, 2022, at 20:00 JST (7 AM ET). It will reveal more details on the Triangle Strategy collaboration content. The event will also come with a special game board that shows a different story ending based on the player's chosen route.

Triangle Strategy characters will add more to the Octopath Traveler mobile game's in-house collaborations. In March 2022, Square Enix temporarily added NieR: Automata's 2B, 9S, and A2 as guest characters that players could recruit for a limited time.

Stray Review

1 year 9 months ago

Silent protagonists are nothing new in video games, but Stray certainly pushes that concept to an interesting place. Part platformer, part traditional adventure game, this cyberpunk world full of neon-soaked robots transforms into a giant jungle gym from your perspective, which is just one foot off the ground. The concept of putting you in the paws of an average cat may be a silly one on the surface, but Stray uses that furry vehicle to tell a genuinely compelling story with some entertaining action along the way. Not all of its ideas land on their feet, but it was impossible to shake the fuzzy feeling it gave me right from the adorable opening minutes.

To be clear: you’re not a magic cat, not a mutated sci-fi cat, not some kind of sentient super cat – just a normal, cute cat, albeit one that displays the sort of intelligent awareness we all like to pretend our own cats do when we aren’t looking. The simplicity of that concept works wonderfully, especially because the fact that you are a cat doesn’t actually matter all that much to the artificial people you interact with or the things you are asked to do. The robotic denizens of this cyberpunk world generally talk to you like they would anybody else, and the only way it’s ever really relevant to the story or the action is because you can fit into tight spaces they can’t.

As an owner of two tortoiseshells myself, they've unlocked routes in our house I never knew existed, using the tiny lip of our fridge as a gateway to the top of our kitchen cupboards, bed frames as launch pads to the middle bar of our sash windows (not even the actual window sill, those daft beasts), and don't even get me started on how they managed to get onto the top of our 2cm wide shower rail that one time.

Stray, BlueTwelve Studio's cat 'em up explorathon, puts you in the paws of a similarly savvy feline protagonist. The cat itself is a marvel of digital observation, fully inhabiting all of the best cat-isms I know and love. You can scratch the backs of sofas and knead and shred carpets with alternate squeezes of the trigger buttons, meow at will, lap from dripping water bowls, topple piles of carefully stacked books and push paint cans off the edge of ledges - and, if you leave them idle long enough, they'll stretch and catch flies too tiny to be caught by the human eye. You can also play a mean game of billiards, much to the annoyance of the local robots. I wouldn't go as far as saying it loosened my jaw quite as much as when I first set eyes on Trico from The Last Guardian, all told, but I reckon if BlueTwelve had the same kind of budget and scale as GenDesign and Sony's Japan Studio did back then, then Stray's cat would be every bit the equal of that famous cat-bird-chimera.

FIFA 23 has Chelsea's Sam Kerr and PSG's Kylian Mbappé on the cover

The FIFA 23 Ultimate Edition has Chelsea's Sam Kerr and PSG's Kylian Mbappé on the cover, EA has revealed.

The inclusion of Kerr, who plays for Chelsea and Australia's women's teams and is widely considered one of the best female footballers in the world, marks the first time a female FIFA cover athlete is included on an internationally-released version of EA Sports' long-running football game.

Kerr appearing on the FIFA 23 cover wearing a Chelsea kit suggests the inclusion of Chelsea FC Women and, following that, the Women's Super League - the highest league of women's football in England - in FIFA for the first time.

Stray Review – Kitty Gone Cyber City

Stray on PC

Many of my favorite moments from games set in dystopian, cyberpunk settings are simply meandering through city streets. I’m endlessly fascinated by their dingy confines, lit up by bright neon signage advertising some product or service at odds with the air of despondency brooding from the shadows. Stray features one of the most compelling renditions of this tropey, near-future aesthetic I have ever explored, and uniquely, from the perspective of a cute cat.

French developer BlueTwelve Studio’s debut game is a puzzle platformer about unearthing the mystery of a strange, fallen metropolis. Its protagonist, an orange tabby separated from its family by a stroke of misfortune, accidentally finds itself caught up in a society of sentient robots whose society mimics a long, lost human species who lived there previously.

The companions, as they’re known, live in safe zones dotted throughout the city, constantly in fear of Zurks, a creepy and voracious species intent on eating everything in sight — flesh or metal. But these bizarre creatures aren’t all they’re hiding from; the companions live in isolated communities, sealed away from the outside world. They are convinced that conditions outside the city walls are too hostile to sustain life — the reason the cities were built hundreds of years earlier.

And yet, the chance appearance of a furry feline from beyond the walls suggests to them that life might exist after all. So begins your plight, first to make contact with companions in villages afar, and then to open the seal that has kept the city entombed for so long.
