Star Citizen Shatters Its Crowdfunding Record Again in 2020; Passes $340 Million

3 years 3 months ago

Star Citizen’s crowdfunding campaign has been unstoppable pretty much since the beginning, and 2020 was no exception.

According to backer-recorded data (confirmed via our own observation), the crowdfunding giant received $78,991,728 in pledges by its backers in 2020.

This pretty much shatters the previous yearly record achieved in 2019, which was $47,735,514.

On top of that, another milestone was reached yesterday, as the funding total passed $340 million. At the moment of this writing, it’s at a staggering $340,252,462.

This perhaps should come at no surprise, as 2020 was a strong year for almost the whole gaming industry, with the strong growth of the need for digital entertainment at home due to the pandemic.

That being said, it’s certainly undeniable that Star Citizen has gathered a sizable and dedicated fanbase willing to support its extended development.

The funding comes from pledges that grant players the ability to play the game in its alpha versions with a basic ship and additional packages that provide more advanced ships, despite the fact that those ships are gradually made available to purchase within the game with credits earned by playing.

Monthly subscriptions are also available for those who want to enjoy a deeper level of insight into the development process and receive additional goodies and discounts.

More insight about the game’s successful year and what can be expected going forward was shared by Cloud Imperium Games CEO Chris Roberts himself a couple of weeks ago.

3 years 3 months ago

Third-party add-on developer DC Designs provided another look at the upcoming F-15 Eagle package for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

This time around, we get to see something perhaps a bit less common in the peaceful skies of Microsoft’s sim, but certainly relevant to a fighter jet.

The Eagle is sent into a terrifying spin which is then recovered after quite a lot of shaking involving rather powerful G-forces.

You can watch it in action from the developer’s Facebook page, while we wait for the add-on’s release, which should come in January.

Final Fantasy XIV Boss Naoki Yoshida Teases a Thrilling and Unexpected “Ending” & More for 2021

3 years 3 months ago

Final Fantasy XIV producer and director Naoki Yoshida took to the official Lodestone website to post his traditional New Year tease.

After talking about how COVID-19 affected development, we catch a glimpse of what we can expect in 2021.

Usually, this kind of message includes cryptic hints to how the story will evolve in the year to come, so you may want to listen closely.

“So, where do we stand? The saga of Shadowbringers concluded in Patch 5.3, and hinted at the next story to come. Ah, but of course we had Patch 5.4, which then flipped the page to the “final chapter in the tale of this star.” Keep a close eye on the team’s progress this year as events build once more to a thrilling and unexpected “ending.” (To the story, not to FFXIV itself!)

Our progeny may never know
Wherefore we look unto the sky,
Nor why we dig for truths below;
We bear their scorn or watch them die.

… I’d barely finished typing this when I had an unannounced visitor─a minstrel, as he introduced himself, on a journey from faraway lands. He placed a note into my hands, and it had this poem written on it:

Who is this “resolute man”? And what’s this about his “progeny” scorning him?
I turned to put these questions to the traveler, but he was gone. Vanished, as if swallowed into a rift between worlds…”

This is not the first tease dropped by Yoshida-san over the past few days. The prolific developer wants to achieve a “leap forward” for Final Fantasy XIV this year.

Koei Tecmo Plans to Announce New Games That Will Make Fans Think “Finally!” in 2021

3 years 3 months ago

Today Famitsu published a New Year card from Koei Tecmo, and it included a rather interesting tease.

The developer and publisher from Yokohama mentions that in 2021 it’ll announce new games that will make the fans think “finally!”

Do keep in mind that the choice of image above doesn’t signify any additional detail provided by Koei Tecmo or insider information. You can most definitely interpret it as my personal wishful thinking. I’m sure I wouldn’t be the only one thinking “finally!”

Hopefully the actual announcements will not disappoint fans that have been waiting for the return of the series for a long time, but history will tell. We can only wait and see.

This isn’t the first time Koei Tecmo teases its announcements for 2021. Individual developers for specific franchises made vague mentions of their plans at the end of last year.

Among games that have already been announced, we’re waiting for more information about Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires, while the Nioh series will gets ports to PC and PS5 as well.

Of course, western fans of the Gust brand are still waiting for the release of Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy, which will come at the end of January.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Developers Tease “Surprise” in Spring

3 years 3 months ago

Today Famitsu published a New Year card from Idea Factory & Compile Heart, creators of the Hyperdimension Neptunia series.

The card mentions that the Neptunia franchise will enter a new stage in 2021 following the 10th anniversary celebrations. We can expect a surprising development in the spring, and the developers encourage fans to look forward to it.

Compile Heart just released Neptunia ReVerse for PS5 in Japan and will launch it via Idea Factory International in 2021. Yet, that’s not exactly much of an innovation for the series, since it’s a remake of a remaster.

Western fans are also waiting for Neptunia Virtual Stars for PS4 and PC, which is also coming in 2021.

If you’re interested in Neptunia ReVerse, here’s an official description.

Gamindustri – A distant world comprised of four nations, each under the divine protection of a Goddess.

Planeptune: Land of Purple Progress, ruled by Neptune
Lastation: Land of Black Regality, ruled by Noire
Lowee: Land of White Serenity, ruled by Blanc
Leanbox: Land of Green Pastures, ruled by Vert

Locked in the Console War, the four Goddesses vie for domination of the planet until Neptune is cast down and stripped of her power.

Now Neptune must fight to restore her place, but could a being known as Arfoire threaten the very world the Goddesses have sworn to protect?”

And here’s what we know of Neptunia Virtual Stars, which is a spin-off.

Microsoft Flight Simulator – Helsinki Airport Add-On Review (JustSim)

3 years 3 months ago

Nordic countries already received a sizable share of payware Microsoft Flight Simulator airports, but this time it’s Finland’s turn to shine with Helsinki-Vantaa (EFHK).

The add-on has just been released by JustSim and can be found for about $22 plus VAT on SimMarket.

It comes with its own installer so getting things ready is fairly straightforward, and you’ll be ready to visit Finland’s capital in no time at all.

Helsinki-Vantaa sees a lot of airline traffic and is the home of Finnair, so it’s a great base of operation in the Nordic countries if you fancy flying Boeings and Airbusses.

If you’d like to see what the airport looks like in detail, you can check out the in-depth flyover video below, showing Helsinki-Vantaa under every angle, lighting, and weather condition. The second video showcases an ILS approach to runway 15 with low visibility.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim Shipped 300,000 Copies; Atlus Teases Persona Anniversary Plans Again

3 years 3 months ago

Today Famitsu published a New Year card from Persona developer Atlus, which included news about 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and more.

The card reveals that Vanillaware’s critically-acclaimed game has shipped over 300,000 copies within one year of its release.

That’s certainly a great achievement for such a niche production.

The message also mentioned that in addition to Shin Megami Tensei V and Project RE: Fantasy, which are in active development, Atlus is planning a commemorative project to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Persona series in 2021. This echoes previous mentions. It’s worth mentioning that it’s not clearly specified whether this “project” is an actual game or some other kind of plan, as the wording used in Japanese is vague and could indicate either option.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is now available exclusively for PS4.

Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation Celebrates Monica’s Birthday With The Usual Microtransactions

3 years 4 months ago

It’s January 1 in Japan at the moment of this writing, which means that it’s the birthday of Monica from Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation.

Of course, the free to play PC game is “celebrating” in the usual way. If you’re familiar with the game, you know the drill.

The developer released a new paid-only costume gacha with the usual abysmal SSR chance that pretty much turns this into a money sink.

There is a 1.1% chance to draw an SSR, but the odds to get the new one are even lower since they threw in random older costumes. You need to hit a crazy-low 0.78% and that’s certainly not easy.

Since only one gacha wasn’t enough, they also restored the costumes from last year, so you get two ways to sink money into the game instead of one. isn’t throwing money at frustrating low-chance gacha a joyous way to celebrate the new year?

Incidentally, only the older gacha is included in the Steam version in English, which is behind in content by approximately a year.

You can check out a trailer featuring the new costume below.

Phil Spencer Believes Bethesda Will Be Critical to Xbox’s Progress; Excited About Announced & Unannounced Games

3 years 4 months ago

During the latest episode of Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb’s Xbox Podcast, division head Phil Spencer discussed the acquisition of Bethesda.

Spencer mentioned that final approval of the deal will come in 2021 and everything is on track. He feels really good about it. At the moment Microsoft is “hands-off” with Bethesda as they continue to do the work they’re doing, as the deal hasn’t gone through yet.

Incidentally, speaking about the $7 billion deal, Spencer confirmed that the business is doing well, and it’s profitable and growing.

He then mentioned that Bethesda’s teams are going to be “very, very critical” to Xbox’s progress going forward. He can’t wait to close the deal so that they can start working as one company. He is “incredibly excited” about Starfield and more games, some of which have been announced already and some haven’t.

Spencer believes Bethesda is going to be an “incredible addition” to Microsoft’s first-party studios. He is excited about 2021 and Bethesda is “an incredibly important part of that.”

It’ll certainly be interesting to see what this partnership between Xbox and Bethesda will bring. At the moment, we know that Bethesda is working on Starfield, which is likely still a while away, while The Elder Scrolls IV is probably even further into the future.

Phil Spencer Talks Microsoft Flight Simulator & Enabling Community Creators to Make Content for Games

3 years 4 months ago

During the latest episode of Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb’s Xbox Podcast, division head Phil Spencer talked about Microsoft Flight Simulator and how more games could enable the community’s creativity.

Spencer mentioned that he knew there was a strong community out there already, but a testament to Game Pass is that Microsoft can now build something that has a very dedicated core, with millions of people who already love the game, but then there also are tens of millions of people who are going to give it a try since it can seem daunting with retail being the only option.

Game Pass enables that and bringing it to Xbox Series X and S next summer will be “fantastic.”

Spencer was playing the game today to test his new gaming PC, flying over his house and more, and he noticed the community of creators on the game’s marketplace.

He believes this should be part of any game where it makes sense, with Microsoft Flight Simulator being clearly one of those.

The question is how to take the same capability and unlock the creative potential of the community to go and build content that they can sell to other players, obviously after it has been vetted.

Looking through the marketplace full of content for Microsoft Flight Simulator, he noticed how cool it is to see people building their business around creating content for video games.

Spencer believes this is something Microsoft will do more and more, unlocking creative communities that can bring their content to extend the life of video games beyond what the developers can do.

Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Teases Things He’s “Incredibly Excited About” For 3 to 10 Years in The Future

3 years 4 months ago

During the latest episode of Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb’s Xbox Podcast, division head Phil Spencer teased the long-term game.

First of all, Spencer talked about Game Pass, mentioning that 2020 was an important year, but 2021 is going to be an “incredible year” when he looks at the lineup of games coming to the service and at the continued work to bring it to more people.

Speaking more in general, he mentioned that he sees what is coming in the next year as “Horizon 0,” while things coming between two and three years in the future are “Horizon 1.” Finally, there is “Horizon 2,” representing things that may come three to ten years out. Most of those may not work, but some do. Backward compatibility was one of them.

Among those there are some things he’s “incredibly excited about” and they will be talked about in the next year or two. According to Spencer, those may get people as excited as xCloud or Game Pass are doing today.

While the team is in the moment, they’re also thinking about things that have the potential to be real changers, but are also risky.

“There are some cool things on the horizon there as well. It’s just an incredibly exciting time for the teams right now.”

Spencer is proud of the ability of the team to take some longer-term bets that can really make the difference.

Incidentally, we hear that 2021 will be an important year for Xbox, as it will bring the 20th anniversary of the launch of the brand with the original console in Nov. 15, 2001.

NieR: Automata Creator Yoko Taro Has Two Games in Development

3 years 4 months ago

If you love NieR creator Yoko Taro’s games, there is a reason to celebrate the new year… or two.

The adorable masked developer and Square Enix’s producer Yosuke Saito were in attendance at Nico Nico’s year-end livestream, and they revealed that they are working together on two games, as reported by Games Talk.

The first is a game that Saito-san actually disapproved at first. Yet, Yoko Taro was very passionate about it, and managed to convince the producer with an hour-long presentation. While the developer’s enthusiasm convinced Saito-san to give it a go, he still appears to be unsure about it.

The second project is one that the two developers actually both wanted to make, and this is planned to be released first.

At the moment, no further hints about the nature of the games were shared.

If I was to speculate, I’d sure hope that one of the two games is Drakengard, but this is just my personal wish, and you should take it with a massive grain of salt.

In the meanwhile, NieR Re[in]carnation will launch in Japan on February 18 with a crossover featuring the characters from NieR: Automata. It’s coming for iOS and Android following a recent delay for the game, which was originally planned for a release in 2020.

Microsoft Flight Simulator CRJ Add-On Delayed by Aerosoft to Q1 2021; Looks Gorgeous in Teaser Trailer

3 years 4 months ago

Today Aerosoft had news to share about its upcoming Bombardier CRJ add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Unfortunately, it appears that it needs some more time in the hangar before it’s ready for prime time, so it has been delayed to Q1 2021.

You can read the full message relayed by program manager Mathijs Kok alongside the first official teaser trailer.

“Dear FlightSim Community,

We feel the expectation on us to give official information about the release of the Aerosoft CRJ 550/700 for the Microsoft Flight Simulator.

In this regard we have a concern and we’ll keep it short: We made a really tough decision to postpone the CRJ release into the first quarter of next year. This decision wasn’t easy for us, because we know how much anticipation there is in the community for this add-on.

We have decided to do so, because we want to deliver a CRJ that meets all expectations, but we have not reached this level yet. We need more time for the development and beta testing. We hope the additional time allows us to complete the necessary work to provide the highest quality and the best possible experience for you right from the start.

We therefore hope for your understanding. However, we do have a little present for you. The first official teaser:”

Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation Gets New Trailer Introducing New Girl Lobelia

3 years 4 months ago

Following the reveal of Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation’s new girl Lobelia, Koei Tecmo released a full trailer introducing her.

Lobelia is an aristocratic heiress acquainted with Fiona. She has come to the island to pursue her own mischievous plans, and now it’s the owner’s turn to deal with her.

You can check her out in the trailer below.

Do keep in mind that Lobelia’s introduction doesn’t mean that you can unlock her immediately unless you’re willing to pay cold hard cash for the opportunity.

The new character is already available exclusively via a paid gacha with the usual ridiculous 0.78% chance to get the SSR you need, and she likely won’t be available in non-paid gacha for several months.

The good news is that the previously-released bookish girl Tsukushi is now very likely to appear for the first time in a free gacha. It didn’t happen with the New Year event, but it should be soon.
