Monster Hunter Rise Has a High Barrier to Entry for Newcomers – Demo Impressions

3 years 3 months ago

The latest entry in the Monster Hunter franchise is less than two months away and is coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch. To build up the excitement for the release of Monster Hunter Rise, Capcom has released a free demo that can be downloaded from the Nintendo eShop from now until Feb. 1. After spending some time with the demo, I have some mixed thoughts about the experience.

For starters, I am not a Monster Hunter veteran. I’ve yet to find a Monster Hunter game that lured me in, and trapped me in for more than a few hours of gameplay. However, as a fan of the Switch, and as someone who is open to liking a game like Monster Hunter, I’m coming into Monster Hunter Rise with a fresh set of eyes hoping to be enthralled. As of right now though with Rise, I can’t entirely say that I’m there yet.

Phantasy Star Online 2 Idola Chronicles AC Scratch Collection Brings Costumes From the Mobile Game

3 years 3 months ago

Today Sega announced another AC Scratch collection for the western servers of its popular MMORPG Phantasy Star Online 2.

The title is “Idola Chronicles” and people who have paid attention will likely recognize the costumes and hint to the name of the mobile game Idola Phantasy Star Saga.

Funnily, the announcement tiptoes around actually mentioning the mobile game, likely because it isn’t published by Sega in the west.

The collection releases tomorrow, Jan. 12, and will be available until Feb. 10. You can find a full list of the included items on the official blog post.

Microsoft Introduces First New Xbox Controller Color Variant of 2021

3 years 3 months ago

January tends to be light on game announcements, companies often coast off of the holiday season for a bit- but Microsoft decided to throw out a little something for Xbox fans. Today Microsoft unveiled a brand new color variant for the newest iteration of their flagship controller.

Known for going above and beyond in the naming department, this new controller is not just red – it’s Pulse Red. Despite the fancy name, the controller does no sort of pulsing- but the design is extremely crisp nonetheless. The controller sports the updated features that launched with the Xbox Series X/S controllers back in November, including the new share button.

Hitman 3 Features a Platinum Trophy For the First Time in the Trilogy

3 years 3 months ago

Hitman 3 looks even more brilliant with every new detail and reel of footage, and today there’s yet more reason to celebrate for the completionists out there. That’s because for the very first time in the Hitman trilogy there’s a platinum trophy to score.

Spotted by PowerPyx, the full trophy list features 46 achievements, and it already lists an additional 36 (not needed for the plat) across three upcoming DLC packs that take players back to familiar locations from previous games in the series.

Scanning through the list briefly, it doesn’t appear as though there are any truly nightmarish achievements. Notably, as PowerPyx notes, there are several that allude to unlocking shortcuts, which is tied to an all-new feature of Hitman 3 that puts a premium on exploring each of its sandboxes thoroughly.

Speaking of sandboxes, in related news today, developer IO Interactive has revealed all of the game’s six different locations, which you can check out here.

Hitman 3 launches on Jan. 20 for PC, Google Stadia, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and will be coming to Nintendo Switch via cloud streaming technology.

For more on Hitman 3, its anticipated PSVR functionality was showcased in a trailer last week.

3 years 3 months ago

Hitman 3 studio IO Interactive announced all six locations the game will take place in when it launches next week for PC and consoles.

Agent 47 will travel to six unique locations across three continents, and the game will contain “a narrative-focused finale” that will conclude the trilogy of games that started with the Hitman reboot in 2016.

The developer did not reveal any story beats of why Agent 47 will need to visit each of these places, but did give a brief description for each level that may give an idea of some of the missions.

The six locations are:

Microsoft Flight Simulator – Santorini Airport Add-On Review (JustSim)

3 years 3 months ago

JustSim has released Santorini International Airport (LGSR) for Microsoft Flight Simulator, bringing another popular vacation destination to 2020’s flight sim.

The airport is available on SimMarket for about $21 plus applicable taxes. It comes with its own installer, so you don’t need to do much fiddling in order to get things up and running.

Santorini airport is host to regular flights to and from Athens, but it lights up in the summer when a metric ton of airlines activate their links with pretty much every major hub in Europe.

Since the airport mixes both civilian and military use, it’s certainly interesting from the operational point of view, which adds to the beautiful location further embellished by spectacular sunrises over the sea.

The military base, though, also adds to the challenge of recreating the airport, increasing the difficulty of finding reliable source material. Google maps has the whole structure blurred, while Bing Maps is outdated by about a year.

This also means that it’s difficult to review it. Just as the developers had to work harder to find source material, it hasn’t been easy to verify the add-on’s fidelity.

Cyberpunk 2077 Support To Be Monitored by Polish Consumer Protection Agency

3 years 3 months ago

CD Projekt Red’s commitment to fixing Cyberpunk 2077’s poor performance on PS4 and Xbox One will be monitored by UOKiK, Poland’s Office of Competition and Consumer Protection, which has the authority to fine the company up to 10% of its yearly income should its obligations not be met.

Those obligations allude to the developer’s pledge to release two major patches in January and February. Further, the extent to which it follows through in offering refunds to unhappy customers across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms.

A UOKiK spokesperson told Polish outlet Dziennik Gazeta Prawna (translated by IGN):

“We are asking the company for explanation regarding problems with the game and actions taken by them. We will check how the developer is working on patches or solving issues preventing playing on various consoles, but also what steps [the company] is planning to take regarding people [who requested refunds] and are not happy with their purchase because they can’t play the game on owned hardware, despite assurances by the producer.”

Notably, UOKiK’s report indicates that even CD Projekt Red’s efforts thus far to issue refunds may not be deemed satisfactory, which could ultimately mean it’s forced to pay a maximum fine on top.

10 Best Speedruns from AGDQ 2021

3 years 3 months ago

AGDQ 2021 came to a close over the weekend and while it was yet another online-only event, we still got to see plenty of top-tier speedruns, along with a few world records for some categories as well. Here are our picks for the best speedruns we saw during AGDQ 2021 over the last week.

Silent Hill 3

Best Speedruns AGDQ 2021

If you’ve seen any of Punchy’s runs before, you probably already know what to expect from this one. Punchy is best known for being energetic and charismatic during his runs, properly explaining the various speed techniques he makes use of in the game, while also injecting humor in between to keep things entertaining.

Silent Hill and Resident Evil speedruns are always fun to watch, and the Extra new game category for Silent Hill 3 is no different. Punchy is deft with controlling and maneuvering Heather through the tight corridors and weird camera angles, and it’s always fun to see both character and runner dressed up in fun costumes.

A “Nindies” Game Pass is What Nintendo Switch Online Really Needs in 2021

3 years 3 months ago

When Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) launched in 2018, I had mixed feelings about it. The price point was fine; it was inevitable that eventually we’d have to start paying to use online services, and at only $20 a year, it surely beats the rates of its competition.

I like the extras that NSO offers. This seems to be the meat of the service. A growing library of retro games, the occasional exclusive demo, and the even more occasional brand new titles (Tetris 99 and Super Mario Bros. 35) give me a reason to keep renewing even when I’m not playing Switch games online.

The Switch is coming up on its 4th anniversary this March, and I often hear discussions about what Nintendo could do to improve the NSO service. The most common idea that gets thrown around is an obvious improvement: simply add more consoles to the retro library service.

I don’t think there’s anyone who wouldn’t appreciate an easy way to play games from consoles like Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Advance on their Switch, especially if they came “free” with the online subscription.

Valorant’s Sneaky New Agent Yoru Spearheads its Most Exciting Content Update Yet

3 years 3 months ago

Riot Games is preparing to launch Valorant’s anticipated second episode later this week, which arguably marks its most substantial and exciting content drop since the game launched back in June of last year.

It’s set to introduce a sneaky duelist agent named Yoru who looks like a very compelling addition to the roster, as well as some balancing changes to two other agents, new battle pass content, and tweaks to competitive matchmaking.

It’s such a big deal, in fact, that over the weekend Riot revealed a lengthy –and quite brilliant — cinematic animation to build the hype, which is only the second of its kind. I’m sure fans will agree that it’s exciting to see the developer finally deliver on fleshing out Valorant’s lore in the way it’s alluded to for a long time. This one was worth the wait:

You’ll notice some of Yoru’s utility teased during the sequence if you checked it out, which revolves around his ability to bait and trick opponents with a kit that strongly favors those who like to lurk around the map.

If you’re not up to speed, here’s the breakdown of each ability:

CyberConnect2 Reveals Why .hack//Link Was Never Released in The West

3 years 3 months ago

Back in 2010, Bandai Namco (then called Namco Bandai) released .hack//Link for PSP in Japan, developed by CyberConnect2, but it never came west.

The developer‘s vocal president Hiroshi Matsuyama took to YouTube to explain not only why the game was released on PSP intead of PS2 or PS3, but also why it never came west.

The choice of platform boils down to the success of the PSP in Japan, as the possibility of a worldwide release was pretty much an afterthought back then.

The game also had a more approachable concept compared to its predecessor in order to tempt younger players to try the franchise after its existing fanbase had gotten older.

As for why the game was never localized, it’s actually pretty simple. Bandai Namco’s American and European arms didn’t want it because it was for PSP PSP, which wasn’t a very successful platform in the west.

Matsuyama mentioned that, in hindsight, the developer should have probably reconsidered the choice of platform.

Azur Lane Finally Getting Pizza Hut Collaboration Skins in The West (Without the Pizza Hut)

3 years 3 months ago

Azur Lane developer Yostar announced that the western servers of the game will receive the Pizza Hut collaboration skins.

The skins for Belfast and Fubuki were originally released only on the Chinese servers a while ago, but now they’re making their way to the west, with a caveat.

They’re losing all the actual Pizza Hut branding, which is a bit odd, but I guess Licensing is to blame here. If you don’t care to be exposed to corporate publicity, I guess it can be considered a perk.

On the other hand, we’re also missing on the third skin for Hornet, which was recently revealed for Japan and wasn’t part of the original collaboration in China.

The event will start on January 12 and end on January 25, with Fubuki’s skin obtainable for free by playing.

You can see the skins we’re getting in the west and the Japanese ones below.

Microsoft Flight Simulator Louisville International Airport Released By FSDreamTeam

3 years 3 months ago

Today another major American airport received a custom rendition for Microsoft Flight Simulator as FSDreamTeam released Louisville International Airport (KSDF).

Louisville is certainly interesting due to being a mixed-use hub for both military and civilian traffic. While it doesn’t have any international airliner link, it still gets the name due to the heavy cargo traffic to and from other continents.

Perhaps even more interesting is the price, as Lousiville can be purchased for roughly $12 (plus applicable VAT) on FSDreamTeam’s own store or SimMarket. That’s certainly a breath of fresh air in a market that sees much smaller and simpler airports sold for over $20.

Black Ops Cold War Mid-Season Update to Bring New Fireteam Map & Zombies Mode

3 years 3 months ago

Treyarch has detailed what fans can expect from the mid-season update and released the full patch notes for yesterday’s Black Ops Cold War patch.

For Jan. 7, three new playlists and modes have been added to multiplayer, on top of bug fixes. First off is a brand-new playlist, called Raid + Crossroads Strike 24/7, which’ll see you play exclusively on the two small, close-quarters focused maps.

Then, you’ll now also be able to play two new modes: Gunfight Blueprints and Dirty Bomb Duos, the first seeing you play 2v2 with randomized loadout blueprints and the latter seeing ten teams of two race to “collect uranium stockpiles and detonate more dirty bombs than the competition.”

Looking forward, the mid-season update is due to come to Black Ops Cold War on Jan. 14. First of all, it will introduce a “massive new Fireteam map” called Sanatorium, and multiplayer will see the debut of Dropkick, a new mode that sees two teams of six fight for control of nuclear codes.

Elsewhere, in Zombies, a new Cranked mode will join the chaos, where “every zombie killed resets the timer counting down to your demise.” If you want to check out all the patch notes for the recent update, you can check out Treyarch’s post. It also has all the information you’ll need about the so-called DMR nerf that recently came to Warzone.

That’s all that’s been revealed so far for the mid-season update for Black Ops Cold War, and nothing has been revealed so far for Warzone. If and when anything is revealed, we’ll be sure to update you.

You can jump into the new Black Ops Cold War content next week, on Jan. 14.

“After over twenty-two years, I decided to end my cooperation with Techland. I would like to express my gratitude to the company that has allowed me to develop and fulfill myself for half my life. Techland, I will always be rooting for you, as well as the great people I have met thanks to you.”

It’s the second member of Dying Light 2’s writing team to cease work on the project following the exit of Chris Avallone last year, who was forced out after allegations of sexual misconduct.

Both departures also follow rumors of a troubled development cycle, which gained traction amongst worried fans who wondered why so little of the game had been shown since its initial reveal. Indeed, Twinfinite first enjoyed a hands-off preview of the game back at E3 2018 which looked thoroughly impressive, but we’ve seen precious little since.

Persona 5 Strikers to Star in Dragalia Lost Via New Event

3 years 3 months ago

Today Nintendo announced that its mobile game Dragalia Lost will host a new event featuring the popular JRPG Persona 5.

The event will include Joker and other characters appearing in the mobile game playable adventurers.

The event will come in late January, and it’ll be interesting to see its effect on the Cygames-developed game.

Incidentally, while the western version of the announcement only mentions “Persona series,” the Japanese wording is more specific, clarifying that the event is a collaboration with Persona 5 Strikers. This is not surprising, considering that the game developed by Koei Tecmo is also on the Switch.

You can take an early look in the video below.

If you’re unfamiliar with Dragalia Lost, it’s currently available for iOS and Android.

Below you can read an official description.

New Returnal Gameplay Showcased in Latest “Housecast” Episode

3 years 3 months ago

Developer Housemarque’s latest “Housecast” video series has today shone a spotlight on some all-new footage of its upcoming action game Returnal.

In this latest episode, marketing manager Mikael Haveri and the game’s director, Harry Krueger, explain the studio’s shift from its traditional arcade titles to a more cinematic, full 3D action game.

Krueger describes Returnal as a “bold” project that champions Housemarque’s core –and familiar– gameplay philosophies but with “a new dimension of ambition and complexity added to the mix.”

As the two discuss the studio’s vision for Returnal as a montage of new footage illustrates their points, and it really does look like a high-budget, third-person Nex Machina. You’ll notice the character dash through waves of bullets in intense gunfights that playout just like a bullet-hell experience.

Unlike its previous 2D games, though, Returnal’s level design is built around incorporating lots of verticality, while the tempo and focus on momentum is all about encouraging players to experiment with traversal. In addition to jumping and dashing there’s also a grappling hook to really boost across areas at pace.

The discussion also highlights Housemarque’s commitment to creating a tactile gameplay experience that really feels fun to play. And yes, that includes using PS5’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback to enhance immersion. Notably, the game features a fully customizable control layout so players are able to tailor the experience to their preference.

The discussion concludes with Krueger giving his take on the challenges of replicating the intense 2D avoidance-style gameplay of traditional arcade games, and how the studio has translated that to Returnal. In particular, features such as different enemy types, weapons, on-screen indicators, and audio design in order to help it feel as intuitive as Housemarque’s previous titles.
