Path of Exile Delays 3.13 Launch Because of Cyberpunk 2077

3 years 6 months ago
Path of Exile’s 3.13 end-game expansion has been delayed until January because, as the developers explain in a new blog post, the original release date now coincides with Cyberpunk 2077’s new release date. “Yesterday, CD Projekt Red announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will now be released on December 10,” designer Chris Wilson writes in a new blog post. “We do not want to put our players in a position of having to choose between these two games, so we have decided to step out of the way and delay the release of Path of Exile 3.13 until January.” The original release date for the 3.13 update was December 11.

PS5’s Patent Leaks Revealed Secrets Years Ago

3 years 6 months ago

While Sony was especially tight-lipped about the PS5 until recent months, fans spent the last few years digging deep into the internet and uncovering the next best thing to official announcements: patent filings. While they don’t always come to fruition, the information found in patent filings steps beyond speculation and into the realm of legitimacy — they come straight from the console manufacturer, after all, and imply some level of time and resource investment from Sony.

Several patents were filed in the years leading up to PS5 that gave console enthusiasts plenty to chew on, ranging from conventional tech like the DualSense design to more outlandish ideas like an emotionally intelligent, robotic gaming buddy.

Now, with a much clearer picture of Sony’s PS5 plans, we’re revisiting 11 such filings to see which ideas have been realized and which have yet to come to pass.

Halo Infinite Director Leaves Project After Delay

3 years 6 months ago
Halo Infinite project director Chris Lee has left the project after following a delay that will see the next Master Chief adventure released in 2021 instead of this holiday. Lee confirmed the departure to Bloomberg News. In a statement Lee said, “I have stepped back from Infinite and I am looking at future opportunities. I believe in the team and am confident they will deliver a great game and now is a good time for me to step away. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=confirmed-xbox-series-x-games&captions=true"] Lee is the latest top director to depart the project after creative director Tim Longo left 343 in 2019 followed by lead producer Mary Olson. Halo veteran Joe Staten now leads the single-player campaign development, and Pierre Hintze is leading multiplayer. “Chris Lee remains a Microsoft employee and while he has stepped back from Halo: Infinite right now, we appreciate all he has done for the project to date,” Microsoft said in a statement provided to Bloomberg. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/23/halo-infinite-9-minutes-of-campaign-gameplay"] Halo Infinite was originally slated to be a launch game alongside the Xbox Series X this holiday, but was delayed until 2021 to further develop and refine the project after a tepid reveal over the summer.

Call of the Sea on Xbox Series X: The First 18 Minutes

3 years 6 months ago
Call of the Sea was one of the more intriguing reveals at Microsoft's third-party showcase back in May. It's a first-person puzzle/adventure game set on a tropical island, in which you play a woman in 1934 investigating clues left by a previous voyage that caused her husband to go missing. Call of the Sea promises "an emotional, charming character study of a woman on a journey of self-discovery." That woman, aka Norah, the protagonist you play as, is voiced by Cissy Jones, who you'll remember from her award-winning performance as Delilah in 2017's fantastic Firewatch. Take a look at the opening 18 minutes of the game running on Xbox Series X in the video above. Call of the Sea is due out before the end of 2020 for Series X, Series S, Xbox One, and Windows PC. Raven Software Co-Founder Talks About the Origins of Heretic, the 'Medieval Doom'

3 years 6 months ago
Raven Software co-founder Brian Raffel has revealed details on the development of the classic shooter, Heretic, including a comment from id Software's John Carmack that helped the team home in on the game's signature style. IGN's Ryan McCaffrey sat down with Raffel to discuss Raven Software's broad history in the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered, along with discussions on Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, Hexen, Heretic, Soldier of Fortune, and more. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2009/03/09/from-hexen-to-wolverine-part-1"] Heretic has long been described as 'medieval Doom' or 'fantasy Doom,' and those are apt descriptions. When asked where the idea for Heretic came from, Raffel said, "The big story there is, [id] wanted to work with us. They wanted to do a fantasy game. It didn't start out to be a 'Doom fantasy.' We started... typical D&D players, we first started designing the game and we got super deep into all this... you know... your Strength, Wisdom... all the usual stuff. And, of course, it's a credit to John Carmack, here. He said, 'Just do it like Doom, and add the fantasy flavor.'" The fantasy setting isn't the only notable departure from the Doom formula, however, as the game's protagonist could also fly, a power Doom Guy could only dream of. "I have to call out Chris Rhinehart, who was one of our programmers at the time. Kind of a funny story about the flying... it's so true, so many of these stories are these 'happy accidents...' Chris came up with the idea of moving the horizon line just up and down. It wasn't a real calculation of flying, it was a hack...

Bravely Default 2: February Release Date Announced

3 years 6 months ago
Bravely Default 2 will be released on February 26, 2021. Announced in today's Nintendo Mini Direct Partner Showcase, the JRPG sequel got a set of explanatory trailers, showing off character classes, story and more. Square Enix also announced that it's taken onboard feedback from the game's demo earlier this year, following 20,000 survey responses. The headline changes are based around the game's difficulty options, and its controls. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/26/the-first-12-minutes-of-bravely-default-2-gameplay-demo-version"] We enjoyed that demo, calling it "a good ol' fashioned turn-based RPG with some novel systems", although also mentioned that the difficulty level would take getting used to. Pre-orders for the game have opened today. This was far from the only announcement in today's not-so-Mini Direct, and we've got everything announced in one handy place. Control Gets Surprise Release on Switch

3 years 6 months ago
Control: Ultimate Edition is out on Nintendo Switch today as a cloud version of the game. IGN's Game of the Year for 2019 got a quick gameplay trailer in today's Nintendo Direct Mini Partner Showcase. It looks better than you'd expect from Switch hardware, but that's because it will require a persistent internet connection to run. The eShop listing for the game leads you to a free launcher program, which offers the ability to try a 10-minute demo version of the game, which is available either with "enhanced performance" or "enhanced graphics". You have to play 5 minutes of that demo in order buy an access pass for the full game. The access pass costs $39.99 / £34.99 and lets players play the original game and the two expansion packs. There are two graphics settings, an enhanced performance mode that turns off ray tracing but boosts framerate to 60fps and an enhanced graphics mode with ray tracing at 30fps. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/28/control-ultimate-edition-cloud-version-trailer"] We've seen cloud games of performance-intensive games on Switch before, most notably with Japanese releases for Resident Evil 7 and Assassin's Creed Odyssey. It seems it's a trend that may be coming west, as Hitman 3 also got a cloud version announcement today.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Demo Released

Nintendo has announced that a demo for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will hit Nintendo eShop today. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/28/hyrule-warriors-age-of-calamity-official-demo-trailer"] The demo will allow you to play the game's entire first chapter, and will carry save data over to the main game when it arrives on November 20. A new trailer also confirmed that the game will allow you to control Breath of the Wild's gigantic weapons of war, the Divine Beasts. Which is amazing. Tetris Effect: Connected - Xbox Series X Hands-On Preview

3 years 6 months ago
Tetris Effect: Connected producer Mark MacDonald was remarkably candid when he explained the idea behind this multiplayer-enhanced version of Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s excellent sensory Tetris experience. “We didn’t do multiplayer at the time [Tetris Effect was originally released] because we didn’t have a good idea.” He added that they tried working on it, but what they came up with was “pretty standard” and didn’t fit Effect’s escape-y, chill vibe, and so they asked themselves, “Why are we doing this?” and then they cut it. Fast forward a bit, though, and a good idea did strike from a unique source of inspiration: the Classic Tetris World Championship in Portland. Seeing that score-based competition, MacDonald said, helped lead to the five multiplayer modes that differentiate Connected from the core Tetris Effect (which is here in its entirety, by the way. Oh, and it runs at 4K/60fps on the Series X, while it's 1080p/30fps on Xbox One S and 1080p/60fps on Xbox One X). Let’s take a quick look at each one. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=tetris-effect-connected-xbox-series-x-screenshots&captions=true"] The first mode is Zone Battle. Here, when you clear lines it sends garbage blocks to the other person, but you can freeze time to stop garbage blocks from coming in. That leads to some interesting strategic options. Do you let your opponent zone first, and play defense, or do you push the attack to try and put them back on their heels? Score Attack – the game type most directly inspired by the Classic Tetris World Championship – might be my favorite of the group. You’re effectively playing separate, synchronized single-player games, and the person with the highest score wins.

Pikmin 3 Deluxe Review

3 years 6 months ago

Like a group of space explorers is search of a hospitable new planet, Pikmin 3 is the latest in a long line of charming Wii U gems to land on the more fertile ground of a suped-up Switch port, and goodness gracious does it deserve it. Already a fantastic mix of adorable real-time strategy and tricky spatial puzzles, Pikmin 3 Deluxe makes the original even better with some enjoyable content additions and boatload of impactful quality-of-life improvements. The only problem now is that I’m nearly out of reasons to keep my Wii U at all.

For those who didn’t play it in 2013, Pikmin 3 sends three intrepid explorers hurtling toward the surface of an alien planet in search of fruit to feed their homeworld. There they have to befriend, grow, and command the lovable little creatures that can help them repair their ship and collect enough fruit juice to stay alive while they do it. It’s simultaneously cute and intense as you race both your own juice supply and a sun timer to efficiently multitask and accomplish as much as you can each day, slowly opening more areas up as you unlock new types of these adorable and handy pikmin. Here’s what we said about Pikmin 3 in our original review:

“Pikmin 3 is a delight. There’s nothing else like its gentle combination of exploration, strategy, and discovery, and it made me feel both empathy and responsibility for virtual creatures that most games would treat as disposable fodder. It transported me like few other games can, giving the feeling of being a stranger in a strange (but oddly familiar) world. It's over too soon, but it leaves a lasting impression.” - Keza MacDonald, July 22, 2013

Cyberpunk 2077 Works on PC and Next-Gen Consoles Right Now

3 years 6 months ago
Cyberpunk 2077 is "ready" on PC, and "plays well" on next-gen consoles, with current-gen versions currently being worked on after the game's most recent delay. CD Projekt Red also says there should be no knock-on delay to the game's expansions. Speaking on a conference call after the game's delay to December 10 (reported by Pap Business), CD Projekt CEO Adam Kicinski explained that there would be no further delays, and that this most recent push back was a different situation to previous release date changes. "The game for PC is ready and plays well on next-gen consoles and the company is finalizing the process concerning current gen consoles." That suggests that current-gen console performance was the reason for the delay - something IGN has heard independently from sources close to CD Projekt Red. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/cyberpunk-2077-delayed-for-a-fourth-time"] It's worth pointing out that the version running on next-gen consoles is almost certainly the same as the current-gen edition - true PS5 and Xbox Series upgrades aren't arriving until next year, and are likely lower down CDPR's development priorities ahead of the launch. Asked if there had been knock-on effects because of the current delay CD Projekt's SVP of Business Development, Michal Nowakowski explained that there had been no impact on planned expansions to the game.

PS5: Sony Aims to Sell 7.6 Million Units By March

3 years 6 months ago
Sony is aiming to shift more than 7.6 million PS5 units by the end of March 2021. As reported by Bloomberg, the Japanese company has surpassed analyst expectations and raised its profit outlook by 13% ahead of the launch of the PlayStation 5 in November. This includes a plan to sell more than 7.6 million units of the PS5, which would be "more than the PS4 managed in its first fiscal year." The plan was detailed by Sony's chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki during a quarterly earnings briefing held this week. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/27/ps5-console-unboxing"] We recently learned from SIE CEO Jim Ryan that in the US, Sony pre-sold as many PS5s in the first 12 hours as the PS4 did in the first 12 weeks of its preorder availability, so that figure looks pretty achievable. The PlayStation 5 is set to launch on November 12 and November 19, depending on which country you live in, and you can check out our unboxing of the next-gen console here. If you're looking for impressions of the DualSense controller, you can also check out our hands-on preview of Astro's Playroom, the game that comes packaged with the PS5.

Watch Dogs: Legion Review

3 years 6 months ago

After decades of running over pedestrians by the dozen in open-world action games without a second thought, it’s actually a little bit unsettling to think that each of them might have unique talents and even the potential to be a hero. Not so much that I drive more carefully or anything, but after playing Watch Dogs: Legion I think about it a little bit more. Legion’s clever twist makes this third game in the series play like a hacker version of State of Decay, where every NPC can be recruited as a playable character and each has their own weapons, abilities, and traits that can give them very different playstyles. That lends it a much more sandboxy feel than the previous games because any given character can make the same mission feel dramatically different. It can be rough and experimental in places, but I have to hand it to Ubisoft for being willing to take chances like this.

PS5: As Many Pre-Orders Made in 12 Hours as PS4 Pre-Orders in 12 Weeks in US

3 years 6 months ago
Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan says PlayStation 5 demand appears to be "very considerable" based on the number of pre-orders in the United States. Ryan spoke to Reuters about the consumer demand for the PS5 on October 27 and said: "The demand as expressed by the level of pre-order has been very, very considerable." Ryan said that Sony pre-sold as many PS5s in the first 12 hours of preorders in the United States as were sold in the first 12 weeks of preorders for the PlayStation 4. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=ps5-console-first-look-size-comparison&captions=true"] While Ryan wouldn't talk any specific numbers as it relates to PS5 preorders, one can infer that the number must be quite high. Exact PS4 preorder numbers aren't known but we know it surpassed 1 million pre-orders worldwide by July 2013, which is four months before the console's launch, and over 1 million PS4s were sold within the console's first 24 hours after launch. If the PS5's pre-order numbers in the first 12 hours match the first 12 weeks of PS4 pre-orders, we wouldn't be surprised if the PS5 pre-order number is nearing or past 1 million in the US. Ryan said that it may end up that not everybody who wants to purchase a PS5 on launch day will be able to actually find one to purchase. There will be, however, more PS5s at launch than there were PS4s at launch, according to Sony.

Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter Account Reckoning With Its Old Tweets After Delay

3 years 6 months ago
Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed again and will now be released on December 10. Although the latest delay marks the third time CD Projekt Red's ambitious cyberpunk RPG is pushed back, this latest delay caught many off-guard, particularly because the November 19 date seemed — until today — fairly ironclad. The official Cyberpunk 2077's Twitter account has been firm on the November release date for some time and based on tweets as recent as yesterday, the upcoming RPG seemed all set to hit the November 17 release date. Screenshot 2020-10-27 131844 Unfortunately, the existence of that tweet has become fodder for those disappointed by the latest delay news. And the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account now has to contend with the responses. Screenshot 2020-10-27 131913 "Would anyone notice if we delete this real quick?" the Cyberpunk Twitter account asked in response to another one of their tweets, this time from October 6 that says "No more delays are happening." Screenshot 2020-10-27 132026 Now, the social media team is putting out fires by responding to people on social media - sometimes with jokes, sometimes in earnest - about why they couldn't alert people earlier about the delay.

Tell Us: What Was the First Time a Video Game Scared You?

3 years 6 months ago
Hey, listen! We love hearing your feedback on Nintendo Voice Chat, and now you once again have the chance to make your voice heard on NVC. At the bottom of this article, you will find an option that lets you share a brief video with us and the IGN community, powered by audio and video commenting tool, Yappa. We want as many NVC fans as we can get to answer this question for next week's episode: Let's get spooky! What was the first time a video game genuinely scared you?

Here's how you can participate:

  • Create a Yappa account or sign in with a Facebook, Google, Disqus, or LinkedIn account.
  • Look for the video commenting box at the bottom of our articles on both desktop and mobile web. Note that the feature is currently not available on our mobile apps.
  • Hit the green bar with the speech bubble icon, allow access to your mic and camera if your permission settings require that step.
  • You can choose between audio and video recording. We’d prefer video to see your face (and only your face, please -- although Samus and Master Chief helmets or God of War face paint, etc. are cool with us), but you can use the audio-only option if you’re having a bad hair day.
  • When you can see your face, hit record to start recording your video. Hit stop when you’re done. You can leave a message that's up to 45 seconds long.
  • You can rewatch your video and then choose to cancel or post.
  • If you'd rather upload a video you recorded separately, you can use the Upload Media function to do so. This'll be handy to show off your amiibo or classic games collections. But please, no copyrighted content.
  • You can watch and share videos from fellow commenters by clicking on their icons and you can follow contributors you like as well.

Facebook Quietly Rolls Out Game Streaming

3 years 6 months ago
Facebook Gaming has launched multiple cloud-streaming games on the Facebook browser and app. In a blog post, Facebook explained a few details about its goals and expectations for cloud gaming. Currently, five games support cloud streaming through Facebook. The lineup includes Asphalt 9: Legends, Mobile Legends: Adventure, PGA Tour Golf Shootout, Solitaire: Arthur's Tale, and WWE SuperCard. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/05/16/sony-microsoft-partnering-to-improve-cloud-gaming-streaming-platforms-ign-now"] Facebook plans to roll out more games in the future, and the first addition will be Dirt Bike Unchained, which Facebook will add in the coming weeks. Starting next year, developers will have the choice to add in-app purchases in their cloud games. Facebook plans to focus on free-to-play games to begin with, since those are the experiences players are used to finding on the platform. At launch, all games will be playable with your touch screen, or a mouse and keyboard, since the service is launching with games designed for mobile. Apple users won't have access to Facebook's new gaming experiment. The company says it won't launch the service on iOS yet, saying, "While our iOS path is uncertain, one thing is clear. Apple treats games differently and continues to exert control over a very precious resource." Instead, the cloud games are launching in beta on Android devices and the web. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/13/apple-removes-fortnite-from-ios-app-store"] For now, the service is only launching in select parts of the United States.

Cyberpunk 2077 Delayed Until December

3 years 6 months ago
Cyberpunk 2077 will be delayed again by 21 days, with a new release date set for December 10, 2020. CD Projekt Red announced the news in a statement on Twitter citing the immense task of shipping Cyberpunk 2077 across nine consoles and two generations of hardware. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=100-new-cyberpunk-2077-screenshots-gangs-characters-and-playstyles-revealed&captions=true"] "The biggest challenge for us right now is shipping the game on current-gen, next-gen, and PC at the same time, which requires us to prepare and test 9 versions of it," CD Projekt co-founders Adam Badowski and Marcin Iwinski said in a statement. The launch platforms for Cyberpunk 2077 include Xbox One/X, Xbox Series S/X, PS4/Pro, PS5, PC, and Stadia. Badowski and Iwinski also confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 was "almost a next-gen title" during development and so releasing the RPG across different generations requires effort for "every version" to run smoothly. "We're aware it might seem unrealistic when someone says that 21 days can make any difference in such a massive and complex game, but they really do," the founders say.
