Deliver Us Mars is a bigger, prettier, more physical space sequel

1 year 8 months ago

Dunno if you’ve noticed by there’s an awful lot of sci-fi games on the way, most of which – these being games – revolve around shooting space creatures to glowing green bits. Deliver Us Mars, the recently delayed sequel to Deliver Us The Moon, takes a more peaceful option, now blending the original’s puzzling with some Tomb Raider reboot-style platforming. Your deadliest enemy here is gravity, and as far as I understand, you can’t shoot that.

Amazon are intending to announce they’ve made an offer to buy publishing colossus Electronic Arts later today, according to a new report from USA Today’s For The Win, who cite sources from Swedish gaming agency GLHF. No clue yet as to how much they’d be paying, but it’s likely to be ranging in the hundreds of millions to billions of dollars. Maybe just not as many as Microsoft’s $68.7 billion buyout of Activision Blizzard, revealed in January.

Here's a lengthy look at Square Enix's fantasy farming sim Harvestella

1 year 8 months ago

As part of its latest Treehouse: Live showcase, Nintendo has shared a lengthy look at Square Enix's upcoming fantasy farming sim Harvestella, showing off its story, its world exploration and combat, its farming, fishing, and more.

Harvestella - a sort of blend of Final Fantasy, Harvest Moon, and Rune Factory - begins with players waking up with a bad case of amnesia in a world where the seasons are governed by four giant crystals known as Seaslight. Unfortunately for the locals, something has gone awry and a deadly dust known as the Quietus has started seeping from the crystals, trapping people indoors and causing crops to wither and die.

And that's not the end of their problems; as players settle into a vacant house on the outskirts of Lethe Village, a huge comet falls to the earth nearby, bringing with it the armoured body of an Omen, thought to be the cause of the calamity. We see some of this in Nintendo's showcase, but the bulk of the play-through is focused around Harvestella's second chapter as players start to explore the dungeon-like Higan Canyon, with help from new pal Dianthus.

Nintendo responds to PlayStation price hike

Nintendo has joined Microsoft in responding to this week's shock PlayStation 5 price hike, and said it had "no plans" to similarly bump up the Nintendo Switch's cost.

In a statement issued to Eurogamer this morning, Nintendo confirmed it had "no plans to increase the trade price of its hardware".

The response goes further than that of Microsoft's, which last night noted Sony's dramatic decision by simply stating it was keen to "offer our fans great gaming options", before reiterating the Xbox Series X and S's launch price point.

5 Changes Overwatch 2 Needs to Make Before Its Full Release

1 year 8 months ago

Back in 2016, Overwatch revolutionized multiplayer team-based shooters by having a colorful cast of misfits along with intuitive gameplay. Players everywhere gravitated to their favorite heroes and everyone from the damage-dealing Reaper to the lifesaving Mercy had the chance to shine in every match of Overwatch. However, Overwatch wasn’t just a simple flash in the pan for the summer of 2016, this game was a certified phenomenon that slowly revealed interesting lore along with ultra-produced cinematics and comics that bolstered the lore.

Not only that, but the fandom helped secure Overwatch as the most popular game in the world for a time. Sadly this couldn’t last forever and the original game’s popularity slowly diminished over time. But with Overwatch 2 just on the horizon, here are the five changes that Blizzard needs to make to ensure that the sequel can exprience sucess in today’s market.

Wo Long: How Team Ninja's New Soulslike Differs from Nioh

1 year 8 months ago

While the new trailer for Team Ninja’s highly anticipated Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty contains actual gameplay for the first time, there’s still a lot we don’t know about Team Ninja’s new Soulsborne title. Most notably, after making two installments of the Nioh series, the team decided to go in a somewhat new direction - and we wanted to know how it differs.

IGN sat down with producer Fumihiko Yasuda and development producer Masaaki Yamagiwa to find out how Wo Long is different from the developer’s popular past series. The most obvious thing that sets Wo Long apart from Team Ninja’s previous efforts is its setting, and it seems that this new location will differentiate Wo Long from Nioh in multiple ways.

“Being set in China, we were able to create locations of much greater scale than in Nioh, which was set in Japan,” Yasuda says. “Even something like a castle is much bigger than before, and exploration has become more vertical because the player character in Wo Long can jump,” he adds.

While Nioh’s combat was based around ninja skills and samurai swords, Wo Long’s combat is all about Chinese martial arts.

“Gameplay-wise, the biggest difference is an emphasis on speed,” Yasuda continues. “There’s no stamina gauge like you had in Nioh, so you’ll constantly be confronted by a multitude of situations in which you need to react immediately. You can choose to play more aggressively, but there are also a lot of new ways to evade enemy attacks.”

AEW Fight Forever - A Much Needed Alternative to the Mainstream - gamescom 2022

1 year 8 months ago

As wrestling games got closer and closer to simulating the real action between the ropes, it has felt like some of the magic that made the genre such a smash hit in the N64 and early PlayStation eras was lost. AEW Fight Forever is looking to reignite that magic, and for both better and worse, it’s succeeding — Fight Forever plays almost exactly like WWF No Mercy, and while the core gameplay certainly hit me with waves of nostalgia, it also stung me with little rocks and pebbles of things that hold up less well to a modern standard.

Let’s start with the good. Fight Forever is exactly the kind of solid, pick-up-and-play friendly, arcadey wrestling game that the genre is very much in need of. A gap that WWE 2K Battlegrounds tried to fill, but fell short. There’s a button to punch, a button to kick, a button to grapple, and those buttons can be held down to execute slower, but stronger versions of each of those techniques. On the defensive end, there’s a button to block strikes, and a button to block grapples, and you’re rewarded with a reversal for timing a block just before the attack lands. This forms the bedrock of the combat system in Fight Forever, and just like in the days of the N64, the simplicity works well.

Other little nuances from No Mercy remain too. One of the biggest holdovers is the ability to hold the guard button while you’re getting up to crouch on the mat. While crouched, you are invulnerable to attacks, and are able to punish overly aggressive opponents with a quick strike to take back control of a match. Or if your opponent is wise to the tactic and backs off, you can just do a quick back roll and reset to a neutral position.

Blue Archive Launches Valentine’s Event in September 2022

1 year 8 months ago

Blue Archive Valentine's

It seems the Blue Archive calendar is just "built different". Thanks to the complications of launching the global edition of a live game, the next event on the game's schedule is the Blue Archive Valentine's event. According to Nexon's roadmap, it's scheduled to begin in September 2022. This follows after the New Year's event, which launched in August 2022.

Formally titled "Schale's Happy Valentine Patrol - Kosaka Wakamo's Silence and Feast", the event focuses on Wakamo, Chihiro, Sena, and Fubuki, four new playable Students. Things go wrong when Sensei agrees to help Chihiro and the others patrol for rowdiness during Kivotos' Valentine's day celebrations. The scene is put under siege by Wakamo, a notorious criminal.

Check out a trailer from when players of the Japanese edition experienced it (at a more seasonally appropriate time: Late January 2022).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Z48QKVIIbA

The Blue Archive Valentine's event also follows an unusual structure, swapping regularly between a Valentine's Day Patrol and an attack by Wakamo. Players will need to alternate between the two "phases" of the event to maximize their rewards. For their trouble they'll gain Pyroxene gems, progression materials, and Eleph for Fubuki, who can be obtained for free through event progress. Wakamo, Chihiro, and Sena will all appear on their own recruitment banners for players to roll for.

Minecraft Legends is a colourful mix of real-time strategy and snappy building

1 year 8 months ago

Minecraft Legends was first announced at Geoff Fest earlier this year, and a smidge more footage dropped again at a Nintendo Direct Mini. But despite both of these events, it's been difficult to ascertain what the game actually, well, is. Aside from being a real-time strategy spin-off, there's been nothing else to scan with our eyeballs for more info.

Colour me intrigued, then, as I sat in a quickfire presentation at this year's Gamescom and bore witness to some mythical gameplay. I can now report that what Minecraft Legends appears to be is as mix of real-time strategy and building, made all the more approachable by being set in Minecraft's colourful cube-verse.

Dead Island 2 is a surprisingly polished zombie 'em up that sticks to the script

1 year 8 months ago

Eight years ago Graham (who used to be to blame for all of this) got hands-on with Dead Island 2, back when the game was being developed by Yager, the folks behind Spec Ops: The Line. Since then, development changed hands like a baton at the Olympic relay; Yager left a year later, to be replaced by Sumo Digital, only for Sumo Digital to leave and be replaced by Dambuster Studios. Usain Bolt hasn't expressed interest yet, but there's time.

So going into a 20-minute hands-on with the game in the year 2022, I was a bit apprehensive. What sort of Frankenstinian horror awaited me behind closed doors? But, far from a shambling mess, what I played was a zombie 'em up that seemed close to what Graham saw in 2014, only polished up to a surprising, bloody gloss.

Sifu getting new scoring system, more modifiers in next week's big update

1 year 8 months ago

Developer Sloclap has detailed Sifu's big summer update - which is set to bring the likes of a new scoring system and gameplay modifiers - ahead of its arrival next Wednesday, 31st August.

Top of the list of new additions for the kung-fu beat-'em-up is the aforementioned new scoring system, which will "take into account every punch, kick, sweep and finisher performed" in order to rank players based on smoothness, efficiency and variety. "Dismantle a group of enemies without getting hit," Sloclap adds, "and players will be greeted with a score worth flaunting."

Elsewhere, next week's update brings a range of modifiers designed to suit all tastes. At one end of the spectrum, struggling players will be able to significantly reduce Sifu's challenge by giving themselves the likes of infinite health, structure, and unbreakable weapons. Those looking to further test their mettle, however, can prevent themselves from picking up weapons and set enemies to ignore guarding, or go even further by reducing their character down to a single hit point and bumping enemy strength up even further.

Nintendo Switch's lowest resolution games tested - and how a next-gen successor could boost image quality

1 year 8 months ago

The Nintendo Switch wasn't pushing the envelope in terms of performance when it launched with an modest Tegra X1 chip back in 2017, but its relatively modern graphics meant that the system could run recent titles without a massive development effort. On the flipside, its meagre levels of compute performance - a necessary compromise for a power-limited mobile device - often required big sacrifices to rendering resolution. With the Switch reportedly soon to be replaced by a successor, we thought we'd survey some of these efforts to see just how low-res the most demanding titles got - so just how low can the Nintendo Switch go?

First, some ground rules. We've evaluated these games by their lowest typical resolution, in portable mode, with full 3D graphics - but note that this is meant to be a sampling rather than a definitive list.

The first game I looked at is firmly in standard definition territory. Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled renders at 854x480 in portable play, with no anti-aliasing. When you're at a resolution this low, AA sometimes hurts more than it helps, so you will notice that several of these titles drop the technique entirely. In practice, Crash Team Racing looks quite messy in motion on the Switch - the screen is flooded with jagged edges. On the plus side it does look fairly sharp, but it certainly does distract from what is otherwise a solid version of the kart racing remake.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Gameplay Trailer Shows Off Stylish Demon Slaying

1 year 8 months ago

Team Ninja’s dark fantasy action title Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty impresses in a new gameplay trailer that captures the fast-paced thrills you'd expect from the minds behind Nioh and Ninja Gaiden.

Fans of the studio's previous action titles should find plenty to love with Wo Long if this video is any indication. Set during the Three Kingdoms era of China, you'll battle invading demons as a soldier using a blend of graceful swordplay and Chinese martial arts based on the Five Phases philosophy. The trailer shows off the many demonic foes awaiting your blade, including a bipedal tiger that is swiftly kicked out of the way by the protagonist.

Next month, those attending Tokyo Game Show will be the first to play Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty via a show floor demo. Everyone else will have to wait until early 2023 to experience the game on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch.

Nintendo Has 'No Plans' To Raise Switch Prices In Wake Of PlayStation 5 Price Increase

1 year 8 months ago

Yesterday, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced it will increase the price of PlayStation 5 consoles in various non-U.S. territories due to global economic conditions such as inflation. Microsoft then declared later that day that it will not be doing the same with the Xbox Series X/S. Now, Nintendo has chimed in on the matter.

In a statement to Eurogamer, Nintendo reiterates a quote from president Shuntaro Furukawa, made in June, in which he stated the company has "no plans to increase the trade price of its hardware.” Furukawa made this statement during the 82nd Annual General Meeting Shareholders that month, in which he also said:

"While we cannot comment on pricing strategies, we currently do not have any plans to change the price of our hardware due to inflation or increased procurement costs in each country. We will determine our future pricing strategies through careful and continued deliberations.”

Although the PlayStation 5's price will remain unchanged in the U.S. (for now), both versions of the console have become more expensive in Canada, Europe, the UK, Mexico, Japan, and Australia. The price hikes have already gone into effect in those regions except Japan, which occurs on September 15.

Konosuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World Trailer Teases Megumin Backstory

1 year 8 months ago

As promised yesterday, a trailer for Konosuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World has been released. This story serves as a spin-off and prequel to the main Konosuba series and will largely take place a year before Kazuma Sato arrived in Axel. This time around we will get a story focused almost entirely on everyone’s favorite Crimson Magic Clan magician, Megumin. Yunyun will also be along for the ride.

The trailer itself (fully in Japanese without subtitles) teases the reason why Megumin is so obsessed with Explosion magic. This bit of a tease absolutely goes with the story Megumin tells in the light novels that she witnessed Explosion magic for the first time as a young girl and that was the start of her fascination.

This spin-off will be coming sometime in 2023 from Drive.

You can watch the adorable trailer below, and get ready for an anime full of nothing but explosions.

Konosuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World was first announced to be in production back in May of this year, and unveiled a very brief teaser trailer last month.

Valorant System Requirements: Minimum & Recommended PC Specs Explained

1 year 8 months ago

Below, you’ll find the minimum and recommended specs for playing Valorant on PC at 30 frames-per-second. Keep in mind that while this is fine, as is the case with most shooters, the higher your framerate, the better your experience is going to be, and possibly the bigger advantage you’ll have over other players. Ideally, you want to be aiming for a consistent 60 FPS as an absolute minimum.

That’s because Valorant is a tactical shooter that rewards precision, and smoother framerates help you to react faster and see enemies with more clarity. Put simply, the faster and silkier your framerate, the more fluid your movements will be, which can have an impact on the accuracy of your shots.

Valorant Minimum PC Requirements (30 FPS)

  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, AMD Athlon 200GE
  • Graphics Card: Intel HD 4000, Radeon R5 200
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • VRAM: 1GB
  • Storage Space: At least 10GB
  • Operating System:  Windows 7/8/10 64-Bit
  • Processor: Intel i3-4150, AMD Ryzen 3 1200
  • Graphics Card: Geforce GT 730, Radeon R7 240
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • VRAM: 1GB
  • Storage Space: At least 10GB
  • Operating System: Windows 7/8/10 64-Bit

If you’re wanting to give yourself the competitive edge in Valorant, then you’ll want to try and aim for a 144 FPS framerate. Of course, you’ll only be able to get the full benefit of this if you have a compatible display/ monitor, so keep this in mind.

Destroy All Humans! 2: Reprobed Review – From Russia, With Love, Again

1 year 8 months ago

Destroy All Humans! 2: Reprobed on PS5

2005 introduced sixth-generation gamers to Destroy All Humans!, a parody of Cold War-era films centered around alien invasion. The franchise saw moderate success until it was put on ice indefinitely after publisher THQ went bankrupt, leaving protagonist Cryptosporidium and Orthropox floating in a space of nothingness for 12 years. Nordic Games came along and purchased the rights to the franchise, rebranded to THQ Nordic, and gave the series new life with developer Black Forest Games at the helm of a remake of the first title, Destroy All Humans!

You’re probably wondering what the long backstory has to do with any of this, and if you’re a fan of the alien invader parody, you kind of know where this is headed. A solid showing from two remakes most certainly means gamers could see a much-needed revival and a possibility of a brand new entry, right? Well, before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s take a trip to the past in the swinging 60s.

Set 10 years after the first title, Crypto has replaced the US government and is enjoying the peace, love, and positivity of the 1960s. However, it isn’t very long before this utopia is disturbed by the KGB, and our hero discovers a sinister plot unfolding under his very eyes. Crypto sets out on a globe-trotting adventure to stop the Soviets while spreading his own proper form of alien peace, love, and positivity. The story itself is pretty wonky, but for these games, it’s par for the course as it intends to parody the period it’s set in.

Amazon EA Acquisition Rumors Spark Confusion

1 year 8 months ago

Update 08/26/2022, 09:00: USA Today's report claiming that Amazon would today make an offer to buy Electronic Arts (EA) has been retracted, with the journalist behind the article also expressing doubt over its accuracy.

The original report was updated multiple times in the hours after CNBC disputed its reporting, slowly but surely stepping away from its fairly explicit declaration that Amazon would make EA an offer.

"Earlier today, GLHF - a gaming/e-sports outlet and content partner of [USA Today's] For The Win - ran a version of this story on our website that violated our editorial standards regarding the use of unnamed and unvetted sources," the page now reads.

Kirk McKeand, the journalist behind the article, also said on Twitter: "If you get something wrong in games journalism, it's a bit like when you work behind a bar and drop a pint glass, and everyone cheers. Except, instead of cheering, they chuck more pint glasses at you."

He continued: "Also, CNBC said 'it isn't happening today', which isn't the same as 'it isn't happening'. And if I turn out to be wrong, then I was wrong. It happens. It's the first time it's happened to me with a report like this, but it was bound to happen eventually."

Original Story: Video game industry media was sent into a tailspin earlier today, August 26, after a USA Today report claimed Amazon was planning to make an offer to purchase publishing giant EA. Conflicting reports have now emerged from CNBC, however, that say there are no acquisition plans in place.

In Snaccoon, You Are a Hungry Raccoon Seeking Snacks

1 year 8 months ago

Snaccoon

One surprise from Gamescom's Future Games Show, held on August 24, 2022, was Snaccoon, a new game that casts players as a hungry raccoon. It's being developed by Christian Sparks. Otherwise a member of Hyper Light Drifter and Solar Ash developer Heart Machine, Sparks originally began the project as a hobby to occupy his time amid disruptions to work from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the game has entered fuller development and debuted with its first teaser trailer. Commentators online drew comparisons to BlueTwelve's Stray, a cyberpunk cat game.

Check it out below.

In Snaccoon, players play as a hungry raccoon born with the misfortune to live in a city that has banned all snack foods. Of course, prohibition tends to drive that which is prohibited underground rather than stop it, and the raccoon stumbles on a black market of cake and chip sales. Possessed of "above-average intelligence" and an iron resolve, the raccoon must enter the black market to obtain the delectable goods. But the market demands goods for trade, and the raccoon will need to change from "trash panda" to "bandit vermin", stealing items of value to trade in an elaborate series of deals. The final prize? A box of its favorite treats.

Rollerdrome review: a difficult but stylish skater-shooter that'll give you a shot of adrenaline

1 year 8 months ago

Rollerdrome is an all-action skater/shooter set in a dystopian, but near, future. Protagonist Kara Hassan is the newest competitor in Matterhorn’s games, hosted by the corrupt International Rollerdrome Federation. Your job is to skate through 12 intense arena maps battling both the house players and yourself, dodging attacks as you replenish your ammo with sick tricks to stay in the fight. With enough combo multipliers and top completion times, you might come out as the champion.

Wild Arms and Shadow Hearts creators are back with two new JRPGs

1 year 8 months ago

It's been a hot minute since I last crossed paths with JRPG series Wild Arms and Shadow Hearts, but today the key creators behind both of these late 90s and early 00s RPGs have announced they're making two brand-new JRPGs that are inspired by their previous works - and they're launching a 'double Kickstarter' campaign to help fund them. The games are called Penny Blood and Armed Fantasia (no points for guessing who's making what), and based on what I've seen so far, I'm intrigued.

WD's Black SN770 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is down to £84 for a 1TB size

1 year 8 months ago

The WD Black SN770 is a good middle-of-the-road PCIe 4.0 SSD, outperforming PCIe 3.0 SSDs while costing less than the very fastest PCIe 4.0 models. It launched at £125 for a 1TB size earlier this year, but now it's down to £84 where it's rather more fetching. The 2TB size has also been reduced and is even better value at £152. Here's why we rate these SSDs - and where to find them at the lowest price.

Let's do the 'where to find them' bit first. It's quite simple: WD's UK store is offering the 1TB at the best price right now, while Ebuyer is the place to go if you'd prefer the larger 2TB model.
