I was a Teenage Exocolonist explores the hidden mechanics of memory

1 year 8 months ago

I can't work out whether there are an unusual number of games concerned with memory being released this year, or if I'm just at the right moment in my life to notice them all. Anyway, to add to Hindsight and Arcade Paradise, here's another. I Was a Teenage Exocolonist is the story of a child growing up amongst a group of people who are trying to make a new life on a distant planet. If you put the science fiction elements aside, though, it's a game that explores the many ways in which our past experiences shape us. In other words, it's a game about memory.

It's a systems-heavy game, but as I've been playing the last few days I've been trying to look through that layer to get at the things I suspect the game truly seems to want me to see. In Exocolonist, you take your child from the age of ten up until they're twenty. That's it. But that's also quite a lot, because I'm not sure there's a decade more packed with foundational events than the years between your tenth birthday and your twentieth.

Exocolonist takes things slowly, too, with the rhythm of the game locked to the changing seasons of the planet you're trying to make a life on. This is lovely, atmospheric stuff, as Quiet gives way to Pollen, and it's neatly functional too. Each month you wander around the base, talk to the adults and any kids who are growing up alongside you, and you choose a single task to do.

Who Are the Cover Athletes in NHL 23? Answered

1 year 8 months ago

In the athletic world, gracing the cover of the video game for your respective sport is one of the biggest things you can accomplish in your career. That statement is no different for hockey players, as its been shown that skaters are huge fans of the NHL series. With that in mind, you’re probably wondering who the cover athletes are in NHL 23. Here is everything you need to know.

NHL 23 Cover Athletes

Cutting right to the chase, this year, NHL 23 has two athletes on the cover, Sarah Nurse and Trevor Zegras. The former is a forward for the Canadian National Team, and also the first female to ever grace the cover in franchise history, while the latter is a center for the Anaheim Ducks.

For a little bit more on each of these athletes, including the teams they play for and at what position, you can check out their official bios right down below.

Sarah Nurse – Forward, Canadian National Team

Canadian international Sarah Nurse makes history just about every time she steps onto the ice; most notably, she broke the record for most points scored in a single Olympic hockey tournament (male or female) in the 2022 Games. Nurse captured numerous gold medals with Canadian youth squads, and earned a silver medal with Canada in the 2018 Olympics after a shootout victory against the United States.

She may be a seasoned veteran of the international game, but Sarah Nurse is just getting started. She’s making history with EA SPORTS as the very first female player to be featured on the official worldwide cover of an NHL game. Between her phenomenal shooting ability and her uncanny ability to read the game, Nurse is an absolute powerhouse that any HUT player will want in their lineup.

Where to Get Luminescent Pollen in Genshin Impact

1 year 8 months ago

The latest update for Genshin Impact brings with it a sizable amount of content, not least of which is new ascension tiers to unlock for characters and weapons. These utilize a variety of materials, and one, in particular, you might struggle to find is Luminescent Pollen. Fortunately, we’ve done the leg work for you and compiled this guide on where to get Luminescent Pollen in Genshin Impact.

How to Get Luminescent Pollen in Genshin Impact

Like other materials in the game, there are two key methods for getting Luminescent Pollen in Genshin Impact. The first is to get it as a drop from Sumeru’s Fungi enemies that are level 40 or higher.

The elemental variant of the Fungi doesn’t affect the drop rate, so you won’t need to limit yourself to a specific spawn area. We recommend grinding through the smaller Fungi enemies whenever possible, though, as they’re easier to kill and can allow you to farm up resources with minimal hassle.

The other method is to craft Luminescent Pollen. You’ll need 3 Fungal Spores and 50 Mora to make one helping of Luminescent Pollen, but you can replicate this method as many times as you wish.

Fungal Spores are easy enough to get as drops from any Fungi enemies, while Mora should be raining on you like a monsoon if you’ve been playing long enough. As such, you should have no problem acquiring a surplus of Luminescent Pollen with a few hours of grinding.

Is Bungie Down? How To Check Bungie & Destiny 2 Companion App Server Status

1 year 8 months ago

Server issues are kind of just a given with how modern video games work. However, they are the least troublesome issue because it’s nothing the players need to fix themselves, but they are still annoying. Still, it is always good to be aware of when a game’s servers are having issues. Here’s how to check the Bungie and Destiny 2 Companion app server status to see if they are down.

How to Check Bungie & Destiny 2 Companion App Servers

The first stop you’ll want to make when trying to figure out anything about server issues will be the Destiny Server and Update Status page on the Bungie website. This will let you know about any maintenance happening and possible issues.

You can also check out the @BungieHelp Twitter account that will announce any known issues.

If that didn’t answer any questions, the next best place is Downdetector. While it won’t give you any sort of idea on a fix, the site works by taking reports from other players, so it will let you know for sure that the problem isn’t only affecting you.

Where to Get Crystalline Cyst Dust in Genshin Impact

1 year 8 months ago

Another update for Genshin Impact means another round of hunting for ascension materials for characters and weapons. While some can be a cinch to find, others can drive you mad with how little of the stuff you can seem to find. Crystalline Cyst Dust can definitely be one of these materials, which is why we’ve constructed this guide on where to get Crystalline Cyst Dust in Genshin Impact.

How to Find Crystalline Cyst Dust in Genshin Impact

You’ll be able to use a couple of different methods to get Crystalline Cyst Dust in Genshin Impact. The first and most straightforward is to defeat Fungi enemies who are at level 60 or higher.

The material can drop from any variant of Sumeru’s Fungi enemies so long as they’re in the appropriate level range, too, so you can have a wide swath of different areas to go to for farming. We had the best luck with the smaller variants of Fungi, as they were the easiest to defeat quickly.

Likewise, you can craft Crystalline Cyst Dust using 3 Luminescent Pollen and 50 Mora. Luminescent Pollen can be obtained by defeating level 40 or higher Fungi enemies, while Mora should be overflowing out of your pockets after a few skirmishes or opened treasure chests.

By utilizing these methods, you should have plenty of Crystalline Cyst Dust in only a few short play sessions and can put them to good use in no time.

Does Dead by Daylight Have Cross-Play? Answered

1 year 8 months ago

Dead by Daylight is by far the most popular multiplayer game out there for horror aficionados and has gone from strength to strength since it first launched in 2016. The game sees players band together in teams of four as they are hunted down by horror icons like Ghost Face, Michael Myers, and Freddy Kreuger. There has been a substantial amount of updates over the years that makes the game better than ever to play in 2022, but maybe you’re wondering whether you can play with friends across different consoles. Here’s everything we know about whether Dead by Daylight has cross-play.

Does Dead by Daylight Have Cross-Play?

Dead by Daylight does have cross-play, but there are a few conditions. The feature was first introduced in 2020 due to the high demand from players and currently supports every major platform, with the exception of mobile devices.

Currently, there are no plans to expand crossplay to mobile, and it doesn’t seem like that will be changing anytime soon. Behaviour Interactive, the devs behind Dead by Daylight, has previously claimed that the progression and controls in the mobile version are what prevent it from expanding to cross-play.

Puzzle game OU dreams of being a modern spin on The Neverending Story

1 year 8 months ago

Nostalgic yet unknown is perhaps a good way to describe OU upon first glance. It’s a game clearly designed to mimic the picture book imagination of childhood with its hand-drawn visuals and the innocent silent presence of its protagonist, a young boy named OU and his opossum friend. Even its music is reminiscent of some lost, unknown childhood as we’re lulled into the strange world of U-Chronia with the smooth instrumentation of a single guitar and its occasional percussion. Yet it’s clear with the presence of beasts that threaten your safety and a shadowy clone that this isn’t some peaceful retreat into childhood.

The singleplayer spaceship shooter hit Game Pass in June, and all you need to know is: once you power through the boring bit, you get to play as a spacewitch pilot who fights with guns and magic while weaving through the innards of battleships and megastructures. It's one of those good 7/10 games.

Following Netflix's announcement earlier this year that it's adapting Irrational Games' acclaimed shooter BioShock into a live-action film, the streaming service has revealed it's now secured a writer and director for the project.

When word of the BioShock adaptation first broke in February, there was little to go on beyond the fact it was being developed alongside publisher Take-Two and Vertigo Entertainment with an eye on turning it into a cinematic universe.

Now, though, Netflix has revealed that two key roles on the project have now been filled, with Francis Lawrence having signed on in the director role.

Are Xbox Series X|S Price Hikes Next? Microsoft Says No

1 year 8 months ago

Earlier this week, Sony fans were greeted with some unsettling news, as it was revealed that PS5 prices would be increasing in certain markets due to inflation. Ever since this came about, Xbox fans began to worry that the Xbox Series X|S might suffer a similar fate.

Thankfully, it seems that fans of this console are safe from increased pricing, at least for the time being. This news comes by way of a statement made to Windows Central, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that there are no plans to raise the price of the Xbox Series X or the Xbox Series

“We are constantly evaluating our business to offer our fans great gaming options. Our Xbox Series S suggested retail price remains at $299 (£250, €300) the Xbox Series X is $499 (£450, €500).”

While it is always possible that plans could change, especially given the volatility of the economy, for now, it seems like Microsoft is sticking to its customer-friendly approach to business. The company has built up a much more positive reputation with gamers in recent years, especially since they’ve chosen to focus a lot of their efforts on building Xbox Game Pass, a platform that gives players access to hundreds of games for as low as $9.99 a month.

If anything does change, we will be sure to keep you posted. For now, feel free to check out all of the other Xbox and Microsoft-related content we’ve got for you in the articles down below.

To better understand the DualSense Edge, let’s take a look at the specs (so far), dig into its standout features, and see how it compares to the Xbox Elite Series 2, in addition to the base DualSense and Xbox wireless controllers.

Microsoft Confirms No Price Increase for Xbox Series X and S

1 year 8 months ago

Following the news that Sony will increase the price of the PlayStation 5 in several markets, Microsoft has confirmed that it is not planning similar moves to adjust the price of the Xbox Series X and S.

In a statement to Windows Central, Microsoft confirmed that there are no plans to raise the price of the Xbox Series X or Series S and that the consoles will remain at their current price in the US, UK, and Europe.

Microsoft says the Series S suggested retail price will remain at $299 and the Series X will remain at $499.

The statement follows the news from earlier that Sony will be adjusting the price of the PlayStation 5 in Europe, the UK, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Canada. In a PlayStation Blog, the company announced a ~$50 price increase for the PlayStation 5 and PS5 Digital Edition in numerous markets citing the global inflation rate and "adverse currency trends," as the reason.

For example in the UK, the PS5 with a disc drive will now cost £479.99, up from £449.99 and the Digital Edition costs £389.99, up from £359.99.

Sony isn't the only hardware manufacturer to increase the price of its system as a result of the global economy. Meta announced earlier this year that it will increase the price of its popular Meta Quest 2 VR headset by $100.

The Great War: Western Front aims to capture WW1’s brutal battles of attrition

1 year 8 months ago

Not that all the other wars were just a bit of goofing around, but World War One – a conflict remembered more for its bleak, arduous trench warfare than any great triumph over evil – seems like a particularly unusual source of inspiration for a strategy game that will, presumably, be played for fun. Nonetheless, The Great War: Western Front, a combination of macro planning and tactical RTS battling revealed this week at Gamescom, has elected to lean right into WW1’s complexities and difficulties rather than dance around them.

Developers Petroglyph have gone for historical accuracy in various ways, senior designer Chris Becker and audio director Frank Klepacki explain to me at a hands-off demo in Cologne. The soundtrack will even include licensed music from the era. But something they want to really hammer home is the brutality of the war: territory won’t be won in heroic pushes but slowly and bloodily, while collapsing morale is as much a danger as any advancing army.

That increase affects both the disc and disc-less models of PS5, and equates to £30 in the UK and €50 in Europe - with similar bumps occurring in Japan, China, Australia, Mexico, and Canada, but not the US for the time being.

WB Games Chief Says Division Has 'Critically Important' Role to Play Amid Internal Shakeups

1 year 8 months ago

It's been a rough time for Warner Bros. Discovery, which has dealt with delays and cancellations amid the fallout from its merger, but at least one divison appears to still doing well.

In a new interview with Axios Gaming, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment chief David Haddad touted the divisions recent successes, which include Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and Multiversus. Both games have managed to sell tens of millions of units while garnering solid reviews.

According to Haddad, the division is profitable and does not look likely to suffer the sort of layoffs and cancellations that have impacted other parts of WB Discovery.

"I do believe, especially moving forward, that we have a critically important role to play inside the company," Haddad said.

According to Haddad, WB Discovery has expressed "a strong belief in the growth of the games business and being part of that overall company strategy."

This would seem to temporarily put to rest rumors that studios within WB Games — which include the likes of NetherRealm and Rocksteady — were for sale following WB Discovery's merger. Xbox and PlayStation were rumored to be among the groups interested in such an acquisition. Previous owner AT&T reportedly attempted to sell WB Games for $4 billion in 2020.

All Small Council Members in House of the Dragon

1 year 8 months ago

In the Seven Kingdoms, the ruling king (or queen) has, for the most part, ultimate power. That’s why the Iron Throne can be both a force for good and evil; it gives the one sitting upon the throne incredible control over their underlings. However, there is a measure of checks and balances. In House of the Dragon, King Viserys I Targaryen has a small council, each member focused on one aspect of ruling the realm and advises the king on what they think is the best course of action. Here are all small council members in House of the Dragon.

All Small Council Members in House of the Dragon

Other than King Viserys I Targaryen, there are a total of six members on the small council in House of the Dragon, noted by a small, unique orb they bring with them when council is in session. The small council consists of:
