Pokémon Go celebrates sixth anniversary with teases for coming year

1 year 9 months ago

It's been six years since that initial summer of Pokémon Go, where we all wandered around hunting Vaporeon and the world seemed a sunnier place.

To celebrate this latest anniversary, Pokémon Go maker Niantic has released another of its annual celebratory artworks - which regularly tease what the next 12 months may bring.

Pokémon fans have been poring over the image, though the most noticable additions here are two brand-new characters - potentially the game's next two NPCs.

Final Fantasy 14 players hosting an in-game nightclub event advertised on real life billboards, sending the community into a spin.

Nightclub events and parties are common in the MMORPG, often with DJ sets on Twitch.

But owners of the Rain Nightclub bought four billboards in Texas and California to advertise their event, which included modded outfits and use of the Final Fantasy 14 logo (thanks PCGamer).

Witch Strandings review: a cursed, but magical Strand-like

1 year 9 months ago

In the 100 or so hours I've spent playing Death Stranding in the last couple of years, I've often wondered about the state of Sam Bridges' limbs. Specifically, the strain they must be under carrying those preposterously high columns of metal cased packages up and down the slopes of post-apocalyptic America. If I were in his hiking boots, I'm not sure all the reinforced skeletons in the world would help me reach the same kind of porter-ing skills as he does gambolling about the place, at least not based on how sore and tired my dinky little wrists are after a couple of hours of playing Strange Scaffold's new Strand-type game, Witch Strandings. Yes, that's right. Someone other than Hideo Kojima has made a so-called Strand-like, and it's quite possibly the strangest game you'll play all year.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On Review – Does Everybody Love Marcel?

1 year 9 months ago

When I saw the marketing for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, I couldn’t help but notice that they kept stressing the line, “Everybody Loves Marcel.” They even had it up on the screen at the screening that I attended.

This made two questions immediately come to my mind: “Is Marcel truly as lovable as is being said?” and “Just because the main character is lovable, does that mean that the movie will be enjoyable no matter what?” I bring these two questions up right off the bat because I feel that they are incredibly important when looking at both my review and also the film itself.

For those who aren’t aware of what the movie is about or who Marcel is, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On follows the titular character of Marcel, who lives with his grandmother in a home that is now being rented out as an Airbnb. Dean, a recently divorced man who is now renting the Airbnb, discovers Marcel and, being the amateur filmmaker that he is, decides to start making a documentary about Marcel, which becomes a viral sensation.

Sometime between Avengers: Age of Ultron and Thor: Ragnarok, Thor and Jane broke up. The actual reasons as to why they broke up are unknown, but it may have been because of Jane being busy with work and Thor not always being around, being a superhero and all.

Preview: Live A Live is a JRPG Short Story Collection

1 year 9 months ago

live a live preview

Live A Live, an “HD-2D” remake of the 16-bit RPG, is a particularly special release in the West. While Japanese audiences may have some nostalgia for the original game, this marks the first international appearance for a Square RPG from an era full of beloved releases from the company. In the game’s early hours, we’ve grown to appreciate the game’s distinct elements.

The original Live A Live, released on the Super Famicom in 1994, was an experimental release. It remains so in its updated form! It’s an anthology of short stories from different creators, all built within the same RPG engine and using the same tactical battle system. The structure is built to tell specific, short narratives. It’s not a package full of nuance and depth. Instead, it offers a variety of smaller tales that are often homages to popular genres.

live a live preview distant future

Each chapter has its own setting and feel. The Twilight of Edo Japan is a sneaking mission to assassinate an enemy leader. It’s lonely and tense. You're largely alone, and you can get through the whole thing without taking a lot of lives with careful use of the hide button. The Wild West is a classic cowboy tale, with shootouts and standoffs. It’s largely built around prepping a town with traps to fight off a bandit gang within a time limit. You learn about the strengths and weaknesses of the townsfolk, mostly by them just telling you they're bad at stuff.

New Horizon Forbidden West Patch Adds VRR, ‘Balanced’ Graphics Mode, And More

Horizon Forbidden West Patch 1.17 VRR Graphics Mode

Guerrilla Games and PlayStation have been steady at work, making Horizon Forbidden West an even better game than it was at launch with updates that add transmog, fix visual shimmering, improve graphics, and more. Months later, the team is still adding new things to the game, which is exactly what today’s Patch 1.17 does for the open-world RPG.

More specifically, Patch 1.17 brings three new things to the game: variable refresh rate (VRR) support, high refresh rate (HFR) support, and a new “Balanced” graphics mode that introduces a 40Hz refresh rate for displays that support it.

Sword and Fairy: Together Forever - The Final Preview

1 year 9 months ago

Sword and Fairy is a franchise that may not be well-known outside of the East, but it is a long-running beloved and notable series that has only finally made its way west in recent years. While many of them are well-received and technically available to play, most are only in Chinese, requiring fan translations for Western gamers to be able to experience them. Sword and Fairy: Together Forever (aka Sword and Fairy 7) is making a jump to try and be a better-recognized Eastern Action-RPG series. After playing the first two hours on PlayStation 5, Sword and Fairy did take my interest as a game I want to see through to the end, despite its obvious shortcomings.

The very first thing worth mentioning is that while this is a western localization, the entire game is spoken in Chinese. There are subtitles for dialogue, but even so I did have some issues at times. When dialogue would advance on its own there were instances when I wasn’t able to finish reading it in time. I also noticed grammatical errors every now and then. To a certain degree, I can appreciate the authenticity that is being presented, but this may cause a real fundamental problem for some players.

Although it is an ongoing series, Sword and Fairy: Together Forever serves as its own self-contained story, so for those who want to give it a try, there is no required knowledge needed to fully enjoy what is offered. The story revolves around a young woman named Qingshu, a practitioner of the sword who helps protect her local village from monsters. It isn’t until she rescues a mysterious boy that she is flung into an ongoing war between deities and demons…naturally.

Nintendo Reveals the First Special Edition Nintendo Switch OLED

1 year 9 months ago

Nintendo has revealed its first special edition OLED Nintendo Switch, themed around Splatoon 3.

Announced on Nintendo's YouTube channel, the Splatoon 3 console comes with a unique dock and Joy-Con controllers that all feature the game's graffiti-esque artwork alongside, naturally, a splash of ink. The dock itself is white with a yellow splat while the left Joy-Con is navy blue blending into purple and the right is yellow blending into green.

The console will be released on August 26 but, as this is two weeks before Splatoon 3's release date of September 9, it will not come with a copy of the game.

The Splatoon 3-themed Nintendo Switch OLED model will retail for $359.99 — $10 more than the standard Switch OLED model.

It's released a handful of limited-edition versions of the original Switch, including one for Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee, one for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and another for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Forspoken Delayed to January 2023

1 year 9 months ago

Square Enix's upcoming action-RPG Forspoken has been delayed to January 24, 2023.

Announced on Twitter, developer Luminous Productions explained that the decision was "a result of ongoing discussions with key partners", and reassured fans that the game is "in its final polishing phase." It's possible that the decision has been made to move the release of the new IP away from other major game releases.

The delay announcement also says that the game will receive a further showing "later this Summer".

Forspoken was originally due to be released on October 11. That date itself followed a delay, after the game was originally announced for May 25. Incidentally, that first delay message also said that the extra months would be used for polishing the game.

The PS5 and PC game was announced in 2020, but has been notably quiet. In a hands-off preview last year, we said that the game – which is being created primarily by Final Fantasy 15 developers – has an "off-kilter take on the JRPG formula," and "looks more like an open-world RPG in the vein of Assassin’s Creed and The Witcher than anything I’ve previously seen from Square Enix."

Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard under investigation from UK regulator

This investigation will allow the company to decide whether or not Microsoft's deal to purchase Activision Blizzard could be deemed anti-competitive.

"As with all merger reviews, this investigation will consider whether the deal could harm competition and lead to worse outcomes for consumers -- for example, through higher prices, lower quality, or reduced choice," the CMA said today (via GamesIndustry.biz).

Elden Ring has taught me to be a little less frugal

1 year 9 months ago

You might recall that not too long ago, I hit the Elden Ring exhaustion point. Pre-heating the oven and a rigorous badminton schedule didn't mingle too well with an open world that demanded every ounce of my concentration. I went MIA from the Lands Between for three months, spending my time watching cushy reality TV like Below Deck Mediterranean and lying in my bed, hoping its springs would somehow channel electricity into my bones and recharge my weary mind.

Over the past few days I've returned to the Lands Between with renewed vigor. I've taken a dustpan and brush to the map, sweeping up optional bosses and forts and quests with the wild energy of a cleaner who mustn't stop for even a second. In doing everything it takes to finish this game before I burn out again, I've learned the importance of investment and why spending is good, actually.

RPS GOTY Revisited: 2009's Dragon Age: Origins may not have been the best that year, but what a world

1 year 9 months ago

Dragon Age is one of my favourite game series. I replayed Dragon Age: Origins recently not for this column, but for fun. That's the kind of wild gal I am. Origins was one of the reasons I got into PC gaming, because my dinky laptop wasn't good enough to run it and I was desperate to play it after seeing the trailers. I spaffed some of my student loan on a new desktop and spent four months eating nothing but cheese sandwiches. At the time it felt worth it. Watching those trailers now is like opening a time capsule full of fantasy tropes and, for some reason, an incongruous chugging guitar song by someone we don't need to mention ever again.

Replaying it now is a different experience. It's still a really cool RPG, notable for very good world-building and a cast of interesting characters (that you can have sex with in a cold tent), and it continues to hold a dear place in my heart. On the other hand, there's a whole section that's such a mind-numbing slog to get through that everyone hates it and there's a mod specifically to remove it from the entire game. Origins is a game I very much like, yet sometimes struggle to explain why it is good. But I'm not alone in thinking so, 'cos in 2009 this was RPS's Game Of The Year. Can't blame me for that. I didn't even work here then.

Is Valorant on Xbox?

1 year 9 months ago

[Updated July 6, 2022]

Riot Games’ free-to-play 5v5 tactical hero-shooter, Valorant, has proved incredibly succesful since its release back in 2020. With its explosive popularity on PC, many players out there are wondering if you can get Valorant on Xbox. Worry not, as we’re here with the definitive answer. So, without further ado, let’s get started, shall we?

Is Valorant Coming to Xbox?

During the recent Xbox and Bethesda showcase, Riot Games announced that Valorant will indeed be coming to Xbox platforms, with a day-and-date launch on Xbox Game Pass as well. Currently, there’s no firm release date, but rumours speculate that a Q3 2022 release date is on the cards.

This means that Valorant could potentially release on Xbox platforms somewhere between July at the earliest, or September at the latest.

As soon as we hear more, though, we’ll make sure to update this post with the most up-to-date information.

Right now, Valorant is only currently available on PC. If you’re wondering when Valorant is coming to Xbox, we’re sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but no Xbox version is available at the moment. As mentioned above, though, there is a plan to bring the popular hero-shooter to Xbox platforms at some point in the future.

Interestingly, there is, however, a mobile version of Valorant slated to come to iOS and Android devices in the near future, too. Unfortunately, there’s no concrete release date for it at the moment.

5 Letter Words Starting with FLU – Wordle Game Help

1 year 9 months ago

To give you a much-needed hand to help you continue your streak, we’ve got every 5 letter word that starts with FLU that you can enter in the game below.

Today’s Wordle answer is a bit of a doozy. It’s arguably one of the hardest the game has ever offered with a word that many people won’t even think of.

All Five-Letter Words Starting with ‘FLU’

There are only 16 5-letter words that start with FLU that are recognized by Wordle and can be submitted as an answer. These are:

  • flubs
  • flued
  • flues
  • fluff
  • fluid
  • fluke
  • fluky
  • flume
  • flump
  • flung
  • flunk
  • fluor
  • flush
  • flute
  • fluty
  • fluyt

Once you’ve found the word you want to try from the list above, simply enter it with the on-screen keyboard (or the one for your PC/ laptop) and then press the ‘Enter’ key or button in the bottom left-hand corner.

Given there are only 16 possible words that it could be, it shouldn’t take you too long to figure out which one it is, especially if you’ve already used some guesses to eliminate other common letters in the above words.

Any letters that turns green are in the today’s Wordle answer and are also in the correct position. For any letters that turn yellow, they feature in the answer, but aren’t in the correct position.

That’s everything you need to know on all 5 letter words starting with FLU for you to try in Wordle. Looking for more word-based brainteaser help? Be sure to check out the links below.

Forspoken Delayed to January 24, 2023, Due to “Strategic Decision.”

1 year 9 months ago

Square Enix announced a delay of its upcoming action JRPG Forspoken.

The announcement was made on Twitter mentioning that as a result of ongoing discussions with key partners, the publisher has made the “strategic decision” to change the release date to January 24, 2023.

Interestingly, the announcement goes on to say that all game elements are complete and the development is in the final polishing phase.

The game is slated to release on PS5 and PC.

The wording of the message appears to indicate that the delay may possibly be tied to the fact that Square Enix simply had too many games releasing in a similar timeframe.

Forspoken was slated to launch on October 11, 2022, following a first delay.

Is Goku Coming to Fortnite? Answered

1 year 9 months ago

Rumors are swirling that another familiar face might be on its way to Epic Games’ everpopular battle royale game. If you’re wondering whether Goku is coming to Fortnite then we’re here to break everything down for you.

A huge part of Fortnite’s continued success is due to Epic Games’ incredible post-launch support of the game, which has included consistent updates and numerous crossover events. Fortnite has become so much more than a battle royale title over the years, creating something of a meta for itself as characters from all across pop culture have found their way into the game. Now, it looks as though Dragon Ball Z’s Goku might be next.

Is Dragon Ball’s Goku Coming to Fortnite?

Well, that’s if leaks from datamined game files prove correct. HYPEX, a well-known dataminer in the Fortnite community, noted over on Twitter that a new cel-shaded Creative prop called the ‘Stamina Container’ sports a logo nearly identical to that of the ‘Capsule Corp’ logo from the Dragon Ball franchise. It’s also surrounded by the same anime outline as other anime cosmetics seen in Fortnite previously, such as Naruto.

So, what could this mean? Could Goku be coming to Fortnite, or is this a more general tease for a Dragon Ball Z crossover event of some kind?
