Welcome to a new series on Eurogamer: State of the Game

1 year 9 months ago

Hello! We have a new series for you. It's called State of the Game and the goal is, basically, to tell you exactly that. Over the next couple of months we'll be running a series of features that dig into the biggest, most interesting and most influential live service games that are running at the moment.

Naturally, the words "live service" give some people the ick, and that's fair enough - but it's also the type of game where vast numbers of players want to spend their time, and the type of game that, in bottling the magic of fun-with-friends, can often capture the very best of the medium.

It's also an area that's been quite tricky to adequately cover here on Eurogamer. To borrow a phrase, these are 'hobby-grade' games - games that often demand extraordinary amounts of time or attention - and so keeping up with them all in sufficient detail quickly becomes impossible. The focus, naturally, falls on the biggest controversies or the most sweeping changes, when a lot of the really special stuff is found in the detail. It's also hard to know what on earth people are talking about when they do write about them, if you're not already immersed in the games yourself.

FFXIV Data Center Travel Suspended Due to Congestion

FFXIV Data Center Travel Suspended Due to Congestion

Square Enix suspended the FFXIV Data Center Travel feature immediately after launch due to congestion. The company noted that, after it arrived with update 6.18, visit requests were at 15,000 per minute. As such, it is temporarily disallowing the option.

The FFXIV Data Center Travel congestion issues kicked off almost immediately after the feature became available. Early on July 5, 2022, Square Enix alerted people to problems. It also took to Twitter to explain what people could expect while the service was still live. It noted that any world ends up billed as "congested," then no one will be able to visit it.

The FFXIV issues also led to an update on Japanese, North American, and European worlds. At time of writing, Balmung on Crystal was congested in North America. In Europe, Louisoix and Spriggan on Chaos and Phoenix and Zodiark on Light wouldn’t allow new character creation. In Japan, Tonberry, Typhon, Bahamut, Durandal, Ridill, Ixion, Masamune, Pandaemonium, Mandragora, Shinryu, Unicorn, and Zeromus all were labeled as “congested.”

Battlefield Will Seemingly Reintroduce a Single Player Campaign in Future Games

1 year 9 months ago

EA's Battlefield series will seemingly return to including single player campaigns, according to a new job listing at the publisher's Seattle-based studio.

While we already knew that Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto was leading a Battlefield universe project at the Seattle studio, the job listing for a design director specifically mentions the creation of "a new Battlefield campaign".

As reported by VGC, the design director will be responsible for "creating a best-in-class single player campaign experience" with a "player-first mentality, motivated by a passionate aim to understand and serve the players who are engaged with the game". The ideal candidate must have a "passion and understanding of single player campaigns and how to innovate within that space."

Battlefield 2042 - the latest game in the series that has had a fairly turbulent post-release period - didn't feature a campaign at all, while other recent entries such as Battlefield V have opted for shorter single player portions or multiplayer-blended campaigns.

NBA 2K23 Is Putting Michael Jordan On the Cover While Bringing Back the Iconic Jordan Challenges

1 year 9 months ago

Basketball legend Michael Jordan will be the cover star of NBA 2K23's special editions and 2K is bringing back the iconic Jordan Challenges to celebrate. The publisher also confirmed a September 9 release date and announced the six-time NBA champion will grace the covers of the aptly named Michael Jordan Edition and the limited Championship Edition.

Jordan was chosen not only because 2K23 matches his iconic jersey number but also, 2K said, because his spirit matches the theme of this year's MyPlayer campaign mode: Answer the Call. "After making 23 the most recognizable number in sports, it was only fitting that for NBA 2K23 we introduce the Michael Jordan Edition," said Alfie Brody, vice president of global marketing strategy for NBA 2K.

While the prices of these editions wasn't revealed - nor the standard edition's cover star - last year's special edition (likely the Michael Jordan edition tier) was $99.99 compared to the standard's price of $59.99/$69.99 depending on the console generation.

The Championship Edition, however, is a brand new tier of NBA 2K editions that comes with a year's subscription to NBA League Pass, which grants access to every actual, real-life NBA game on TV. Given this is $50 by itself, those looking to buy this most expensive edition should expect a hefty price hike.

Here, we’ve compiled 12 images of well-known but not necessarily official Valorant map callouts that should be familiar to those who play Valorant regularly. Street Fighter 6’s Modern Controls Make It Fun To Play Against Rookies

1 year 9 months ago

Stop me if you've heard this one before, fighting game fans. You invite a friend over to play your fighting game of choice. This buddy is either rusty or has never played it, but that's okay; they just want to have a good time throwing hands. To accommodate them, you purposely assume a weaker form, unleashing only 5 percent of your true power to avoid obliterating them while they haplessly button-mash in a futile attempt to stay competitive.

Laughs can be had but holding back so much isn't necessarily fun because you want to go full force. If you're in that friend's shoes, you wish you could play more competently much quicker to avoid feeling inferior and babysat. As a fighting game fan, I've been on both sides of this situation, and neither is ideal. That's why Street Fighter 6's Modern control scheme is an excellent solution to this age-old problem.

For the unfamiliar, Street Fighter's upcoming entry introduces an optional button layout dubbed "Modern." While I'm not a fan of the name ("Simplified" or "Streamlined" would better communicate its purpose), I adore the concept. This option eases execution by mapping special attacks to a single button combined with a directional input. The in-game description states that the Modern scheme is "designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move combinations first." It's a fantastic remedy for easing newcomers into the typically intimidating genre.

Haunted Chocolatier: Feed That Eerie Craving With What We Know So Far

1 year 9 months ago

My first definitive verification of Haunted Chocolatier came straight from the source as I sat down with developer Eric Barone, AKA ConcernedApe, to look over Stardew Valley’s remarkable success. He touched briefly on his upcoming projects (yes, plural projects) and was happy to report that the game likely to come out first – Haunted Chocolatier – is a solo endeavor. Despite the lack of specifics, I was thrilled to hear the indie creator’s next project was in the works.

Then he surprised everyone. Barone publicly shared early Haunted Chocolatier gameplay footage, and it looked incredible. The art style immediately evoked Barone’s first title, though the developer made it clear fans shouldn’t expect the same experience.

“In Stardew Valley,” Barone writes in his news blog, “the focus was more humble: living off the land, growing food, and connecting to the people and nature around you. However, with my next game, I wanted to explore more fantastical possibilities… experiences that take you beyond the ordinary. That’s where magical haunted ghost chocolate comes in.”

Chainsaw Man Power and Pochita Figure Pre-Orders Open

1 year 9 months ago

Chainsaw Man Power Pochita Figure

Furyu is releasing a figure of Power from Chainsaw Man, as well as a 1/1 scale figure of Pochita. Both are available yo pre-order on the F:NEX website and are expected to ship sometime in July 2023. The Power figure will cost ¥34,980 (about $256), and the Pochita figure will cost ¥25,300 (about $185). Pre-orders will close on October 31, 2022. [Thanks, Hobby Watch!]

Notably, the Power figure is 1/7th scale and comes with its own stand based on her appearance. The figure recreates Power in her fiend form, wearing her typical Public Safety Devil Hunter's uniform. It pays significant attention to detail, down to the creases and folds of her slacks and how her coat hangs loosely from her torso. Surrounding Power is an array of blood weapons.

On the other hand, the Pochita figure is a standalone figure made of soft vinyl. The figure's legs are posable, allowing the user to stand him up or have him sit down. As a 1:1 scale figure, Pochita is approximately 34 cm tall (about 1 foot tall) and is made with material that gives his tail and handles a distinctive glossiness.

It was reported yesterday that the trademark for the Intellivision Amico had been abandoned, spurring speculation that development on the console has ceased. Now, the company's CEO says work on the system is ongoing and that the trademark is very much alive.

In an email sent to IGN from Intellivision CEO Phil Adam, the company says that it is "still working on the console" and that the United States Patent and Trademark Office "is usually pretty slow in updating."

Adam provided IGN a screenshot of the Intellivision Amico trademark listed as "live" as of this morning, which IGN confirmed. The filing date for the trademark is listed as June 30, 2022.

The Intellivision Amico is a successor to the Intellivision home console from the 1980s. The new system will utilize a remote control style interface with a touchscreen and charging dock. The plan is for the system to feature a library of new, family-friendly games, some of which are developed by teams who created games for the original Intellivision.

Why Are the Steering Wheels on the Right in the Umbrella Academy in Season 3? Answered

1 year 9 months ago

Are you wondering why the steering wheels are on the right in the Umbrella Academy in Season 3? Well, trust me, you aren’t alone on this one, as just about everyone is wondering whether this is an error or an easter egg. Here is everything you need to know about what is going on with this whole thing.

Despite being in America, the steering wheels for all of the cars seen being used by the Umbrellas have the steering wheel on the right-hand side in Season 3. Some have speculated that this is because the group have gone to a different timeline, but that doesn’t seem right considering no one brings up the oddity throughout the season.

As such, the Umbrellas must be used to the steering wheel being on the right, as the family car seems to always have it there.

Steering Wheels on the Right in the Umbrella Academy in Season 3

According to one eagle-eyed Redditor, the Hotel Obsidian cars in the show are all second-generation Toyota Centuries. These cars are mostly sold in Japan, which makes cars with steering wheels on the right-hand side. They can only be bought with right-hand steering wheels.

Interestingly enough, Reggie’s Rolls Royce in episode seven of season 3 has the steering wheel on the left, despite being a British car. The idea behind this one is that it is possible the car is actually made and bought in America.

Review: Little Noah has a Winning Formula

1 year 9 months ago

Little Noah is a pleasant surprise for Switch owners, as it is an approachable roguelike that can still be quite challenging.

Some games are so neat, succinct, and tidy. Everything is laid out in front of the player. You know what they’re getting into when you start playing. It’s a treat. Little Noah: Scion of Paradise, Granblue Fantasy creator Cygames’ roguelike, is a delightful adventure that can be enjoyed in large or small doses, gradually filling someone up. It’s a fantastic surprise.

Little Noah might look familiar, at least in terms of its appearance. That’s because The original version of the game, which people might know as Battle Champs, was a Clash of Clans sort of game with Akihiko Yoshida and Hitoshi Sakimoto involved. LIttle Noah: Scion of Paradise features the same alchemist protagonist Noah, as well as her airship and Lilliput champions. However, in this adventure she happens upon ruins, an amnesiac cat, and a power-hungry villain named Greigh while searching for her lost father. In the process, it hints she’ll be pulled into a world-changing adventure.
