District 9 Director Neill Blomkamp's New Game Is a Cyberpunk Battle Royale

1 year 11 months ago

The first game from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is Off The Grid, a cyberpunk-style third-person Battle Royale, coming next year.

Gunzilla Games promises a next-generation Battle Royale with a strong focus on narrative progression, with Richard K. Morgan (lead writer of Crysis 2 and author of Altered Carbon) writing the script, and Blomkamp serving as chief visionary officer.

Off The Grid pits 150 players against each other, but PvE (player versus environment) story missions will also take place on the map in real time, with player actions affecting how the story (and therefore other people's gameplay), unfolds.

Crafting and customisation will also be a key component, with players encouraged to trade items with one another.

"With Off The Grid our ambition is not only to create the Battle Royale 2.0 by adding deep player progression, but to build an evolving world designed to take on a life of its own, changing in unexpected ways each time a player rejoins the game," said Blomkamp.

"With an innovative approach to the Battle Royale core session flow and a deep narrative experience, we add purpose to each element of the game, allowing players to revisit the OTG world repeatedly where there is always something new to find and explore, and for us to expand upon."

More information about Off The Grid's blend of Battle Royale and narrative will be shared in the coming months, Gunzilla Games said.

Dread Hunger Became So Unexpectedly Massive on Steam That It Had to Refocus Development

1 year 11 months ago

There's a chance you haven't heard of Dread Hunger yet, even though it's one of the biggest games in the world right now.

A cocktail of Among Us-like social deduction amid the ticking-clock fear of a survival game, the game has quietly amassed a huge playerbase, to the point where it's been in and around Steam's top 10 most played games for well over a month. That success has been so huge, and so sudden, that developer Dread Hunger Team has had reprioritise development to meet the demand.

While it was available for months in Early Access, where Dread Hunger averaged a few hundred players at one time, the game shot to success around its official release in January, climbing to more than 100,000 players, one million copies sold, and rubbing shoulders with Grand Theft Auto V and Elden Ring on Steam's top ten list for concurrent players.

"The surge in popularity was totally unexpected but extremely exciting", said Romy Gellen, marketing and communications coordinator. "We were stoked that we were starting to see hype building and people catching onto our game as we approached full release."

Dread Hunger is about survival, asking eight players to sail their ship through the 19th Century Arctic, stopping and exploring on foot for fuel, food, and other resources. While this is difficult enough by itself, two of the players become corrupted by evil forces and begin to secretly sabotage the group.

Trek to Yomi Review

1 year 11 months ago

If you’re a fan of classic samurai movies, there’s a lot to love about Trek to Yomi. It’s a katana-swiping side-scroller with a worthwhile story that does a magnificent job of distilling old school Japanese cinema into video game form. But while it never stopped blowing me away aesthetically, the things you’re actually doing in that beautiful world are less impressive, with overly simplistic combat and exploration that only begins to scratch its surface. Even so, Trek to Yomi’s stylish presentation makes up for many of its gameplay shortcomings, making this a memorable samurai tale I’m glad I played.

Trek to Yomi’s dedication to black and white samurai movies from the 20th century is apparent in literally every moment of it, from the look of its boot-up logos and main menu all the way to the closing credits. That includes everything from the artificial sparkle dotting the screen that makes it look like it’s playing from an old film reel, to the pacing and line delivery during cutscenes, to the references to historically accurate traditions and religious practices that play a central role in the story. It’s actually hard to overstate just how great it feels to move about in such a meticulously detailed adaptation of a film style I’ve always adored, and that movie magic is the best thing Trek to Yomi has to offer without a doubt.

Nate returns, and with him the suspicious smell of eggs and salt water. But also highjinks! We discuss toilet meals, revenge, and content theft of "It's me, Blorko!" and other instances of stolen Twitter valour. If valour exists on Twitter. This is, of course, all prelude to us talking about some of our favourite dungeons in video games - there are a lot! Shout out to Zelda, which Nate hasn't played, but also Hades, Elden Ring and - of course - Dungeon Keeper. And many more!

New Horizon Forbidden West Patch Tackles Progression Blocks, Visual Shimmering, And More

New Horizon Forbidden West Patch Tackles Progression Blocks, Visual Shimmering, And More

Guerilla Games has released a new update for Horizon Forbidden West, Patch 1.13, that tackles multiple main and side quest progression blocks, as well as persistent issues related to a strange visual shimmering effect in-game, and more.

Live today, Patch 1.13 brings with it a ton of fixes not just to quests, but to general things like the game’s UI and some of Aloy’s animations, as well as improvements to the game’s performance and stability. Perhaps the biggest issue is the aforementioned visual shimmering, which has been a player complaint since launch.

For the uninitiated, the shimmering is an almost glitter-like effect that appears on the edging of objects, robots, and more in Horizon Forbidden West. It makes things in-game look shinier than intended and in most patches since the game’s release, Guerrilla Games has addressed it. Considering it’s still listed under Patch 1.13’s “known issues,” it sounds like the problem persists today.

“We are currently looking into several issues reported by the community,” the patch notes read. “Please note that these issues are not yet fixed in this patch, but our teams are aware of them and they’re being investigated.”

Here are those known issues

District 9 Director Neill Blomkamp Is Working On Off The Grid, A Cyberpunk Battle Royale

1 year 11 months ago

District 9 Director Neill Blomkamp Is Working On Off The Grid, A Cyberpunk Battle Royale

Neill Blomkamp is helping Gunzilla Games write the narrative for its next game, Off The Grid.

Blomkamp, perhaps best known for directing movies such as District 9, Chappie, and Elysium, is helping Gunzilla shape the story of Off The Grid, which the studio is calling a cyberpunk battle royale 2.0 multiplayer shooter. Calling it “2.0” makes it sound like the studio is aiming to revolutionize the genre, but of course, that remains to be seen. However, you can get a glimpse of Off The Grid now thanks to a new teaser trailer released today.

“Dive into the heat of a covert corporate war in Off The Grid, a cyberpunk Battle Royale 2.0 multiplayer shooter where you shape the story and the gameplay,” the teaser trailer’s description reads. “Unfolding on a dystopian tropical island, OTG sends you on a head-spinning assassination and sabotage missions to the greater glory and market share of your chosen faction. Tool up for 2023: it’s about to get bloody.”

As you can see, Gunzilla is aiming to release the game in 2023.

Off The Grid seems like a great match for Blomkamp, especially considering many of his movies have focused on the relationship between mega-corporations and consumers.

Star Wars Battlefront 3 PSP test build surfaces, but it's not what it seems

All sorts of strange things come out of Reddit.

A post on the r/gaming subreddit appeared to show a test-build copy of Star Wars: Battlefront 3 for PSP, which belongs to poster's fiancé.

"LucasArts was a client of a relative of my Fiancé back in the day, and he got to play test a lot of games, one of which was Star Wars: Battlefront 3, once it was cancelled, and all the assets were being gathered up to send back to Skywalker Ranch, one of the play test cartages for the PSP version got left behind. Him being young, he didn't think much of it and took it home, tested it out, AI battles, CTF, and Conquest all worked fine," the user wrote.

Curse of Monkey Island designer reveals reasons for series' art style switch

1 year 11 months ago

As many know already, the Monkey Island series took on a new look as well as a new creative team in its third outing, The Curse of Monkey Island. However, this new art style was not simply because of the change in management behind the game's development. Rather, it was because of the tools being used behind the scenes.

"A new art path had to be developed for Curse of Monkey Island," game designer Jonathan Ackley revealed on Twitter.

"2D games of the time scanned drawings straight to raster, causing heavy aliasing. We used US Animation. It vectorised the line art before compositing and colour/resolution reduction, creating smoother art," he explained.

Our top gaming monitor pick is down to $299 at Best Buy ($150 off)

1 year 11 months ago

Our top gaming monitor recommendation is on sale at Best Buy in the US today, where the Dell S2721DGF is retailing for $299 after a $150 discount. That's a great price for a 1440p 165Hz monitor of any description, but especially one that uses LG's advanced Fast IPS panels and is FreeSync/G-Sync Compatible.

We've been recommending Fast IPS panels for a little while, because they combine the motion handling of TN screens with the colours and viewing angles of IPS. It really is the best of both worlds, as you get a monitor that is as great for watching videos or browsing the web as it is for gaming in a wide range of genres.

1440p gaming is the current sweet spot on PC, requiring much less graphical horsepower than 4K gaming while also unlocking access to high frame-rate gaming. With a mid-range PC, you can play AAA games at full resolution to benefit from the increased detail of 1440p over 1080p, while esports titles will run in the hundreds of fps to really take advantage of this monitor's low input lag, fast pixel response times and high refresh rate. Of course, with a high-end PC, you'll be able to max out the monitor and get a better-looking and better-feeling experience than your standard 1080p 60Hz screen.

HGXIV: Meet the Interior Decorators Leading Final Fantasy XIV’s Vibrant Housing Community

1 year 11 months ago

Buying a house in Final Fantasy XIV sometimes feels as insurmountable a task as buying a house in real life.

Housing has been a hot commodity in FFXIV for years, as owning a house gives players a space to decorate and make their own. But with demand far outpacing supply, housing is one of the luxury items in Final Fantasy XIV.

But if you're lucky to get a house, you'll be glad to check out HGXIV, a fan podcast, and community that shines a spotlight on designers and provides essential resources like design guides, housing directories, designer portfolios, and more.

There are two big hurdles to purchasing a house in FFXIV. The first is the high cost, as the most basic plot of land starts at 3 million gil (the in-game currency), and larger plots can cost up to 50 million gil. What makes buying a house even more difficult is that it has practically become a game of chance, as players need to comb through residential wards and wait for plots to go on sale, then hope they can snatch it before someone else. A certain level of commitment to FFXIV is needed to even consider owning a house.

Square Enix has constantly tried to introduce new ways to get houses to more players, but even its most recent attempt with a lottery system was met with a crippling glitch that messed up the way winners were drawn.

Despite all the roadblocks, however, a vibrant community has popped up around the housing market, filled with dozens of virtual interior designers.

Xbox Cloud Gaming Brings Fortnite to PC and iOS Devices for Free

1 year 11 months ago

Epic Games and Microsoft are partnering to bring Fortnite to Xbox Cloud Gaming. The megahit battle royale is now available to play on PC and even iOS and iPad devices through streaming.

Anyone interested in playing Epic's battle royale just needs a Microsoft account and an iOS device or Windows PC with internet to begin playing immediately through a browser. There's no need to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass as Fortnite will remain free-to-play through Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Xbox Cloud Gaming lets users play games instantly without needing to install a game onto their device locally. The service is normally part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, but Fortnite does not require a membership to play. Instead, players can log in with their Microsoft account through xbox.com/play on a web browser to begin playing Fortnite.

The browser-based version of Fortnite means players can circumvent Apple's decision to delist Fortnite from the iOS App Store. Nvidia did something similar for a limited time when it brought Fortnite to its streaming platform GeForce Now.

This new free-to-play offering is meant to bolster Xbox Cloud Gaming which Microsoft announced has been used by over 10 million players.

Against all odds, I'm playing Fortnite... and enjoying it

1 year 11 months ago

My friends and I have come full circle. We've gone from aggressively dunking on Fortnite to actively enjoying Fortnite. Why? Desperation. And its No Build mode. We sought a lighthearted battle royale having tried loads of others, and were suckered in by the prospect of a Fortnite that didn’t feature people erecting defensive fortresses in milliseconds.

Incredibly, the game has delivered. I'm having fun - albeit with a tinge of unease. Not only does the game act like a blaring reminder that I've lost touch with the Top 40, it's also a bizarre metaverse where nothing is sacred.

Fortnite Now Available On iOS And Other Devices With Xbox Cloud Gaming Partnership

1 year 11 months ago

Epic Games is partnering with Microsoft to bring Fortnite back to Apple devices by making the battle royale available for free on the Xbox Cloud Gaming service. This way of playing Fortnite makes the game available, starting today, through a supported web browser on iOS and Android phones and tablets as well as PCs.

Moving to the cloud circumvents Apple's App Store, which Fortnite is currently not on due to actions leading to a lawsuit that began in 2020 and continued well into 2021. Epic Games had forgone iOS App Store policy by allowing Fortnite users to pay Epic directly for digital purchases such as microtransactions, side-stepping Apple's mandatory 30% cut on these transactions on its platform. The two companies fought in court over the legality of Apple's business practices, which led to an injunction calling for Apple to put an indefinite pause on preventing app developers from including links to external sites for alternative ways to pay than solely through the App Store. Fortnite was removed from the App Store in August 2020 and hasn't returned since, leaving iOS players with no option to play the game on the platform until now.

Fortnite Playable on Xbox Cloud Gaming for Free as Over 10 Million Players Have Used the Service

1 year 11 months ago

Microsoft has added another major element to its Xbox Cloud Gaming service, and it’s the ability to play Fortnite for free.

Starting today you’ll be able to play Epic Games’ super-successful battle royale game on all the platforms supported by Xbox Cloud Gaming (iOS, Android, or Windows PC) without even needing to pay for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

All you need is a Microsoft Account, and you can find the game to play here.

This isn’t the only free-to-play game that will appear on Xbox Cloud Gaming, as Microsoft promised “to bring more Free-to-Play games people love in the future.”

It’ll certainly be interesting to see which ones will be added and when, but Fornite could certainly be a big driver for the adoption of the service.

Microsoft also provided some information on the growth of the service as a whole, mentioning that 10 million players have enjoyed it as part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Those players have played on over 6,000 types of devices, and discover and play on average twice as many games as Xbox Game Pass members who don’t use the cloud.

We also get the confirmation that Microsoft Flight Simulator was the most played cloud game on phones, tablets, PCs, and consoles for the month of March.

Below you can check a trailer celebrating the arrival of Fortnite on Xbox Cloud Gaming.
