What's better: drawbacks, or a load of lasers?

1 year 11 months ago

Last week, you decided that romance is better than de_dust2. I'm a little surprised, considering Dust 2 not only took an early lead but has likely been modded into every game which features romance too. But I accept the decision, and our mission continues. This week, I ask you to pick between a trade-off and something with no negative consequences at all: drawbacks, or a load of lasers.

The top 10 games on PC in May 2022

1 year 11 months ago

May is a relatively quiet month when it comes to new PC games. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, of course. The first half of 2022 has been unusually stuffed with great things to play, and I’m sure a lot of us will be thankful for the opportunity to spend some time with the few bits and pieces that were overshadowed by your Elden Rings and your Dying Light 2s earlier in the year.

For those looking for something new, however, May still has a lot of interesting stuff to offer those hungry for an indie game or two. Think of me this month as a waiter in a fancy restaurant, offering you a carefully curated selection of bite-sized delights as part of our tasting menu. What we have on offer is both nutritious and delicious, a journey through genres that is sure to excite the palette.

FixFox review: a lovely weird world to live and repair things in

1 year 11 months ago

My FixFox journey, not unlike that of the titular little furry protagonist Vix, has been abnormally long and strange. I started playing it, then moved and didn't have a PC for a long time, and it was only recently I finally got my PC back and finished the game last week. It took me around 12 hours of playing the game to travel around a strange cuboid planet using postage stamps to fix hairdryers for robots, but stretched over three months in real life. And reviewing a game this many weeks after release isn't normal procedure either, but I really like FixFox and I want people who might like it to stand a better chance of finding it. I also think a break of several weeks isn't the worst way to experience it, either.

Sims 4 seemingly teases the return of werewolves in latest content roadmap

1 year 11 months ago

Following a bit of a bumpy start to 2022 for The Sims 4 - thanks to the frustratingly buggy launch of My Wedding Stories - EA has teased a look ahead at the next few months of expansion releases, including what appears to be the long-awaited return of playable werewolves.

According to a newly shared content roadmap, The Sims 4 will receive three new expansions of varying sizes over the next two months. EA is gathering all three together under the banner Seize the Night, and all are connected by a loose nocturnal theme.

At the smaller end of the scale are two new Kit packs, currently being teased under the names Chic Nights Out and Cozy Nights In, which perhaps points to a new selection of nightlife clothing in the first expansion and comfy new furnishings in the latter.

Nintendo Switch Sports Review – Par For The Course

1 year 11 months ago

Reviewed on: Switch
Platform: Switch

Release:

Wii Sports and its Resort follow-up were watershed moments for motion-control entertainment. Sports simulators usually underscore realism. And yet Nintendo’s family-centric approach to the genre imbued a selection of competitive activities with accessible interactions, lighthearted art direction, and catchy jingles. Switch Sports attempts to replicate that magic for a contemporary audience with sleek visuals, minigames that feel distinctive but familiar, and avatar customization coupled with ranked multiplayer. Switch Sports is a slam dunk choice for gatherings, but a lack of mechanical depth and repetitive content make the hand-swinging, leg-kicking thrills lamentably short-lived.

New York City Files Complaint Against Activision Blizzard for Wrongdoing Tied to Microsoft Acquisition

1 year 11 months ago

Update 11:53am PT: Activision Blizzard has issued a statement in response to the New York lawsuit, which it has shared with IGN:

“We disagree with the allegations made in this complaint and look forward to presenting our arguments to the Court.”

Original story: Multiple New York City funds have banded together to file a complaint against Activision Blizzard, alleging that CEO Bobby Kotick and the board may have breached their fiduciary duty in their dealings with Microsoft to be acquired, and harmed the company's value.

As reported by Axios, the suit was filed on May 2 by the New York City Employees', Board of Education, and Teachers' retirement systems, as well as pension funds for the city fire department, and police — all of which hold stock in Activision Blizzard. The plaintiffs are claiming their right to inspect various Activision Blizzard records to determine if any wrongdoing was done through the acquisition process, citing a number of concerns to back their demand.

The 10 Best Tactics RPGs

1 year 11 months ago

Tactics RPGs are the meat and potatoes in the diet of video games. Not always flashy and exciting at first glance to those who may not know the genre, but they're often one of the most satisfying meals to sink your teeth into. From controlling Viking armies to repelling alien invasions and even fighting in a faux World War II, there is a wide world of experiences to be had in this genre, and we’ve selected the 10 best. Here is our list of the Top 10 Tactics RPGs of all time.

10. Othercide

Stunningly stylish, moody, and challenging with a dark and complex story that only comes into focus little by little, Othercide's noir Lovecraftian world and battles are inimitable. Roguelike elements and a bittersweet sacrifice mechanic lead to developing strong bonds with your "daughters", even knowing that many of them may not make it. And in some cases, you may need to decide who lives and who dies.

Enemy behavior is deterministic, but the diversity of foes and the situations you face them in makes each map a satisfying tangle to unfurl. The terrifying bosses show this off best of all. Othercide is the type of tactical RPG that cleanly weaves strong mechanical and aesthetic ideas into something hauntingly beautiful. It's an outstanding beacon for what this genre has become in the last several years.

Apex Legends Saviors Ranked Reloaded Adds Demotions & New Tier

1 year 11 months ago

Apex Legends Season 13: Saviors is right around the corner and, as usual, Respawn has released info on specific changes that players can expect to see when the new season goes live on May 10. More specifically, we’ve finally been given details on the Ranked Reloaded tagline that’s been used in some of the SAviors promo, including the gameplay trailer.

The game’s Twitter account just sent out a tweet that outlined everything and provided a link and a brief outline of the changes. The biggest changes have to do with the addition of the new Rookie tier underneath Bronze along with demotions and the removal of Kill RP caps.

According to the Apex team, these ranked changes have been made to promote team play and make sure that RP more accurately reflects a player’s skill. With that in mind, all teammates will receive RP (50% of the normal amount) when one squadmate gets a kill.

New York City-Based Retirement Holdings Sue Activision Over Microsoft Acquisition

1 year 11 months ago

Pension funds representing New York City public employees filed a Section 220 Complaint against Activision

Today another chapter has been added to the apparently infinite saga sparked by the pending acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft.

As reported by Axios, a number of New York City-based retirement funds for public servants ( New York City Employees’ Retirement System, the New York City Fire Department Pension Fund, the New York City Police Pension Fund, the New York City Board of Education Retirement System, and the Teachers’ Retirement System for the City of New York) have filed a section 220 complaint against the well-known video game publisher in order to be entitled to inspect company documents relevant to the acquisition deal.

The complaint, filed in Delaware on April 26, alleges that the deal would allow the company’s CEO Bobby Kotick and the board of directors to escape liability for their alleged breaches of fiduciary duties, also linked to the previous allegations of misconduct.

It also alleges that Microsoft’s offer undervalues the company’s value, thus causing damage to its shareholders, including the funds acting as plaintiffs.

According to the complaint, Kotick should have been found unfit to negotiate the deal with Microsoft by the Board, but this did not happen.

Activision On Call of Duty Vanguard's Underperforming Sales: It Was World War II

1 year 11 months ago

Call of Duty: Vanguard and Activision Blizzard just can’t catch a break. Despite being the best-selling game in 2021, Activision is still unhappy with how the game has performed. Who have they identified as the culprit? World War II.

The company recognizes that the franchise is still one of the most successful entertainment franchises, at least, but their 2021 premium didn’t meet their expectations. In their annual report to investors, Activision Blizzard wrote, “The game’s World War II setting didn’t resonate with some of our community.”

Back in November, we reported that GameIndustry.biz, in collaboration with PAX and EGX, concluded people weren’t playing Vanguard because they were too busy playing other games. In fact, World War II even got a mention with 24% of those polled saying they also weren’t interested in games set during that time.

The company also says there was a lack of "innovation" in the 2021 mainline Call of Duty game, though what exactly that means is unclear.

Flick of Faith Board Game Review

1 year 11 months ago

Dexterity games have a place in the wider canon of tabletop games because, well hey, they’re played on a tabletop. But in other respects, they’re odd fish. While most board games want to flex a combination of chance and strategic skill (see our list of the best strategy board games), most dexterity games are entirely about physical skill, literally a totally different ball game.

Combining that physical skill with a modicum of strategy is thus a bit of a golden goose when it comes to dexterity games but success stories are few and far between. The most successful is actually a classic older game called Crockinole but that demands an expensive wooden board. Flick of Faith, by contrast, is trying to do the same thing for $35 (see it on Amazon).

What’s in the Box?

Before you get into the box, it’s worth taking note of its size and shape. Unlike almost every other game on the market, Flick of Faith comes in a long, narrow box that isn’t going to fit on a standard shelving unit or stack with other games.

Levering the lid off makes it plain why: inside there’s a big, rolled-up vinyl mat to use as a play surface, depicting four islands surrounded by clouds. You might presume this kind of mat isn’t smooth and shiny enough to slide the included wooden disks across, but it facilitates the flicking just fine.

Half-Life 2: Ravenholm: An Hour of the Canceled Valve Game Revealed

1 year 11 months ago

Arkane Studios might have canceled Ravenholm, the working title for its Half-Life 2 spinoff, over ten years ago, but that won’t stop video game historians from digging up footage of the game. Today, the video game documentary channel Noclip shared a video with nearly an hour of unfiltered footage from the abandoned zombie shooter project.

The footage is contextualized by Danny O’Dwyer, who explains the development process as well as the game’s environment and characters in between sections of narration-free gameplay. As O’Dwyer begins playing, Lieutenant Shepard (the player character) gains consciousness in an abandoned hospital and is guided by Father Grigori, who’s known for his role in Half-Life 2. It doesn’t take long for the action to kick in, as the hospital is soon invaded by zombies.

O’Dwyer notes that the game, while still playable, is visibly unfinished. It’s apparent that the game has some rough edges — as many commenters noted, some of the zombies are comically wearing shirts that say “I’m a placeholder.”

The game was canceled for unknown reasons after development taking place between 2006 and 2007. Previously, footage of the game was revealed for the first time by Noclip back in 2020 in a documentary on Arkane.

Microsoft Flight Simulator Cessna 310, A32NX Airbus A320 8.0 Stable, Barranquilla, & McCall Airports Released; Great Britain North Announced

1 year 11 months ago

Today third-party developers released several add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator and revealed another.

Milviz finally released its Cessna 310 R, which is now available on the developer’s own store for $39.99.

It’s worth mentioning that the developer announced that the aircraft will absolutely be released on Xbox down the line, but that requires Microsoft to fix the handling of WASM gauges on the platform, which has not been done yet. Milviz has no visibility on when that will happen.

You can take a look at the aircraft in the trailer below.

Another relevant release comes from FlyByWire, which released the 8.0 Stable version of its freeware A32NX Airbus A320 Neo add-on.

This is definitely a rather important milestone for the developer, as it brings to the stable version a lot of important features like the custom LNAV, TCAS, the MCDU web interface, and much more.

You can find the full patch notes here.

New lawsuit alleges Activision CEO rushed through Microsoft acquisition to escape liability for wrongdoing

1 year 11 months ago

A new lawsuit filed by New York City Employees' Retirement System has alleged Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick fast-tracked a takeover bid from Microsoft in order to escape liability for wrongdoing following a damning Wall Street Journal report claiming he'd known about sexual misconduct at the Call of Duty publisher "for years".

Activision Blizzard has faced a relentless stream of shocking allegations relating to its workplace culture since last July, when a State of California lawsuit filing called the publisher "a breeding ground for harassment and discrimination against women". Building on that lawsuit, the Wall Street Journal published a report in November claiming Bobby Kotick had been aware of the allegations of sexual misconduct and mistreatment of female employees across many parts of the company "for years", but had failed to act on them or tell the board of directors and executives everything he knew.
