Prey and Jotun: Valhalla Edition are next week's free Epic Store games

Fans of quality freebies (so basically everyone then, I assume) are in for a treat next week as Prey and Jotunn join the lengthening list of games to be given away on the Epic Store.

Prey, of course, is yet another winner from Arkane Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed likes of Dishonored and Deathloop. As with those series, Prey, which released back in 2017, falls squarely in the immersive sim genre, this time taking the studios' focus on open-ended traversal and player choice into outer space.

Here, players take on the role of Morgan Yu and, after a memorably orchestrated opening sequence, find themselves onboard the space station Talos I somewhere in the year 2032. It's a gorgeously luxuriant setting - Eurogamer called it "perhaps the grandest and most beautiful facility of its kind ever imagined for a game" in its Recommended review - but all is not right.

FTC Probing Sony's Bungie Acquisition As Gaming Merger Oversight Gets More Aggressive

The Federal Trade Commission is reportedly opening an inquiry into Sony's planned acquisition of Bungie, marking a notable ramp-up in federal oversight of gaming mergers during a period of major industry consolidation.

According to sources speaking with The Information, last week the FTC began seeking more information about the deal in an investigation that could potentially delay its closing by six months or even more. Though a closing date wasn't announced alongside the initial announcement, The Information reports it could be pushed into early 2023.

The FTC is reportedly focused on concerns that Sony might be motivated to prevent competing companies and services, such as Xbox, from accessing Bungie's games such as Destiny 2. That means examining how popular Destiny is, and whether a possible restriction would meaningfully harm Sony's competitors and create antitrust violations. While Sony has publicly committed to keeping Bungie games cross-platform, its ability to restrict both current titles and future releases in the future is a point of antitrust concern.

This investigation represents another sign of the FTC's recent, more aggressive approach toward potential antitrust issues in the gaming industry. While it is customary for the FTC to look into large deals, the spree of major gaming acquisition in recent years as well as the growing size of such deals appears to have prompted greater scrutiny, particularly under Biden-appointed FTC chair Lina Khan.

Get the best MMO mouse* for £55 after a 45% discount

The Razer Naga Trinity is a rather brilliant mouse for MMO gamers, or anyone really that likes or needs to have plenty of buttons right under their thumb. The Naga Trinity's key feature is that it comes with three interchangeable side panels, each with a different amount of layout of buttons - so you can have a regular two-button side layout for FPS titles, a seven-button layout for more complex games (MOBAs?) and a 12-button calculator-style layout when things get properly exciting (MMOs). Or you can just figure out which one is your favourite, and keep it on forever more.

The Naga Trinity's UK RRP is £110, but it normally goes for about £70 or £80. Today, it's down to £55 - a nice discount!

Build a tiny PC in this Cooler Master NR200P Mini ITX case for £76

The Cooler Master NR200P is, in my humble opinion, the best value Mini ITX case you can buy right now. For its street price of £110, you get a compact yet easy to build in design with a choice of mesh or glass side panels, plus a pair of low profile 120mm fans. Today however, you can pick up this brilliant little case for £76 in black or white, or £85 to £96 for colours like orange, purple, teal and pink. Either way you slice it, this is an incredible case for the money - and I should know, I've got two of them in my room right now.

Stone Cold Steve Austin Reveals His Favorite Zelda Game

It's always fun when our interests collide in fun and strange ways. One of my favorite things to watch almost any night of the week is pro wrestling. I've been a big fan of Stone Cold Steve Austin since he broke out as a mega-star in the 90's, and since I  know him as a real outdoorsy kind of guy, I never thought he'd be keeping up with what's popular in the world of gaming. In a promo for an upcoming episode of The Broken Skull Sessions, where Steve Austin interviews wrestlers and those around the industry, he shocked me and his most recent guest, WWE's newest big acquisition, "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes.

Microsoft Flight Simulator Getting a Patch Soon; Canberra Airport Announced; Tokushima & Eppley Get Screenshots & Video

Today Microsoft and third-party developers had news to share about Microsoft Flight Simulator and its upcoming add-ons.

First of all, Microsoft announced that a new patch is in the works to address some issues that cropped up with Sim Update 9. More details and patch notes will be shared “soon.”

In the weekly development update, we also hear that SimWorks Studios’ Van’s Aircraft RV-14 (portrayed above), Captainsim’s C-130 Hercules (not recommended since it’s just the external model, unless that’s what you want), and IndiaFoxtEcho’s Sukhoi Su-31 have been released on the official marketplace, but only for PC for the moment.

We also get a new reveal from Impulse Simulations, which has encountered issues with the development of Darwin International Airport (YPDN) but isn’t staying idle and is working on another relevant scenery in Australia, Canberra Airport (YSPD), serving the country’s often mistaken capital city.

Below you can see some of the models created so far.

Warframe's annual TennoCon fan event returns this July in digital-only form

TennoCon, Warframe's annual fan event, is officially returning this summer in digital-only form, with developer Digital Extremes having now confirmed that all-day proceedings will be getting underway on 16th July.

TennoCon has, of course, traditionally been a live, in-person event combining Warframe announcements, developer panels, and various community focused activities, but Digital Extremes made the decision to go online-only back in 2020 in reponse to the coronavirus pandemic, meaning this year's TennoCon will be its third fully digital show.

Unfortunately, beyond that 16th July date, Digital Extremes is yet to share much in the ways of details about this year's TennoCon, only saying that the all-day event will feature "exciting reveals" from the team, alongside a community art show.

Animal-splicing tycoon game Let's Build a Zoo is getting dinosaur DLC

If you're starting to tire of splicing up the same old animals into DNA hybrid monstrosities in park management sim Let's Build a Zoo, there's some potentially exciting news on the horizon: you'll soon be able to fancy up your adorably terrifying creations into something even more exotic when the game's newly announced Dinosaur Island DLC arrives on 23rd May.

Let's Build a Zoo, if you're unfamiliar, takes the familiar framework of classic zoo tycoons as its starting point, tasking players with importing and breeding animals, managing staff, and fashioning an appealing park using scenery items, shops, and amenities in order to keep guests happy and the money rolling in.

It offers two main twists on that familiar formula, however; there's a morality system - giving players the choice between keeping everything above board or taking a more exploitative path - plus the aforementioned DNA splicing angle, enabling players to create and exhibit the likes of crocoducks, giraffephants, and chickow.

What A Metroid 64 Could Have Looked Like

The Metroid series took a little nap during the N64 era, with Nintendo unable or unwilling to release a single home console game for the franchise between the success of the SNES’s Super Metroid in 1994 and the GameCube’s Metroid Prime in 2002. So a fan is stepping in—and back in time—to make one for themselves.

Starting on May 10, players will welcome the Rise of the Naga, which brings a new hero into the mix, a reset of all player ratings, and a new minion type in the form of the magic-wielding naga.

Naga are spell-thirsty minions that are drawn to magic, and can give players spells or get more powerful when spells are played around them. Certain Naga also possesses the Spellcraft keyword, which grants a temporary spell each turn, which can be used to buff them until the start of the next Recruit phase.

As for the new hero, Queen Azshara will arrive in Hearthstone Battlegrounds, ready to lead her people to victory. Her passive, Azshara’s Ambition, allows her to begin her Naga Conquest when the player’s warband reaches 30 total attack, this, in turn, allows her to spend one mana to discover a Naga each turn.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Sets Record as Top-Grossing Video Game Movie Adaptation of All Time

The blue blur that is Sonic the Hedgehog is definitely making waves in the entertainment scene, with both a recent movie sequel, a new remastered collection, and even a Netflix series in the works. The big screen is where Sonic has definitely made the biggest impression, as the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie is now officially the most successful video game movie adaptation of all time, raking in $331.64 million at the global box office.

Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, the amount surpasses the first film’s $319.71 million box office take, smashing the record. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 debuted at No. 1 in 47 markets, including the U.K., France, Australia, and other countries, and also saw strong sales in Mexico and Brazil.

Of the $331.64 million box office take, the U.S. portion stands at $162.74 million, with the international box office sales at  $168.9 million. Needless to say, this is excellent news for Sega as well as their partners at Paramount Pictures.

It remains to be seen if that box office success can be replicated for the other projects under the Sonic the Hedgehog umbrella, which includes the aforementioned animated show, future movies, music, and merchandise. Fans can look forward to the third movie in the trilogy most likely in 2024, with confirmation coming even before the second movie was released.

Barton Lynch Pro Surfing 2022 Seeks to Resurrect a Long-Lost Sports Sub-Genre

Back in the early 2000s, surfing was one of several sports being well-served in the video game space. Treyarch’s Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer, published on Xbox, PS2, and GameCube under Activision’s long-defunct Activision O2 brand, is one high-profile example – but there were plenty of others. Krome produced Championship Surfer for PC, PlayStation, and Dreamcast in 2000, and also Sunny Garcia Surfing for PS2 in 2001. Angel Studios (which later became Rockstar San Diego) released Transworld Surf on Xbox, PS2, and GameCube between 2001 and 2003. The surf-obsessed may even remember Surfing H3O, although you might be better off forgetting that one.

And then, the tsunami of surfing games stopped. Waxheads were waiting for more, but the surfing sub-genre was sunk.

“Perhaps I need my head read,” jokes Bungarra Software CEO Andrew West when asked why he thinks it’s been effectively two decades since a sport-focused surfing game surfaced. Based in Fremantle, Western Australia, Bungarra is the developer of Barton Lynch Pro Surfing 2022 – an ambitious new surfing game bearing the name of 1988 ASP World Tour Champion and Australian Sporting Hall of Famer Barton Lynch, available now on Steam Early Access.

Cobra Kai Season 5 Returns to Netflix in September

If there’s one thing to be said about Cobra Kai, it’s that the filming and production schedule is always on point. We just finished up season 4 at the start of the year, and season 5 has already been announced for a Sept. 9 release date on Netflix.

The new season will pick up from where season 4 left off, as Silver has managed to put Kreese behind bars and proceeded to take over Cobra Kai, setting up dojos all over the Valley. You can check out the new trailer down below:

We get a glimpse of what our main characters will be up to, with LaRusso reuniting with Chozen as they plan to take down Silver, while Johnny goes on a roadtrip with Robby to Mexico to look for Miguel. And as always, there’s plenty of fun karate action to look forward to, from the looks of this trailer.

It’s unclear whether this will be the show’s final season, though personally, I lowkey hope this series never ends and we eventually get season 80 or something where Miguel becomes the new sensei of Cobra Kai. Season 5 is set to premiere on Netflix on Sept. 9.

Hitman 3 Switches up Post-launch Roadmap With New Map In July

For those that have been enjoying Hitman 3 since it launched in 2021, there has been plenty of post-launch DLC to keep players busy. That will continue this year, with even more content coming our way as laid out by IO Interactive’s roadmap. One of those happens to be the new Freelancer mode for Hitman 3, but the wait will now be longer as the mode is being delayed to the second half of the year.

“As we’ve said, we’re taking some extra time to tighten the mode up and improve several elements that we think will greatly improve the gameplay experience. Whilst we work on those improvements, we’re also preparing to dive deeper into the mode and share more of what you can expect,” said IO in a new blog post.

“With all of that in mind, we’re now aiming to release the Freelancer game mode to Hitman 3 in the second half of 2022. We think it will be worth the wait.”

In its place, IO Interactive is launching a new map in the month of July instead. Ambrose Island will have an intriguing narrative, taking place before the events of Hitman 3 and fills in a few gaps from the World of Assassination storyline. You can check out Ambrose Island in the screenshot below:

Path of Exile: Sentinel Expansion Rewards Players for Challenging Themselves

The action RPG that is Path of Exile is no stranger to expansions that can transform how players enjoy the game, such as Harvest, Echoes of the Atlas, and Siege of the Atlas. Maintaining that same spirit, the upcoming Sentinel expansion will do just the same, allowing players to up the ante in exchange for even more bonus loot.

The titular Sentinels will begin dropping as loot from slain monsters, and come in either red, blue, or yellow varieties. Like most things found in Path of Exile, there will be different modifiers and perks affixed on these Sentinels, and they can be deployed during combat to make things more hectic and rewarding.

Red Stalker Sentinels buffs any enemies within its visibility for a limited time, the blue Pandemonium Sentinels goes further by buffing every opponent on-screen and even beyond immediately, while the yellow Apex Sentinel will provide buffs to the most dangerous of rare, unique, or boss enemies. Each Sentinel can only be used once per area, so players will have to keep that in mind when looking to increase the challenge.
