Stonefly review - a bug's life with all its grind and glory

2 years 11 months ago

High up where the branches get icy, a snowstorm set in. The world was suddenly a thing of whiteness. Plodding on quite lost, I found a stranger in furs who offered to show me the way forward. We walked together, him giving occasional directions that I followed, the wind tugging at us as we went. For a few minutes the storm gave us space: there was nothing to do but find the path through this rolling blankness.

Flight School are good at moments like this. Moments that serve to remind me that this small team makes games that are quietly like no other. Creature in the Well blended end-of-the-world posthumanism with pinball and sparking electricity and, um, a creature in the well. It was stark and memorable. Stonefly is sort of sumo and sort of a collectathon and upgradeathon, but really it's something far more special. It's a mech game on the microcosmic scale. The mechs you pilot and steadily upgrade are insects, all bent legs and hidden wings, and these insects are exploring a world of twigs and bracken and falling leaves. The word horde on offer says it all: canopy, bramble, maple, nightlight.

Lost Judgment for PS5, Xbox Series X & More Gets New Screenshots & Videos Introducing Characters & Actors

2 years 11 months ago

Today Sega released quite a lot of new assets for its upcoming action game Lost Judgment, focusing on the cast of characters and the actors who play them.

We get to see Takayuki Yagami, the protagonist of the game, played by Takuya Kimura. In this game, he is investigating bullying in a high school in Yokohama when his former colleague Saori Shirosaki asks him to also investigate a murder that happened in the city.

The case, which appeared to have been triggered by a father’s revenge for the loss of his son, soon becomes complicated and intertwined with the interests of the police, the prosecutor’s office, and some criminal gangs.

In this chaos, everyone cries out for their own justice, and Yagami is also forced to choose between Law and Justice as he pursues the case.

Jin Kuwana, played by Koji Yamamoto is a handyman who knows everything there is to know about the Isezaki Ijincho district. He’s willing to take on any request for a fee, including those that aren’t strictly legal if the money is good. He sees Yagami as a rival as he’s an outsider sniffing around local murder cases.

Kazuya Soma, played by Hiroshi Tamaki, is the leader of the “hangure” (gangs that usually fill the gaps left by the yakuza) that is aiming to take control of Kamurocho.

The city has been in a power vacuum after the disappearance of the Tojo Clan years ago. and Soma’s RK gang has already made a name for itself in the battle for control of the underworld. Soma himself used to be a member of the Tojo Clan and a candidate for leadership.

Akihiro Ehara, played by Ken Mitsuishi is used to be an active police officer, but he was caught red-handed for molesting a man on a train and he was arrested on a platform of Shinjuku Station while trying to run away.

13 levels we want in the new TimeSplitters

2 years 11 months ago

Sparks of purple electricity appeared in our skies last month, with reports of violent cartoon monkeys raining down. It can mean only one thing: Free Radical, the developer of noughties console shooter TimeSplitters, has appeared from a hole in the year 2005 to announce a new TimeSplitters game. Good news for fans of multiplayer gingerbread men (ie. me). Bad news for anyone embarrassed to remember how many TimeSplitters characters danced around in their undies (hello it's me again). Anyway, here are 13 levels I'd like to see in the new time-travelling gun game, the title of which I have correctly guessed below.

Half-Life: Alyx multiplayer mod turns your friend into a moral support bot

2 years 11 months ago

If you find yourself getting spooked venturing into Valve's VR adventure Half-Life: Alyx alone, then you might be pleased to know you can drag a pal along for the ride now. Modders have made an open-source multiplayer mod that lets you play the game alongside a friend, spawning them in as a floating moral support robot. And it's well cute.

XCOM studio are making a Marvel turn-based game, rumours say

2 years 11 months ago

E3 is almost upon us, which means E3 rumours and supposed leaks are ramping up. Here's a curious one: Firaxis, the studio behind the rebooted XCOM, are making a turn-based game with Marvel superheroes. The evidence supporting rumours of this 'Codename CODA' are pretty flimsy but welp, pre-E3 is the time for gossip and speculation. Honestly, I can see superpowers being a good fit for XCOM-esque action, but didn't XCOM 2 already give soldiers so many more interesting and varied abilities than your average Marvel wizard?

2 years 11 months ago

There can be no doubting the big news of the week: Sony's cross-gen U-turn. It's the hot topic of discussion during this week's Eurogamer News Cast, which you can watch in the video below:

This week Sony confirmed God of War: Ragnarok, which was originally announced for a PlayStation 5 release in 2021, is delayed into next year, and will now also launch on PlayStation 4.

That's not all! Polyphony's hotly-anticipated Gran Turismo 7, which Sony had said was a PS5 exclusive, is also coming to PS4.

What we've been playing

2 years 11 months ago

Hello! Welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little bit about some of the games we've found ourselves playing over the last few days. This week: Overboard!, a large impact remastered, and that bit from Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones where C3PO gets stuck on a conveyor belt.

If you fancy catching up on some of the older editions of What we've been playing, here's our archive.

I've always told people you can't skip Mass Effect 1 - to the point where I think I've ruined playing the Mass Effect trilogy for a few friends. "Just get through this mechanically-dated game where all the characters and plotlines are still in their infancy," I tell them. "You need to save Wrex! You need to kill Ashley!" And while this is all absolutely true, I also know I'm basically forcing them to sit through that terrible first season of Buffy on some tatty old VHS, instead of dipping in to all the better episodes to come.

Amazon Prime Day Nintendo Switch deals: all the best offers

2 years 10 months ago

We've made it to day two and even more Amazon Prime Day Nintendo Switch deals are upon us. We've seen a couple of good Switch bundles over the last 24 hours, but the new additions are some of the best offers yet.

There haven't been any drastic discounts in response to the rumoured Nintendo Switch Pro (or whatever it actually ends up being named). The more powerful version of the console was expected to encourage a price cut on the current model, but nothing has materialised...yet.

However, that doesn't mean a big Prime Day Switch bargain is off the cards. We've seen various console bundles, games and accessories reduced already. It'll be interesting to see if any compare to the Nintendo Switch Black Friday deals we saw last year.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Sequel In “Early Planning Stages,” Artplay Confirms

2 years 11 months ago

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is one of the biggest success stories in Kickstarter history, and while it’s had a very tumultuous launch with a subpar Switch version and other nerfs and updates, there’s no denying that this is still one of the best Metroidvania games we’ve played in years. The game had a very extensive content roadmap as well, and so far, the developers have managed to deliver on most of their promises.

With how successful the game has been, it’s no surprise that Koji Igarashi and Artplay would want to work on a follow-up to this Castlevania love letter.

Over on Twitter, the team confirmed that they do indeed have plans for a sequel to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, though it’s still in very early planning stages at the moment. They also went on to state that their priority is still finishing up and releasing content for Ritual of the Night before working on anything else.

Ark: Survival Evolved's final expansion has arrived

2 years 11 months ago

Hover-surfboards, flying platypus-like creatures, and Vin Diesel falling out of a wet pod - I already didn't fully understand Ark: Survival Evolved, but I can't deny its new expansion has piqued my interest. Out now, Ark: Genesis Part 2 invites players to jump into the game's final chapter, and play through the storyline that'll lead into its sequel. Oh, and David Tennant is in it too.

Injustice 2 Mobile dev apologises for "tone deaf" Pride event

2 years 11 months ago

The developer of Injustice 2 Mobile has apologised for a Pride event that challenged players to beat up a queer woman.

The mobile version of NetherRealm's fighting game was accused of being "tone deaf" after an in-game challenge designed to celebrate Pride Month tasked players with defeating canonically bisexual character Poison Ivy hundreds of thousands of times.

Rewards for completing the community challenge included Harley Quinn tokens - a nod to Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn's romantic relationship in DC Comics.

Best Mass Effect Legendary Edition Head Morph Mods (So Far)

2 years 11 months ago

The trilogy remaster has much better hairstyles this time around, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement. For those looking for an even more improved Commander Shepard, here are some of the best Mass Effect Legendary Edition head morph mods available so far.

Since mod support is still incredibly limited on console outside of Bethesda titles like Elder Scrolls and Fallout, the below mods are just for PC players only. I'm hoping that changes in the future regarding studio consideration of the modding community, but until that happens? It is what it is. So, without further ado, let's dive in, shall we?

Let's start with FemShep because there are many more of those.

In the gallery below, the images from left to right are in the order of the mods offered. You can find the links in the links of the mods in the same order below the gallery to download which head morph mod suits your fancy.

The Coolest Pokémon Cards We Pulled From Sword & Shield – Chilling Reign Booster Packs

2 years 11 months ago

The extremely popular Pokémon Trading Card Game shows no signs of slowing down (even getting more popular over the last year). Later this month, players will have the chance to add a ton of new cards to their collections by way of the new Sword & Shield – Chilling Reign expansion. The expansion adds more than 190 cards to the Pokémon Trading Card Game, including dozens of Pokémon from the Galar region, 15 Pokémon V, eight Pokémon VMAX cards, and several new Single Strike and Rapid Strike cards.

We were sent a box of booster packs for the new Chilling Reign expansion. Upon cracking open the packs, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of gorgeous full-art cards in the expansion. I particularly loved the VMAX Calyrex cards and the Galarian Zapdos. I'll also always have a soft spot for Blissey, so it was cool to snag one of those in my pulls.

Check out the coolest and most powerful cards we pulled from the Pokémon Trading Card Game: Sword & Shield – Chilling Reign expansion below. If you think you want to add some of the cards to your own collection, the expansion launches on June 18.

Latest Destiny 2: Season Of The Splicer Cutscene Is Heartbreaking And Beautifully Told

2 years 11 months ago

We previously talked about how Destiny 2: Season of the Chosen was a huge pivot for the team at Bungie with the narrative surrounding the space shooter. A true turning point for the ongoing story and a positive step into the future of what Destiny 2 will have to offer fans. With Season of the Splicer in full swing, the next step of storytelling has begun, this time giving us a closer look at the Fallen beyond just being enemies and the harrowing reminder that Savathun continues to grow in influence. That being said, the most recent cutscene for season 14 is truly art and showcases that Bungie is not letting that momentum from the previous season wane in the slightest.

Because this article is talking about the most recent story scene, there are obvious spoilers. Please proceed with caution.

The latest update for the MMO brought with it a promise to implement feedback from the community about some of the more overt epileptic triggers in-game and the highly requested Stasis nerf. It also gave us the next step of the evolving story, a step that is honestly stunning and has me excited to see how this season will play out.

An 'Among Us' Chicken Nuggie Sold For Almost $100,000, Because What Is Life?

2 years 11 months ago

Food that is shaped like certain objects has always been a fascination in online markets. Toast with the face of Jesus on it, a Dorito that looks like the pope if you squint one eye and completely shut the other. It's a phenomenon, really. Very important stuff, truly. Adding to that pile of food that sold for exorbitant amounts of money is a chicken nuggie (nugget, I'm an adult) that looks like it came straight out of Among Us. This little fella sold for almost $100,000. I mean, we like a sus little astronaut jelly bean as much as the next person, but this is just getting ridiculous.

The seller that made bank off of processed chicken parts goes by Polizna, and they cashed in smartly when putting up a McDonald's nugget on eBay after noting its suspicious-looking design. Shaped like the little beans we know best from the whodunnit game, nearly 200 bidders competed to win this coveted prize of beauty and fame. However, only one could win, and that winner won a grand prize of being down 100,000 bucks.

You can't make me make new decisions in Mass Effect, I'm boring

2 years 11 months ago

Leading up to the launch of the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, I was looking forward to comparing the decisions I made when I first played the trilogy in 2013, versus the decisions I would make now, so many years later. How much could my opinions have changed? Surely things wouldn't be too different, but I imagined there'd be at least some nuance to my actions.

Alas, much like playing the sneaky archer in Skyrim, I have immediately fallen back into old habits. But you know what? So be it. They're all the correct choices, and you can't make me change them. You're not my mum.

Bungie "continuing to work on" Destiny 2's PC performance problems

2 years 11 months ago

For a good half-a-year now, Destiny 2 has run pretty badly for many PC players. Some folks, particularly those with AMD graphics card, have been crippled by issues like big framerate drops and stuttering. I've suffered it myself, and it sucks. Yesterday, Bungie spoke about the problem, explaining what happened, what they've been doing to fix it, and how far they think they've come. Still a way to go, mind.

Seriously, why does Resident Evil hate hands so much?

2 years 11 months ago

You've gotta feel for Ethan Winters. We've seen plenty of video game protagonists get mawled, maimed and decapitated over the years, but I don't think any of them have had quite so much trauma directed to one, single body part as the hero of Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village. I wrote about the horror of Ethan's franken-hand in Resi 7 a couple of weeks ago, but anyone who's played Village in the last month will know that barely scratches the surface of what ends up happening to him. Village seriously has it out for Ethan's hands, and brrr... just thinking about it gives me the shivers.

The Magnificent Trufflepigs review: the hills are alive with the sound of beeping

2 years 11 months ago

There are two types of people: those who love Mackenzie Crook's gentle sitcom The Detectorists, and those who have never heard of it. The former camp will be extra delighted at the existence of The Magnificent Trufflepigs, where metal detecting in abandoned farm fields collides with the elevator pitch "Firewatch, but make it really English."
