The great Shibuya lifestyle RPG returns in Neo: The World Ends With You

2 years 10 months ago

The World Ends with You came out in 2007 - I just checked - but it still feels a bit like the future. Or maybe it feels like a future. This was an action RPG from Square-Enix perfectly designed around the Nintendo DS, and using a lot of that wonderfully odd console's wonderfully odd features. You tapped the screen to move around and work your way through menus, sure, but when it came time for a battle you controlled different characters on different screens, hectically working away with different input methods as the action hockey-pucked back and forth between your allies. Even when you weren't battling, the game was unusual: an RPG set in modern-day Shibuya, and featuring a cast of stylish teenagers drawn into a deadly set of challenges. Each day a new hurdle: follow clues, solve puzzles and fight monsters if you want to stay alive. Quest givers wore hoodies. Your attack types revolved around pin-badges that you collected. Vital info was texted to you on your flip phone. You could read the minds of passing strangers, delving into a timely world of crushes and workday worries.

It was a game that one initially couldn't see working on anything but the DS, but this is Square-Enix, of course, so ports to everything from smartphones to the Switch ensued, all losing the second screen and a little of the strange magic with it. Now the game has a proper follow-up, in the form of Neo: The World Ends With You, which is headed to Switch and PS4 in July, then the Epic Games Store later this summer. No second screen, but has the magic been rekindled?

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Player Finds Long Lost Mars Rover Easter Egg In Mass Effect 3

2 years 10 months ago

Mass Effect Legendary Edition offers newcomers and veteran fans alike a chance to enjoy the beloved BioWare trilogy on this generation of consoles with all of the previously released story DLC. With so many new players boarding the Normandy for the first time, longtime fans are getting to experience that excitement once more vicariously through a new wave of fans. That being said, there are still secrets being found. Secrets like this Mars Rover Easter egg in Mass Effect 3.

I remember finding this cute little guy a few years ago and I had no idea that it wasn't something people knew about. This has been an Easter egg that has gone largely undiscovered for over ten years, and with all of the news about Mars in real life? It's pretty heckin' cute. Check out the adorable little clip in the tweet below:

Emma later added that she learned how to spot this curious little Rover by finding a thread over on Reddit:

Days Gone Developer Reveals It Has A New IP In The Works

2 years 10 months ago

Bend Studio, the team behind Days Gone and Syphon Filter, has announced it's working on a new IP. The studio shared the news on Twitter yesterday with an open letter to fans. The reveal doesn't share any details regarding what sort of game it is, when it's expected to release, or much else beyond "we're working on something." The news comes after a recent report that the studio isn't moving forward on production of a Days Gone 2 (much to the chagrin of fans).

Despite the lack of substantial details, it's always exciting to see a studio delve into something new, especially if you're a fan of its previous works. You can take a look at the announcement in the embedded tweet below.

If you’re unable to follow the link, here is the transcribed text:

Singularity 6’s Palia Is A Relaxing MMO

2 years 10 months ago

We’ve seen countless MMORPGs all vying to be the one that excels in terms of giant raids, precision combat, and engaging progression. Singularity 6’s first game, Palia, taps into a different kind of loop. Instead of being focused on character progression by means of weapons, armor, and dragonslaying, Palia aims to get players invested in the charms of farming, relationship building, and decorative finesse. If Palia sounds like Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing meets MMO to you, you’re not far from the mark. Pre-alpha access is scheduled to land this summer, and you can sign up here. Dark Horse Comics Dedicates Itself To Gaming With New Division

2 years 10 months ago

Dark Horse Comics has brought some of our favorite games into the realm of graphic novels. Turns out, that's just the beginning. The publisher just recently announced that it has started its own gaming division with Dark Horse Games.

This company has been one of my favorites in the comics world and not just because it gave me more of Dragon Age's Fenris with new tales of our beloved broody elf. Dark Horse has been a leading name in the gaming community with comic adaptations for years, growing exponentially since its debut back in 1986. From Tom Clancy to Mass Effect, there are so many games that Dark Horse has helped bring to life in a new way. The company even offers unique collectibles for our favorite gaming franchises as well, including the famed Witcher series

Final Fantasy VII Remake PS5 Save Transfer Included In New Update

2 years 10 months ago

Final Fantasy VII Remake PS5 save transfers are now available thanks to a new update in place for the Intergrade new-gen enhancements. This means that those that enjoyed the modernized take on a Final Fantasy favorite can now enjoy the tale on a new generation of gaming without having to start from scratch.

When players boot up Final Fantasy VII Remake, they'll see a new option added to the game's main menu. It is there that a new choice has been added, the Upload Save Data option. Click on that and you can choose a save file of your choosing to upload to be directly downloaded onto your PS5 system specifically for Intergrade. For those that may have had several different runs, you're not just limited to just one save file either.

But what about trophies? No worries, trophy data, which is not uncommon, will also transfer over for Intergrade. Players will see all of the new features that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade has on PS5 when the game releases on June 10. This also includes the brand new Yuffie episode, which is exclusive to PS5, and will bring in even more familiar faces to the remake for long-time fans to enjoy.

EWS podcast episode 142: the best backstories special

2 years 10 months ago

My own tragic backstory is that I grew up without any real tragedy, thus meaning my life will never be serialised on Netflix. I have lobbied producers many times, but they just say things like "Half of everyone's parents are divorced, Alice, you're not special!". Luckily, games provide richer narrative ground to tread, so this week's Electronic Wireless Show podcast is all about our favourite backstories in games!

It is, however, a highly derailed podcast even for us. First of all we need to clear up what exactly a casserole is, and then we get into this whole thing about what a gritty reboot of Matthew would be like, and also I describe the time I and my brothers were so hungover one Christmas Day a decade ago that we couldn't stand up. There's a bunch of games stuff in there, though. Also: The Sopranos.

Prime Day PS5 deals: all the best offers

2 years 10 months ago

It's been tough enough to find any PS5 consoles to buy so the idea of seeing any Amazon Prime Day PS5 deals this year was a wild hope more than anything. Nevertheless, as we've seen over the first day of the sale, there have been some decent reductions on games and accessories that are worth checking out if you've been lucky enough to get a PS5. If not, there's the possibility of a PS5 drop today, too!

All very best PS5 Prime Day deals are below. You can also find more of the best Amazon Prime Day deals on our dedicated hub page now the sale is underway proper or follow Jelly Deals on Twitter for regular updates across both days. If we're underwhelmed this month, we'll be hoping for some solid PS5 Black Friday deals, instead!

We would love to say that there will be a PS5 restock during Amazon Prime Day but the retailer has offered absolutely no indication that this will happen - despite adding a new Ratchet & Clank PS5 bundle to its store.

Halo Combat Evolved: is classic mode fixed with the latest Master Chief Collection update?

2 years 10 months ago

We first took a look at Halo Combat Evolved on PC over a year ago, concluding that while it was a good enough port of the existing Xbox version, the foundations of the port themselves were flawed. The Anniversary Edition upgrades were all present and correct, but 'classic' Halo was built from Gearbox's 2003 Windows port, which doesn't hold a candle to Bungie's Xbox original. Season seven of Halo: The Master Chief Collection is set to address this and so far, I'm impressed with what I've seen based on preview 'flight' versions of the game sent out to 343's dedicated Halo fans.

There are still notable omissions - split-screen local multiplayer doesn't seem to have been added (and it's still absent without leave across the PC Master Chief Collection) - but generally speaking, we are so much closer to the authentic Bungie era Halo experience - with the bonus of being able to enjoy that original experience at much higher frame-rates than the original. But really, beyond leveraging the performance advantages of modern hardware, it's the attempt to recapture the authentic OG Halo look and feel that is most important and everything we've seen so far of the season seven update suggests we're looking at a profound improvement.

Throne-war MMO Crowfall finally gets a release date

2 years 10 months ago

Crowfall, a player versus player MMO you can win and lose, finally has a release date: 6th July. And you can gain immediate access to it now by signing up for the beta.

It's an MMO I've been following since it Kickstarted in 2015 (after which it raised more money via player investment and in-game property sales), and one I've played a bit of recently. It's a slightly tricky one to explain.

In general, it's an online fantasy game about fighting other players. That is the point. There's a bit of monster fighting, but only really to serve as a tutorial while you quickly level up. There's a level-cap of 30 which you can get quite close to in a few hours if you're speedy.

E3 provides a little more detail on what to expect each day

2 years 10 months ago

With just a week to go until the still-rather-nebulous E3 2021, its organiser the ESA has issued a rough guide on what to expect via its livestreams each day.

Alongside concrete press conference details already announced separately by certain companies (Microsoft, Ubisoft, Nintendo), there are mentions of various publisher presentations which will slot into E3 2021 programming.

Hopefully we'll get a clearer timeframe for everything over the next week.

Square Enix's E3 2021 Showcase Will Highlight Babylon's Fall, Reveal New Eidos Montreal Title

2 years 10 months ago

Now that we know what the entire E3 schedule looks like, Square Enix has gone ahead and pulled the curtain back on its E3 2021 digital keynote, detailing some of the big announcements it has in store. The 40-minute presentation airs June 13 at 12:15 p.m. Pacific on Square’s YouTube and Twitch channels and will feature, among other things, the debut of a brand-new game and an update on a long-lost title.

First off, the stream will provide a new look at the long-awaited but seldom seen Babylon’s Fall. For those who don’t remember, this is the upcoming action game by Platinum Games that was first announced in June 2018. We don't know much about it other than that it's a stylish combat game that blends medieval and sci-fi aesthetics, and we haven’t heard a peep about it since its last gameplay showing in December 2019.

The stream will also feature the premiere of a new title from Eidos Montreal. There’s no hint of what the studio has up its sleeve, but the last big title to come from the studio was 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Eidos also lent a hand in developing Marvel’s Avengers.
