Warhammer games and books are going cheap in Fanatical’s latest flash sale

3 years 9 months ago

If you just can’t get enough Warhammer, then boy do the folks at Fanatical have a good deal for you. As part of their latest Red Hot Sale, they’ve not only got a bunch of Warhammer games on sale, including 75% off Vermintide 2, but they’ve also put together a new eBook bundle from Black Library, letting you grab six Warhammer books for just £1. Alternatively, you can buy 26 of them for £18 instead of their usual price of *checks notes* £165, which, yes, I think officially qualifies as “a good deal”.

People's private names for Valorant map spots are delightful

3 years 9 months ago

Valorant

is great, when it isn’t making me sad. So goes my Valorant review. Friends are a key component of Riot’s snazzy new wizard FPS, primarily because they won’t (usually) swear at you when you do something stupid. A nice side benefit, though, is that you wind up with your own private and superior ways of describing parts of the map. These are important, because you often need to very quickly communicate where an enemy is.

It’s the linguistic Wild West, and it delights me. Spawns become Oreos. Bombs get “defrosted”. I asked Twitter for a peek into the private nomenclature of other friendship groups, and I’m very glad I did.

Taiko No Tatsujin: Drum 'N' Fun Is Getting Free Songs From Other Games To Celebrate 1 Million Sales

3 years 9 months ago

Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun launched on the Nintendo Switch in 2018, and since then it has enjoyed considerable success. The game has now sold 1 million copies worldwide, as announced on Twitter, and all players will receive free DLC to celebrate.

The new songs, as reported by Gematsu, are all from other Namco Bandai titles. 10 songs will be added on July 9 in Japan; it's not clear when an international release will happen. The pack, called the "I Love Games Pack," contains the following songs:

  • Boku no → Chikyuu Bokura no Chikyuu (Mr. Driller DrillLand)
  • Moji Pittan Medley (Kotoba no Puzzle: Moji Pittan)
  • Katamari On the Rocks Main Theme (Katamari Damacy)
  • No Way Back (God Eater)
  • The Arrow Was Shot (Tales of the Abyss)
  • In the Zone (Ace Combat X2: Joint Assault)
  • Brave Sword, Braver Soul (Soulcalibur II)
  • Karma (Tatsujin Mix) (Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion)
  • Namcot Medley
  • Tanoshii Taiko Dojo

An "Esports Tournament" mode is also coming to the game, and it will add an eight-player bracketed tournament mode for serious players.

Whether the PS4 equivalent, Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum Session, will receive a similar DLC pack is unknown.

Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun received a 7/10 in GameSpot's review. Reviewer Heidi Kemps wrote that it was "a solid rhythm game package that's easy to get into and rewarding the more you play it."

Layers Of Fear Devs Explain Why Their Next Game Is Skipping Current-Gen For Xbox Series X

3 years 9 months ago

Whereas many of the games releasing at the end of 2020 will come to current- and next-generation consoles, Bloober Team's The Medium is skipping the older systems and only coming to Xbox Series X and PC.

Jacek Zięba, a producer at Bloober Team, said in a new interview with Xbox that bypassing the current-generation consoles is in the best interest of The Medium. "We don't have any porting plans for current-gen consoles, so the Xbox Series X will offer the experience we always meant for the game," he said.

Zięba said Bloober could have released The Medium on Xbox One, but this would have come at a cost. "Of course, theoretically, you could rescope any game idea, but in our case it would mean completely changing the core game features," he said. "Thanks to the power of Xbox Series X, we can develop the game the way we have always envisioned it."

Beyond A Steel Sky Releasing On PC This Month After A 26-Year Wait

3 years 9 months ago

Beyond A Steel Sky, which recently released on Apple Arcade, is finally nearly here for PC fans. The sequel to Revolution's incredible 1994 point-and-click adventure game Beneath A Steel Sky releases for Steam on July 16.

The game returns players to the world of the original game, and once again has you playing as Robert Foster. Like the original, it features art from Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons, and it's set in a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk Australian city. The game is a direct sequel, with many Easter eggs for returning fans.

The Apple Arcade version features gorgeous visuals and relatively intuitive controls, but many longtime series fans are no doubt excited to play the game on PC.

The game is yet again developed by Revolution Software, best known for the Broken Sword series. A sequel to Beneath A Steel Sky was initially promised as a stretch goal in the Kickstarter for Broken Sword 5, and although the game's pledges did not reach the goal, Revolution decided to make the game anyway.

GameSpot will have a review of Beyond A Steel Sky live closer to the game's PC release.

Fallout 76's next big update hits the public test server next week

3 years 9 months ago

Bethesda literally just dropped Update 20 into Fallout 76 this week, but they're getting ready for the next big patch as early as next week. As announced on their official blog, Update 21 is coming soon, with a layover on the Public Test Server (PTS) as early as next week.

Bethesda says this one isn't coming until August, and will (surprise) contain a ton of bug fixes, among quality of life changes. The publisher also teases a return to the Monongah Mine. As a reminder, the PTS is now literally public, as anyone who accesses Fallout 76 directly on the Bethesda launcher can give it a go.

Update 20 should keep people busy for a while with its public teams and seasonal gimmick, so long as they get their house in order.

Catherine: Full Body's Nintendo Switch port is sweet

3 years 9 months ago

If you told me back in 2011 that Catherine was going to make its way to a future Nintendo console, I would have let out the most uproarious laughter and/or that cute Animal Crossing question mark reaction. My, how the times have changed.

Here we are in the year of our lord 2020 where literally nothing makes sense anymore, so why not port one of the most erotic puzzle games of all time to a Nintendo console? Seriously though, it's a smart move on Atlus' part to expand the Catherine: Full Body remaster to other consoles – especially one that is made for portable transportation.

However, it's a completely different story if you want to play this one in public...

Capcom just announced a Mega Man VR game, but of course you can only play it in Japan

3 years 9 months ago

I'm pretty much always thinking about when I'll return to Japan, but these region-exclusive event announcements only make it easier. Revealed this morning on Capcom's official amusement landing page, Mega Man VR will allow players to experience the world of Mega Man 11 through a VR lens.

The big catch —as a lot of these special projects tend to roll with — is that it's exclusive to a physical location in Japan. That location is Capcom's store at Plaza Ikebukuro, a self-described "entertainment plaza" facility that opened in mid-2019. There are no plans to release it on home devices at this time.

Amazingly, there's a cute little story to this VR spinoff (Dr. Wily is trying to hack the VR world, so Mega Man has to fight back with VR tech developed by Dr. Light).  It's confirmed to be a single-player experience, though the event-based multiplayer VR space is still growing.

Capcom says that you can check it out at Plaza Ikebukuro starting on July 18. Demos will run from 10AM JST through 9:45PM JST.

Dead Cells gets a big update, celebrates 3 million sales

3 years 9 months ago

We don’t really post about big numbers, but sometimes a game lots of us really like boasts about a really really big one. Three million people have bought Dead Cells since it came out on early access in 2017, which is frankly ridiculous. That’s three times this many dots, except every dot is a human who chose to sacrifice precious money* so they could enjoy a videogame. And they were right to.

It’s an excellent platforming roguelike that keeps getting more so. The “Update Of Plenty” update landed on Wednesday, bringing a big balance overhaul while reworking weapons and the economy with an eye to “open up a wider range of builds, while not sacrificing what made meta builds fun”. Crossbows are two-handed now! Makes sense.

How to get the Hyper Scape beta via Twitch drops

3 years 9 months ago

Three characters look across a cityscape in the Hyper Scape beta.

Hyper Scape is Ubisoft’s Battle Royale game and is having a beta test right now. Hyper Scape is quite unique when compared to the established battle royale games like Fortnite and Apex Legends. It has guns and skills can be upgraded by picking up duplicates, respawn points to revive your teammates, and a map that shrinks per district rather than an ever shrinking circle.

If that sounds good to you and you want to play the game for yourself, we have the steps you need to take in order to get into the Hyper Scape beta.

Animal Crossing update adds new rewards, changes NPC visits

3 years 9 months ago

The first wave of Animal Crossing's summer update was released earlier today, but it only took a few hours for dataminers to dive into the code and discover some new secrets.

Thanks to the new NPCs introduced in the update, players will be able to earn some new items and DIYs by helping either pirate-themed Gulliver or Pascal, the red sea otter. As hinted in the update trailer, there's a whole bunch of pirate and mermaid-themed items, which some dataminers have kindly put into some neat tables:

While the selection is quite limited, there are also a couple of new seasonal items that can be purchased from Nook Shopping, including a summer solstice crown, winter-solstice sweater, and some rather lovely bamboo grass.

2K first to make next-gen game editions $10 more expensive

3 years 9 months ago

This week, 2K Games became the first publisher to announce a markup in pricing for the next-gen versions of a console game - taking the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X editions of NBA 2K21 up to $69.99.

That's a $10 increase on the current-gen console versions of NBA 2K21 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. (And no, the game won't support Smart Delivery, Microsoft's free cross-gen upgrade program.)

Here in the UK, Amazon and GAME list the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions of NBA 2K21 at £64.99, a £10 markup on the PS4 and Xbox One versions at £54.99.

Other Publishers May Be Considering Raising Prices on PS5 and Xbox Series X

3 years 9 months ago
Following the news that NBA 2K21 will cost $10 more on PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X, the research firm IDG Consulting has said that other game publishers are also considering price increases for their games. Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, IDG President and CEO Yoshio Osaki explained how game pricing has "remained flat since 2005, whereas TV and movie pricing has increased significantly." "The last time that next-gen launch software pricing went up was in 2005 and 2006, when it went from $49.99 to $59.99 at the start of the Xbox 360 and PS3 generation," Osaki said. "During that time, the costs and prices in other affiliated verticals have gone up." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/02/nba-2k21-ps5-xbox-series-x-versions-will-cost-more"] These other affiliated verticals include next-gen console game production costs, which have seen increases of "200% to 300%, depending on the IP, studio and genre," without an increase in the price of the games. For comparisons sake, "cinema ticket prices have risen 39%, Netflix subscription costs have gone up 100%, and Cable TV packages have risen by 105%." "Even with the increase to $69.99 for next-gen, that price increase from 2005 to 2020 next-gen is only up 17%, far lower than the other comparisons," Osaki continued. "While the cost of development and publishing have gone up, and pricing in other entertainment verticals has also gone up substantially, next-gen software pricing has not reflected these increases.
