Overlook Trail Debuts a Bizarre New Trailer at Day of Devs Event

3 years 10 months ago

One of the strangest games I’ve ever seen, Overlook Trail, continued its campaign of being very weird today at the Day of the Devs livestream event.

Its new trailer features some striking visuals, similar to other gameplay videos of Overlook Trail shown off in the past. It also features a dive out of a person’s mouth into a bowl of Cheerios. Check it out for yourself below.

I really don’t know what this game is, or what it’s like actually playing it. I’m not sure anyone except maybe the developers, Longhand Electric, knows exactly what the heck is going on. Hopefully at some point this game will actually release, and we can all find out together.

Right now the official site of Overlook Trail houses what little information is known about the game, so be sure to check that out if you’re itching to learn more. The release date is still TBA.

Tomorrow's Apex Legends patch has some major legend tweaks

3 years 10 months ago

At last week's EA Play event, Apex Legends kicked off the festivities, probably in part because its news was so pressing: the upcoming Lost Treasures event launches tomorrow. With it come several features that were shown in the video and/or explicitly pointed out by Respawn.

Today, Respawn released patch notes and a developer commentary video, and there is more changing than just the addition of mobile respawn beacons, Crypto's town takeover, and Lifeline's ability to have her Drone of Compassion revive teammates without her help. A good portion of the thirteen-character roster is getting tweaked, and some of those tweaks may have a significant impact on how the battle royale's competitive scene plays out.

The Witcher Season 2 Filming Set to Restart in August

3 years 10 months ago

After having its filming interrupted by fallout of COVID-19, Netflix’s second season of its The Witcher adaptation is finally set to get back underway on Aug. 17. A rather poetic announcement from the show’s Twitter account delivered the good news earlier today.

Prior to lockdown measures being enforced, The Witcher’s cast were in full swing, filming just south of London, U.K, before newcomer Kristofer Hivju, the Norwegian actor known for his role in Game of Thrones and set to play Nivellen in The Witcher, tested positive for COVID-19.

Understandably, Netflix is being extremely cautious in its approach to filming moving forward. An interview with showrunner Lauren. S Hissrich conducted by TheWrap earlier this month shed some light on the processes and challenges filming amid a global pandemic.

We also learned during that same interview some interesting tidbits about season 2’s various story beats, new characters, and more.

Top Valorant Rank Gets A New Name

3 years 10 months ago

The next Valorant update will add in the highly-anticipated Competitive mode and ranked system that early access players got the opportunity to test out during the closed beta. Ranked play is coming so soon that Riot has given players a peek into what's new with the updated Competitive mode, including the new name of its top rank: Radiant.

During the beta, the top rank was called Valorant, which Riot cites as a source of "potential confusion." A new blog post outlines Riot's thought process behind the rank rename: "Although we still really like having our top rank be something unique to our game and aligned with our IP, we’ve decided to remove VALORANT as the name of our top rank to help reduce potential confusion of the game vs the rank," Riot states. "The new name for our top rank will represent Agents infused with powers, known as Radiant."

In addition to the name change, Riot has also provided a graphic with the newly designed rank iconography.

Spider-Man: 6 Miles Morales Stories That Could Inspire the PS5 Game

3 years 10 months ago
For many Marvel fans, there's no bigger selling point for the upcoming Playstation 5 than the newly announced Spider-Man: Miles Morales. This upcoming spinoff of 2018's Marvel's Spider-Man puts gamers in the shoes of the rookie hero as he learns the tricks of the superhero trade and works to define his own path as Spidey. Marvel's Spider-Man is notable for drawing a great deal of inspiration from the comics for its meaty, ambitious story mode. We assume Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be no different. Read on for six key Miles Morales comics that could influence Insomniac's new game. Watch the video version of this article at the top of the page or below, or read on for the written version. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/these-miles-morales-comics-could-inspire-his-ps5-spider-man-game"] Warning: Beware of some spoilers for Marvel Spider-Man and Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man comics! [poilib element="accentDivider"]

Prowler

MAR120560._SX1280_QL80_TTD_With the first Spider-Man game having already showcased Miles' origin story, the most logical place for this followup to draw from would be Miles' sophomore adventure in the pages of Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. The "Prowler" arc really set the tone for the character and his universe going forward, dealing heavily with the antagonistic relationship between Miles and his cat burglar uncle, Aaron Davis. While Miles generally tends to grapple with the same villains as Peter Parker, Uncle Aaron is the closest thing he has to an arch-rival.

The Messenger Prequel, Sea Of Stars, Gets New Trailer

3 years 10 months ago

Developer Sabotage Studio, the team behind the critically acclaimed action-platformer The Messenger, has shared a new trailer for its upcoming game. The trailer for Sea of Stars, which is a prequel to The Messenger and is embedded below, shows what we can expect of its gameplay when it drops sometime in 2022.

The trailer has a very Chrono Trigger vibe to it, as we get to see exploration from both the traditional map and the overworld. We also get introduced to three of Sea of Stars' six playable characters, as well as a look at some puzzle-solving and turn-based combat.

Sea of Stars was revealed earlier this year through a Kickstarter campaign. The game is billed as a throwback to the 16-bit era of JRPGs, which brings to mind titles such as Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG. While it's unclear how two of the three confirmed playable characters--Valeria and Zale--fit into The Messenger's universe, they did make an appearance in the game during the Sunken Shrine dungeon. Sabotage said this was a direct reference to what was next for the studio.

Sea of Stars (The Messenger Prequel) Gets a New Trailer Showing off the Chrono Trigger-Esque Combat

3 years 10 months ago

During the Summer Games Fest Day of the Devs stream, a new trailer for Sabotage Studio’s Sea of Stars was showcased, giving viewers a deeper look into the retro-inspired turn-based combat, the characters, and the setting.

You can watch the Summer Games Fest trailer for Sea of Stars down below. The title is currently in development and is planned to release in 2022 for PC and Consoles, which we assume means that it’s coming to the Switch:

Here’s an official description of the game from Steam:

Sea of Stars is a turn-based RPG inspired by the classics. It tells the story of two Children of the Solstice who will combine the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic, the only force capable of fending off the monstrous creations of the evil alchemist known as The Fleshmancer.

New Knuckle Sandwich Trailer Shows off Quirky RPG Gameplay

3 years 10 months ago

Earlier today during the Day of the Devs stream, we got a brand-new look at Knuckle Sandwich, a quirky RPG in the style of Earthbound and Undertale. This game tells a tale that developer Andrew Brophy describes as a, “…personal game hiding inside an offbeat turn-based RPG.”

From the start, you can see the similarities to other RPG’s battle systems like Earthbound and Undertale but with its own twists and turns that make it unique. Like Earthbound, all the enemies are visible in the overworld. And just like Undertale, all the special moves bring up bite-sized mini-games.

Knuckle Sandwich also has a cartoonish art style that is filled with loud colors and 3D animated models for cutscenes. Despite the arresting visuals, the soundtrack is surprising chill by comparison. But of course, it picks up a bit during battles.

You can check out even more details than what was shown off in this trailer on the official Kickstarter page. You can also find the new trailer for Knuckle Sandwich down below (one hour and 39 minutes into the stream).

Space MMO Starbase Shown Off During Day of the Devs

3 years 10 months ago

Starbase from developer Frozenbyte (Trine series, Has-Been Heroes) had gameplay shown off during The Game Awards presentation of Day of the Devs.

Starbase is a space and spacecraft MMO with creation and design mechanics. As the game is voxel-based, the comparisons to Minecraft are unavoidable, and that seems to blend perfectly with some of a similarity to No Man’s Sky.

The destruction is heavy as you see someone in their ship as it gets hits by an explosion and blows out one of the walls. But it seems that is a handy ship bay station that you can return to when you need to fix up your ship.

It is shown you can work with “thruster and generator values” in an effort to keep your ship sailing through space, so it’s a safe bet that ship creation is rather robust.

The devs mentioned there is a goal to Starbase, and players will have to navigate to one of three moons to accomplish this objective. As the game is said to be an MMO, you will have other players to potentially worry about as you make your journey through space.

However, it doesn’t sound all bad with other players around. You can build a ship with other plays or even create a ship design and sell it to others.

You can find the segment shown off during Day of the Devs below (it originally was revealed a few games after Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time and right after The Artful Escape):

Nintendo Announces Joker And Hero Amiibo Figures

3 years 10 months ago

During today's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate stream, where director Masahiro Sakurai introduced the next wave of DLC featuring Min Min from Arms and costumes from the Fallout franchise, Nintendo announced two new Amiibos based on characters that came to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate during the first wave of DLC. Joker, the protagonist from Persona 5, and Hero from Dragon Quest XI are each slated to get their own Amiibo this fall.

Joker was released as DLC in April 2019, while Hero joined the ever-growing crossover battlefield in July 2019, meaning players have been awaiting news of these Amiibo figures for quite some time. Both were released as a part of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Fighters Pass Vol. 1. The remaining DLC characters to have not received an Amiibo are (in order) Banjo & Kazooie, Terry, Byleth, and Min Min. The Super Smash Bros. team also has five more DLC characters to reveal as a part of Fighters Pass Vol. 2.

Both the Joker and Hero Amiibo figures are slated for release this fall.

Avatar: The Last Airbender skins coming to Smite in weird crossover

3 years 10 months ago

The next fighters coming to mythological MOBA Smite are not gods or fantastical creatures at all, they’re movie characters. Hi-Rez Studios today announced a cross-over with Avatar: The Last Airbender, the M. Night Shyamalan movie. Aang, Zuko, and Korra (and her dog Naga) are all coming to Smite as skins for existing characters, to be clear, not new characters. They’re looking a lot more cartoony than their original movie designs but hey, I suppose we have to allow a little creative liberty. Smite added Cthulhu earlier this month so Avatar is fairly mundane, really.

Riot Details Valorant’s Competitive Ranked Mode Ahead of Patch 1.02

3 years 10 months ago

Riot Games’ tactical hero shooter Valorant launched in full earlier this month, but the Competitive ranked mode that had been present throughout its closed beta wasn’t included. That’s soon to change with Patch 1.02, though, which is set to launch later this week. And ahead of its launch, the developer is finally offering details on what players can expect to look forward to.

Structurally, it’s fairly similar to the beta, with the bulk of changes centered around two key areas: changes to rank iconography and names, and improved functionality that should make it easier to enjoy with friends.

Original Diablo 2 Creators Share Thoughts On Rumored Remaster

3 years 10 months ago
Max Schaefer and Matt Uelmen, two of the developers responsible for legendary action RPG Diablo II, have given their thoughts on the rumored Diablo II Remaster, which is reportedly coming later this year. The statement comes from tomorrow's new episode of IGN Unfiltered, in which Ryan McCaffrey sat down with Echtra Games' Max Schaefer and Matt Uelmen to talk about Torchlight 3, Diablo 2, the action-RPG genre, and much more. Rumors of a Diablo II remaster have been circulating for some time, but earlier this year, those rumors came into sharper focus with sources suggesting it would be called Diablo 2: Resurrected. These rumors also come from the same source which correctly predicted the Overwatch 2, Diablo IV, and World of Warcraft: Shadowlands announcements. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2015/11/03/history-of-awesome-diablo-ii"] When asked what they would and would not want to see from the potential remaster, Schaefer said, "First of all, I think it's probably impossible to really capture it... It wasn't even a true 3D game, everything was rendered sprites and so to really capture the exact feel of what happens when you click in a 3D environment is going to be challenging at best." "[The development team on the remaster is] going to have to spend a lot of their time [on capturing that feeling], not just on recreating maybe slightly higher fidelity graphics and all that... that's the easy part. It's easy to go back and kind of 1:1, make the game look better. It's going to be the feel and the atmosphere that are kind of inherent in the technology that was behind it, which was... at this point we can look back and say it's kind of 'spaghetti code.'" "It was [built using a] custom engine... it was stuff that hadn't been done before.

Crash Bandicoot 4's multiverse adventure revealed with no mention of PC, yet anyway

3 years 10 months ago

Crash is back this year to pick up where the original trilogy left off. Activision say that Crash Bandicoot 4 is a continuation of the old Crash story and will also be picking up the classic platform-y bits as well. They’ve popped out a new trailer today with classic bandicoot hijinx announcing Crash 4 coming in October this year. There’s no mention of a PC release, but we’d be pretty surprised if Activision don’t include us before it’s all said and done.

Aang and Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender and Korra and Naga from The Legend of Korra will be headed to Smite with the July 2020 Avatar Battle Pass. Ready At Dawn is now a part of Oculus Studios

3 years 10 months ago

Some of us still associate Ready At Dawn with the cinematic PS4 shooter The Order: 1886, but recently, the studio has leaned into VR with games like Lone Echo and its in-development sequel Lone Echo II. That path is even more set in stone today. Facebook went ahead and acquired Ready At Dawn.

According to Oculus, "the entire Ready At Dawn team will be joining the Oculus Studios team."

The current staff "will continue to build amazing game experiences as an independent studio operating out of their current offices in Irvine, CA, and Portland, OR, with the full support of Facebook and the Oculus Studios team behind them." Despite a delay, Lone Echo II is aiming for a 2020 launch.

Big picture, Ready At Dawn is striving for "memorable, immersive, and innovative VR content."

This is a smart buy. As for other potential studio acquisitions, Oculus Studios says it is "exploring many ways to accelerate VR, and we have awesome and innovative plans for the next few years of gaming."

New The Artful Escape Gameplay Revealed at Day of the Devs June Stream

3 years 10 months ago

It’s been a few years since The Artful Escape was announced at E3 back in 2017. But today during Day of the Devs we got a look at some brand new gameplay details.

In the first trailer that revealed the game three years ago featured a poster and this trailer built on the previous ones by reiterating the story. The main character, Francis Vendetti goes off on an adventure to find his own stage persona and step out of his uncle’s shadow.

The Artful Escape’s designer, Johnny Galvatron, described Francis’ uncle Johnson as that universe’s Bob Dylan. That would be quite the sizable shadow to escape from.

We also saw a bunch of new details about how the gameplay works. As Francis explores the Cosmic Extrodinary, he can use his guitar to extend his jumps and interact with the world. It makes for some truly beautiful and mind-blowing spectacles as Francis looks to find his place in the world.

You can check out the full official trailer for The Artful Escape below.

The Last of Us Part 2: 14 Brilliant Little Details

3 years 10 months ago

The Last of Us Part 2 is a gritty dark tale of revenge, but that doesn’t mean a post-apocalyptic America isn’t full of a ton of easter eggs, awesome details and unexpected references.

Here’s 14 brilliant little details we’ve spotted in The Last of Us Part 2. Spoilers are coming, you’ve been warned

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/20/14-brilliant-little-details-in-the-last-of-us-part-2"]

1 / Wolves and Their Friends

Infected aren’t the only threats in Seattle, and you’ll often find yourself face-to-face with the WLF, also known as Wolves. What may appear to be faceless fodder though actually turn out to be a tight group of friends, each with their own names, relationships and pain to suffer when one of their nearest and dearest is brutally executed by Ellie. Seems Naughty Dog aren’t satisfied with you mowing down NPCs guilt free anymore, and are determined to make you feel like utter crap after you send an arrow directly into Alan’s face. Alan

2 / A Man’s Best Friend

Their friends extend beyond 2 legs too. Many of the WLF bring their loyal dog companions along for the journey, and understandably their reactions are amplified when their pet pooch is unceremoniously merked. Like the Wolves, these lovable mutts also have names as well, doubling down on the guilt you feel when sending an arrow directly into a dog called Bear; and into his owner's heart.

Smite Adds Avatar: The Last Airbender & The Legend of Korra Characters in July

3 years 10 months ago

Three characters from Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra series will become character skins in Smite, Hi-Rez Studios announced during the Summer Game Fest event today.

Aang, Korra, and Zuko will be part of the Avatar Battle Pass when it launches this July, though the characters are simply skins for existing Smite characters already in the game. Merlin will receive the Aang skin, Skadi will receive the Korra skin, and Susano will receive the Zuko skin.

Smite is a free-to-play third-person multiplayer online battle arena video game that features gods, goddesses, and mythological figures in five-versus-five combat. The game originally launched in closed beta 2012, fully launched for PC in 2014, and has been continually updated since with new characters and modes.

There are over 100 playable characters in the game featuring ancient gods, though that changed last week with the release of Cthulhu, an octopus-like monster that was first introduced by writer H. P. Lovecraft in 1928.

Aang, Korra, and Zuko are the first skins in the game to be directly tied to an existing franchise, which first started in 2005 with Avatar: The Last Airbender followed by The Legend of Korra in 2012.
