Netflix's The Witcher Set To Resume Season 2 Production In August

3 years 10 months ago

Following a massively successful first season on Netflix, The Witcher is set to resume production on its second season. In March, The Witcher became one of the first series to halt production in wake of now-rampant COVID-19 pandemic. Today, Netflix confirmed the second season will resume production on August 17.

The Witcher stars Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, and Anya Chalotra. Its debut season premiered on Netflix on December 20, 2019 to strong reception and even stronger viewership, with Netflix touting more than 76 million viewers watching at least two minutes of the series within the first month. The renewed interest in the franchise also spiked sales for 2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

While we don't know if this production delay will also delay the scheduled release of the second season on Netflix, The Witcher's sophomore effort was announced for release sometime in 2021.

How COVID-19 Is Impacting EA's Business

3 years 10 months ago

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, more people are staying home and playing video games. As such, spending on gaming has grown, and Electronic Arts is among the companies that is benefitting. In a new "fireside chat," EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said the company is expected to announce its biggest-ever Q1, which runs April-June.

EA said in May that it expects to make $5.525 billion in revenue and a profit of $978 million for the period, which is a record for Q1, but Jorgensen said that the real numbers will be even bigger than that.

The full numbers will be announced during EA's earnings report on July 30, but Jorgensen said today, "What I will tell you is it has been much stronger than we anticipated."

Borderlands 3 Bounty Of Blood DLC Adds 4 Gameplay Objects To Encourage New Combat Strategies

3 years 10 months ago

On June 25, Borderlands 3 will get its third campaign expansion, Bounty of Blood. In a GameSpot Play For All interview (which is embedded below), Gearbox creative director Matt Cox talked about four new additions that the DLC will implement into Borderlands 3's combat loop.

"We wanted to take four gameplay objects and throw them into the combat mix," Cox said. "So while we still have that core loop going on, we have different avenues of different styles of combat and ways to negotiate all the craziness in Borderlands."

Each of these four new gameplay objects are designed to encourage the player to tackle combat a little bit differently in Bounty of Blood. "So there's something called a traitor weed where if you shoot it, it releases these bugs that turn enemies to your side for eight to nine seconds," Cox said. "And a core-sploder, if you melee it, it will shotgun out high-damage shrapnel. There's also a breezer, which acts sort of like a jump-pad but it soars you into the air by a puff of air. And then there's a telezapper, which is essentially a teleporter--it lets the player travel from point A to point B instantaneously."

EA Says It Will "Double Down" On Star Wars Games Going Forward

3 years 10 months ago

With Star Wars, EA has one of the most sought-after licenses in all of entertainment--and the company plans to take full advantage of it. In a "fireside chat," EA executives spoke about how the company plans to "double down" on Star Wars after the huge success of Star Wars: Battlefront 1 and 2, Galaxy of Heroes, and Jedi Fallen Order more recently.

"Up is my hope--up and to the right," EA CEO Andrew Wilson said about where he hopes the company will take Star Wars in the future. "We have a tremendous relationship with Disney. We have a tremendous relationship with Lucas. We have a longstanding relationship with them going all the way back to Star Wars The Old Republic that we launched in 2011."

Wilson called out Star Wars: Battlefront 1 and 2 as top-performers from EA's partnership with Disney on Star Wars. Those games have combined to sell around 35 million copies, he said. Wilson added that the mobile game Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes has enjoyed "extraordinary" success, and it continues to perform well. Additionally, Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order sold 10 million copies to stand out as another big success.

Borderlands 3 Bounty Of Blood DLC Won't Reintroduce An Old Character Like Previous DLCs

3 years 10 months ago

The third campaign expansion for Borderlands 3, Bounty of Blood, is scheduled to release on June 25. In a GameSpot Play For All interview, Gearbox creative director Matt Cox revealed that this new DLC would break the pattern of seeing the return of a Borderlands character. You can watch the full interview in the video embedded below.

"We do have some freedom to try some new things with certain story moments," Cox said. "And we're keeping a lot of the story close to the chest because we built something that we think is pretty special--some surprises here and there. And I just want to say this: When I say surprises, I know a lot of people think, 'Ah, returning characters are coming back, who is it?' But I just want to be very clear that the only returning characters are the Vault Hunters themselves. The planet of Gehenna and all the characters we meet are all brand-new."

Both of Borderlands 3's first two campaign DLCs saw the return of fan-favorite Borderlands characters. In Mad Moxxi's Heist of the Handsome Jack, you teamed up with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel's Timothy and the Lovecraft-themed Love, Guns, and Tentacles reintroduced Borderlands 2's Gaige. Based on the teaser image for the fourth and final DLC expansion, it's assumed DLC 4 will see us reunite with Borderlands 2's Krieg, which would mean that Bounty of Blood will be the only campaign expansion not focused around a returning character.

Marvel's Avengers--All The Benefits Offered In The PS5 Version

3 years 10 months ago

Marvel's Avengers has been confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series X with a free upgrade program, meaning that Iron Man and the gang will be making the jump to next-gen. Some further details about the PlayStation 5 version have come to light, and we now have a better idea of what benefits will be offered by this upgrade.

On the PlayStation Blog, and in a press release we received, various upgrades have been discussed. Next-gen versions will get faster load times, higher resolution, and superior textures, and Crystal Dynamics has also promised that the PS5 version will make use of the DualSense controller's haptic feedback and the system's spatial audio.

PS5 users will also be able to choose between two different modes: Enhanced Graphics Mode and High Framerate Mode. This means you can either play the game in 60FPS with a dynamic 4k resolution, or boost the graphics for "the highest image quality possible." The system's SSD will also allow for much faster texture load-in.

When Manny and Mel turn left to go down the last few sets of stairs to the kennels, move past the stairs to a row of wooden benches full of laundry, and you’ll find a coin on a bench.

3 years 10 months ago

Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson shared some high level details on where the company is headed in the future, and betting could be on the horizon--but not anytime soon.

During a "fireside chat" with the company's top management, Wilson said EA's goal on a longer timeline is to reach players where they are as part of a bigger ambition to expand the company's reach.

"On a slightly longer term time horizon, there are another couple of vectors we think will drive growth," Wilson said. One of these is betting in some capacity, Wilson said.

3 years 10 months ago

Today, Square Enix announced that Marvel’s Avengers will be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X when the console’s launch in the holiday of 2020.

Square Enix also announced that “players who own the current-gen version of the game will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version at no additional cost, regardless if players are moving from PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X.”

And not only will you be able to upgrade at no cost, but you’ll also be able to transfer your player profile to continue on your progression path. Cross-gen play will also be supported so that PS5 players can play with PS4 players and Xbox Series X players can play with Xbox One users.

The next-gen version of Marvel’s Avengers will come loaded with new features to take advantage of the power of the PS5 (more details on Xbox Series X, Stadia, and PC coming later).

These features include:

  • Extremely fast load times
  • Boosted resolution and fidelity
  • Improved texturing
  • Ray tracing

PS5 players can also choose between an Enhanced Graphics Mode or High Framerate mode. Although it wasn’t confirmed, you can expect a similar option for Xbox Series X players too.

Marvel's Avengers

Update: Square Enix has confirmed that Marvel's Avengers will be a launch title on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and that a free upgrade to these versions will be available to players who buy either the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions. Players who do take advantage of this offer will also be able to move their save files as well. The upgrade only works within the same console family (PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, Xbox One to Xbox Series X). Additionally, just as PS5 players can play with PS4 players, Xbox Series X players will be able play with Xbox One players.

However, Crystal Dynamics has not yet confirmed the advantages the Xbox Series X version will have over the Xbox One. Instead, Square Enix says we will learn more about Xbox Series X, PC, and Stadia features at a later time.

Original Story (6/22/2020 at 5:38 p.m. CT):

Ahead of its War Table presentation scheduled for Wednesday, Crystal Dynamics has detailed how Marvel's Avengers will benefit from the upgrade from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5. In addition, the studio revealed that everyone who picks up a digital or physical PlayStation 4 copy will receive a PlayStation 5 upgrade at no additional cost.

Facebook Acquires Lone Echo Studio Ready at Dawn

3 years 10 months ago

Facebook announced today it has bought Lone Echo and The Order: 1886 developer Ready At Dawn as part of the Oculus Studios team.

Ready At Dawn had created three virtual reality games that were published by Oculus Studios since 2017—Lone Echo, Echo Arena, and Echo Combat—and is currently developing Lone Echo II.

“In addition to setting the bar for narrative VR experiences, Lone Echo re-wrote the playbook for VR movement mechanics with the debut of Ready At Dawn’s signature innovative continuous locomotion system and full-body IK (inverse kinematics),” said Facebook Head of AR/VR Content Mike Verdu in the announcement post. “The zero-g mechanic is used throughout the Echo Games franchise and lends itself well to VR beginners and competitive VR esports alike.”

Before working on virtual reality titles, Ready At Dawn developed games for the PlayStation platform, including Daxter, God of War: Chains of Olympus, and The Order: 1886.

The company said Ready At Dawn will retain its current offices in Irvine, California, and Portland, Oregon while gaining resources from both Facebook and Oculus Studios.

The studio will continue to develop Lone Echo II, and Facebook said it is not announcing future projects at this time. The company also said it is “exploring many ways to accelerate VR” when asked itself if it plans on acquiring more studios.

Kratos – God of War Series

video game dads

Our first video game dad is Kratos, god of emotional constipation. Though, we can’t really blame him for being bad at emotions. Kratos has gone through a long, violent, and painful journey to get to the tired old man he is now.

Even before having Atreus, Kratos absolutely loved his family. I mean, he went on an entire three game rampage of revenge for them. And, now that that particular chapter in his life is over, Kratos is doing his best with his new family.

Despite outwardly not showing it, Kratos loves Atreus to death and he would essentially tear apart the entire world if it meant keeping him safe.

Dying Light, Waylanders, Vampire Bloodlines 2 Devs Issue Statements Amid Chris Avellone Allegations

3 years 10 months ago

Chris Avellone, a game designer who came to prominence in the '90s following his work on Fallout 2, has been accused of sexual assault and harassment by multiple women, according to Gamasutra. Avellone has worked as a freelance writer after leaving developer Obsidian Entertainment in 2015, 12 years after he co-founded the studio with fellow ex-Black Isle Studio employees. Multiple studios he has recently worked with have now spoken out about his involvement with their projects.

Among the studios now addressing his work status is Paradox Interactive, which stated that none of Avellone's contributions to Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 will be included in the game, although it appears this does not stem from the allegations. According to a Paradox representative, Avellone's role in Vampire Bloodlines 2 was "brief" and whatever content he made for the game would not be used in any capacity. "Chris Avellone briefly worked with the Bloodlines 2 writing team early in the development of the game," Paradox said. "Through an iterative creative process, however, none of his contributions remain in the game that Hardsuit Labs is continuing to develop." Paradox didn't specifically comment on the allegations made against Avellone.
