The Netflix Cuphead cartoon can't come soon enough

3 years 10 months ago

At the end of this new (nearly) minute-long look at Netflix's Cuphead Show, the video's end says it's "coming soon." Hopefully this is one of those cases where "coming soon" means "coming soon" and not "releasing at an undetermined future date."

I am in love with Cuphead and I am also in love with the little bit of this show we've seen thus far. Today, we got a couple more peeks at finished animation alongside an introduction to a lot of the talent who's making it happen:

Best Nintendo Switch Deals: Dragon's Dogma, Jackbox, And More Weekend Discounts

3 years 10 months ago

We're still weeks away from the release of Paper Mario: The Origami King, so if you need a new Nintendo Switch game to fill the gap, there are a number of great deals this week on the Eshop. Capcom kicked off a new, albeit small, sale on some of its best games, and you can also save on a couple of great party games to play at home this weekend.

Capcom's underrated action-RPG Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen is on sale for 50% off at $15. The port arrived on Switch last year, so this is a great price for a lengthy, engrossing adventure. Another action-RPG, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, is also on sale for a stellar price ($20). Generations Ultimate offers a greatest hits of locales and monsters from series history prior to Monster Hunter World. It's a wonderful game that offers dozens upon dozens of hours of engaging content.

Okami HD, the high definition edition of Capcom's beloved 2006 action-adventure, is on sale for $10. You can also snag Mega Man 11, the latest game in the Blue Bomber's mainline series, for $15. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy is down to $15, too, if you're looking for a story-focused game. All of these Capcom games are on sale through July 2.

Dying Light - Hellraid DLC Release Date Set for July

3 years 10 months ago
Techland has announced the release date for the Hellraid DLC coming to Dying Light. The dark fantasy-themed content will now be released on July 23 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 for $9.99. Dying Light - Hellraid will also get a beta this weekend for anyone who pre-orders the DLC on Steam. Dying Light - Hellraid is a DLC expansion to Dying Light, Techland’s open-world zombie game. This is not a full-on standalone game, but rather DLC content the developers created while the originally announced Hellraid project is on hold. Techland is not working on the full Hellraid at this time. Instead the studio is developing Dying Light 2. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/26/dying-light-hellraid-release-date-trailer"] In the new release date trailer above, you can see players explore a dark fantasy world where instead of zombies, they fight demonic hellspawn while using medieval weapons. There will be both single-player and co-op options as well. The pre-order beta will be hosted this weekend from June 26 to June 29. Anyone who pre-orders the Hellraid DLC through Steam can gain access to the beta. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/08/26/dying-light-2-26-minutes-of-gameplay-with-developer-commentary"] Dying Light 2 was originally set to be released this spring but was delayed so the developers could make further improvements to the core game. Check out a 26-minute gameplay preview with developer commentary in the video above. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Matt Kim is a reporter for IGN.

Shakedown: Hawaii is getting a physical Wii and Wii U release in 2020

3 years 10 months ago

I admire the heck out of Vblank Entertainment's passion for porting games to outdated platforms.

We got an early heads-up about the developer's latest experiment thanks to an ESRB listing, but now it's official: Shakedown: Hawaii, a free-roaming overhead action game from 2019, is getting a physical Wii and Wii U release this year. This isn't a bit! Designer Brian Provinciano is going through with it.

In Europe, Shakedown: Hawaii is getting a 3,000-copy physical Wii launch on July 9, 2020, priced at $29.99. As he puts it, "the doors hadn't quite closed yet with Nintendo of Europe," so it was feasible.

Wii discs are region-locked, which is partially why a Wii U port of Shakedown: Hawaii – "the next best thing" – came to be. Provinciano says he "didn't want North American players to be left out."

Also, Wii U discs are just pleasant to hold. Love that rounded edge.

Here's the technical rundown on both versions:

Xbox Series X's Cheaper Lockhart Companion System Appears Again In Xbox Dev Notes

3 years 10 months ago

Evidence pointing towards a second next-generation Xbox continues to mount, this time with wording in the latest Game Development Kit SDK notes mentioning profiling modes for Xbox Lockhart.

Lockhart is a name that has been attributed to the other next-gen Xbox for some time now, stemming from the Anaconda and Lockhart project titles given to hardware under the banner of Project Scarlett. Anaconda would go on to be named the Xbox Series X, which Microsoft formally revealed in December last year. But since then the company has made no mention of a second SKU--at least not officially.

The latest GDK released to Xbox developers, as reported by The Verge, does make specific mention of Lockhart. It lays out a new profiling mode that will allow existing dev kits to mimic the performance conditions of the reportedly lower-powered consoles, including a slightly reduced CPU clock speed, less available RAM (about 7.5GB only), and significantly less GPU power (around four teraflops, as opposed to the 12 teraflops in the Xbox Series X). What that equates to is a testing profile that features the same SSD speeds and similar CPU performance but far less headroom for high resolution gaming.

If E3 2020 Was a Thing, These Game Reveals Would’ve Made It One to Remember

3 years 10 months ago

It’s currently June and thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ESA had to cancel E3 2020 earlier this year, which would have taken place this week in the Los Angeles Convention Center. We would have seen a Nintendo Direct full of adorable and charming game trailers, Sony might’ve put on a State of Play to reveal some PS5 goodies, and Microsoft could’ve finally shown us Halo Infinite gameplay.

And since gaming conferences are literally scattered about the summer months this year, reveals, and announcements just aren’t being done in the same fashion as they would have during E3 2020.

With all that being said, here are 9 incredible game reveals that would have made this E3 one to remember.

Oh Look, A New Game Is Coming To Wii And Wii U

3 years 10 months ago

Given the year is now 2020, you likely don't expect to see a lot of new games coming for Wii or Wii U, save for perhaps the obligatory ports of the latest entry in Ubisoft's Just Dance series. However, in news that will have you checking to make sure it's not April 1, a new, non-Just Dance game is on the way for the two Nintendo consoles that preceded the Switch, and it's releasing quite soon.

The game is Shakedown: Hawaii, a retro-style open-world action game in the vein of the early Grand Theft Auto entries. It originally released on a number of platforms last year--notably including PlayStation Vita--but is now coming to Wii and Wii U seemingly due to a random impulse on the part of the developer.

"Like most of my ports, Shakedown: Hawaii on Wii began one Friday night on a whim of curiosity," wrote developer Vblank. "Perhaps a jolt of Wii nostalgia rushed through me that evening, but I suddenly wondered... how long would it actually take to port? How would it feel to play with a Wii Remote? How would it look in 4:3? Would it hit 60 FPS right off the bat, or need optimization? I had many questions, but as soon as I held that Wii Remote and started playing, I knew I wanted to take it to the finish line."

Sea of Thieves is getting custom servers in the "near future"

3 years 10 months ago

Piratical multiplayer adventure Sea of Thieves will finally be introducing much-requested custom servers in the "near future", albeit initially only for a select number of creators and community groups while the feature remains in Alpha.

Custom servers that enable pirates to adventure away from the cutthroat PvP antics of other players have long been a popular request within portions of the Sea of Thieves community, and developer Rare has previously acknowledged it would explore the feature.

In their initial guise, however, custom servers will only be available to the aforementioned creators and community groups and in relatively limited form. The goal of this initial Alpha phase, explains Rare, is to provide select partners with a way to "use our sandbox to create unique experiences for their communities" and will offer swift access to custom servers, an ability to run custom events, and a way to invite community members to take part.

If you sit on this Cyberpunk 2077 chair backward, it'll kinda look like you're riding a Chocobo

3 years 10 months ago

Secretlab makes a good chair! Secretlab, now, also makes a very yellow chair.

I have nothing to say about this Cyberpunk 2077 chair that I didn't get out in the headline. Flip around on that bad boy and live out your wildest, ermmm, fantasy of riding a Final Fantasy Chocobo. When party time's over, pull a 180 and get back to gaming or blogging (which I am doing this very second in a Secretlab chair).

This isn't the first special edition Secretlab chair but it's definitely the most yellow. Other crossovers include Overwatch, Dota 2, Batman, Game of Thrones, Deadmau5, and a bunch of esports teams.

Riding high atop an imaginary version of a mighty avian steed will cost a pretty penny. The mid-size Omega model is $450 and the larger Titan model is $490. Not like it matters because they're all sold out anyway. Maybe you can get someone to record themselves riding the Cyberpunk chair like a Chocobo and then pay for their Braindance.

I’m Callin It Now & Want It on the Record: Skyrim 10th Anniversary Edition Is Coming to PS5 and Series X

3 years 10 months ago

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Bethesda’s baby that just keeps on giving. In 2016, it was revealed that Skyrim had sold over 30 million copies making it one of the best-selling games of all time. That announcement came prior to the Special Edition for PS4 and Xbox One, as well as its port to the Nintendo Switch, so it’s safe to assume that figure’s even bigger now four years later.

It’s not just obvious platforms that Skyrim has been ported to. Almost every conceivable electronic device you can possibly think of, minus your toaster has Skyrim in one form or another. There’s even a CYOA-style port on Amazon’s Echo. Skyrim ports have become so expected that it’s become prime meme material. If you’ve managed to avoid playing Skyrim up until today, almost nine years after its initial release, then kudos to you.

In its seemingly never-ending quest to have the largest portfolio of playable platforms, I sense the Dragonborn title and its overlord Bethesda already have their sights set on its next target. Yes, I’m calling it right now: Skyrim 10th Anniversary Edition will come to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2021.

Here's a closer look at Cyberpunk 2077's RTX tech

3 years 10 months ago

We already know that Cyberpunk 2077 will one of the biggest ray tracing games of 2020, but Nvidia have now given us a closer look at exactly what ray tracing effects RTX owners can expect to see when the game comes out later this year. It’s not entirely clear whether ray tracing will be available on day one when Cyberpunk 2077 launches on November 19th just yet, but whenever it eventually pitches up, it sure looks like it’s going to be pretty darn stunning.

Grab The Last Of Us 2 For $48.49 For A Limited Time

3 years 10 months ago

If you're not one of the 4 million PS4 owners who purchased The Last of Us Part 2 in the past week, you have a chance to join the party at a discount right now. Up until now, The Last of Us 2 has always sold at its full $60 price, and to be honest, it's surprising to see a PS4 exclusive like TLOU 2 discounted at all this soon after release. Rakuten has The Last of Us 2 for $48.49 with promo code GAL5, but you probably don't have very long to take advantage of this great offer.

To get the deal, you need to sign up for a free Rakuten membership, and then enter the promo code a checkout. Without a membership, you'll get The Last of Us 2 for $53.49, so you should obviously complete the quick registration process. The only downside to this deal is that the shipping window (July 1-10) is rather wide, but you do get free shipping.

Sea Of Thieves will get custom servers

3 years 10 months ago

Sea Of Thieves

is meant to be a dangerous sandbox full of threatening skeleton ships and dastardly fellow players nipping at your heels. It is that, and more, but as players do with sandboxes, many organise less lethal events on the high seas. In the past, pirate crews have hosted everything from fashion shows to ship races, but those events always exist with the threat of other interloping players. Now, Rare are planning to begin testing Custom Servers, private sessions to help facilitate special community-organised events.

Our highlights from the Steam Summer Sale

Steam’s Summer Sale

is well and truly underway. Running until July 9th, there are hundreds and thousands of great games on sale. Too many, if you ask us, but hey, everyone loves a good deal, right? To help you navigate this latest deluge of games going cheap, the RPS Treehouse has put their collective, socially distanced heads together to bring you our top Steam Summer Sale recommendations.

It’s by no means a comprehensive list – we’d be here until the end of time if we listed every good deal happening over the next two weeks – but hopefully it might jog your memory about that one game you’ve always been meaning to play but never got round to buying. To the deals!

Techland's Hellraid will finally see the light of day on July 23 as Dying Light DLC

3 years 10 months ago

Wait, what? Hellraid, an unreleased Techland game about slicing and dicing skeletons, is going to see the light of day in Dying Light, the studio's unstoppable, still-hanging-in-there zombie title from 2015.

Dying Light - Hellraid releases July 23, 2020, for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Folks who pre-order the DLC (it's $9.99) can try a weekend-long beta on Steam that's running from June 26 to June 29.

The maniacs actually did it!

After messing with a suspicious-as-hell arcade cabinet, players will have to survive a "demon-infested dungeon." During runs, you'll be able to accept bounties for "additional prizes" and "improve your Hellraid rank to access new weapons you can also wield outside of the infernal realm."

Hellraid is a separate mode with its own progression system – playable alone or in co-op – and it lets you kick the shit outta skeletons, so that's pretty fantastic. Officially, this DLC is "based on Techland's currently-on-hold first-person dark fantasy slasher." Maybe it has a bright future ahead of it?

For now, I'm just glad the original concept work on Hellraid didn't go to waste.

Watching Inception Through Fortnite Was Better Than I Expected

3 years 10 months ago

The first of Fortnite's Movie Nite events took place this morning, allowing players to watch a full-length Christopher Nolan movie from inside the game. For those in the United States, that movie is Inception, and I watched a significant chunk of it myself, only to find it was a far less strange experience than I had imagined.

The showing happens inside Fortnite Party Royale, a playlist introduced earlier this year that disables combat and throws players onto a smaller, custom island with a variety of activities that don't involve shooting each other. If you haven't jumped into this mode before, it's a bit confusing as to where you need to go, but look around and you'll quickly see spotlights in the distance calling attention to The Big Screen. As I approached and could see a corner of the screen from around a rock, I was worried the quality of the video would be low, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it was actually quite smooth, with no stutter or issues to report.

Microsoft to Permanently Close All But 4 Physical Stores

3 years 10 months ago
Microsoft has announced that it will be permanently closing all of its retail stores, while four physical locations in London, NYC, Sydney, and Redmond will be re-imagined as Microsoft Experience Centers. Microsoft announced the news and said that "the company’s retail team members will continue to serve customers from Microsoft corporate facilities and remotely providing sales, training, and support." Microsoft has told The Verge that no layoffs will result from today's decision. Microsoft closed its retail stores in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and had yet to re-open them. Since then, their focus has obviously shifted to its digital storefronts on Microsoft.com and the stores on both Xbox and Windows PC, which "reach more than 1.2 billion people every month in 190 markets." “We deliberately built teams with unique backgrounds and skills that could serve customers from anywhere. The evolution of our workforce ensured we could continue to serve customers of all sizes when they needed us most, working remotely these last months,” Microsoft Corporate Vice Pesident David Porter said in a statement. “Speaking over 120 languages, their diversity reflects the many communities we serve.
