Diablo 4: Open World Side Activities Detailed

3 years 9 months ago
Diablo 4's developers recently ran a two-day playtest, and have reported back on some of their findings. That includes the game's open world side activities, how its shared world shouldn't ever feel crowded, and more. In a lengthy report on the playtest, which took place in the game's Dry Steppes area (which we saw at the game's BlizzCon 2019 reveal), several of the game's new features were covered. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/11/02/diablo-4-hands-on-gameplay-impressions-blizzcon-2019"]

Open World Activities

While Diablo 4 still features a linear story campaign, its new open world allows for variety of side activities - the playtest revealed that those who didn't mainline the story campaign ended up playing for roughly twice as long as those who did. Side activities includ crafting, world events, PvP and side quests. The playtest's most popular activities, however, were Camps, clearable outposts dotted across the game world. Each camp has been overrun in a different way (one has been cursed and turned villagers into salt, another is haunted by a spirit possessing various bodies in a crypt) and, when cleared, will become populated with friendly NPCs and become a waypoint on the map. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=diablo-4-gameplay-reveal-images&captions=true"]

Shared World

While Diablo 4 will feature a shared world. Blizzard makes clear that it's fine-tuned the game so that it doesn't feel like a traditional MMO, instead making player encounters rare, with larger groups only appearing where they'd be contextually expected to. Dungeons and key story moments are always private to the playing party. Towns will feature a few other players, and the open road will be dotted with them too.

Diablo 4 Update Details Its Open-World Multiplayer Areas

3 years 9 months ago

Diablo 4 is still coming in the nebulous Blizzard future, with no precise release date, but in the meantime the studio is keeping us posted on its progress with promised quarterly updates. The latest development update gives fresh insights on how the dungeon-crawler will handle elements like storytelling, open-world elements, and seamless multiplayer without compromising the feel of Diablo. Here's all of the new info we learned about Diablo 4.

Diablo 4 Storytelling

Blizzard started by addressing how it is changing its storytelling mechanisms. Whereas Diablo 3 used character portraits to deliver dialogue, the studio is experimenting with bringing the camera in closer to characters so you can see the conversations firsthand. Some conversations will rely on a general library of animations, while more complex conversations will have handcrafted animations.

For the most important story moments, Blizzard is planning to use real-time cutscenes. That allows the angles to be more cinematic, but you'll still be shown as your own character with any visual elements like your currently equipped armor.

The Cyberpunk 2077 Pubic Hair Customization Options You Didn’t Know You Needed

3 years 9 months ago

If you've seen the latest Cyberpunk 2077 trailer and caught up with the new gameplay shown off during today's Night City Wire stream, you probably understand how detailed developer CD Projekt RED is making its latest RPG. But did you expect character creation to be so detailed that it includes various pubic hair options?

Cyberpunk 2077 character creator has been previewed briefly before, but the first hands-on chance for media has uncovered just how deep it really is. New The Legend of Heroes: Hajimari no Kiseki Screenshots Show Magical Girl 3D Shooter Minigame

3 years 9 months ago

Today Nihon Falcom released new screenshots from its upcoming JRPG The Legend of Heroes: Hajimari no Kiseki, which is the newest game of the Trails series.

The new images once again revisit the New Reverie Corridor, which (as we saw in our previous article) is an extradimensional space in the game that can be unlocked by progressing the main story. There are no restrictions on when you can play it. Once you unlocked it, you can switch between the Corridor and the main story whenever you like.

Before you get worried about spoilers, the episodes and minigames you can unlock here are unrelated to the story of the game, and some of them are pretty wacky, as you can probably see in today’s screenshots.

The episodes are unlocked by dropping Seal Stones, and they feature party combinations that usually wouldn’t be possible in the main story. Basically, it’s a lot of fanservice.

First of all, we get to see the minigame Magical Girl Alisa RS, which is an actual 3D shooter with majokko themes.

On top of that, we also get to see a couple of character-specific episodes showing some familiar faces.

You can check out the screenshots below.

See EDF: World Brothers' Blocky Bugs In Action

3 years 9 months ago

Click here to watch embedded media

A few days ago, D3 Publisher revealed that two new entries in the Earth Defense Force series were on the way. One of them, World Brothers, features a striking visual departure from past entries in the series, with blocky heroes battling equally blocky bugs. Screenshots alone don't do it justice. Fortunately, we've got a trailer showing the game in all its voxel glory.

In addition to fighting the usual ants, spiders, and other pests that fans are accustomed to, players will have another potential hazard to contend with: the edge of the world. It looks like this planet's cube-shaped surface means that it's quite possible to walk right off the edge and into oblivion. Fortunately, at least some members of the EDF have jetpacks.

Stick around for the end, and you'll get a quick (and do we mean quick) look at Earth Defense Force 6, a more traditional entry in the franchise that was also announced along with World Brothers. That title is due this year, and EDF 6 is coming in 2021. No word yet as to whether they'll be heading over to our shores.

Rooster Teeth Cancels In-Person RTX Austin 2020 Event

Amid growing concerns of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and a recent surge in cases in Texas, entertainment conglomerate Rooster Teeth has canceled the in-person RTX Austin 2020 event that was scheduled to take place in September.

"Despite all our wishes and best efforts to bring us together in person this year, due to citywide restrictions on large scale events, RTX Austin 2020 has officially been canceled," Rooster Teeth said. "We wish nothing more than to be able to see all of you in person as soon as it’s safe to do so."

Though RTX Austin 2020 has been canceled, Rooster said it will host a virtual event instead. Details about this RTX replacement have yet to be revealed, but it's planned to take place later this year.

Overlook Trail is my kinda surreal adventure game

3 years 9 months ago

We like weird games, and Overlook Trail, a "surrealistic dream exploration" adventure, fits the bill.

I can't remember the last time I strolled through someone's giant throat, over their squishy tongue, past their teeth, and dove out their mouth into a bowl of cereal. There's truly a first time for everything.

"Conceptually it is much like a collection of short stories or films, each with its unique style and game mechanic," according to Malmö-based developer Longhand Electric. Prior videos illustrate that point.

I'm a little late to finding out about Overlook Trail – it resurfaced on Monday as part of the Summer Game Fest showcase stream – but I'm happy to highlight it. There are too many games to follow.

This one's coming to PC and consoles on a not-yet-pinned-down date.

Her Story and Telling Lies dev Sam Barlow teases "ambitious" new game

3 years 9 months ago

Sam Barlow, the developer behind acclaimed FMV narrative mysteries Her Story and Telling Lies, has begun to tease his next title - the enigmatic Project Ambrosio.

Barlow unveiled his latest effort in a tweet yesterday - marking the fifth anniversary of Her Story - alongside a link to the game's newly unveiled, and not entirely revelatory, Steam page.

Head over to Valve's store and you'll be confronted with a heavily redacted description of the game, presented as some kind of timeline, a disparate collection of enigmatic images and video clips, and not a lot more. A smattering of words do remain uncensored, however, with the most revealing appearing to be "gothic", "NYC", and "pop star".

Here Are Some Wholesome & Funny Twitch Raids to Brighten Your Day

3 years 9 months ago

I like to think that lots of people have a similar love/hate relationship with Twitch to the one that I do. Twitch can be a fun place to watch fellow gamers play stuff you’re interested in, but like any popular website it can be filled with obnoxious personalities and toxic people.

While not every streamer on this list may be your cup of tea, it’s hard to hate too much on someone who uses their massive Twitch presence to brighten someone’s day or perhaps even change their life.

Let’s start this list out with perhaps one of the most well known streamers out there, Ninja.

Ninja Raids a Super Positive Guy

via YouTuber: Fortnite Syndrome

One day, Ninja decided to raid a small streamer by the name of Shootin_Lefty. And what Ninja may or may not have realized is that Shootin_Lefty was someone who could really use the support.

His sister recently passed away and his father was getting a kidney removed. Rough stuff.

New Square Enix Pride Mascot Unveiled; Designed by Legendary Artist, Toshiyuki Itahana

3 years 9 months ago

Every year the LGBTQ+ community celebrates everything queer during the month of June and Square Enix has decided to join in on the festivities and show its support of Pride Month by unveiling the company’s new Pride mascot.

Published on a blog post on Square Enix’s official website, the charming new, rainbow-colored character doesn’t seem to have a name but it was designed by legendary Final Fantasy artist, Toshiyuki Itahana, who has lent his artistry talents to games such as Final Fantasy IX, the Crystal Chronicles series, and the Chocobo spin-off series.

And according to Itahana, the mascot represents much more than just a colorful piece of artwork:

“The character represents diversity and freedom, with its multitude of colours being the diversity aspect and the trainers and wings that allow it to travel anywhere symbolizing freedom. I designed this character hoping that the world can become even more free and diverse in the future.”

You can see the entire image of the new Pride mascot down below in a tweet from Square Enix.

Biomutant Shows Off Fast Combat, Massive Monsters, And A Large World In New Gameplay

3 years 9 months ago

Biomutant, the third-person action game initially revealed in 2017, hasn't been show much recently, with out last real look at the game dating back to Gamescom 2018. But in an extended gameplay trailer for the game, its initial charm hasn't faded, and we get a look at its vibrant open world.

There's a lot going on in the nine-minute trailer below. You get to see the game's action again, spread across various weapons. Combat is centered on switching up between ranged gunplay and close-quarters melee action, with quick dashes and slow-motion dodges making it look very fast and exciting.

Biomutant is home to numerous monstrous foes you'll need to fight, spread out in a world that looks as large as it is colorful. In one highlight you see the player-character scampering up a mountain before leaping off and using a back-mounted glider to soar across the map. It's reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in a way, but it's unclear yet how large this space really is.

Here's how Fallout 76's Season 1 works, including details on an Ammo Converter

3 years 9 months ago

It has taken Bethesda a long time to get here, but Fallout 76 finally has a battle pass. That's the de facto for games-as-a-service types these days, and it took Bethesda about a year and a half to implement one. The first Fallout 76 battle pass is simply called "Season 1" and launches on June 30 as part of Update 20.

Ahead of Season 1, Bethesda detailed exactly how this will all work. It's a 100-rank progression system that plays out on a digital game board called "The Legendary Run." Every new rank comes with some sort of reward like cosmetics and consumables.

Achieving new ranks is filtered through Fallout 76's challenges system. Completing daily and weekly challenges nets you S.C.O.R.E. (whatever that acronym means). Enough S.C.O.R.E. and you'll go up in rank. It's not complicated, but it doesn't need to be. Bethesda mentions that it's revamping challenges so that they're more attainable. There are additional ways to earn S.C.O.R.E. like simply earning XP and completing public events.

As for rewards, Bethesda lists: cosmetic items, in-game currency, Perk Card packs, Atoms, Repair Kits, Lunchboxes (which give a 25 percent XP boost), Vault-Tec Supply Packages (bundles of crafting materials), and Fireworks (which apparently just look pretty).

However, Rank 5 of the Season 1 board comes with an essential tool that will make life in the Appalachian Wasteland a lot less frustrating. There's an Ammo Converter that turns unwanted ammunition into bullets that you actually want to use. Through the Ammo Converter terminal, you simply select a quantity of the ammo you want to get rid of. That credits you with AmmoPoints which can then be spent materializing whatever ammo you need.

No, apparently, it launched on July 7th, 2015. With the birthday approaching, developers Psyonix have announced plans for a big ol’ Fifth Anniversary event starting next week.
