Well, it sounds like P.T. is safe for another PlayStation generation

3 years 6 months ago

This week, Sony published a support page answering some of the outstanding questions we had about the PlayStation 5 and backwards compatibility. In there is a line I skimmed over upon first reading, but now I've gone back and had a thorough rummage, I've come to a realisation: P.T. is safe for another generation.

The line in question confirms you can indeed transfer digital games and saved data from a PlayStation 4 to a PS5 via WiFi. You can also access PS4 games on a PS5 directly from a PS5 extended storage drive.

I assumed this would be the case, but it was still great to see it in writing. And it got me thinking: it means I can transfer P.T., the "playable teaser" Hideo Kojima and co concocted for the cancelled Silent Hills project, from my base PS4, where it has sat under lock and key ever since it was delisted from the PlayStation Store, to a PS5 when I end up getting one. And given P.T. is not on Sony's list of 10 PS4 games that won't work on PS5, I assume I'll be able to play it on the next-gen console, too.

Razer Sells Sneki Snek Plush To Help Save Trees

3 years 6 months ago

Razer had plenty of new products to announce during its RazerCon 2020 virtual press conference, including a new PC gaming case, new headphones, and a new microphone, but the company also revealed something a bit unexpected: a plush toy. The Sneki Snek plush is based on Razer's cartoon mascot, and you'll be helping to save trees if you buy one.

Razer partnered with Conservation International when creating the Sneki Snek plush, and it is donating funds to save 10 trees for every plush sold. Its goal is to save 100,000 trees through the campaign, which would mean selling 10,000 Sneki Snek plushes. They're available to purchase now for $30, and as of this writing, Razer has already sold enough to save over 6,000.

Trees are being saved in a variety of countries around the world, including Colombia, Peru, Brazil, the Philippines, Fiji, Madagascar, and China. The package the plush comes in is also biodegradable, and you will get a temporary tattoo patch with the SNEKISURPRISE code when you check out.

Amazon Cancels Multiplayer Shooter Crucible After Rocky Launch

3 years 6 months ago

Amazon has canceled its free-to-play multiplayer shooter Crucible with servers being shut down next month, developer Relentless Studios announced.

The third-person shooter originally launched last May for PC on Steam, and was reverted back to closed beta status on June 30 following middling reviews and low player counts.

“We very much appreciate the way that our fans have rallied around our efforts, and we’ve loved seeing your responses to the changes we’ve made over the last few months, but ultimately we didn’t see a healthy, sustainable future ahead of Crucible,” the announcement read.

The developer will be offering full refunds for any purchases made and a final playtest and community celebration “in the next few weeks” before shutting down the servers on Nov. 9.

Crucible was the first major original game to be published by Amazon Game Studios after developing mobile games since its inception in 2012. It was a mix of MOBAs like Dota 2 and League of Legends with battle royale elements and a class system like Overwatch between its various game modes.

The developer said it will be transitioning to Amazon Game Studio’s upcoming MMO New World and “other upcoming projects” after the servers are shut down.

Puyo Bock holds the secret to naming Star Wars: Squadrons pilots

3 years 6 months ago

Star Wars: Squadrons screenshot.

I’ve never understood Star Wars names. On one hand, you’ve got perfectly normal blokes with names like Luke or Ben, and then someone will stroll on up and deadpan introduce themselves as “Dash Rendar” or “Wedge Antilles”. It’s enough to have you wondering where they come up with these names. In the case of one Star Wars: Squadrons pilot, at least, there’s a good chance the name came from the mind of a comedy writer’s 20-month-old kid.

Here are some strong contenders for Pokemon Sword and Shield: The Crown Tundra

3 years 6 months ago

On previous lists looking on the Pokémon meta, we've seen both brand new Pokémon set the tier list aflame as well as witness old favorites continue holding down the fort. Now it's time to see what has changed since the base game launched with how the Isles of Armor brought back classic Pokémon, gave current dex Pokémon new tools, and determine how some returning legendaries may fare when the Crown Tundra releases.

Some that were on previous versions of the list, like Gyarados, are still dangerous owing to the strength and longevity of their sets. Others, like Durant, will experience a dip in usage as old rivals like Scizor return, better than ever with new moves like Dual Wingbeat for Scizor specifically.

Star Citizen & Squadron 42 Developers Share a Lot of Details About Future Plans, Development, & More

3 years 6 months ago

Cloud Imperium Games hosted an AMA on its official forums to celebrate the anniversary of the beginning of the Star Citizen project.

Founder and CEO Chris Roberts, live director Todd Papy, and persistent universe game director Tony Zurovec answered a variety of questions about the present and future of the growing game and its single-player campaign Squadron 42, which just received an update to alpha 3.11.

Below you can check out what they shared.

Chris Roberts

About he way and pace of new information reveals on Squadron 42’s development.

“Tomorrow we’ll be launching the inaugural episode of the “The Briefing Room” a show focused just on Squadron 42, which we are planning to do every quarter (3 months) until Squadron 42 releases, where we will address some of this.

We haven’t been happy with how effectively we’ve been showing progress on Squadron 42, as we felt the previous format didn’t do a good job of all in communicating just how much work is going on. The new roadmap format which we’ve been working towards and on since we announced we would be changing it up will do a much better job in show what people are working on at any given time as opposed to just focusing on deliverable features. I briefly discussed our thinking here.

Squadron 42 is a tricky project to communicate on as we really don’t want to give the experience and story away which can make updating on certain content or features challenging.

The creator of the original PlayStation console is back to make new machines, though they probably aren't what you'd expect. Ken Kutaragi has moved from video games to robots, and he aims to help human workers with factory jobs.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Kutaragi explained that as CEO of Ascent Robotics, a company founded in 2016, he is not receiving a salary and wants to solve problems caused by the pandemic.

"The COVID-19 outbreak has turned the old argument about robots taking our jobs on its head," he said. "It's pretty clear now that if we want to arrive at a new normal, we need more and more robots in our daily lives."

Xbox Series X can finally run Assassin's Creed Unity at 60fps

3 years 6 months ago

Some might say it was a game that was simply too ambitious for its intended platform. In 2014, Ubisoft's spectacular Assassin's Creed Unity pushed back technological boundaries in a range of directions. Its depiction of Revolutionary Paris was dense in detail, packed with hundreds of residents on-screen at any given point, in a city that didn't just increase detail outdoors - but introduced highly detailed interiors too. Combined with big advances in character rendering and an astonishing global illumination system that still looks incredible today, Unity had all the makings of a masterpiece. The problem was, it didn't run very well at all.

Ubisoft itself admitted that the focus on technology was just too strong, to the detriment of the final product, which ran poorly on both PS4 and Xbox One. Even on PC, it took years for CPUs and GPUs to run this game well. Curiously, with the console builds, Unity actually ran better in some cases on the less powerful Microsoft machine, despite a locked 900p resolution on both - indicative of the extraordinary CPU load placed on the consoles and the small clock speed advantage enjoyed by Xbox One. Patches followed, the game improved, but it took the arrival of PS4 Pro and Xbox One X with their higher frequency CPUs to get the game running at anything close to a locked 30 frames per second.

Apple Forbidden From Blocking Unreal Engine On iOS/Mac For Duration Of Trial

3 years 6 months ago

The Epic Games vs. Apple trial isn't set to begin until next year, and in the meantime, there was concern that Apple would disable Unreal Engine support on its devices. This would leave a huge number of developers without the ability to maintain or develop games on iOS and Mac, but a judge has stepped in. A previously temporary restraining order that barred Apple from doing this has been made permanent in the lead up to the trial.

In an order filed on October 9, United States District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers said that all parties "in active concert or participation with Apple" are forbidden from taking action against "Epic Affiliates" in regard to Apple's developer program, on the basis of Epic Games using direct payment methods to circumvent Apple's own payment system.

"This preliminary injunction supersedes the prior temporary restraining order," the order continued, adding that it will remain in effect for the duration of the litigation.
