Off The Golden Path – Progression And Exploration In Halo Infinite

2 years 6 months ago

Halo Infinite’s campaign offers two distinct paths for players; it’s one of the biggest things setting the game apart from its predecessors. As I checked out a three-hour demo of the campaign, it was apparent that Master Chief’s newest adventure affords the option of a familiar action-packed “golden path.” Like nearly all previous Halo games, Infinite’s mostly linear main story playthrough aims to offer a satisfying and tightly paced adventure, a defined and engaging narrative, and clear objective markers that carry you to the subsequent big setpiece encounter. Based on the extensive demo I experienced, players looking for that classic Halo campaign structure won’t be disappointed.

However, the alternative path through the game sets Halo Infinite apart from what has come before. After an introductory sequence that establishes the gameplay and stakes of the story, Infinite opens up and allows for far more freeform exploration and progression than earlier games in the franchise. There’s a whole loop of character improvement, discoverable pick-ups, armor upgrades, and optional battles awaiting players who choose to stray from the main path. While the developers at 343 Industries continue to resist the term “open world” to describe the experience, there’s no doubt that what I witnessed borrows liberally from open-world trends in action and shooting games of the last decade. The difference, of course, is that those open areas are filled with the type of tense Halo gunplay and action the series has always been known for, and that makes all the difference.

Halo Infinite: First Campaign Hands-On Preview

2 years 6 months ago

The biggest surprise I had coming out of my few hours of Halo Infinite campaign hands-on wasn't the delightful exploration, nor the incredibly fun gunplay paired with Infinite's new equipment. Instead, it came down to the characters. Halo Infinite sees the legendary Master Chief once again tasked with saving the universe from yet another threat, and after five major campaigns, the Chief seems tired. Sad, even. He’s a man of few words, but his movements in cutscenes and response to those who need him are heavier than I’ve seen before. This is Chief without Cortana. His subtle yet distinct change is far from a bad thing, though. If anything, Master Chief's forlorn demeanor that he sets aside to get the job done is a great indication to me that Halo Infinite’s story is intended to be a more impactful adventure.

Chief’s stern determination is also wonderfully contrasted to his new AI companion's bubbly enthusiasm and his pilot rescuer's anxiety and weariness. Given 343’s failure to give Locke the faintest hint of a personality or motive and Halo 5: Guardians' generally lackluster story, this was a relief. Halo Infinite’s contrasting characters aren't the only things to look forward to, though. Rewarding exploration infused with Halo's DNA and genuinely challenging combat could be a relief in today’s open-world game extravaganza. Many are packed to the brim with chores and only a few offer meaningful adventures beyond their main path. If things continue the way I played in my four-hour hands-on time, I think Halo Infinite could fall into the latter.

We Finally Get a First Look at Spider-Man in Marvel's Avengers

2 years 6 months ago

IGN can exclusively reveal the introductory trailer for Spider-Man in Marvel's Avengers, which shows off Crystal Dynamics' take on Peter Parker for the first time.

The trailer is a cinematic rather than straight gameplay, but gives us an idea of Spider-Man's acrobatic moveset, web shooting abilities, and all but confirms web-swinging and wall-crawling across the game's environments:

The cinematic sees Peter ambushing and taking on a group of A.I.M. soldiers that have taken hostages, before being joined by the entire Avengers line-up. Square Enix hasn't yet confirmed who is providing the voice of Peter Parker in this incarnation of the character.

Arriving as part of the With Great Power expansion for PlayStation owners of the game – due for release on November 30 – Spider-Man will be the 9th playable hero in the multiplayer game. The
expansion sees Peter Parker discover A.I.M. plans to make its robot army invincible, before joining forces with the Avengers.

Spider-Man was announced as a PlayStation-exclusive character before release, but it's been a very long wait for the character to be added, with Crystal Dynamics repeatedly reconfirming that he would arrive.

Activision Apologises and Removes 'Insensitive' Quran Pages from Call of Duty: Vanguard

2 years 6 months ago

Activision Blizzard is currently facing serious ongoing allegations of harassment and mistreatment of marginalized workers. To learn more, please visit our timeline as well as our in-depth report on the subject.

Activision has issued an apology after 'insensitive' uses of the Muslim holy text, the Quran, were included on the floor of a Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies map. The images have now been removed from the game.

Following the launch of Call of Duty: Vanguard, a number of players noticed that the game contained various pages from the Quran scattered across the floor of a Zombies map. The pages of the holy text were positioned in a way that allowed players to step on them while engaging in gunfights. Putting a copy of the Quran on the floor is considered a disrespectful act, and the scattered pages caused an outcry, with some even calling for a boycott of the game.

Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Available Today On Switch

2 years 6 months ago

A Switch port of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was announced during the Nintendo Direct that aired back in September, and finally, after a little over a month of waiting, it’s available for purchase.

KOTOR was first released on the original Xbox and PC in 2003, and it was later ported to Mac, iOS, and Android devices by Aspyr Media, the studio now heading the PlayStation 5 and PC remake of the classic RPG. Due to Xbox’s overall backward compatibility support, the original version of KOTOR has been playable on Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S consoles. As of today, it’s playable on Switch.

Rainbow Six Extraction Gets a Release Date and a Lower Price

2 years 6 months ago

After several delays, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction will arrive on January 20, 2022, and the price of the standard edition has been lowered to $39.99 USD.

Ubisoft announced that the PvE shooter spin-off from Rainbow Six Siege will arrive with full cross-play, cross-save, and cross-progression. It will also introduce a cross-play Buddy Pass – every copy of the game comes with two passes to invite other players to play free for 14 days. Any progression made during that time will be transferred to full game if triallists decide to buy the full game.

Alongside the price reduction for the standard edition, the Deluxe edition will now come in at $49.99, and adds three bonus packs. All pre-orders will come with the Orbital Decay Bundle, two costumes and a weapon skin, while players who have played Siege will receive a United Front Bundle, including gearsets that unlock in both Siege and Extraction, and unlocking Extraction's operators within Siege.

Extraction takes Rainbow Six Siege as a basis, but transforms the competitive shooter in a cooperative one, asking swauds of players to fight off a parasitic alien threat. The game has suffered multiple delays, not to mention a change of name from its original title, Quarantine.

How the Creator of FarmVille is Bringing its Mobile Empire to Console Gaming

2 years 6 months ago

When you think of FarmVille, you might have vague, fuzzy memories of an old game you used to play on your Facebook browser back in the day — or maybe you only remember your various family members trying to get you to help them with their farms.

But while the original game might be a fuzzy memory for those who don't game on their phones, its creator, Zynga, has only grown more relevant and powerful since. Not only has it just released FarmVille 3, but it's seen massive success on mobile over the years with games like Words With Friends, CSR Racing, and various other titles. It's made numerous acquisitions in recent years too, picking up developers NaturalMotion, Echtra, StarLark, ad monetization platform Chartboost, and now, IGN can reveal, three Turkey-based hypercasual studios: ByteTyper, Creasaur Entertainment, and Zerosum, which were acquired by Zynga subsidiary Rollic.

And now, Zynga's preparing to take a step out of its mobile empire and venture forth into console gaming.

Its first outpost will be Star Wars: Hunters, a real time arena battler coming to iOS, Android, and Switch early next year sometime. It's a big move for a studio that, for over 14 years, has made a powerful name for itself firmly in the realms of mobile and browser free-to-play games. And to do it, Zynga is putting resources and trust into its acquisitions, such as Hunters developer NaturalMotion and Torchlight developer Echtra, to make it happen.

Nintendo Switch Black Friday deals 2021 including consoles, games and accessories

2 years 6 months ago

Black Friday 2021 is just around the corner and Nintendo Switch deals are already starting to appear across online retailers, including some great Switch bundle options at Amazon.

Last year, it was the supermarkets that had the best Nintendo Switch Black Friday deals. They had Switch consoles going for as cheap as £230 over the sales event - some of the lowest prices we've ever seen! Stock was quite limited though, so you'd have been lucky to grab one. What does that mean for 2021, though?

Rockstar Had To 'Remove A Couple' Of Cheats From Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition Due To Technical Reasons

2 years 6 months ago

Expect a handful of cheats to be missing from Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.

The GTA franchise is known for a lot of things, including cheats. These allow players to customize the experience in a given GTA game to their liking. Maybe they have too much police heat on them? A cheat can fix that. Maybe they need a rocket launcher immediately? A cheat can get them that. Really, for a lot of wants and needs in GTA, there’s an accompanying cheat.

However, some of the cheats previously seen in GTA III, GTA: San Andreas, and GTA: Vice City have been cut, according to Rockstar, although the company opted to stay mum on the topic when asked about which ones by USA Today, as reported by Eurogamer

“We actually had to remove a couple for technical reasons, certain things that didn’t play well in the Unreal base,” Rockstar Games producer Rich Rosado told USA Today. “But that’s actually where I’ll leave it. There’s some fun with discovery. I’m not saying plus or minus, but I’d rather not just go right on the nose before the release and go straight to the end credits.”

Redditor Makes Jaw-Dropping Shining Gyarados Pokemon Card Animation

2 years 6 months ago

The Pokemon Trading Card market has returned with a vengeance recently, as collectors are going bonkers trying to get their hands on the rarest cards around. But while there is plenty of amazing full art, tag-team, and VMax rarity cards around that are stunning to look at, there are few Pokemon cards that are as cool as what one Redditor has been creating in their spare time.

As you can see in the post below to the Pokemon subreddit, user XoXcHriisXoX made an absolutely gorgeous animated version of their Shining Gyarados card, featuring an ocean background, lightning, and rain to really help set the mood.

What is more impressive is that this isn’t even the first Pokemon Trading Card animation of this style that XoXcHriisXoX has made. One look at their post history shows that they’ve been cranking out these cool animations for a few months now, creating versions for Espeon, Charizard, and Mew just to name a few.

How RockLove's CEO Uses Old-World Jewelry Techniques for Star Wars, Marvel Collabs

2 years 6 months ago

Allison Cimino of RockLove Jewelry didn’t intend to become a jewelry designer – let alone one who collaborates with some of the most popular franchises in entertainment and games like Star Wars, Marvel, Disney, and The Elder Scrolls. However, it became a natural fit after she studied abroad in an apprenticeship in Florence, Italy.

“Licensing was not even a glimmer of an idea,” Cimino said. “I thought that boutique jewelry was kind of the way to go and what everybody was doing.”

After working with artists and authors, it was a collaboration Cimino did with Clive Barker, the creator of Hellraiser, that gained the attention of Star Trek. CBS then inquired if RockLove wanted to make a Star Trek collection in 2014, which came with other properties that Cimino was able to create collections for as well.

“That was why I ended up in this niche of historical jewelry with things like Vikings on History channel, Penny Dreadful, and Twin Peaks. It was very much anything that was in history, fantasy, or sci-fi. Then also, the collaborations with the video games, which again was all these awesome relics that could be articulated,” Cimino said.

GTA Trilogy Has Removed Some Cheats for 'Technical Reasons'

2 years 6 months ago

As Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy launches, Rockstar has confirmed that it has removed some cheats from the game due to technical reasons, although it's not yet clear which ones.

During the lead-up to the launch of GTA: The Trilogy, social media has been abuzz with fans discussing and sharing their favourite cheat codes from across the original games. However, for its remasters, Rockstar told USA Today that some of those cheats haven't been brought over to the latest release due to technical reasons.

“We actually had to remove a couple for technical reasons, certain things that didn’t play well in the Unreal base,” producer Rich Rosado explained. “But that’s actually where I’ll leave it. There’s some fun with discovery. I’m not saying plus or minus, but I’d rather not just go right on the nose before the release of the game and go straight to the end credits.”

Despite confirming that some of the game's cheats had been removed between iterations, Rosaldo alludes to the possibility that the game may include a number of new cheats for players to discover. While cheats certainly add a new layer of chaos and fun to the mix across the GTA series, it should be noted that (according to GameRant) using them may lock players out of a number of trophies and achievements.

Far Cry 6 Vaas: Insanity DLC Gets a Release Date

2 years 6 months ago

Ubisoft has announced that Vaas: Insanity, the first of Far Cry 6's roguelike premium expansions will arrive on Tuesday, November 16.

According to a press release the DLC – which sees actor Michael Mando return to play the iconic villain role – will be available for players to download on November 16 and can be purchased as part of the game's Season Pass.

Unlike Far Cry 6's main story, Vaas: Insanity will lean into the roguelike genre through its "die and retry" gameplay when it releases later this month. "Starting with nothing more than a pistol to defend themselves," the studio explains, "players will need to find new weapons and unlock power-ups to become stronger and progress deeper into the depths of Vaas’ psyche."

Ubisoft says that fans will get a "unique opportunity to better understand Vaas' past, personal demons, and motivations," through a blend of "intense action and storytelling."

While Vaas: Insanity is due out on November 16, it will act as the first of three episodic adventures - with each focusing on a different Far Cry villain. As previously reported by IGN last month, the two remaining adventures will centre around Far Cry 4's Pagan Min and Far Cry 5's Joseph Seed when they launch in January and March 2022 respectively.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition | New Gameplay Today Live

2 years 6 months ago

Few games shook the industry or even pop culture like Grand Theft Auto III did in 2001. Coming from seemingly nowhere, it quickly grew from cult hit to mainstream sensation. Sure, the GTA series on PlayStation had a reputation for being a vulgar and violent yet captivating sandbox, but the shift to a full 3D Liberty City in GTA3 shattered our perception of immersion possible at the time. Subsequent releases of Vice City and San Andreas built on the mold set by Rockstar, with bigger locations, more vehicles, weapons, activities, and debauchery. As the generations passed and GTA evolved into what we know it to be today with Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online, the original 3D trilogy became more of a fond memory, left to stay in the past than to be played in their original forms. That is, until today.
