Come with us now on a journey to our childhoods, as we on the Electronic Wireless Show podcast talk about the games that make us feel the most nostalgic. The games we played as kids, or spent all-nighters on as teens. It's a surprisingly diverse list, and Matthew has one anecdote in particular involving the music of Danny Elfman that I think makes this a genuine must-listen episode. Do you have the same nostalgia games? Which ones instantly transport you to the past?

The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me Reveals Story in New Trailer

1 year 10 months ago

While just this year we did get The Quarry, Supermassive Games isn’t done yet. The Devil in Me serves as the season one finale to The Dark Pictures Anthology after three other games. The Dark Pictures Anthology games have done, spooky ship, spooky boat, and spooky cave. Now it’s time to venture into spooky hotel.

This time around a documentary crew receive a call from a mysterious and reclusive rich guy to invite them to a replica of hotel H.H. Holmes built and supposedly used to kill his victims. Everything seems to be going well until the hotel is revealed to be a series of traps, isolating the documentary crew and subjecting them to what seems to be Saw-like contraptions.

You can see the trailer for yourself below:

For the first time, it seems the Dark Pictures Anthology will be dipping into a level of reality. H.H. Holmes was an actual serial killer in the early 1890’s in Chicago, and did construct a building that the papers referred to as the “Murder Castle.”

E3 2023 Dates Announced, PAX Organizer to Help Produce Show

1 year 10 months ago

The ESA has announced today that E3 will return in the second week of June 2023, and will partner with PAX organizer, ReedPop, to produce the show.

The news comes following three years of an in-person version of E3 having not taken place. Instead, in past years, developers and publishers have ran their own livestreams to showcase announcements of upcoming games, and industry veteran Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest has also helped fill the early June void left by the tradeshow.

Commenting on E3’s return in 2023, President of ReedPop Lance Fensterman said, “It is a tremendous honor and privilege to ReedPop to take on the responsibility of bringing E3 back in 2023.”

“With the support and endorsement of the ESA, we’re going to build a world class event to serve the global gaming industry in new and broader ways than we already do at ReedPop through our portfolio of world leading events and websites.”

ReedPop is the organizer of PAX, New York Comic Con and Star Wars Celebration, and will lead the in-person return of E3 2023.

It was also announced that a secure and streamlined media registration process will open later this year, which in the past has led to data leaks of attendees’ private and confidential information.

When Is E3 2023?

Currently, the ESA and ReedPop have announced that E3 will take place in “the second week of June 2023.” This means it is likely the first showcases from publishers will take place on the weekend of the June 10-11, with the show floor being open from Monday June 12, through until Wednesday June 14, as the show traditionally runs for three days.

Concrete dates for showcases haven’t been confirmed at the time of writing, though.

1 year 10 months ago

Roguelikes are one of the most popular and in-demand style of games in the industry over the past few years, with titles like Hades and Dead Cells setting the bar high when it comes to quality gameplay and replayability. As such, any new game that tries to break into the genre really needs to try and do something interesting to succeed; that is exactly what the team over at Magic Design Studios is hoping to accomplish with Have a Nice Death.

Released into early access on Mar. 8, 2022, Have a Nice Death is a 2D Action Roguelike where you play as Death, CEO of Death Incorporated, who currently finds himself teetering on the edge of burnout. In order to restore order, you must take control of the Grim Reaper and help him show his employees who is boss using none other than his trusty scythe.

Since its release, Magic Design Studios has been hard at work adding new updates for the game, tweaking quality of life stuff, and adding in items here and there to improve the game step by step. Today, Have a Nice Death looks to take an even bigger leap forward, as it releases its Fast Food update.

Bowser Is Now a Massive 2,807-Piece LEGO Mario Kit

1 year 10 months ago

LEGO has officially unveiled a massive Mighty Bowser set that has interactivity with the LEGO Mario series.

Bowser stands at over 32cm tall and 41cm wide and will be released on October 1. It will cost $269.99 and includes 2,807 pieces, as revealed on the LEGO Store.

Set number 71411 will include a brand new LEGO piece to authentically recreate Bowser's spikes. It also features a fireball launcher and a poseable head, neck, arms, and fingers.

Though his hefty base and background pillars look pretty good by themselves (and also feature a hidden POW Block), they're also designed to work with the interactive Mario, Luigi, and Peach sets that LEGO has been releasing over the last couple of years.

The Mighty Bowser set is officially the biggest Mario set to be released so far, eclipsing the Bowser's Airship set that previously took the cake at $99.99 and 1,152 pieces. Not part of the official line but still very much a Mario LEGO set, a Super Mario 64 set was also released that was sold for $169.99.

Mighty Bowser is LEGO's latest foray into the gaming world, having previously released sets based on Sonic the Hedgehog (with the Green Hill Zone) and Horizon: Forbidden West (with the Tallneck). Preorders are not live yet, but you can follow @IGNDeals on Twitter for updates.

Stardew Valley: How to Get Clay

1 year 10 months ago

Stardew Valley is a country life RPG where you’ll be farming, harvesting, fishing, and generally doing a lot of nature stuff. Within the game, there are many resources that you can use for crafting various items. Some are just aesthetic, others actually can help you to grow your farm in certain ways with tools. Clay is one such resource that you’ll often need, so here’s how to get clay in Stardew Valley.

It’s not easily found within the world, however.

How to Get Clay in Stardew Valley

In order to easily get clay, you’ll need to till the ground with a hoe. You can till anywhere from your farm to the beach (and it’s advised that you do this at the beach a lot because it’s found most while tilling there).

Lego Reveals Largest Super Mario Build Yet And It’s None Other Than Bowser

ReedPop is helping bring E3 back in 2023

1 year 10 months ago

Following a Covid-enforced absence, E3 is looking to make a proper in-person comeback at the Los Angeles Convention Center in the second week of June 2023, and ReedPop is going to be helping with its return, bringing expertise from running the likes of PAX, EGX, New York Comic Con and Star Wars Celebration for its first public outing since 2019.

Of course, ReedPop is Eurogamer's parent company, so it’s worth quickly noting what it means for us and the event - and to reassure you that nothing much is changing. Like Star Wars Celebration this is an event in partnership with another party - in this instance with the ESA, which has run E3 since the mid-90s - and even with the likes of ReedPop's wholly-owned shows like PAX and EGX we maintain editorial independence and will be explicit about the link in any coverage you see on the site.

I'll admit to being cautiously excited about the return of E3 proper - though I would say that, wouldn't I? There was something forlorn about strolling through Downtown LA last month while visiting for Summer Games Fest and seeing the LACC standing empty, and after what'll be a four year absence it's going to be something seeing those halls occupied by the games industry once again.

Portal: Companion Collection - Nintendo Switch is the perfect partner for Valve's classics

1 year 10 months ago

The Portal games are genuine classics - brilliant, inventive first-person puzzle games that combine an inventive gameplay mechanic, mind-bending designs and witty storytelling to create a truly special experience. However, the fact is that these games have essentially been absent from the console space since their original releases in 2007 and 2011 respectively. Aside from enhanced backwards compatibility support on Xbox, we've seen nothing new from either game since the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 era. The good news is that this changed spectacularly last week with the release of Portal: The Companion Collection.

This new double-pack from Valve and Nvidia Lightspeed Studios combines Portal 1 and Portal 2 along with bonus gameplay content at an attractive £13.49/$19.99. Both games run on the landmark Source engine, most famous for powering 2004's Half-Life 2, so obviously, we're not looking at state-of-the-art technology here. However, brilliance in game and art design make both titles a great match for Nintendo's hybrid console and it's been fantastic to revisit these games, which turn out to be a perfect fit for the platform.

Before we go into platform differences, it's worth discussing the basic graphical makeup of both titles and the huge artistic and technical improvements made between the two games. Portal is essentially a series of basic puzzle rooms. The puzzles are interesting enough but the environments are simple, with rudimentary flat-textured walls, angular geometry and a heavy reliance on baked lighting and shadows. The game has an austere look with repetitive, straightforward artwork. Given the constraints of the project - developed by a team of about 10 people - these limitations make sense.

Gwent: Rogue Mage Turns the Card Game Into a Deckbuilding Roguelike

1 year 10 months ago

You read that right, the usually multiplayer card game Gwent is has now been turned into a single player deckbuilding roguelike. Gwent: Rogue Mage is out today and considered a “single-player expansion” to Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. Rogue Mage is fully standalone and doesn’t require owning the original game.

The press release cites this reason as “due to its extensive scope and single-player nature, Rogue Mage is distributed separately from Gwent: The Witcher Card Game.” Seeing as Rogue Mage does offer a fully single-player experience, it doesn’t require an internet connection. For those who would like to play Rogue Mage on differently platforms, “players can also utilize cross-saves, allowing them to transfer their progress across all supported platforms when logged in via a GOG account.”

As for setting, Rogue Mage takes place “hundreds of years” before the Witcher games, when there were deadly monsters everywhere but not yet any Witchers. Players will control the mage Alzur, and his companion Lily as they “embark on a dangerous quest to create a living weapon that will eradicate the monster threat once and for all.”

Gwent: Rogue Mage is available for PC on Steam and GOG as well as iOS and Android devices. The game is $9.99 on all platforms, but Steam and GOG offer a digital deluxe edition for $19.99 that includes:

Stardew Valley: How to Get Hardwood

1 year 10 months ago

Stardew Valley features a ton of different supplies and resources that you’ll need in order to craft things within the game. Not to mention they’re how you can make some extra coins. You’ll find an abundance of wood wherever you chop, but what about that red wood known as Hardwood? What gives with that? It seems you’ll need a small amount of them for crafting certain things, so it must not be very common.

How to Get Hardwood in Stardew Valley

You’re right in those assumptions. In order to get Hardwood, you need to chop up those fallen tree logs, giant stumps or the large Mahogany Trees.

The best place to find these is the Secret Woods in the northwest corner of Cindersap Forest. Six of the large stumps spawn here every day, even if they’re cut down the day before, meaning you’ve got a never-ending supply of Hardwood in Stardew Valley.

To reach here, though, you’ll need to cut through the log lying in the way just above the Wizard’s Tower, shown in the image below, which requires you to have a Steel Axe to cut through.

GTA 5 and Red Dead 2 VR Mod Creator Issued Takedown Notice by Take-Two

1 year 10 months ago

Grand Theft Auto 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, and the Mafia trilogy publisher Take-Two Interactive has ordered a popular virtual reality modder to take down his adaptations of the games.

As reported by PC Gamer, Luke Ross said on his Patreon that Take-Two is ordering that he removes "all their copyrighted works" from his Patreon page.

While his GTA 5 mod is available to download separately, the Red Dead Redemption 2 and Mafia ones are still works in progress and are therefore only available on his Patreon, where Ross reportedly earns more than $20,000 a month.

That being said, Ross noted that the takedown was "filed as a copyright issue and not a licensing issue, so the motivation for the request does not appear to be related to the fact that there is money involved."

It did come as a surprise however, Ross said, as "none of my modifications are built using software belonging to Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc, and the modifications are not intended to replace their games, nor are they a means of exploiting Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc's proprietary IP or assets."

Ross is hoping to gain further clarification on what exactly he did wrong, but warned fans that if he can't, he will need to take down all of his Take-Two related content.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Won't Feature New Story Elements, But That Doesn't Mean It's a Basic Remaster

1 year 10 months ago

Ever since Final Fantasy 7 Remake concluded with its shocking reveal, fans have been speculating on the possibility of a Crisis Core remaster. The moment was certainly ripe for an updated release of the prequel starring Zack Fair, the warrior with a suspicious resemblance to Cloud Strife. Aside from its connections to Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s story, Crisis Core has been difficult to find in recent years, forcing fans to resort to emulators and other measures.

That made Square Enix’s announcement of a Crisis Core remaster, which coincided with last month’s reveal of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, all the more welcome. It’s not any mere port, either. Square Enix is overhauling the graphics, the interface, and somewhat controversially, the voice cast.

“Various improvements have been made to nearly all other scenes and battles, to a point where it could be said that the work we are doing is akin to creating a ‘remake,’” producer Mariko Sato says. “However, as the core elements such as the story are grounded in the original work, we call it a ‘remaster.’

A Faithful Retelling

Speaking with IGN in a brand-new interview, Sato discussed Square Enix’s intentions for the remaster, outlining the differences between the various platforms and whether or not it will ultimately connect with Rebirth. Veteran producer Yoshinori Kitase was also on hand to shed some light on how the project managed to be greenlit in the first place.

Preview: Xenoblade Chronicles 3’s Darker Start Sets a New Tone

1 year 10 months ago

xenoblade chronicles 3 preview

Xenoblade Chronicles 3, out for the Nintendo Switch later this month, is an anticipated tentpole release for the hybrid console. And thanks to some schedule shuffling, it's sooner than ever! We’ve spent time with the game’s opening areas, which set a foundation for what should be another long, sweeping adventure.

Combat will feel similar to players of earlier Xenoblade games. You probably know at this point if you like it! It feels a lot like MMO combat. Characters auto-attack, and the strategy comes through selection and timing of special skills. The Xenoblade Chronicles 3 version is all about combos that trigger Break, Topple and Daze statuses. Attacks have special effects if you attack from certain directions, and a handy arrow on the UI lets you know your current angle designation.

The early tutorial sequences of a JRPG can be something of a slog, as the game's long running time means a couple of hours getting you settled isn't entirely unreasonable. Still, Xenoblade 3 breaks down elements and rolls them out in bits! This helps with a battle interface that otherwise might overwhelm.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Preview – A New Familiar Feeling

1 year 10 months ago

With the recent Nintendo Direct and just under three weeks to go until the launch of Xenoblade Chronicles 3, the hype for this game is approaching its climax. Even though Nintendo has been happy to share tons of information with the public, there’s plenty more that’s new and familiar for fans of the franchise to dig into.

First off, the battle system in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will look unsurprisingly familiar to those who have played past titles. You can run around with the left stick, approach an enemy to start auto-attacking it, and use special attacks called Arts with the face buttons. But it’s the additions to this system that help to keep the experience feeling fresh.

Attack canceling returns from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 to help give a relatively passive battle system a bit more interactivity. Canceling auto attacks with Arts can boost the efficacy of these special moves. The margin of error for timing the attack cancel isn’t massive, but it’s narrow enough to assure that the player is actually paying attention instead of just spamming Arts as soon as their cooldown ends.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3: The Final Preview

1 year 10 months ago

If you’re planning on spending over 100 hours on the next chapter of Monolith Soft’s epic JRPG, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, then you might understandably have your fingers crossed that the combat system sitting at the core of that adventure can go the distance. Having spent the past couple of weeks submerged in that incredibly complex battle system, I can confidently say that so far it has not disappointed. Reusing all the best parts of combat from previous games, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 adds layer upon layer of customizability, class options, and crazy transformation mechanics that turns two characters into a purple demon creature that rides a wicked surfboard. Although the stories, characters, and wonderfully bizarre worlds have always been the main attraction in Xenoblade, these awesome combat overhauls are a welcome change in a journey that demands so much time.

No Xenoblade game is complete without the tactical combat system that had me controlling a squad of characters swinging weapons bigger than their bodies. Like previous entries, I needed to master various combat Arts, perform deadly and satisfying Chain Attacks, and trigger super abilities that let me smack around bad guys with extreme prejudice. But while it retains most of the tried and true formula that defined it, it also adds a ton of new stuff to get excited about, especially a new system that allows characters to take on one another’s character classes and master their skill sets. Once mastered, I could choose to retain certain skills from that class while switching to another one, allowing me to take the best parts from each class and create a custom cocktail of my favorite abilities rolled up into one build. Plus, I could make them wear the clothes of any classes I’d mastered so far, which is a great touch.

Zack's back for a brand new audience in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 - Reunion

1 year 10 months ago

Final Fantasy 7 fans were on cloud nine after the recent 25th anniversary showcase. Not only did Square Enix reveal the second part of the Remake trilogy - named Rebirth - but it also announced a remaster of the PSP spin-off Crisis Core.

Since then, fans have been speculating that Crisis Core's story will have increased significance in the wake of Remake. The release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 - Reunion between Remake games surely offers a chance to recontextualise its story and characters.

Of course, the team at Square Enix are keen not to spoil any forthcoming plans, but it's a fair assumption that Zack - the star of Crisis Core - may have a bigger role to play in the trilogy's future.

After 10 hours I think I'm nearing the end of Xenoblade Chronicles 3's tutorial

1 year 10 months ago

I'm a bit baffled by Xenoblade Chronicles 3. What's set to be a climax for a trilogy that started off so spectacularly with the 2010 original - and following on from the stuttering start of creator Tetsuya Takahashi's infamously stunted Xenosaga series - this JRPG epic has an awfully slow start all of its own. The dozen hour mark is fast creeping up and the training wheels remain firmly in place, while perhaps more frustratingly so too are embargo restrictions that mean I can't tell you much about the really interesting stuff.

Still, I can tell you some of the pertinent stuff. If you're a returning fan, know this: Xenoblade Chronicles 3 takes the best bits of the preceding games, folding in a fascinating evolution of Xenoblade Chronicles 2's broad and brilliant combat, the more defined fantasy of the original (and ditching some of the more embarrassing anime excesses) and some of the more open-ended elements of Xenoblade Chronicles X (though sadly I can't really go into any detail on them just yet).

Perhaps most importantly, it's technically far more impressive than the clearly compromised Xenoblade Chronicles 2. That was a launch year title for the Switch way back at the tail-end of 2017, of course, and in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 you can feel the five years of progress and familiarity that Monolith Soft have built up with the hardware - this looks simply sublime playing either handheld or docked, with the impossible vistas of the world of Aionios stretching to the distance (it bodes well for Breath of the Wild 2, too, with Monolith Soft's epic topography so key to the success of Zelda's open world outings). It's seriously impressive stuff, and Digital Foundry will have a deeper dive on the details closer to launch.
