Take a breather from GTA 6 hype with Flock's brilliant new demo

5 months 1 week ago

Spare a thought for any game attempting to compete with GTA 6 today. It can't be easy when big hitters like that inevitably suck all the air out the room, but bless the folks at Hollow Ponds for poking their heads above the 4K flamingo parapet anyway by releasing a lovely new demo for their upcoming critter collect 'em up Flock today. I've just been giving it a go over lunch, and it is truly a very relaxing way to decompress after a morning of poring over GTA gubbins.

In just one trailer, GTA 6 traces a Rockstar lineage through video games and cinema

5 months 1 week ago

It's just one trailer. Let's get that bit out of the way first. It's a single trailer, 90 seconds long - or really, about 77 seconds of actual footage - and of all the world's video game developers now, none are granted more benefit of the doubt, more pre-loaded, automatically qualified hype, than Rockstar. Nobody needs a breathless reaction to one trailer less. As other studios scrambled to meme Rockstar's announcement-of-an-announcement post the other day, dipping their own reveals and posts in neon pink and orange, Christian Donlan described it as like being in Jurassic Park. A herd of already majestic Brachiosaurus and Gallimimus quietly minding their business in a field - and suddenly: T-Rex. A whole ecosystem scatters.

Its arrival - especially its nice and early one, like a dinner guest before you've done the Hoovering - means we've had to scatter in our own way too. We've run through what it suggests will feature in GTA 6 already, and the magic thread it points to at the heart of its story, and gathered everything we could possibly know about GTA 6 and put it in one place as a guide. But what struck me about it is less what it says about what might be in the next Grand Theft Auto, than what it says about Rockstar - and what Rockstar thinks of Grand Theft Auto itself.

Born of Bread, out today, is a Paper Mario-style RPG starring a cheeky dough golem

5 months 1 week ago

When first I learned of Born Of Bread, it was getting towards lunchtime - yes, 10.30am absolutely counts as "getting toward lunchtime" - and my brain was immediately filled with savoursome thoughts of simulated baking. Born of Bread isn't actually a baking sim. Even better than that: it's some kind of spin on vintage Ninty RPG Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, except that instead of being made of paper, the main character Loaf is made of living dough... but kind of looks like he's made of paper, this being a 2.5D game with flat character art. Look, just watch the trailer while I make myself a sandwich.

'This F**king Sucks' — Rockstar Devs Bemoan GTA 6 Trailer Leak

5 months 1 week ago

Following the leak of the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer, Rockstar developers took to social media to express their bitter disappointment.

Less than 24 hours before its anticipated debut, the GTA 6 trailer leaked on X/Twitter and immediately spread like wildfire across social media. The leaked trailer contained a giant crypto watermark, making for a poor viewing experience for fans.

While the X/Twitter leak account was suspended, the post had thousands of likes before the trailer was pulled, which means plenty of fans saw it before Rockstar intended.

Rockstar soon followed-up by releasing the real trailer to its channels with a self-deprecating comment: "Our trailer has leaked so please watch the real thing on YouTube."

Multiple Rockstar developers took to social media to express their disappointment at what had happened. “This f**king sucks,” one GTA developer said in a now deleted post on X/Twitter. “I was hoping to watch this for the first time tomorrow along with my fellow teammates and coworkers. I feel we deserved that moment.”

“Well, that f**king sucks,” said another Rockstar developer in an also deleted post. Rockstar graphics programmer Angel Ortiz also commented on social media: “I'm actually not going to watch this until I'm in the office with the people I made this with and who worked so f**king hard to make it happen.”

Then: “Okay, we watched it together. Let's f**king go.”

Raven explains why Call Of Duty: Warzone's next map has lower player count

5 months 1 week ago

The first season for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is set to arrive tomorrow, 6th December, across platforms. This will see a variety of in-game content added, including new Warzone map Urzikstan. This map will launch with 100 player count and, as noted by CharlieIntel, it is 20 percent smaller than the series' Al Mazrah map.

This has led some players to lament the comparatively condensed player numbers for each match. Typically, Warzone hosts 150-player lobbies. However, developer Raven Software explained its decision in a post on X, formerly Twitter, stating it will ensure a good gameplay balance.

"This morning we announced that the player count for Warzone Battle Royale is 100 players," reads the statement. "Our top priority is creating an optimal and fun experience for all of our players based on critical metrics.

Dead Space Has Dropped to Just $8 for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Members

5 months 1 week ago

The 2023 Dead Space remake is widely regarded as one of the top games of the year, and it's now available for just $7.99 for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members (and £7.99 for those in the UK as well). That's a colossal discount for, in my opinion, one of the best games ever made. So, just to recap and ensure you're following; this is the full Dead Space Digital Deluxe Edition, not just an upgrade, but the full game + digital extras as well, for $7.99. That's 90% off the MSRP and $72 in overall savings. Wow.

You likely already know that Dead Space is available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate via EA Play, but in all honestly, it's hard to deny how good of a deal this is. This is especially true as it's a game to add to your digital library without the presumed worry of losing access if you ever need to drop your Game Pass subscription even down a single tier.

Update: It is also now clear that this is likely a genuine excellent deal; as other EA games like Battlefield 2042, Need for Speed, Wild Hearts, and more have also received similar massive discounts for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members. We'll maintain the rest of the original article below as well.

The Last of Us Part 2: Remastered's No Return Roguelike Mode Gets First Look Trailer

5 months 1 week ago

Naughty Dog and PlayStation have released a first look trailer for The Last of Us Part 2: Remastered's No Return roguelike mode, which arrives alongside the PlayStation 5 re-release on January 19, 2024.

The trailer, below, offers a look at the roguelike gameplay players can experience in the mode, which essentially revolves around the player getting as far as they can in a level while acquiring upgrades, eventually dying, and then restarting the run with those upgrades from the beginning. The gameplay loop continues as such, with players getting stronger and further the more runs they do.

The mode is naturally single-player only, and just to be clear, non-canon to The Last of Us main story. Players can therefore enjoy some creative liberty in the mode by, as the trailer shows, playing as the likes of Ellie, Dina, and other main characters with some wild and wacky costumes.

Various maps were also shown off in the trailer, including Hardware Store, Forest, State Street, Hospital, Hospital Basement, Gas Station, and more. No Return seemingly includes different game modes within itself too, with various maps featuring subtitles like Hunted, Assault, Holdout, and Capture.

Randomised mods will also affect different levels, though from the trailer it's unclear exactly how these will work. One mod seemingly applies the listening mode permanently, for example.

All the things we noticed in the GTA 6 trailer you may have missed

5 months 1 week ago

After years of waiting, Rockstar has finally given us our first slice of GTA 6. In the new trailer, we are introduced to the game's protagonists, Lucia and Jason, and the crime-riddled world that they live in. This is Vice City, GTA's take on Miami, Florida.

I am now going to break down the trailer, listing all the little things I noticed. While the whole thing's only 91 seconds in length (which is admittedly more than we got for GTA5), the studio has managed to pack a lot in. The trailer gives us a real sense of what we can expect on the game's eventual release, which is currently slated for 2025 across PS5 and Xbox Series consoles.

Before we dive on in, here is the first trailer for GTA 6 in all its glory once more.

PC Gamers Brace Themselves for the Inevitable GTA 6 Double-Dip in 2026

5 months 1 week ago

Grand Theft Auto 6 saw the release of its debut trailer last night — earlier than publisher and developer Rockstar had planned — and with it confirmation of a 2025 release date. But it’s the platforms Rockstar has listed for GTA 6 at launch, notably only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, that has sent shockwaves throughout the PC gaming community.

A cursory glance online at PC gaming communities, subreddits, and social spaces shows a mix of downbeat acceptance and shock that Rockstar plans to skip PC for GTA 6’s launch in this day and age.

The option is either waiting to play GTA 6 from 2026, or perhaps beyond, or buckle up and go for the famous Rockstar game double-dip.

That’s exactly what some fans have said they’re going to do now their worst fears have been realised. Over on the PC gaming subreddit, post after post bemoans Rockstar’s decision. “I'm not double-dipping. 2027 it is,” joked SilverDragon7. “I heard they also confirmed it for the PS6, PS7, and PS8,” added OctopusRoyalty.

There are plenty of serious comments from PC gamers angered by Rockstar’s decision. “Come on man! Even FromSoft releases it on PC. Hate Rockstar for this man, come on,” said Quirky-Football9043.

“Does this surprise me? No, considering their history. Do I think this is a brain-dead decision in 2023? Hell yes,” said FearlessButterfly3. “We got stiffed on Red Dead Remaster and now this. Thanks for nothing Rockstar,” said FrootLoop23.

How Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora's Ikran Flight Quest Was Made - Concept to Controller

5 months 1 week ago

Ubisoft’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora offers us all the chance to visit the lush, forested homeworld of the Na’vi. And, at the very top of a floating mountain, you’ll be able to live out your own version of an iconic Avatar scene: taming and flying a Banshee (or ‘Ikran’ in the native Na’vi language.)

But just as important as the flight is the journey to the mountain’s summit; a climb full of incredible views, plants with strange abilities, and puzzles to solve. That climb is the centrepiece of Take Flight, one of Frontiers of Pandora’s milestone quests. It’s the work of dozens of developers, and we’ve spoken to several of them to find out how they made it.

Our latest episode of Concept to Controller puts the spotlight on six roles from across Ubisoft’s Sweden-based Massive Entertainment; creative direction, game direction, narrative, sound, technical art, and cinematics. Across the duration of the episode you can see how the Take Flight mission was planned, conceptualised, built, and polished. It’s a snapshot of the entire development process, featuring behind-the-scenes footage and in-depth interviews with Massive staff. You can watch it in the video panel at the top of this article.

“We're looking to create a level that makes the player feel powerful, something that is joyful and happy, something where you feel rewarded from just moving through this space,” says game director Ditte Deenfeldt of Massive’s aims for the Take Flight quest.

A Highland Song review - a magical sonnet hidden beneath a game

5 months 1 week ago

A surprise discovery I made a little way into A Highland Song, the latest from Overboard and Heaven's Vault developer Inkle: it doesn't matter if you fall off a cliff. This, I think, is quite weird for a climbing game. And especially one where a sense of peril seems at first to be such a central part of what it's trying to do. As a girl named Moira, you must run from a miserable home in the Scottish highlands to visit your uncle, at a faraway lighthouse. You spend a week, or probably more, scrabbling up the side of mountains, sheltering from storms in cave mouths, spelunking into dead ends in search of directional clues - you've no actual map, by the way - and you do this racing against both a shrinking health bar and each day's ever-fading sun.

But! No actual peril. Fall off or run out of health and you just pop back to where you were before. The result, combined with a few other snags, makes for a less than stellar game about hiking, or survival, or indeed climbing. But it makes for a wonderful game about the mountains - about experiencing the natural world, in fact - which is what A Highland Song is really aiming to be.

A Highland Song review: a beautiful snapshot of wild places that stumbles a little

5 months 1 week ago

A while back, I had a feeling we'd see a lot of games about nature and plants and the wild coming out over the next few years, as developers and players alike emerged from being shut inside for basically a year like dairy cows during their annual spring turnout. We may not all be not be naturally disposed to it, but there's much to be said for the fleeting, if unbridled happiness that comes from running barefoot into the teeth of the wind or getting caught in a rainstorm without a coat.

Nine times out of ten, you might get wet and have cold fingers, but that one time that you get wet, have cold fingers and feel red-raw and alive is a doozy. A Highland Song, a lone and dangerous jaunt through the Scottish highlands, is trying to capture that feeling, most especially in segments where you sprint across rocks and heather alongside a deer. At these times you leap in time to swelling music, and whoop and yell in spontaneous joy. It's lovely. It's also easy to stumble.
