Switch Online Memberships and eShop Gift Cards Are Back on Sale After Black Friday

5 months 1 week ago

While the Black Friday sales may have come and gone, there are still some sneaky discounts hanging around or even cropping back up. Most recently we even saw an Xbox Series X console drop to just $349 at retailers like Amazon and Walmart -- don't get too excited it sold out fast. But while these new Nintendo deals aren't as dramatic, it's still worth bringing attention to it. Nintendo Switch Online memberships and eShop gift cards are currently 10% off at Amazon, and the best deal in this sale is currently on the Family 12-month pass + Expansion Pack, which is now down to just $71.89. Just so you're aware; you need to add the relevant pass or gift card to your cart to see the aforementioned 10% discount.

10% Off Nintendo Switch Online Memberships

You will need a Nintendo Switch Online membership if you plan on accessing the online portions of your favorite games. That includes being able to play online against other opponents in Super Smash Bros Ultimate or Splatoon 3, downloading other people's creations in Minecraft or Mario Maker 2, or visiting someone else's island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Exclusive: Even More Doctor Who Coming to Magic: The Gathering

5 months 1 week ago

Back in October we got to reveal cards from Magic: The Gathering's then upcoming Doctor Who Commander decks. Those decks are now out, but there's more Doctor Who still to come to MTG thanks to a brand new Secret Lair - and today we've got a first look at three of the five cards from it.

Flip through the slideshow below to see the new cards, and read on to hear more about them from Wizards of the Coast's Gavin Verhey.

All mechanically unique cards, the three we are revealing above depict David Tennant returning as the Fourteenth Doctor, Neil Patrick Harris' villanous Toymaker, and Yasmin Finney's new companion Rose Noble. All of these cards, as well as two more to be revealed next week, are part of a drop called Secret Lair x Doctor Who: Regeneration that will go on sale on the Secret Lair website on December 11.

I sent a couple questions to Principal Designer Gavin Verhey about both the drop and the Fourteenth Doctor's design specifically, and here's what he had to say:

IGN: Why make a Secret Lair for these cards later rather than put them in the Commander decks earlier this year?

Gavin Verhey, Principal Designer, Magic: The Gathering: Hi there! My name is Gavin Verhey, Principal Designer on Magic, lead designer of Doctor Who Commander – and of this Secret Lair drop as well! I have some answers for you.

Endure The Swarm pits your sokoban skills against endless, horrible insects

5 months 1 week ago

Endure The Swarm, which launches on Friday 8th December, takes that most abstract and respectable of game genres, the block-pushing puzzler, and fills it with ghastly, flesh-eating insects. There’s no amount of pesticide that can stay this tide, nor (sadly) is there the option to stand on a chair screaming and waving a broom. Rather, you must call upon your mammalian mastery of spatial reasoning to survive. The insect hivemind, you see, is incapable of grasping the complexities of block positioning.

DF Weekly: Arkham Knight on Switch is disastrously poor

5 months 1 week ago

This week's DF Direct Weekly kicks off with our 'hot take' on the state of Batman: Arkham Trilogy on Nintendo Switch. We film the show on Friday morning and so only had an hour or so with the game before we sat down to record, but we had to know the answer to one burning question: can Nintendo's handheld hybrid really run Batman: Arkham Knight? Hopes were high for another 'impossible port' but alas, the final game is practically a disaster, brutally cutback in every conceivable way and plagued with profound stuttering problems.

Lighting is savagely downgraded, texture quality is a total mess, shadows take a trip back to PS2 era standards and geometry is culled. Arkham Knight routinely fails to hit its 30 frames per second target, often lingering in the low to mid-20s but worse than that is the pervasive stuttering problem. Most strongly evident in the Batmobile sections, Arkham Knight is clearly facing system-level bottlenecks at every turn: streaming environmental detail at speeds has a clearly measurable impact on the CPU, while the addition of collision physics stacks on top of that, taking performance into the teens.

Tens of Thousands of People Are Already Waiting to Watch the GTA 6 Trailer 24 Hours Before Launch

5 months 1 week ago

Will the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer break records for viewing numbers? It seems entirely possible, given the incredible interest even now, 24 hours before it’s due to go live.

Rockstar Games uploaded a video premiere for “Trailer 1” to YouTube that includes a countdown to launch at 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK on December 5.

But eagle-eyed viewers also noticed the GTA 6 Trailer 1 runtime was revealed via a method of exposing a glitch on YouTube’s end. On mobile, while unsubbed from the Rockstar Games channel, view the video preview through the YouTube app’s search. Notice the little tag that reads “upcoming” on the bottom right, and the runtime should pop up over it.

There may be spoilers ahead!

Just in case you don’t want the runtime spoiled, we’ve added a spoiler tag above.

The runtime of the GTA 6 Trailer 1 is one minute and 31 seconds. That should afford plenty of time for a decent look at the game. Perhaps we’ll even get a release date and launch platforms.

Remarkably, tens of thousands of people are already queuing up to watch Trailer 1. At the time of this article’s publication, nearly 24 hours before go time, 43,172 people were waiting to see what may well end up as the biggest video game trailer of all time.

Orten Was The Case deserves a more appreciative player than me

5 months 1 week ago

Once in a while I have to figure out how to recommend a game I know I'm never going to touch again. Orten Was The Case is an adventure game, which triggers a reflexive "ugh", and it's a big elaborate puzzle, which I have limited patience for, and it's a time-loop game, making it a cool and well-realised concept that happens to be a poor fit for my scattered brain. I wish I enjoyed it as much as some of you will, because it's clearly a bit special.

Quan Chi Has Bones To Pick In His Mortal Kombat 1 Gameplay Trailer

5 months 1 week ago

Mortal Kombat 1 Quan Chi Gameplay Trailer

Next week, Mortal Kombat 1 is getting its second DLC fighter in the form of the Nether Realm’s favorite wizard, Quan Chi. His gameplay trailer makes no bones about the fact that he’s an extremely formidable fighter.

Quan Chi sports his usual arsenal of necromancy-based offense, such as summoning skeletons and firing skulls, but he can now conjure giant tentacles from presumably another reality. He also tag teams with upcoming Kameo fighter Khameleon, who becomes available in January. We particularly enjoy seeing Quan Chi and Shang Tsung make perhaps the most delightfully eye-rolling Deadly Alliance reference ever, plus the bonus tease of another impending guest fighter, Peacemaker, who arrives in February.

Owners of Mortal Kombat 1’s Premium Edition or Kombat Pack get access to Quan Chi early on December 14. Everyone else will have to wait until December 21. Quan Chi follows Invincible’s Omni-Man, who hit the game last month, on the DLC character roadmap, leaving Ermac, Takeda, Peacemaker, and The Boys’ Homelander.

What Made Grand Theft Auto: Vice City So Special

5 months 1 week ago

There really is no original discussion left to be had about 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Every spoonful of praise it’s deserved to have heaped upon it over the years has been dolloped. Every pixel has been pored over. Every Easter egg analysed. Every angle exhausted.

GTA: Vice City’s status is cemented: it’s legendary. A key pioneer of open world action, with a style like no other, and a soundtrack that’s beyond reproach. Released a mere 12 months after the astonishing GTA III, as far as sequels go they don’t get much more spectacular.

Of course, none of this is news to the 17-odd million people who bought it, or indeed the unknown millions more who’ve played it. To be honest, writing about GTA: Vice City is a little like trying to find a new way to describe how good the 1990s Chicago Bulls were at basketball.

We get it.

Still, for some of you, 2002 really is a literal lifetime ago. Perhaps beyond it. For some of you, maybe GTA: Vice City is little more than a distant artefact, with little to no personal resonance. A retro-themed retro relic itself, coated in two decades of digital dust.

Wombat Pine Professional review: an excellent keyboard for Windows and Mac

5 months 1 week ago

Last year, I bemoaned the lack of Mac-friendly mechanical keyboards in my review of the Das Keyboard MacTigr. It seems that someone heard my calls, as I've got the Wombat Pine Professional sat on my desk to review. It may not be from a brand many of you know, but the parent company of Wombat, KSI (not that one) first made peripherals to pair with Apple's IIe four decades ago. Now they've released a full-size wireless mechanical keyboard that, on paper, looks like a solid option for Mac users looking to upgrade their typing experience without giving up the benefits of Mac-specific designs.

The Pine Pro, in its grey and black colourway here, looks classy and purposeful. The grey chassis keycaps and metal top plate match the Space Grey of my MacBook Pro nicely, as well as being a near-match to my Logitech MX Master 3S mouse I use for work, meaning everything ties together nicely. Considering Apple has always valued aesthetics, that's a big win for the Pine Pro. If this grey colourway isn't for you though, the Pine Pro is also available in other colourways including blue, green and pink for something a little more funky.

This is a sturdily built keeb too, especially with the combo of a half-plastic, half-anodised-aluminium case which offers no deck flex to speak of and a reassuring heft. The two level feet on the bottom of the keyboard also feel good; it's nice to have a choice of typing angle even if the default feels comfortable.

Against The Storm review: a roguelite citybuilder awash with great ideas

5 months 1 week ago

Following two years in early access, roguelite citybuilder Against The Storm has finally reached its 1.0 milestone. It’s a combination of genres that seem to pair together as naturally as sausages and strawberry jam. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of both of these things as separate entities, but together? My assumption was that they would prove too strange to stomach, but much like the cursed pork and berry snack that became a staple of my university diet, the result is a thrilling concoction that delights the palette. I’ll say it right up top: Against The Storm is one of this year’s best.

Sony Pulls Discovery Videos PlayStation Users Already Own, Sparking Concern Over Our Digital Future

5 months 1 week ago

Sony has signalled its intention to pull some PlayStation content even from those who bought it, sparking concern from customers.

In a brief notice on the PlayStation website, Sony said it planned to remove hundreds of Discovery films from users’ video libraries, preventing them from watching the content they’d paid money for. Sony explained the decision as being due to “content licensing arrangements with content providers”.

Here’s the statement in full:

As of 31 December 2023, due to our content licensing arrangements with content providers, you will no longer be able to watch any of your previously purchased Discovery content and the content will be removed from your video library.
We sincerely thank you for your continued support.
Thank you,
PlayStation Store

There follows a long list of affected video content, which includes over 1,000 seasons of shows, including Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman, Tanked, MythBusters, and An Idiot Abroad.

The decision has sparked a backlash online, and fuelled concern around ownership of digital media. Video game preservation is a hot topic within the industry, but the issue of content removal from digital platforms is top of mind of movie and TV makers, too. Last month, Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro backed Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan in championing physical media amid controversial moves by streamers that have seen some films pulled from availability.

Here's The First Trailer For Amazon's Fallout TV Show

5 months 1 week ago

Fallout TV Show First Trailer

After years of waiting, Amazon Studios has released the first trailer for its upcoming TV adaptation of Fallout. The series is set to premiere on April 12 on Amazon Prime, and this teaser proves that visually speaking, the series appears to faithfully capture the essence of Bethesda’s beloved RPG.

Fallout is brought to life by Westworld showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, with Bethesda head Todd Howard serving as executive producer. The cast includes Ella Purnell as a freshly emerged Vault 33 dweller named Lucy and Walton Goggins as a gunslinging ghoul aptly dubbed “The Ghoul,” and the series synopsis reads as follows:

Based on one of the greatest video game series of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them.

The trailer packs in what a lot of fans would expect from a Fallout adaptation: power armor, vaults, irradiated, mutated creatures, exploding headshots, and a dark sense of humor. Here's hoping it can live up to recent live-action success stories such as The Last of Us and Twisted Metal.

FFVII Ever Crisis Steam Version Can Link to Mobile Version

Square Enix shared a new video on the company's YouTube account that shows a preview of the Steam version of FFVII Ever Crisis, and in the description it stated that the Steam version of the game can link to mobile version. [Thanks, Wario64!]

The video description noted that due to the ability to link data between the smartphone version and the Steam version, players can enjoy playing FFVII Ever Crisis on both systems. The process for data linking has not yet been explained.

The video shared by Square Enix focuses on Final Fantasy VII, Chapter 1, Main Section 2 "Meeting the Flower Girl". This covers the first meeting between Aerith and Cloud in Sector 8 on Loveless Street when she gives Cloud a flower. After Cloud meets Aerith, he is surrounded by Shinra Security Officers and must fight them off to leave the sector. The footage shows off the keyboard inputs for the various buttons on the game's UI which have been retooled to work without a touchscreen. Each button has been replaced with a specific key on the keyboard. The video of the Steam version of FFVII Ever Crisis did not show off any footage of mouse inputs.

The PlayStation Access Controller Review - software's the star, but you'll probably still need a DualSense

5 months 1 week ago

The PlayStation Access Controller is a bold statement by PlayStation that the platform holder understands the importance of hardware accessibility. Players previously excluded from enjoying PlayStation games due to the lack of hardware choice now have the freedom to expand their gaming horizons.

It's important to note upfront that, while the Access Controller may have similarities to the Xbox Adaptive Controller, it's designed to be a full controller solution without needing external input devices. It's supported by robust accessibility software, rather than acting as a switch hub, like the XAC. There are positives and negatives to this.

The controller itself is aesthetically pleasing, matching the white and black colour scheme of the PS5 and DualSense controller. The rubber grips on the base are a firm foundation to ensure stability when the device is placed on a table or a wheelchair tray, and it also has four attachment points for different wheelchair mounting solutions. The plastic feels durable, surviving a drop test on both carpeted and wooden floor - and it's certainly going to be dropped on occasions if it rests on a knee. Buttons have a satisfying tactile click, making sure you feel and hear a click without glancing down at the controller. The circular design fits perfectly in your hand allowing you to reach the eight buttons, and the sticks can also retract and extend by holding the lock button.

Jenni Lada: When did you first start here with Stern?

Seth Davis: I've been here for a little over two years. So, couple years ago I I joined and it's been a lot of fun.

What made you decide you wanted to join?

Davis: Stern makes the best pinball machines in the world. I've always been a big gamer. I came from Disney most recently, where I had worked on video games and all that. I’d grown up in an 80s arcade, like a lot of people my age, and, went between video games and pinball machines and all of that. So, having the opportunity to join a company that makes the best products in the world at what they do is just a really unique opportunity. So I moved out to Chicago and joined up.
