Dragonflight’s Dragon Isles Is World of Warcraft’s ‘Biggest Expansion Continent’ Ever

1 year 10 months ago

World of Warcraft’s dragons come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, but historically, its most important and interesting dragons have been, well, really darn big. So it’s unsurprising that their home in WoW’s upcoming Dragonflight expansion, the Dragon Isles, needs space for all of them to hang out.

Which is why, according to production director Patrick Dawson, the Dragon Isles are the biggest continent Blizzard has ever made for an expansion.

“This is the biggest expansion continent we’ve ever done, and that was designed with dragon riding in mind so you can traverse it a little more simply,” Dawson tells IGN. “It’s the land of dragons. They need space.”

When you think of pure geographical size, it’s easy to limit that scope to just horizontal size, but critical to Dragonflight’s alleged enormity is its verticality. The Dragon Isles are built for dragon riding, one of the biggest new features being added this expansion, so there need to be enough heights, valleys, and open spaces for WoW players to rapidly zip, flip, and barrel roll all over the continent.

In fact, the Dragon Isles are so expressly designed around dragon riding that Dawson says Blizzard is unlikely to ever break the feature out of Dragon Isles and take it to other zones, though it’s certainly considering bringing the existing flight feature into the isles at a later point if it makes sense.

For now, Blizzard is focusing on getting the feel of dragon riding just right. In our preview of the pre-alpha, our dragons only knew a couple of flight tricks, but Dawson reassures us that we’ll unlock plenty more flight abilities as the story progresses and won’t always be running out of stamina at the bottom of a hill.

PS Plus Extra July 2022

In case you missed it, Sony recently revamped its PS Plus subscription service. The original version of the service is now the "Essential" tier. The more expensive "Extra" and "Premium" tiers get additional benefits, including the game catalog. The PS Plus Extra lineup for July 2022 is the new service's inaugural one. To commemorate its debut, Sony is leading with a heavy hitter: Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. It, as well as feline adventure game Stray and other titles, will be accessible on July 19, 2022.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is the definitive version of Final Fantasy VII Remake. Exclusive to the PS5 on consoles, Intergrade includes graphical enhancements to take advantage of the PS5's hardware. It also comes with "Episode INTERmission," an exclusive new mini-campaign starring Yuffie Kisaragi. PS4 owners will have access to the base version of Final Fantasy VII Remake. World of Warcraft Dragonflight Preview: WoW Stretches its Wings

1 year 10 months ago

Since the announcement of Dragonflight, the ninth World of Warcraft expansion, Blizzard has been determinedly tight-lipped on the details of what's coming. Understandably so, given that now seems like a really critical time for Blizzard to impress.

Coming off the heels of Shadowlands, which garnered significant criticism for its endgame content and its story (looking at you, Sylvanas), Dragonflight has a lot to prove. It's an expansion that the community has asked about for years, featuring playable dragon characters in the Dracthyr Evoker hero class and a high-speed new mount system in dragon riding. It promises much-needed upgrades to the profession system, and customizable UI. And it's all coming out by the end of this year, per Blizzard.

Fortunately for those of us who have been wondering when the fog around the Dragon Isles might finally lift, Blizzard is preparing to launch its public alpha later this week, and I was able to get a brief, limited taste of what the dragons there have in store.

A New Single-Player Aliens Action Horror Game Is In The Works

1 year 10 months ago

A new game based on the film Aliens is in the works by developer Survios in partnership with 20th Century Games.

Survios primarily develops VR titles and is perhaps best known as the team behind Creed: Rise to Glory. The studio describes the untitled project as a single-player “immersive action horror game,” and it’s being made for PC, console, and VR. The game's website states that it's developed using Unreal Engine 5 and has an original story that takes place between Alien and Aliens "where a battle hardened veteran has a vendetta against the Xenomorphs."

There’s no trailer or screenshots, but Survios says we’ll learn more about the game on July 21 during San Diego Comic-Con at the “Alien: Expanding a Dark and Frightening Universe” panel.

This project is unrelated to Aliens: Dark Descent, the Aliens tactical shooter, announced during Summer Game Fest last month. Survios is hiring for positions on the title, suggesting it’s still very early in development. As such, it has no release window, but hopefully, we’ll get a better idea of what it entails during Comic-Con.

To add a cherry on top, Jairus handed over the launcher to "Master Chief" who fired it at a lake on the back of a Mongoose.

In a year short on Sony and Microsoft exclusives, is this the Switch's best yet?

1 year 10 months ago

This week on the Eurogamer Newscast - also available in audio form! - it's all about Nintendo Switch, which is quietly having yet another brilliant year.

The last few days have seen confirmation of a new Kirby game and a Bayonetta 3 release date (finally!), adding to a solid year so far and a strong end to 2022 which will also see the likes of Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3, Mario Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. It's a bumper crop - especially compared to this year's lack of first-party launches on PlayStation and - most of all - Xbox.

At the same time, the way Nintendo is detailing these games is changing. Notably, there's been no big E3 week Nintendo Direct this year, as the company keeps information on Zelda and Metroid under wraps. Is this leading to an even bigger 2023 - perhaps with new Switch hardware too? Eurogamer's Tom Phillips, Ed Nightingale and Ishraq Subhan discuss.

Mini Metro knock-off launches on Switch today

1 year 10 months ago

UPDATE 19/07/22: Mini Metro developer Dinosaur Polo Club has responded to the release of copycat game Mini Subway.

"As a small indie studio, we recognize that our own successes are, in part, due to standing on the shoulders of giants, and that part of the creative process involves taking inspiration from others and making it your own. Seeing people take inspiration from our games has been an amazing experience, but of course, there's a difference between inspiration and plagiarism," a spokesperson told Eurogamer.

"We owe it to our team to defend the work we've invested so much into, so we evaluate every report of copycat or clone versions of our games to assess whether they breach our trademark. While we always try to reach out to the developers first, if required, we will take legal action.

Total War: Warhammer 3 Immortal Empires Campaign Beta Gets Release Date & New Details

1 year 10 months ago

Today Sega and Creative Assembly announced the release date of the beta of the much-anticipated “Immortal Empires” campaign for Total War: Warhammer 3.

It’ll launch on August 23, exclusively for PC.

The announcement was made alongside the release of a Q&A video starring New Content Team game director Richard Aldridge and New Content Team lead designer Mitchell Heastie.

The video includes answers to a lot of questions from the playerbase. Despite the fact that a lot of them are basically “why we aren’t doing this at launch but maybe in the future,” the two developers do provide quite a bit of interesting information on what we can expect from the campaign.

On top of this, we get to see some brand new gameplay footage of Immortal Empires, which certainly doesn’t hurt.

If you’re unfamiliar with Immortal Empires, it’s Total War: Warhammer 3’s version of TWW2’s “Mortal Empires,” basically joining all three games of the series together into an absolutely massive map with all the available factions, also focusing on gameplay that will be more sandbox-like compared to the original campaign of the game.

Exoprimal Preview: Closed Network Test Impressions

1 year 10 months ago

It feels wise that Exoprimal, a game that opens with a futuristic weather forecast that suggests the foreseeable future will be cloudy with a chance of raptors, doesn’t spend a lot of time explaining itself. At its core, if you’ve played a Gears of War Horde mode session, or a few rounds of Destiny 2’s Gambit, then you’ll likely feel at home with what a round of this reptile blaster has to offer. In its first very limited closed playtest, Exoprimal shows a solid foundation for a PvPvE shooter, and if it sticks with its strengths like the time attack-style objective racing and interesting class design, it could be well worth sinking your teeth into.

The meat of a round of Exoprimal sees a team of five running through a stage, stopping at points to complete small sub-objectives, all of them involving shooting dinosaurs that are falling out of singularities in the sky. Usually this means you need to kill a certain amount of them before moving on, or protect a static location or object from them for a period of time. It’s not just waves of speedy raptors chomping at your heels either. As levels progress, so do the variety of dinos that appear. The demo didn’t reveal too much of its hand here, but there were occasional flying pteranodons and neosaurs, mutated bipedal baddies that can shoot projectiles or explode when you get near them. The enemy mixes were dynamic enough that progressive waves weren’t just a cake walk.

The Electronic Wireless Show episode 194: the best towers in games special

1 year 10 months ago

Matthew is away this week, which leaves me and Nate to take over The Electronic Wireless Show podcast and turn it into a big ol' tower with loads of flamethrowers. That's because we're talking about our favourite towers in games. This means we need to draw a distinction between towers (the gamified concept as most popularly complained about in Ubisoft games) and towers (the architectural thing). Luckily, games have a lot of both.

Meanwhile, Nate's fish issue (fisssue?) is growing worse, I am enjoying the local acts performing on the summer bandstand, and we talk about Lord Of The Rings and Lord Of The Rings related things. What fantasy creature would you like to conjure into real-life existence? We both said orc.

Sony Unveils PlayStation Stars, A New Loyalty Program Aimed At Players

1 year 10 months ago

Sony is rolling out its first-ever PlayStation-focused loyalty program called PlayStation Stars. In a blog post by Grace Chen, vice president of network advertising, loyalty & licensed merchandise, she explains that PlayStation Stars is a free program that rewards points by completing “campaigns” and challenges while playing games.

According to Chen, earning points may require you to “win tournaments, earn specific trophies, or even be the first player to platinum a blockbuster title in your local time zone.” PlayStation Stars will also have a “monthly check-in” campaign that players fulfill simply by playing a game.

You can redeem points on rewards that may include PSN wallet funds or select PS Store products. Users also subscribed to PlayStation Plus gain the added benefit of automatically earning loyalty points for making purchases.

Loyalty points can also be spent on “digital collectibles." Examples described in the post are digital figurines of game characters or old PlayStation devices. These collectibles will evidently come in various rarities, with Chen stating players will always have “ultra rare” collectibles to chase.

These collectibles may sound like NFTs, but they’re not. As Chen adamantly explains in a Washington Post interview, these digital items can’t be traded or sold and PlayStation Stars does not utilize blockchain technology in any way.

1 year 10 months ago

If you love Fire Emblem: Three Houses and its recent spin-off Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes and if your heart beats to the Blue Lions tune, Good Smile Company revealed a couple of upcoming figures that may suit your fancy.

Today the Akihabara-based manufacturer made a figure portraying Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd and one depicting Felix Hugo Fraldarius available for pre-order within its Pop Up Parade brand.

Dimitri can be found at the company’s Japanese and American stores for 4,800 yen and $35.99 respectively.

Felix can also be reserved at the Japanese and American Stores for the same price.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Pop Up Parade brand, it’s Good Smile’s answer to the fact that figures tend to be very expensive. Pop Up Parade figures are usually smaller and a bit less detailed than their pricier counterparts, but they tend to be very affordable and yet still higher quality than the cheap prize figures you often find at similar prices.

Nintendo Acquires Animation Studio And Renames It Nintendo Pictures

Nintendo Acquires Animation Studio

In a move that feels more overdue than surprising, Nintendo acquired animation studio Dynamo Pictures and renamed it Nintendo Pictures. The purchased studio will focus on developing visual content for Nintendo's various IPs.

According to Eurogamer, it's unusual for Nintendo to acquire companies despite its recent SRD and Next-Level Games deals. Moreover, Nintendo Pictures' – Dynamo was a production company behind several animated Pikmin shorts – work will be separate from Illumination, the animation studio behind the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie. Official documentation of the purchase states:

"Nintendo has decided to acquire 100% of the outstanding shares (excluding treasury shares) of Dynamo Pictures and make it a wholly owned subsidiary to strengthen the planning and production structure of visual content in the Nintendo group. The Acquisition is expected to close on October 3, 2022…[and] will have only a minor effect on Nintendo's results for this fiscal year."

Final Fantasy 16's lack of turn-based battles aims to entice younger audiences

Final Fantasy 16 doesn't have turn-based combat, in a bid to appeal to a younger audience.

That's according to producer Naoki Yoshida speaking to Famitsu (and translated by VGC) in an extensive new interview on the game.

"I'm from a generation that grew up with command and turn-based RPGs," said Yoshida. "I think I understand how interesting and immersive it can be. On the other hand, for the past decade or so, I've seen quite a number of opinions saying 'I don't understand the attraction of selecting commands in video games'.

Rumbleverse: Wrestling-Themed Battle Royale Launches Next Month

1 year 10 months ago

Rumbleverse, the Fortnite meets pro wrestling Battle Royale game, will be released next month on August 11, for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, and PC through the Epic Games Store.

The free-to-play, 40-person Battle Royale will feature a battle pass too, but its Season 1 doesn't start until a week after launch on August 18. Iron Galaxy Studios has not announced pricing for the battle pass but, given that Fortnite's Epic Games is also publishing Rumbleverse, it will likely cost around $10 for the standard version.

A new trailer (below) was released alongside the release date announcement, showcasing some of the wackiest moments from Rumbleverse's network tests.

"Rumbleverse has been a passion project for us and a real testament to the skills and experience of our team,” said Iron Galaxy co-CEO Adam Boyes. "We can’t wait to see everyone pour into Grapital City and discover the singular joy of suplexing a friend off a skyscraper."

The game was first announced in December last year and was originally expected to be released in February. The studio later delayed the game indefinitely but eventually settled on this new August release date.

In our preview of the game, IGN said: "With a unique angle, a familiar but visually appealing cartoony art-style, and more wrasslin’ than you can shake a steel chair at, Rumbleverse seems primed to be a legitimate new contender in the competitive battle royale genre."

Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles Adds Tengen Uzui to Roster

1 year 10 months ago

Tengen Uzui is now available in Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles as the first DLC fighter in the Character Pass.

Though Uzui is also available as a standalone purchase, publisher SEGA is putting the Character Pass on sale to celebrate the launch. A free DLC stage, the Entertainment District, is also being released today to celebrate Uzui coming to the game, referencing his introduction in the Demon Slayer anime. Those who purchase Uzui will also receive a set of profile photos and quotes.

Also being released across all platforms today is the Kimetsu Academy Summer Uniforms pack, which was previously only available on Nintendo Switch. Players on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, and PC via Steam can now purchase the DLC outfits for $4.99.

As Uzui is just the first DLC character available in Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles, joined by six other characters released across five packs by the end of 2022. These include: Nezuko Kamado, (Advanced Demon Form), Tanjiro Kamado (Entertainment District), Zenitsu Agatsuma (Entertainment District), Inosuke Hashibira (Entertainment District), Daki, and Gyutaro.

The additional characters will help address a flaring issue in the game, as in our 7/10 review, IGN said: "Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles is a fighter that balances depth and accessibility well, but it’s hamstrung by an inconsistent story mode and a slim roster."
