Sega Executive Dismisses 'Play-to-Earn' Blockchain Games as 'Boring'

10 months 1 week ago

Sega isn't as all in on blockchain gaming as it was before, now withholding its biggest IP such as Sonic the Hedgehog from being used in third-party blockchain games. This move is to ensure that Sega doesn't devalue its own content.

Speaking with Bloomberg, Sega co-chief operating officer Shuji Utsumi panned blockchain games as "boring."

"The action in play-to-earn games is boring. What’s the point if games are no fun?" Utsumi said.

However, Sega will still let external partners use characters from lesser known franchises such as Three Kingdoms and Virtua Fighter as NFTs. Utsumi noted that the technology remains useful in instances where it's possible to move characters and items between different games.

Sega is also pausing its own blockchain gaming projects for now and being indecisive about implemetning Web3 technology in its upcoming suite of "super games."

The action in play-to-earn games is boring. What’s the point if games are no fun?

However, Sega is still open to using blockchain techology if it ever does become successful, as Utsumi said that the audience shouldn't doubt risk-takers.

"For the majority of people in the video game industry, what blockchain advocates say may sound a bit extreme, but that’s how the first penguin has always been," Utsumi explained. "We should never underestimate them."

Capcom Is Considering New Mega Man Games, It Just Needs Some Ideas

10 months 1 week ago

Mega Man has a long and storied video game history. Even Capcom thinks so.

In a recent shareholder's meeting, the publisher called the series "one of Capcom's historic franchises" and noted that it's "loved by fans." Since the departure of series designer Keiji Inafune, though, Mega Man's appearances have been few and far between, with the Blue Bomber last appearing in a mainline game in 2018, and Mega Man X's last major console outing being in 2005.

But take heart, Mega Man fans. Capcom says that it's still thinking about the future of the series, and that also includes older favorites like Sengoku Basara and Onimusha.

"We are considering how to approach the production of new entries in the series, which requires numerous factors, including the development of a solid concept, ideas and gameplay, etc," Capcom says.

Capcom's comments follow the release of Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, which has managed to surpass 1 million units sold since its release back in April. Capcom also showed Mega Man X Dive Offline at the recent Capcom Showcase, which is planned for release on Steam, iOS, and Android.

Mega Man's storied history stretches back to the days of the NES, where it helped to establish Capcom as a major player on the platform. In the years that followed, Capcom released many more entries in the series plus a host of spin-offs, leading some to complain that there were too many Mega Man games.

What we've been playing

10 months 1 week ago

Hello! Welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little bit about some of the games we've found ourselves playing over the last few days. This time: second impressions, profound truths, and literal-mindedness.

If you fancy catching up on some of the older editions of What We've Been Playing, here's our archive.

I reinstalled Baldur's Gate 3 at the weekend, and it made me think a bit about second impressions. Because we hear a lot about first impressions, don't we, and how you can't make those twice, but we never hear about second impressions - and I'm starting to think there's something magical in them.

Danganronpa and the surprising joys of clumsy queer representation

10 months 1 week ago

Hello! Eurogamer is once again marking Pride Month with another week of features celebrating the intersection of queer culture and gaming. Today, Eli Cugini celebrates the clumsier side of LGBTQ+ representation and the strange, raw beauty that sometimes lies within.

My favourite rhythm game, which I won't name because I pay it £10 every month and I want you to make better life decisions than I do, recently tweeted that they were featuring Muse's Plug In Baby in their Pride Month season pass. Their reasoning? "Muse has continuously made efforts in writing LGBTQIA+ positive lyrics. Their 2001 hit Plug In Baby was originally supposed to talk about transhumanism, before becoming more abstract. Play the catchy riff now via our Tour Pass: RAINBOW RHYTHMS!"

For those not versed in what 'transhumanism' means (it means technological human enhancement and does not have very much to do with transgender people), this is very stupid. Hilariously stupid. It is the funniest thing I have read all week. Come, trans humans, play my catchy riff. But there's a warmth to it: some social media rep, somewhere, is clumsily reaching for people like me. They don't really speak my language, and they don't have the most effective tools to get to me, but the result isn't harmful or flattening. It's funny. It might even be unintentionally profound.

Diablo 4 season 1 gets late July release date, brings new corrupted enemies and gear

10 months 1 week ago

Diablo 4's first season will go live on 20th July, with the promise of a new boss battle, questline and gear to get your hands on.

Known as Season of the Malignant, this season will introduce the fittingly named Malignant Monsters. These monsters are described by Blizzard as "decaying abominations" that roam through Sanctuary in a frenzy. They will not hesitate to attack anyone or anything that gets in their way.

A new questline will focus on sorting these new foes out, with Cormond, a former priest of the Cathedral of Light, helping you on your way. He will train you to "capture the Malignant hearts" that are the source of the monsters' power, and "convert them into build-altering powers".

Sonic Co-Creator Yuji Naka Given Suspended Prison Sentence for Insider Trading

10 months 1 week ago

Yuji Naka, co-creator of the Sonic the Hedgehog series and former boss of Sonic Team at Sega, was given a suspended prison sentence for insider trading following a trial in Japan.

According to IGN Japan, 57-year-old Naka was found guilty of violating Japan’s Financial Instruments and Exchange Act for insider trading in connection with the development of a game for publisher Square Enix.

Following a trial held at the Tokyo District Court on July 7, 2023, Judge Madoka Hiruta issued a two-and-a-half year prison sentence, suspended for four years, as well as two fines of ¥2 million ($14,000 approx) and ¥170 million ($1.1 million approx).

Naka was arrested in November for suspected insider trading relating to an investment made while working at Square Enix. He allegedly bought 10,000 shares in developer Aiming, at a value of around $20,000, ahead of the announcement of the Dragon Quest Tact mobile game in partnership with Square Enix.

Insider trading is the buying and selling of stocks with confidential or non-public information, usually with the intention to make money, and is illegal in Japan.

Issuing the ruling, Judge Hiruta said: "He was known as one of the world's most famous game developers, and had the authority to access joint development information. It has damaged the fairness and soundness of the stock market and the trust of investors."

Silent Hill director's next game Slitterhead debuts early look at the monster-whacking

Two years ago, a team made up of former Silent Hill developers announced a horror game of their own called Slitterhead. The debut trailer was full of creepy shape-shifting monsters and evocative cityscapes, but relatively light on concrete details. We now have a clearer picture thanks to a recent dev diary that shows a few pre-alpha clips. Slitterhead seems to have a heavier focus on combat and a cute playable dog. Genuine shocker there.

In-game footage is scattered throughout the video, but the good stuff starts to show up at the 3-minute mark. Take a quick peek:

Sonic co-creator Yuji Naka receives suspended prison sentence for insider trading

10 months 1 week ago

Yuji Naka, Sonic's co-creator and the man behind ill-fated platformer Balan Wonderworld, has been found guilty of insider trading, but will avoid prison for now.

Naka was first arrested back in November 2022 following reports of alleged insider trading at Square Enix. He pleaded guilty in March, and then, in June, the developer was sentenced to serve two and a half years in jail, with a final judgement in July.

At this time, Naka was additionally fined twice for ¥2.5m and ¥170m (just under £1m total), with his defence seeking a suspended sentence and to lower the fines. They claimed Naka "accidentally saw information that was extremely unrelated to [his] work". However, prosecutors said Naka "showed no signs of remorse" for his actions.

Yuji Naka Given 4 Year Suspended Prison Sentence

10 months 1 week ago

yuji naka prison

The Tokyo District Court served Yuji Naka (co-creator of the Sonic the Hedgehog series and former director of Balan Wonderworld) a two-and-a-half year prison sentence, as well as a four year suspended one. Basically, he is on probation and risks going to jail for two-and-a-half years if he breaks the rules that the court imposed upon him. He has also received a fine of 2.5 million JPY, with a surcharge of 170 million JPY. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

The Yuji Naka case started in November 2022 when the authorities arrested in for inside trading. He was arrested again in a second scandal involving insider trading a month later in December 2022. Insider trading is using non-public information to give yourself an edge when trading in a public company’s stock.

For reference, during his first scandal, Yuji Naka bought approximately 10,000 shares (2.8 million JPY) of Aiming stock. This is because he knew about the development of Dragon Quest Tact. His second one involved 120,000 shares of Ateam stocks (about 144.7 million JPY) prior to the release of Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier.

Gran Turismo 7’s Quirkiest Mode Continues to Be a Missed Opportunity

10 months 1 week ago

Last week’s Update 1.35 for Gran Turismo 7 came with an unexpected bonus – the first expansion to the highly eccentric Music Rally mode since the game’s launch back in March 2022. With six new Music Rally events joining the initial half-dozen, the mode has now doubled in size.

What’s unfortunate, however, is that the mode hasn’t really gotten any better.

Music Rally, for those of you who haven’t played GT7, is essentially a series of distance trials challenging drivers to travel as far as possible before the associated song ends. You start with an allocation of beats, depending on the tempo of the song, and passing through checkpoints on track will keep them topped up until the music ends. It’s ultimately very straightforward.

In the lead-up to GT7’s release, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi described Music Rally as a low-stakes mode geared towards beginners – particularly children – and designed to allow players to enjoy a relaxed drive to music. In reality, truly succeeding in Music Rally doesn’t really accommodate such a leisurely approach; meeting the gold cup distances requires aggressive and rapid driving. Or, at least, as fast as you can in the pre-selected vehicles – most of which come from the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s. One comes from the ’20s.

Not the 2020s; the 1920s.

Diablo 4’s 6 Uber Unique Items Return as Blizzard Warns It May Take Further Action to 'Maintain Fairness'

10 months 1 week ago

Diablo 4's six super rare unique items have returned via a new hotfix after Blizzard temporarily disabled them to address an issue with Helltide Chest drops. However, Blizzard is warning it may not be done.

In a note confirming that the issue had been addressed, Blizzard revealed that just 142 accounts were able to obtain Uber Unique drops between patch 1.0.4 and July 6. Still, that was enough to spur Diablo 4's developers into action and disable the drops. Blizzard also warned of further action to "maintain fairness" in its popular dungeon-crawler.

Developer Note: With the above change, we have re-enabled Uber Unique drops in Diablo IV. In total we have discovered that only 142 accounts obtained an Uber Unique between the launch of 1.0.4 and when we disabled Uber Unique items from the game on the evening of July 6th. We do not plan on removing these items from the accounts. In the future, we may need to take action to maintain fairness within the game when a bug or exploit impacts the gameplay of others.

The July 6 release of update 1.0.4 added unique items to the Helltide Chest loot pool. Helltide Mystery Chests are special chests available from taking part in Helltide events. (For a more detailed look at the Mystery Chest locations check out our Interactive Map. You can filter Mystery Chest Locations at the bottom to clear some of the clutter.)

Sonic The Hedgehog Co-Creator Yuji Naka Gets Suspended Prison Sentence For Insider Trading

Sonic co-creator Yuji Naka insider trading the hedgehog prison sentence

Sonic the Hedgehog co-creator Yuji Naka has been given a suspended prison sentence for insider trading.

News of this sentencing comes from IGN (via IGN Japan), which reports that the 57-year-old was "found guilty of violating Japan's Financial Instruments and Exchange Act" for insider trading after a July 7 court appearance at the Tokyo District Court. The judge in the case gave Naka a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence but suspended for four years, and two fines of 2 million yen and 170 million yen (approximately $14,000 and $1.1 million respectively).

This sentencing comes roughly a month after Abema Times reported in June that prosecutors on the case were asking that Naka go to prison for two years and six months and fines totaling roughly $1.2 million. However, Naka's defense asked that this fine and prison sentence be reduced. The final verdict arrived on July 7 in Japan.

I'm obsessed with Gunbrella's deadly brolly

10 months 1 week ago

Ever since played the Gunbrella demo at the Devolver Digital booth at PAX West last year, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it again. I don’t usually go for nails Metriodvanias, but there’s something about Gunbrella’s slick, parkour platforming and scrappy world that made me wanna give it a chance. Oh, and the deadly brolly, of course. I mean, it’s a gunbrella. What else is there to say?

The demo I played at PAX is now available to download and play on Steam, and I highly recommend it. Even if you’re a bit like me and Metriodvanias aren’t really your thing, the hour-long demo is entirely linear, and messing around with the gunbrella's many, many abilities is more than a good enough reason to have a play, even if you're just mucking around.

A night with Pokémon Sleep, the app that gamifies your slumber and listens to you snore

10 months 1 week ago

What's your morning phone routine? After your alarm sounds but before you get out of bed, do you scroll through your mobile? Half asleep, I clear notifications, read BBC News, do the Wordle. This week, that changed - I checked in with Snorlax first instead.

Pokémon Sleep is the franchise's big play to dominate the one part of my life previously free from Pokémon gaming - the six to eight hours a night I'm typically asleep. The app tracks sleep quality and offers rewards each morning - and yes, it also gives you another Pokémon thing to check in on during the day.

If you've tried a sleep-tracking app on your phone before, Pokémon Sleep likely works in a similar method. You lay your device next to you in bed - with the app open and the phone unlocked - and it detects your night-time noise and movement. (Pokémon Sleep asks you not to put your phone directly under your pillow in order to avoid it overheating.)

Resident Evil Biohazard: The Extreme Event Will Return to USJ

10 months 1 week ago

usj biohazard the extreme

Universal Studios Japan will bring back its Resident Evil Halloween event called the “Biohazard: The Extreme” under the new name Biohazard: The Extreme+.” It will introduce new creatures and characters. You will have to defeat enemies and protect Raccoon City for a high score.

Biohazard: The Extreme+” is a maze that will let you feel the fear of the Resident Evil series but in real life. There will be two routes that you can take, the “Leon” route and the “Claire” one. Just like in Resident Evil 2, you’ll encounter different monsters and characters depending on what room you take. There will also be Mr. Raccoon toys hidden in both the maze and around the park itself.

In 2022, USJ also introduced a lot of new limited menu items based on Resident Evil as part of its “Biohazard: The Extreme” campaign. Though there are no pictures of what the attraction is like actually inside of it, it appears to be a real maze that you walk through. Monsters and characters you see will likely be projected onto a screen rather than actors in a costume.

Preview: Fate/Samurai Remnant Is an Incredible Blend of Musou and Servants

Fate/Samurai Remnant Preview PS5

The standout game I played during my time at Anime Expo 2023 was none other than Koei Tecmo and Omega Force’s upcoming hack-and-slash crossover title, Fate/Samurai Remnant. I will admit that I have played and reviewed many Musou games in the past, despite not being a huge fan of the sub-genre. I feel the best Musou games are the ones that take the idea of massive battles and add a unique licensed wrinkle into the manner, such as Dragon Quest Heroes II and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. It’s safe to say that Fate/Samurai Remnant continues this welcome trend after my time playing a preview build on PS5.

As an already existing Fate fan, this is the way to get me to jump back into a Musou game. Taking place in a historical version of Asakusa, Japan during a previous Holy Grail War, players get to take the role of Miyamoto Iori and his servant, Saber.

The Blood Knight Is Diablo’s First New Class Since the Crusader in 2014

10 months 1 week ago

Blizzard has revealed the Blood Knight, Diablo’s first new class in nearly a decade.

But it’s not coming to the recently-released Diablo 4 - not yet anyway. Blizzard announced the Blood Knight launches in free-to-download mobile game Diablo Immortal on July 13.

The Blood Knight is described as a mid-range class with hybrid attack options that are either melee or ranged depending on your proximity to the target. It’s a “vanquisher of vampires”, feeding on the life of its enemies, entrapping them in shadows, and specializing in the polearm weapon type.

The Blood Knight is the first new Diablo class since the release of the Crusader for Diablo 3 in 2014. Of course, Diablo 4 players are already wondering which new class their game will get as DLC. Diablo 4 launched with five classes: the Barbarian, Necromancer, Druid, Rogue, and Sorcerer. Diablo 3 also launched with five classes: the Barbarian, Demon Hunter, Monk, Witch Doctor, and Wizard. It went on to get the Crusader and Necromancer classes as DLC.

Blizzard has confirmed two expansions are in the works for Diablo 4, although they are yet to be named or have release windows announced. Most expect a new class to arrive with one of these expansions. Will the Blood Knight eventually make its way to Diablo 4? Blizzard hasn't said. In the short term, Diablo 4 Season 1, dubbed Season of the Malignant, starts July 20.

My Friendly Neighborhood Is a Hilarious Horror Game with Murderous Muppets

10 months 1 week ago

Like the deranged children’s programming provided by the Five Nights at Freddy’s and Chucky series before it, My Friendly Neighborhood takes everyone’s favorite childhood memories and converts them into a gruesome scenario where you’re fighting for your life. The result, at least based on my journey so far, is a highly entertaining pseudo-horror game filled with face-slapping goofball murderers and highly disturbing musical numbers. While it certainly leans much more heavily into silliness than it does horror, I’m quite enjoying the abundantly disturbing adventure so far.

My Friendly Neighborhood answers the hilarious and completely unnecessary question: “What if Resident Evil took place on Sesame Street?”, and that Raccoon City inspiration is clear in everything from the shambling muppets to the grid-based briefcases used for inventory management. I even had a limited number of game saves and was forced to spend precious game tokens scavenged from levels to save my progress, or risk losing it all when a dopey-faced fuzz buddy hugged me to death.

Playing as a handyman named Gordon who was called to the scene of an abandoned broadcasting station that was once home to an iconic children’s show, I suddenly found myself trapped by a bunch of insane, sentient puppets that seemed very eager to murder me on sight. That extremely strong premise paved the way for plenty of cartoonish shenanigans and references to the Sesame Street-watching days of my youth, and that made for an immensely entertaining handful of hours.

Street Fighter 6 Sales Hit 2 Million, Rashid Gameplay Revealed

10 months 1 week ago

Street Fighter 6 sales have increased to two million units in just over a month, Capcom has announced.

Street Fighter 6 got off to a strong start with one million sold over launch weekend. Total sales for the Street Fighter franchise now top 50 million.

Capcom said single-player features such as the World Tour story mode and the new Modern Control type were designed to appeal to a broad range of players, and have contributed to Street Fighter 6’s sales success.

IGN’s Street Fighter 6 review returned a 9/10. We said: “Street Fighter 6 is the most feature-rich a Street Fighter has ever been at launch, but even beyond that, its roster of 18 characters is excellent, the new mechanics revitalize the one-on-one fighting formula, and it absolutely nails all of the little things that make for a stellar fighting game.”

Street Fighter 6 still has a long way to go before it tops the sales of Street Fighter 5. That game has shifted over seven million copies in the seven years since its February 2016 release. In May, Capcom COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto said the company was aiming for 10 million sales for Street Fighter 6.

Capcom said it aims to drive further sales growth by pushing Street Fighter 6 esports. Street Fighter 6 is set to star at the upcoming Evo tournament, and is the focus of a record $1 million first place prize for the Capcom Pro Tour 2023.

Street Fighter 6 Sales Surpass 2 Million Units Worldwide

10 months 1 week ago

street fighter 6 salesq

Sales for Street Fighter 6 surpassed 2 million units worldwide. This number takes into account all platforms, as well as both physical and digital copies. Capcom uploaded a stylized picture of Juri next to a “Thank you” message onto its Twitter account for the series. To commemorate this milestone, Capcom will send all players a “token of its appreciation,” though it did not specify what it is in the tweet.

For reference, Street Fighter 6 came out on June 2, 2023. So that means it became a platinum title in a little over a month. A platinum title under Capcom’s standards is a game that has sold over a million units. Time will tell how many copies it will sell and if it will outperform its prequel, Street Fighter 5. Street Fighter 5 has, as of January 2023, sold over 7 million copies in under 7 years.

Ever since its launch, Street Fighter 6 has been a popular game for fighting game fans. At launch, over 64,000 players were online concurrently on Steam. This likely lead to issues regarding custom rooms back then, since the sheer amount of players caused server load.

game re:set pc version

Sega opened up pre-registrations for the PC version of 404 Game Re:Set. You’ll be able to pre-register from DMM Games and you’ll be able to link your mobile account as well. So if you’ve already started to play the game on mobile and want to move to PC in the future, you won’t lose any of the progress you’ve made or characters you’ve collected. [Thanks, Gamer!]

Another benefit to playing on the DMM Games server is that Sega will hand out 20 pulls’ of gems to PC players. So there are benefits for mobile players who did not plan to move to the PC version. In order to pre-register, you will need to have a DMM account. There is no release window as of yet for the PC version.

404 Game Re:Set has Yoko Taro (Drakengard, NieR) at the helm as the writer. The story of the game centers around purifying corrupted retro Sega games, who all appear as anime girls. Games that you can get in the gacha include Crazy  Taxi, The House of the Dead, and Virtua Racing. It is quite popular in Japan, reaching a million downloads about a week after it came out. However, there is still no news as of yet in regards to an international or localized release.

I was gone but now am here again to join my co-hosts on this week's Electronic Wireless Show podcast, much like the hundreds and hundreds of of hours of interviews, press briefings and old presentations salvaged by Noclip and heaved onto YouTube. We were going to talk about children's games this week, but given the game for children I was going to talk about was once Stadia exclusive Gylt it seemed a time to talk about the precariousness of digital media a bit (and also make James explain Stadia).

We've all been playing a few games here and there, and most of them are current, with Nate still very enthusiastic about being a dinosaur. James comes with more beans to the hardware altar, and we all have some slightly weird suggestions for your recommendations. Plus, because Liam is actually away this week, I made a special effort to pay attention to audio levels and reduce background noise because I've seen ye all complaining about when I have to edit the podcast and I'm sick of it.
